Bush Ducks Question On Whether ‘Appeasement’ Speech Was Aimed At Obama

Last week, during a speech to the Israeli parliament, President Bush said, “As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Yesterday on NBC, Middle East correspondent Richard Engel asked Bush if his remarks were directed at Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Bush, however, ducked the question and refused to give a direct answer:

ENGEL: You said that negotiating with Iran is pointless, and then you went further. You said that it was appeasement. Were you referring to Senator Barack Obama?

BUSH: You know, my policies haven’t changed, but evidently the political calendar has. And when, you know, a leader of Iran says that they want to destroy Israel, you got to take those words seriously.

Watch it:

In fact, CNN reported last week that White House aides were “acknowledging that this was a reference to the fact that Sen. Obama and other Democrats have publicly said that it would be ok for the U.S. President to meet with leaders like the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.” Moreover, Bush’s press secretary Dana Perino wouldn’t deny his comments “include” Obama.

While some observers have noted the flaw in Bush’s argument — that merely talking to one’s adversaries does not necessarily constitute “appeasement” — others have praised Bush. For example, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called Bush’s “appeasement” reference “exactly right,” while Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) added that it was “moving.”

Given that Bush avoided Engel’s question, it seems he can only act as “opiner-in-chief” on the 2008 presidential election when he’s talking to foreigners.

Digg It!

Do you mean instead of saying, “I can handle his (Hitler’s) banking and make a fortune even thought it means aiding and abetting one of the worst tyrants the world has ever known.” like your grandfather, Prescott, said?

This is the same scenario we now have with Iran.

‘Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.’ – JFK

Bush is too chickenshit to even admit he had Obama in mind when talking about appeasement. He forgot, of course, that the appeaser he was referring to was an Idaho Republican.

Word is Bush will be fundraising for McCan’t these coming weeks. Separating these two will become increasingly difficult for the McCan’t camp.

“…you know, a leader of Iran says that they want to destroy Israel, you got to take those words seriously.”

First, this is exactly wrong because President Ahmedinejad never said he wanted to “destroy Israel.” This interpretation of what he said is intentionally wrong and misleading.

Second, why is it that President Ahmedinejad’s words concerning Israel have to be taken seriously, but his claims that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons are not?

This double standard is due to the fact that Dinkledork wants to bomb Iran for its oil and to protect Israel, though clearly Iran presents no threat to Israel. Boggles the mind.

While I’m at it, exactly what does it mean for Iran to have influence in that part of the world? How is Iranian influence harmful to anyone? What difference does it make if Iran has influence?

My gawd! Would the media ever ask the pertinent, important questions?
Like Prescott’s role in financial “appeasement”?
Like debunking the myth of Israel’s total destruction per Iran?
Like indicating that said appeaser was Republican?
Like confronting the disillusion that talking with other countries is considered appeasement?
Let’s face it, had we “appeased” Sadaam Hussein with continued sanctions and inspections, maybe, just maybe, hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis would be alive today. 4000 families of our brave men and women would be intact. Thousands upon thousands more brave men and women would not have life altering injuries. And maybe, with the above “appeasement”, we would have utilized our resources and man power to capture those that struck us on that dark, fateful day in September.
Mr. Bush! You, sir, are an idiot! And your constant scare tactics are just about over.
    Worst.
    President.
    EVER!

  13. lokidog says:

Guess it was simply too difficult to say “no”.

Proving beyond any doubt he was referring to Obama when once again embarrassing the US on the world stage.

After all, the gutless SOB said “no” – like Cheney – when it was his chance to go to Vietnam. Not like it’s hard for him to say “no” – he does it all the time when it comes to following the rule of law, doing the right thing in foreign policy, when he’s asked if he’s given up booze, etc.

  16. Freedom Rebel says:

Do IQ’s just drop sharply once you are an elected official? Or is that you have to kiss so much asss just to get things done?

Bush has never and will never make a strong speech, that requires too much intellect. Bush is a complete uncouth disgrace. Why Lieberman keeps sucking up to him and what he hopes to gain from it, I just can’t figure that part out? I truly hope that his constituents have seen the light and he doesn’t get re-elected. Man, what a waste of a seat in Congress…

  17. JMOHR says:

Bush once again shows the personal cowardice for which the Republicans are so famous. Bush should have the fortitude to just call it appeasement and accuse Obama flat out as being an appeaser. However, that would take guts. It also would expose Bush to out right ridicule for deceitfully portraying discussions as appeasement. Republicans lie, they distort, they do what ever they can to make the most emotionally vile and explosive charges against Democrats. But they do it in manner in which they can later deny. Bush never said that Iraq was involved in 9/11 – it was done by innuendo. These are the tactics of cowards. These cowards are the ones that we want to protect our national defense?

It annoys me that not one of the candidates has addressed this. They’re all perpetuating the “wipe Israel off the map” myth, even though the phrase was never said, and by a guy who doesn’t have the authority to command Iran’s military even if he had made the threat.

The thing the media also conveniently glosses over is the fact that Ahmedinejad (Iran’s Dubya) will likely be out of power very soon after the next president is inaugurated.

And also that he doesn’t speak for millions of other Muslims, just as Bush speaks for millions of Americans but also doesn’t speak for millions of other Americans.
And of course one doesn’t have to be Muslim object to Israel’s policies–I can’t think of a reason why any Lebanese Christians for instance, would approve of Israeli policies.

    I’m just saying…

Besides Ahmedinijad can “talk the talk” all he wants, but can’t “walk the walk”. The Republicans speak of him as though he had the same executive power as Bush, when in fact he doesn’t.

And then there’s the fact that Iran can’t even attack the Israeli nation directly, let alone “destroy” it. Hezbollah and Hamas are surely not under the direct control of Iran
(as the Republicans constantly imply), they are local players for whom some elements in the Iranian political system have sympathy or in which they have expedient interests–SOP for any nation, anywhere.

“So here we are. Having another hypothetical discussion about a hypothetical war with Iran.”–GTLOBGYN

I understand what you mean, but it’s really more like BushCo not discussing but simply insisting on a real war with a hypothetically ultra-aggressive Iran.

“A country that by all accounts is not very happy with it’s own leadership. And this is absolutely nothing like the situation Hitler was in.”

    Quite so,Loving OBGYN.

The Iranian leadership may be Islamic fundamentalists but they are not stupid. Nor are they these crazy evil Bond villains which the Bush-administration are so determined to portray them as. Of course Ahmadinejad does play the part of villain well but hes not the leader of Iran

The big problem is not Iran attacking Israel with the first bomb they manage to piece together, nor is it Iran giving a way their precious nuclear weapons to unreliable foreign terrorists like Hezbollah or Hamas

The big problem is nuclear proliferation which involves everyone in the region not just Iran. US threats and attacks will just make Iran more determined to get the bomb to use as a deterrent to future aggression

    JMOHR,

OKAY. That’s not enough. Ahmadinejad repeatedly talks about destroying and American ally. How else is Bush supposed to talk? This needs to be worked out because Obama is going to have to answer for it.

The point is not whether Bush should talk tough on Ahmadinejad. Obama should also take a tough stance as to the potential consequences of aggressive actions by Iran against Israel. But that was not the issue under discussion. We can honestly debate whether there should be discussions between Iran and the United States. They are already taking place.

The real question is at what level such discussions should take place and what topics and goals should be included in such discussions. Bush shuts down any discussion whatsoever with his disingenuous equation of talking and appeasement. We all know that such a comparison is false and the comparison hypocritical since the administration has held lower level talks with Iran, N. Korea and other rogue nations.

But Bush and his ilk are cowards since they refuse to even own up to their attacks on Obama. Bush can say that his policy has not changed on Iran BUT HE CAN ALSO SAY THAT HE BELIEVES OBAMA’S POLICY IS ONE OF APPEASEMENT. Bush chooses to ignore the question to avoid serious debate. Obama will only be prepared to meet this issue if the actual disputes are framed. Something that Bush and McCain want to avoid.

BUSH: You know, my policies haven’t changed, but evidently the political calendar has.

I believe this translates to “Don’t blame me – blame the victim. He’s the democrat nominee and he’s a SCARY BLACK MAN.”
“Clinton did it, too” didn’t fit.

Keltoi, perhaps if we didn’t have to spend so much time translating Bush, we could have some time for translating Ahmedinejad.

I can’t stop laughing, Thank you…. That made my day…

  67. Shayne says:

Perhaps Keltoi it’s because GW Bush has done more to destroy THIS country than Ahmedinejad would ever think of doing. But you probably don’t understand since all the blood runs to your head from the constant bootlicking.

  68. Jackie says:

This topic only brings up the fact that Prescott Bush worked with Hitler got gain his wealth. Richard Engel is the only reporter who lived in Iraq for 4 years while reporting the truth and not like others who got their reports from the Pentagon Propaganda Department. Iran knows the position Bush has put the US in and will use it. I often wondered why history showed that the Masters didn’t want the slaves to read or become educated, I understand it now. As Americans are fed lies and put in fear no one really knows the truth because they don’t bother to look for it. Even when the truth smacks them in the face, they still believe the lie.
As the Bush Crime Team was busy committing crimes in the US and overseas. Other World Leaders were making deals with each other for the benefit of their citizens. Some Bush/Cheney supporters blame the current recession and weak Military on Bill Clinton. That shows just how stupid people are when Bill Clinton left office economy was strong and we had a surplus with a strong Military and of course we had friendships around the world. But like most liars just say someone else did it people will believe what their told. Even the Media got busted by the famous Pentagon memo. Even the once honest Charlie Gibson caved in to the Evil controlled Administration. Look the Middle East won and that’s it like it or not. Bush/Cheney and their GOP support group were out played and made to look like the fools they are by all of the Middle East Countries. Just check how well the Middle East Economy is doing even China is laughing as with the famous US Flag pin everyone talking about is made in China.

Bush: And when, you know, a leader of Iran says that they want to destroy Israel, you got to take those words seriously.

But when an American leader says they want to obliterate Iran, you don’t take thse words seriously…?

    .

Bush is a blustering, strutting, posturing BULLY, and like most bullies, he’s also a sniveling coward. I’m sick of him, his lies and his sycophants.

    I WANT THEM GONE.

  71. Salmon Dave says:

Has anyone asked Mr. Bush who the senator that
supposedly made the comment concerning talking
to Hitler….was….I never heard of that comment before
    Who said that….???

  72. john saarikko says:

    Comparison:

Hitler staged a phony attack on a German radio station near the border with Poland. He used Germans dressed in Polish uniforms and told the world that Poland instigated the affair and was a threat to Germany. Then rolled into Poland. Then some senator said he wished he had had a chance to talk with Hitler. Would it have done any good?

Bush staged a presentation at the UN showing Iraq with weapons of mass destruction. Claimed Iraq was an imminent threat to US. Then rolled into Iraq. All kinds of senators had a chance and some did talk to him. Did that do any good? Of course not. Can”t talk to anyone hell bent on attack.

The jerk should have kept his stupid mouth shut in Israel.

Who is calling the kettle black?

O’Rly Jackie? As a retired veteran I can say without a doubt, you don’t know what the hell your talking about!
During the Clinton Administration the Department of Defense was conducting what they call Base Realignment and Closures and have been doing so for the last 20 years! When Clinton took office, he was responsible for approving or disapproving of all remaining BRAC recommendations from the previous administration in 1991. At that time Clinton approved a swooping 20% in all DoDs capacity that existed in 1988, through 2001. This didn’t even include the overseas force structure changes and deletions to hundreds of US military installations across the globe! So please, be more informed of the facts before you shoot off at the mouth!

I served under Bill Clinton and during those 8 years the entire military was reduced to a former shell of itself. Was that the reason for 9/11 happening? Of course not, but Mr. Clinton knows full well what other cuts to the defense department, intelligence agencies and just about everything else, which helped bolster the economy due to reduced spending! Only he can truly say and live with the fact that maybe all those cuts to the Nations Security apparatus did in fact help produce the tragedy of 9/11!

At least have the common sense to accept those issues as part of the equation and quit hating on GWB! He didn’t start this mess no matter how bad you want to blame him for all your miserable little problems!

GROW A SET, OR BORROW SOMEONES!

  75. Kahoneez says:

Gessuz bush the next time your sitting in front of a reporter , can you PLEASE not spread your legs so WIDE , you gave the Kahoneez a hernia , just by watching your painful interview . I don’t know if this was a residual effect from a Skull & Bones initiation or what , but it was real creepy . CLOSE’M Up fella.
As far as Engel’s question , he needed to loosen up a little bit and ask a FOLLOW UP question , WHERE you referring to OBAMA ? or WHo where you referring to and Ahmadinejad doesn’t hate Israel and never said he wanted to wipe them off the map, because if you google Prof. JUAN COLE , he has the correct and truth translation , (speaks Farsi). He never said the words “WIPE” or “Map” , he said the ” regime must be removed from the pages of time ” and it he was quoting the Iman . He also followed by Palestinians should be included in voting in Israel , for a true democracy .
The U.S. media have been repeating the lies and translation over and over again and unfortunately , this is going to lead us into another war .
