Chafee: ‘It’s a different John McCain’ running for president than the one I served with in the Senate.»

In an interview with Fox News’s Neil Cavuto today, former Rhode Island senator Lincoln Chafee, who recently left the Republican Party to become an Independent and is supporter of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), said “there are two John McCains”:

There’s one that was my colleague in the Senate that was good on the environment, that voted with me, the only other Republican to vote against the tax cuts, and had the Gang of 14. And now there’s the senator McCain that’s running for the Republican nomination. It’s almost like two people, kow-towing to the Republican base. And being a different candidate, and talking as he is now about how we need to not engage anybody on the world. … It’s a different John McCain, hearing the rhetoric I hear now. Make the tax cuts permanent and distancing himself from his environmental record.

Even McCain’s friends know he is a loser. Look for Romney to be the Repub candidate. VP will be Huckabee. McCain will either disappear, or be promised a cabinet position with the repub administration. Either way, his political career will be over. Good riddance.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees that McCain has sold his soul to the worst portion of the GOP.

Does anybody here remember a song by Tom Lehrer in 1965 called “Whatever Happened to Hubert?” It was a lament of how Hubert Humphrey — once a “fiery liberal spirit” — had become a rather pale puppet as veep. Fortunately, Humphrey bounced back once he got back in the Senate. Maybe McCain will, too.

    @MissHusseinMolly-
I still have that song on a tape that I made years ago from all my Grandparent’s old Tom Lehrer albums- great stuff.
“whatever became of hubert?” on this is the year that was…

I think it’s shameful the way you guys keeping picking on this angry, senile, lonely old man when all he wants to do is be your friend!

    (snark)

I can understand why Chafee threw his support to Obama. McCain would probably try to get Roe v Wade overturned, with all of his talk about very conservative Supreme Court Justices. Chafee had the support of Naral Pro-Choice America. McCain also is not going to support the environmental issues that we are facing, and Chafee was a strong supporter of Environmental Protection.

They are polar opposites on almost every important issue to Chafee. Plus I’m sure this made Chafee very unpopular with the Republican party: On November 17, 2005 he was the only Republican to vote in favor of reinstating the top federal income tax rate of 39.6% on upper-income payers.

One of the main reasons he support Obama is because he was against the war in Iraq. Chafee was the only Republican in the Senate to have voted against authorization of the use of force in Iraq.

  8. lokidog Says:

Obama needs to get Chafee some more press and face time on TV. He’ll be the dems answer to McCain and Lieberman, with the difference being of course Obama and Chafee are sane, reasonable people.

Now Hagel (Obama should dangle a possible Sec of Def?) needs to start hammering McCain and the GOP on Iraq - he’s leaving the Senate, screw the GOP - time to stand up and be counted Chuck. Legacy time - (do it for your Nam brothers who see this fiasco for what it is). Thanks for what you’ve said so far, let’s take it up a notch or two!.

Hagel probably has some good McInsane stories to peddle, too.

Ah yes — it was “Whatever Became of Hubert?” And it was on the “That Was the Year That Was” album.

    I also found the lyrics:

    *************************************
    Whatever became of hubert?
    Has anyone heard a thing?
Once he shone on his own,
    Now he sits home alone,
And waits for the phone to ring.

    Once a fiery liberal spirit,
Ah, but now when he speaks he must clear it.
Second fiddles a hard part, I know,
When they dont even give you a bow.

We must protest his treatment, hubert,
    Says each newspaper reader.
    As someone remarked to schubert,
    Take us to your lieder.

    (sorry about that)

    Whatever became of hubert?
We miss you, so tell us please.
Are you sad? are you cross? are you gathering moss
While you wait for the boss to sneeze?

Does lyndon, recalling when he was vp,
Say, Ill do unto you like they did unto me?
Do you dream about staging a coup?
    Hubert, what happened to you?

    *************************************

What’s sad is that Hubert fell into the mold that so many vice presidents do (until Dick Cheney came along, that is). Remember that McCain is running for PRESIDENT and has lost his personal principles.

More proof. Repubs = bow down & suck up to anyone who may give you a vote. Honesty & ethics– who cares!! Just get those votes! Surely Americans have moved beyond this hate/fear filled crap from Repubs & McCain.

  12. Keith Says:

I heard McCain talking on tv today, fearmongering about Obama talking with Cuba if he becomes president. Must have said “dangerous” six times! What’s so dangerous? Now we’re supposed to be afraid of Cuba, too? They ain’t hurt us the past 49 years.

  13. dbadass Says:

    Keith,
When will enough of the folks who use words like “pinko” and “commie” and such be dead so that we can move on with this Cuba thing. Our Cuba policy is just plan moronic and serves no purpose but to appease the FL exiles and pander for their votes

  14. Leporello Says:

McInsane’s Republican handlers finally found out the code words to activate his latent programming. This is the Manchurian Candidate, for real. Either that or he’s gone completely over to the Dark Side. Either way watching the ongoing train wreck that once was the Republican Party self-destruct will be vastly amusing come November.
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
