GOP longs for Tom DeLay.

By Amanda Terkel on May 20th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

GOP longs for Tom DeLay.

Today, the Politico reports that House Republicans are frustrated with Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and questioning his leadership abilities:

This source also said Boehner “lacks some of the killer instinct” of former Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas). “DeLay had a lot of problems, but he got the job done. Boehner needs a little more DeLay in him. He’s got to knock some heads,” said this source.

Boehner has taken a decidedly anti-DeLay approach since taking over the party in early 2006, preferring consensus over conflict. But the GOP’s recent slump had some members and aides reminiscing fondly about the days when “The Hammer” ruled the Republicans.

AMERICAblog’s Joe Sudbay writes, “Ah, the good old days. I suppose they miss Jack Abramoff, too.”

    Got what “job” done ?

Partisan divide and irreparable damage and scandals ?

Quite a resounding success story the Bug Man is , isn’t he ?

Oh, now that’s just too funny!!

I expect we’ll hear a whole lot more of this kind of whining in the near future.

I also expect that I’m going to enjoy it. ;o)

  3. Frosty Cupcake says:

    Republicans just don’t get it.

Tom DeLay is one of the reasons they are in this malaise.

DeLay was fuking joined at the hip to Bush, but they miss the old crook?

    Unbelievable.

“DeLay had a lot of problems.”

Candidate for understatement of the century.

  5. gummitch says:

“He got the job done” sounds a lot like “He made the trains run on time.”

  6. Xisithrus says:

They should put Boehner up in a hotel, passed out, and then send in Delay to put some hammer in him.

  7. dbadass says:

This is apt to make him cry.

  8. Uncle Ho says:

LOL! Especially since the Hammer was himself nailed. Hoisted by his own petard in ethics troubles of his own making.

  9. ralph the wonder llama says:

Yeah, it’s a lot tougher to marginalize the other party when they have thirty-five more representatives than you do, huh?

  10. RUCerious says:

Instead of tanning, Boner needs to juice up on bug spray.

  11. Leftside Annie says:

Ahhhhh…all those right-wing authoritarians longing for their authority figure…

    I’m touched.

    NOT.

  12. buzzbomb says:

Boner is too busy crying at the drop of hat and defending his child molester collegues to commit the crimes Delay executed.

  13. LibertyLover says:

No, what they miss is the Republican Majority.

Well, maybe they miss the blackmail. Delay could keep them in line (Craig, Foley, Hastert, Vitter, etc… ) but threatening to release their “evil” ways…

Or maybe they missed being told how to vote instead of having to think about it on their own?

Or maybe they just miss bending the rules to get their way.

Yeah , and so do button men in the Mafia ………….

  15. backup says:

Republicans don’t need another Tom Delay.

But, encouraging for the GOP is a growing recognition they have abandoned core conservative principles and it is costing them elections.

Instead of Tom Delay, how about a GOP that earnestly stands for:

Fiscal responsibility, strong defense, low taxes, less government intrusion, liberty, free markets and balanced budgets.

How about a GOP that becomes more culturally tolerant and less bigoted; and extends the idea to not only include defending the liberties of Christians, but the liberty of all Americans.

The good news for the GOP, is that they know they need to change if they want to be relevant in the future. But, will they?

    Really? Could have fooled me.

I see the same “leadership” – i.e., blowhard rhetoric, f***ing America and the working man, “support the troops” by sending them into a clusterf*** with no plan and under equipped…generally, just the same ol’ same ol’ major league *sshole approach.

Oh, wait. Maybe they mean Hot Tub Tommy didn’t cry when pretending to be pro military?

Nahhhhhhh…….Boner’s still a jagoff. Just a teary eyed one.

  17. nofltwlt says:

The GOP will never get it!

Tom Delay and Karl Rove are the reasons why the GOP is dead. Americans have jettisoned their nutty behavior. We are better than them and we are driving them from office. If the GOP doesn’t understand this, they will not only die, they will be buried in an unmarked grave – never to be found again.

I say, this is a good thing.

  18. Roket says:

All Boehner needs is a rawhide whip. That will keep those rascally Republicans in line. I hear some of them even like the whip. Kinky!?!

And they could call themselves Democrats.

  20. kassandrasduplex says:

Typical of a party run by the politics of fear and greed. When your rose-colored lenses are tinted by hypocrisy you are able to look at someone like DeLay and think warm good thoughts. There are Hitler admirers yet in Germany of course, and in Tokyo they have a shrine to the 14 or so war criminals convicted and executed after WW2 for the Rape of Nanking. Some of the Japs regard those creatures yet as heroes! Far Right folks are capable of that kind of duplicitous emotional behavior. It’s borderline psychopathic, isn’t it?

  21. specialist f says:

What is it with all of the GOP’s closeted gay references…
“bohner needs a little delay in him” ?
    “THE HAMMER”
    “knock some head”

I mean it’ll be OK if they just go ahead and come out of the closet already, sheeesh!

  22. SP Biloxi says:

Looks the GOP is looking for a new model to drop kick crocodile teary eyed Boner Boy. Since they can’t find a new model, the GOP long for the Bugman. Replace a crook with an indicted crook. Priceless.

  23. pete says:

    Criminals=Good
    Cry-babies=Bad

Also, “conservative” no longer applies to the GOP. They are dangerous, reckless, radicals. Anyone who thinks they stand for accountability, responsibility, or even “smaller government”, is an utter fool.

  24. drago says:

It just shows how unqualified GOP’ers are for public service. THEY JUST DON”T GET IT.

They need to just shut the heck up and go play some more golf.

  25. greggp says:

I wonder if they’re also nostalgic for Christopher Hays, the guy that DeLay hired to manage their money (since he stole so much of it).

  26. Cal Malenky says:

Well, by all means, brig him back! Maybe he can hurt the “brand” even more.

  27. williamjacobs says:

    Poor Boehner.
DeLay picks all the low hanging fruit, redistricting Texas with a scalpel and microscope and shoehorning every two bit swindler he can into every office so every one of them can be easily controlled.

DeLay brought the GOP to it’s high water mark, but I picture this as his having pushed against a spring loaded ceiling. He’s given it everything he’s got and compressed that spring as much as he can so the GOP can be as tall as he can make it. Then he hands it to Boehner who has been blissfully unaware of the effort required to force the ceiling to unreasonable heights.

The force needed to keep that spring compressed is going to crush that ceiling onto the heads of several heads this November. There’s only so much corruption the citizens will take if your efforts to rig the voting machines don’t hand you victories without public will.
