I hope Ted’s state of mind is conducive to beating this cancer, whether that be atheist or ecstatic, doesn’t much matter to me. And hope his family finds strength in whatever place they search.

If it helps Kennedy to know that people are pulling for him to beat this cancer, know it man because we are.

I understand where LividLib is coming from, even though I’m not an atheist. I don’t object to the “praying” bit, but I never like reading or hearing someone say “we’re all rooting for you . . .” when I didn’t get a vote. I think it’s important to be accountable for your own thoughts and beliefs, without attaching them to other people. I’ll speak for myself and I don’t need anyone doing it for me, thanks.

But, I try not to be too cranky about it. Most of the time.

I’m with liberal traitor, not selfish at all. Recall the Bush cabal running to the side of an ill colleague in order to advance their agenda? Being sad at the potential of loosing a vote for a better reality is just normal.

Damn. I hope the scientists looking after Sen. Ted Kennedy can provide him with some comfort and hopefully a full recovery.

Ted, as I like to call him, has been a politician that I have always looked at with admiration. Can’t say why as I don’t really know a bunch about him. I guess perhaps that there is some leadership quality that comes out when he speaks. Damn, there is a word for what I’m thinking but it escapes me!

As for the “praying” dust up, I can empathize with LividLib being an atheist myself. There will be other subjects where this may be more fully broached. Sadly, religion is so prevalent that not one day goes by without some reference to it.

There can never be a good time for someone like Teddy Kennedy to have a brain tumor, but this is particularly bad timing because his vote is so damn critical in the Senate. I know that’s selfish, but he really is essential to maintaining some sanity in our federal government.

Another atheist here weighing in:
For the same reason that I don’t give a crap about the religious aspect of someone saying “God Bless You” when I sneeze or the few times that some of my religious friends have said “I’m praying for you” when I’m going through tough times, LividLib, you need to just let it go. This is not the time or place to have this discussion. I understand and identify with your point, but really, is it that much of a big deal? People always speak from their experience, they speak from what they know. In the case of my religious friends, their statement of “I’m praying for you” is not meant to be some denigration of my atheism, or a thinly veiled attempt at conversion when I’m vulnerable, just as Ralph or Dr. Hussein are not trying to convert you or speak for you as though you believe in god. They are speaking from what they know. When religious people find themselves in these situations, where someone they know is in trouble or what have you, what do they do (hopefully in addition to actually trying to fix the problem etc., unlike some religious nutjobs who won’t accept surgery or blood transfusions to the detriment of others)? They PRAY. You and I do not, we deal with grief and such in our own way. Both are acceptable. I accept others praying for me during times of strife because that is their way of showing solidarity. The Christians or other religious people who say they pray for you BECAUSE you are an atheist and they PRAY you see the light are the problem, not our friends here. So basically I’m saying just lighten up a bit, this thread is not about you, me, atheism, or religion. It is about Senator Ted Kennedy, my Senator, my great Senator, and this unfortunate news, and the wishes of all his admirers and constituents, religious and non-religious alike, that he make a full recovery.

Phew, that was long. Anyway, Peace to you LividLib, to you Dr. Hussein, to Ralph, to Senator Kennedy and his family most certainly, and to you Al Da God aka Trajan75, I applaud your kind words for the Kennedy’s and for now, will leave it at that.
