McCain adviser: Sometimes it’s ‘accurate’ to describe a woman as a ‘bitch.’»

During yesterday’s Democratic primary coverage, CNN senior analyst Jeff Toobin criticized a New York Times column that published a joke about Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) being a “white bitch.” “I think it’s appalling, but I think she’s absolutely right that there has been a level of sexism,” said Toobin. But CNN contributor Alex Castellanos, who is also an adviser to Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign, disagreed, saying that some women deserve to be called a “bitch”:

If I can disagree, I think you’re dead wrong. She’s dead wrong. And I think she thinks her problem is she’s a woman. Her problem is she’s Hillary Clinton. And some women, by the way, are named that and it’s accurate.

Watch it:

TPM Election Central’s Greg Sargent writes, “What’s amusing about this is that Castellanos actually argued that it’s sometimes accurate to call a woman a “bitch” as a way of making the claim that Hillary was wrong to argue that there’s sexism in our political coverage. Pretty twisted stuff.”

Yup, her biggest problem ain’t the ‘B’ word, it’s the ‘C’ word, as in CLINTON.

Repukes still get a boner whenever that name comes up.

  2. raynman Says:

Wow, even McCain’s advisors have ’senior moments’, it appears…

  3. Leporello Says:

Absolutely off the scale of wackiness! Of all the words in all thi world Not to call a woman, they pick that one. Every time I think they’ve hit bottom, they grab a shovel.

Remind me again, why is it ok to call a man a “prick”, but calling a woman anything but a lady is a slur?

    Uncle Ho,

I’ve been fond of this pic for years now.

    Because you’re a misogynist idiot?

  9. Marie Says:

This is what passes for punditry and politics today - thanks to the Bush family, Lee Atwater’s legacy, Karl Rove, et al. They believe they can say whatever they want - and so they do.

Repugs are drooling for a chance to run against Clinton in the fall; they so despise the Clintons. They have so little against Obama, they have resorted to attacking his wife as well. Yet, no one is even questioning Cindy McCain, much less attacking her. IOKIYAR
Misogynistic, bigoted racists = the republican party.

Why? You will just forget again, next time you beat your wife.

  11. Freedom Rebel Says:

First, the New York Times should have more decorum than to allow that to be said about any Presidential Candidate. Secondly, Jeff Toobin was right to be appalled, it gives journalist that lower their standards to gutter language zero credibility. And lastly, Alex Castellanos obviously has no respect for women. His support of such appalling language aimed at denigrating women shows he lacks the refinement viewers should expect from contributors of mainstream media.

McBush’s adviser never said if was ok to call a man a “prick”. In fact, this has NEVER been part of the discussion. Why are you even bringing up this miserable and failed attempt to change the subject?

some 2-faced reactions going on here…

    so hit me…

  22. Jackie Says:

Wow so this is the way Christian Religious Republican Party speaks of woman. Didn’t we just celebrate Mother’s Day, by honoring our Mothers and woman. Do Fathers raise their daughters to be called this name. I wrote before that the Media and Public had no problem calling Hillary these names and even calling her daughter a pimp. Soon and very soon Mrs. Obama will be called the same names. I have noticed that Senator Obama say nothing about the sexist names Hillary is being called yet says don’t say that about his wife. Mrs. Obama is from the South Side of Chicago and American will see what happens when you call a Black woman that name. Don’t like for the lady like response. Michelle will break out like the ladies of the movie Waiting to Exhale and it wont be pretty. While Michelle spoke on NBC interview she almost came out as her neck started to move. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go the Harlem, South Side Chicago or any inter city area and call a black woman the b word, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Don’t look for Michelle to be a Jackie Kennedy or Nancey Reagen, she is a stone Sister at heart she just has degree’s. Even Senator Obama told the GOP Lay of His Wife why, because he knows she will go off on somebody as he already knows what she can do. But the good Senator sees no problem with calling other woman the b word.

  23. DRxJ Says:

When you hate women, you call them b*tches, and then think it’s an accurate description.

What’s next? Claiming that c*nt is a term of endearment? (whoops, some wacko president from the University of Colorado already used that to defend the male football players harassing a female place kicker)

Seriously, when one expects wives to be barefoot, pregnant, and voice no opinion, how else does one react to successful women who eclipse their “manhood”? Why, derogatory remarks, of course.

  24. backup Says:

I’ve seen Castellanos before and he’s seemed reasonable, but this comment was ignorant.

If you want decribe a woman as strong or difficult or uncompromising; use those words.

But, let’s throw the b*tch characterization in the trash along side the ‘N’ word.

It’s a double standard, without a significant male equivalent, that we should not tolerate.

  25. FRANKCORNBREAD Says:

Well, some males are rightfully called a ‘bastard” but only by the elementary school aged demographic. Grow up and leave the name calling on the playground.

  26. stewarjt Says:

So anyway, I’d like to see some woman beat that guy’s ass and make him her b*tch.

  27. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Just imagine the fake outrage from the reich-wing if someone called Condi a “B****”. Faux would spend 24 hrs/day for 3 weeks detailing how the “left hates women”.

  36. katy Says:

well, i’ve got to agree with modo on this one:

    […]
As a possible first Madame President, Hillary is a flawed science experiment because you can’t take Bill out of the equation. Her story is wrapped up in her marriage, and her marriage is wrapped up in a series of unappetizing compromises, arrangements and dependencies.

Instead of carving out a separate identity for herself, she has become more entwined with Bill. She is running bolstered by his record and his muscle. She touts her experience as first lady, even though her judgment during those years on issue after issue was poor. She says she’s learned from her mistakes, but that’s not a compelling pitch.

As a senator, she was not a leading voice on important issues, and her Iraq vote was about her political viability.

She told New York magazine’s John Heilemann that before Iowa taught her that she had to show her soft side, “I really believed I had to prove in this race from the very beginning that a woman could be president and a woman could be commander in chief. I thought that was my primary mission.”

If Hillary fails, it will be her failure, not ours.

i recommend you all click on that “white b!tch” link and read her opinion piece that contains the joke, and so much more - and that joke? lowbrow, maybe, but it IS kinda funny…

There are apparently certain trigger words that TP has in their moderating software. I know d-o-u-c-h-e-b-a-g is one that will get your post hung up (I’ve used that a couple of times referring to right-wing idiocy.)

I guess you have to be creative with your pejoratives…

  45. Buckie Boy Says:

Grampy McSame says - My friends back in the day we called everything the ‘B’ word, I would be cutting the lawn and I’d say hand me a glass of ‘B’, I had a tasty hunk of ‘B’ on rye yesterday, I would say it the ‘B’ word a thousand times a day, then on day foreigners started saying it, well that was that, we had to come up with a new word, so I started using the ‘C’ word and that was very popular in my political party, we would use it all the time, the ladies thought we were all strong men, real strong, see look at this, impressive, uh….oh dear, I’ve got that creamed corn in my pants again, where in the world does it come from.

Grampy, we all know you have no respect for women, go wash up and take a nap.

  46. lebowski Says:

imho, using b____ just for females and a__h____ just for males is often if not always sexist. i agree that profanity is low brow but sometimes it’s called for — i just a__h____ universally.

ot: are we living in the 50s? why the censoring of profanity? how prudish and puritanical can you get, tp?

  47. 5th Estate Says:

ergo, Castellanos should agree that it’s also sometimes appropriate for McCain to call his wife a cunt?

  48. Shayne Says:

    ThomasMc Says:

Remind me again, why is it ok to call a man a “prick”, but calling a woman anything but a lady is a slur?

Because calling you a “little prick” doesn’t refer to your personality.

  49. chris_hates_freedom Says:

Isn’t personality the ONE thing you should judge others on? Also, I love the comment about how Mrs. Obama would basically pull out a glock, hold it sideways, and cap yo’ ass if you call her a b*tch. Probably better tools in the box to fight sexism than racism. Unless you’re geraldine Ferraro.

  50. chris_hates_freedom Says:

I usually don’t like to criticize free websites for how they work, because to me its as rude as going to someone’s house and criticizing their taste in furniture… but the comment review system is seriously flawed.

Its okay to tell people they have a small pee-pee, but god forbid you use the words in the title of the post, or censored forms of words as they appear in other comments?

I understand my account is new, but if I have to sit it the kids table, I’m just gonna go eat somewhere else.
