Schwarzenegger: Gay marriage may boost California’s economy.

Speaking in San Francisco yesterday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) said he hopes that the state Supreme Court’s recent ruling allowing gay marriage will lead more couples to come to the state to be wed:

You know, I’m wishing everyone good luck with their marriages and I hope that California’s economy is booming because everyone is going to come here and get married.

The San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau also expects a tourism boom this summer, and its website now “promotes a gay travel section” and “explains that same-sex couples are ‘officially allowed to marry in the state of California.’” Schwarzenegger has promised to oppose any amendments banning gay marriage.

  2. misshusseinmolly says:

I can see Arnold’s point. Why let next-door neighbor Nevada make all the money off marriage?

  3. kassandrasduplex says:

One really good way to get the economy booming would be to redistribute the wealth of the oligarchs through PROGRESSIVE TAXATION.
Of course gay rights are important so Arnie’s BS can’t hurt. It’s this slimy endorsement by a neo-fascist like Arnie that allows him and the media to convince everyone he’s progressive and liberal. He ain’t. He’s the hand-picked guy of Ken Lay and Michael Milken (the felon) and he’s bad for California. Hey Arnie! Why don’t you renegotiate the DEBT you put us in when you sold us down the river to New York Bankers for TWENTY years after the so-called Energy Crisis?

my state as well as two of the three bordering states have all advanced to varying degrees up the next step of the escalator of civil rights but other than treating people with dignity and decency nothing significant has changed.

How is it having a piece of paper or certificate of marriage going to boost an economy? Keeping the divorce attorneys busy?

  6. KYJurisDoctor says:

So that’s all the Governor cares about: the economy of California.

Seriously? Two people from NY wed in San Fran, you’ve got their travel expenses, wedding expenses, and the partying with all their wedding guests. Granted, there will be a fair share of couples getting wed a la Las Vegas, but there will be a lot who will have out of state guests as well.

Travel TO the state of you, your spouse AND FAMILY, DUH, All of you staying in the state, spending money, partying, and have a grand old time, possibly taking the honeymoon in the state, as a thank you for recognizing that gay people deserve to be as miserable as the rest of us.
Just joshing, it is ‘BOUT DAMN TIME.

  9. Freedom Rebel says:

Arnold ticked off the male conservatives in his state. There are a bunch that want to leave the state, because of him promoting Gay marriages as revenue.

Why are conservatives so uptight about same sex marriages? How is it personally affecting them, it’s not.. There are so many problems in the world that need to be fixed, this should be the least of their worries.

I think it is great news, more people will be happier, that works for me..

He’ll be a few minutes — the beeper is set to vibrate…

We can always count on the GOP – it’s all about the money, not about the rights of people.

There is a lesson to be learned here.

    PEACE

with gays actually being allowed to marry, it leaves less guys for the closet conservatives to “cruise” on.

  13. had enough says:

    Namtillaku, Alecto

I mentally blocked out the celebration part of the marriage… to me, the act of getting married is synonymous to shackles being placed on ones body.

Sure, Arnold, California needs more people like Florida needs more mosquitos. Be up-front about it, you more white people to come to California.

Good to see a Republican get behind those San Francisco values.

Although I fear he just wants the lesbians to come

  16. sectionop92 says:

More gays and less conservatives = a better California

When Roger Hedgecock is selling Ahnuld down the river, the San Diego neo-cons are all stabbing each other in the back and none too soon in anticipation for November. If any of you want a laugh that’ll make you cry until next Tuesday, see if Steve Francis’ mayoral commericals are on YouTube or the like. The dude hits every political cliche in the book with the “testimony” of local citizens.

Because only white people are gay?

  18. greggp says:

At this point, Arnold would endorse a plan to grind babies into baby oil if it helped California’s economy.

  19. Buckie Boy says:

So let me get this straight, positive economics equals equal rights? Wow, I had no idea.

  20. Democrat Soldier says:

Unlike most right-whining trolls, I do not automatically disagree with a politician based solely on his/her political affiliation. There are some Republic’s that take policy positions with whom I agree.

In this particular case, Gov. Schwarzenegger has taken the true American stance and come out in support for equal rights for everyone in his state. I think he’s gotten his wires crossed in thinking solely about this as a fiscal matter, but at least he’s doing the right thing.

  21. Heraldblog says:

I’ve often thought the economic argument for gay marriage had the strongest chance of winning over a majority of public opinion. Gays have higher incomes and more education than average Americans. They are more likely to hold a passport, and engage in entrepreneurial activities than heteros. Aren’t these the types of people a state wants to move in and set up shop Somebody needs to tell Ahnold to take the economic argument a step further. Theocons will get it, then.

  22. Alecto says:

“Gays have higher incomes and more education than average Americans.”

So it IS Teh GAYS that are the Elitist Rich fu(ks. Damn the GAYS!

  23. AMcG773 says:

I’ve been saying this for years. Just imagine how much money gay men would spend on wedding flowers and catering. It’s a major growth industry.

  24. tarazan says:

He meant couples’ homes will not be foreclosed, they will see more movies, dine and wine together..but no children.
A lot of gays parties will help California businesses..
What kind of a country or state that its economy depeneds on gays to get married?
May be because I’am an old fashion guy, I,ll be reluctant to buy Schwarznegger argument.

  25. GeeDubs says:

Sorry, Tarazan, if you don’t buy the argument. It shouldn’t BE an argument. There is a huge undertow of people, like me, that think the opportunity to publicly declare a commitment to one person is a boon in more than just an economic sense. There’s common decency, for one thing. But, although Ahnult doesn’t quite grasp that point of it, I’ll take what I can get if it’ll keep the NeoNerds from shackeling my prospects once again.

  26. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

This may not be THE argument, but it is AN argument in favor of gay marriage recognition. If it gets one person to accept the concept of civil rights for people with different sexual orientation, then it is a GOOD argument.

  27. Marie says:

For every issue, there are only two considerations by Republicans – how is it about sex and how does it affect their wallets.

  28. ppineault says:

Just so everyone is clear on the issue, I contacted the governor’s office last week. Even though the governor is opposed to the amendment banning gay marriage, he’s powerless to stop it if it passes. (he cannot veto it if it passes; it needs a simple majority (50% +1) to pass)

  29. Squeaky Wheels says:

I always knew Ah-nold was a queer. He’s obviously been overcompensating.
