McCain rejects Hagee’s endorsement.

By Ali on May 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

McCain rejects Hagee’s endorsement.»

CNN reports that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has finally rejected the support of radical pastor John Hagee. McCain’s repudiation comes as recent attention has turned to a sermon in which Hagee said that Hitler was fulfilling God’s will:

McCAIN: Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee’s endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well.

The audio of Hagee’s remarks was first posted by Bruce Wilson on Talk to Action and later circulated by the Huffington Post.

hageecnn.jpg

In February, McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” After controversy broke out over offensive comments made by Hagee, McCain originally evoked Hagee’s support for Israel as his reason for continuing to embrace his support. McCain’s full statement is here.

Digg It!

UPDATE: Hagee has put out a statement saying that he withdraws his endorsement from McCain because he has “become a distraction in what should be a national debate about important issues.”

And the reich-wing MSM will roll over and applaud McBush.

  2. Leftside Annie Says:

If Obama’s not allowed to jettison Wright - then neither should Gramps McWarmonger be allowed to jettison Hagee.

  3. raynman Says:

    Gee, he sounds ‘bitter’…..

  4. Red Pill Says:

Don’t worry–he’ll be trumpeting his support among evangelicals come September, and I guarantee Hagee’s name will be, er, “resurrected.”

  5. ugotmeinsd_619 Says:

Took him long enough to do the “politically correct” thing. I wonder how many people in his political camp it took to convince him to reject Hagee’s endorsement. I wonder if it took a poll for him to make his decision. He should have rejected Hagee in the beginning!

  6. oldtree Says:

This is a clear act of Nazi appeasement in time of war.

Too late Johnny. Lots of You Tube material out there with you accepting the help. But if you are cleaning house lets get rid of Rod Parsely as well. Then when you see the backlash from the American Taliban that makes up your party’s base you will change your mind again and welcome their endorsements like the flip flopper you have become.

  9. LividLib Says:

I imagine Herr Hagee’s endorsement also included a contribution to the McSame campaign. Any chance McLame returned those $$$ to fu(king nazi?

  10. DallasNE Says:

So much for McCain’s self-proclaimed judgement. Hagee’s words were always even more extreme than those of Rev. Wright but they received scant attention. McCain’s free-ride is now slightly less free. The playing field is still far from even but it is inching more in line. McCain’s vetting process was all but non-existent when he was doing his full-court press for Hagee’s endorsement. Now he has to throw him under the bus. Such is life.

  11. Tawdry Says:

This shows just how flawed a leader John McCain would be and is. He doesn’t properly check the backgrounds of his staff (lobbyists galore) or vet the people he snuggles up to for endorsements. My god, if you spent one minute on a Sunday morning listening to Hagee you would know exactly what he stands for.

  12. Paul W Says:

    Leftside Annie–

If Obama’s not allowed to jettison Wright - then neither should Gramps McWarmonger be allowed to jettison Hagee.

Especially as McCain actively sought Hagee’s endorsement in the first place. And, as previously mentioned here, while Obama clearly doesn’t share Wright’s seperatist views, McCain and Hagee do share common goals such as the destuction of Iran along with unflagging support for Israel,

After controversy broke out over other offensive comments by Hagee, McCain originally evoked Hagee’s support for Israel as his reason for continuing to embrace his support.

Grampy McSame says - My friends back in the day Hagee was served for dinner every Thursday, Hagee and potatoes were my favorite, we all loved Hagee but now Hagee has a sour taste, don’t know why I loved Hagee but now I don’t, I used to like small dogs too, but now I don’t, I like big dogs that have all there hair shaved off, we used to do that back in the day, shave our dogs, but now a days people are shaving their cats…I sure hope that is warm peach cobbler I just sat in.

Grampy you are confused about the ’shaving their cats’, but on this forum I’ll give you a pass on that one.

  14. S.D. Says:

Amusingly, if he had not done this, The Media would not have covered Hagee’s words…

  15. backup Says:

It took to long, but McCain has finally done the right thing.

  16. lokidog Says:

If Grampa Munster McCain had any sense, he’d have rejected Bush’s “endorsement” at the same time. A literal “double dump”.

And, yes, I do mean “dump” in the fecal sense, the only kind the GOP comprehends.

  17. Zimzone Says:

McMIA flips again…or was this a flop?

Hagee makes Rev. Wright look like a bastion of innocence.

This dude is batshit crazy! He actually believes he can ‘move up’ end times by initiating war with Iran. Oh, & he’s Texan, too.

I’ve heard of all hat & no horse, but Hagee’s all horse & no hat.

Way, way, way too late. Not that it will be reported.

  21. galmud Says:

Too late McCain. Hagee has a long record and a long list of extremely hateful and bigoted statements (of course mostly against gays and Muslims so then its OK right?). To actively seek and accept his endorsement with honor and pride shows lack of judgment

  22. Zooey Says:

Oops, not that it will be reported the way it was with Obama and Wright.

  23. Leftside Annie Says:

Hagee is the living embodiment of the Deadly Sin of GLUTTONY.

  24. galmud Says:

And what a pitiful rejection it was. Not even 100 words and half of it was about Obama and Reverend Wright.

  25. GSD Says:

    Frip-frop!

So according to Hagee’s lexicon, Dick Cheney is a hunter and that makes him a Nazi.

    Sounds simple enough to me.

  26. Leftside Annie Says:

Hagee has put out a statement saying that he withdraws his endorsement from McCain because he has “become a distraction in what should be a national debate about important issues.”

Well, I guess you’ve been TOLD, Gramps. Yer goin’ to Hell fer shure now!!

    *snicker*

  27. Prytania Says:

I agree he should have done this sooner. Hagee should be sacrificed to the God of mother nature…and gays. I doubt either would take the time to spit on him though.

  28. backup Says:

Okay, my glass is half full, but forget about McCain for a minute.

The good news is, Hagee type bigotry is being nearly universally repudiated. That’s progress. And something to be optimistic about.

Okay, my minute is up. Continue with associations to McCain and his bad judgement for accepting the endorsement to begin with.

  29. dbadass Says:

Prytania, do you have a problem with gays and nature?

  30. CitizenX Says:

For the better part of 18 years I attended fundie churches with my ex-wife and hagees comments are not too out of line with their beliefs. I had many a moment of disbelief when I was told that Catholics were condemned to hell, that the Pope was right up their with the devil and that Mother Teresa would burn in hell, no matter what good works she did.

If you are a robertson, hagee, swaggart fundie then this talk is not that abnormal. hagee was preaching to the choir.

Not just accepting Hagee’s endorsement, but SEEKING IT OUT. Very poor judgment, very poorly vetted.

  32. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Fair point, Cap’n, and you’re right, this is a positive step. The depressing thing is it took soooo long to happen, and it wasn’t anything Hagee said about gays or Catholics that tripped the switch — it was Hitler. Apparently even McCain can’t have that.

That’s because Mc Cain didn’t sit in a church for twenty years listening(or not listening)to Hagee’s bullshit like Obama did with Wright. Mc Cain didn’t have Hagee reside over his marriage like Obama had Wright do. His children weren’t baptised by Hagee, as Obamas were by Wright. Very simple comparison that I know you can understand, but will choose no to.

I understand perfectly, thank you. You have your talking points, and cannot deviate from them.

McCain SOUGHT OUT Hagee’s endorsement even though he knew what he was, and he continued to embrace this endorsement until the Hitler love-fest.

I know you understand this, but will suffer from cognitive dissonance if you think very hard about this.

Very simple indeed! You are correct there. On top of being simple , it’s comparing apples and oranges. How long did McCain take to repudiate Hagee? Now that is a comparison of apples to apples. Oh yeah, well AFTER it was known that Hagee was a racist pig. Keep choosing to believe the losers Prytania.

McCain believes in loyalty far more than he believes in truth. He can’t help it, he is a military drone.

Obama sat in that church with his family and listened(or didn’t listen) for twenty years. The time line is in play for Obama. I agree with your argument about Mc Cain and when he finally decided he’d had enough with Hagee. Twenty years compared to one year is a big difference. Oprah frickin Winfrey knew what Wright was about and left his church after a few hate filled sermons. If Oprah gets it, why couldn’t Obama and Michelle get the messages of hate. I give Michelle a pass since this is the first time in her adult life that she has been proud to be an American.

I just checked a dictionary and you are correct Zooey. After reading the dictionary I am more confused than I thought I was. LOL The English language has so many exceptions to rules that I am even more impressed when people come from other countries without knowing a word of English and somehow end up not just getting by but becoming fluent. My wife and I are going to China in September and trying to learn just a few words - this not so old dog finds it painful!

  58. dbadass Says:

  61. Leftside Annie Says:

Pry, darling, pray tell me, what OTHER sermons preached by Rev. Wright have you listened to…? None? What a surprise!!

You condemn this man based on a grand total of, what? 3 minutes? Out of his 20+ years in the pulpit?

And, that said, do tell me, where was Rev. Wright wrong when he said that America’s “chickens are coming home to roost” and that 9/11 could be blamed on our own actions in the world…? Where and how is that wrong?

I’ll accept that blaming the government for creating AIDS specifically to harm blacks is way out there — but, it’s not so truly far out there when you consider that the government used syphillis to experiment on black men in the 1940’s, right? Remember the Tuskeegee Experiment, Prytania?

So tell me, if you compare Rev. Wright’s words - head to head - with Hagee’s, which of them is batsh*t crazier?

I’m picking Hagee with his God sending Hitler and Katrina BS.

    You?

  62. Zooey Says:

Great argument, Leftside Annie — one point: The men in the Tuskeegee studies were not intentionally infected with syphillis, they were already infected when chosen for the study. The doctors failed to inform their patients of their condition, failed to obtain proper consent, and in general threw ethics clear out of the window, but they did not infect their subjects.

  63. pwapvt Says:

It just proves that you can crap on any other race or religion in todays political world, but don’t mess with Israel. Hagee peed all over the Catholic church without McLaim saying boo. But the Jews & Israel, oh no must repudiate now!

  64. Tired Of Fighting Says:

It’s ok to offend the Poor, the Meek, the Destitute, and the weak. Its ok to offend Gays, and the people of New Orleans.

But now after hearing him say some offensive things about the Jews (which were offensive), John McCain decides that NOW is the time to reject Mr. Hagee’s comments!!

What will George McLieberman do now? He’s all about John Hagee.

How many of Wrights sermons have you heard beyond the 5 second soundbites floating around? You think a man who remembers having to drink at different water fountains than whites doesnt have any reason for being angry? Heck, I consider myself a pretty reasonable messiah, but if I had to put up with that kind of treatment, i probably would have been a black panther, and there is NO way i would have volunteered to go fight and possibly die for a country that treated me that way…

  69. Jackie Says:

Turning in one Wacko Minister for another one. The new Wacko Minister Teflon John picked is just as bad as Hagee. Look for another choice to come soon. I say call Ralph Reed back he’s Satan Junior and can trick the Church goes as he did before.

  70. pete Says:

I’m an atheist. I think anyone who devotes their entire lives to a religion is delusional. So, I expect preachers to say ridiculous things. That’s my bias.

I took the time to read/view just about everything available about Rev. Wright. And I’ve viewed/read just about all I could stomach of Pastor Hagee.

Rev. Wright has made a few statements critical of the United States. Pastor Hagee is consistent in his condemnation of EVERYONE who doesn’t share his narrow, perverted, hateful, evil world view.

Rev. Wright decries the faults in our society. Pastor Hagee calls for war and is, as John McCain once said, “an agent of intolerance”. Rev. Wright has never been involved in a financial/moral scandal. Hagee has. I’m also pretty sure that Rev. Wright wouldn’t endorse someone who has been vocal in criticizing his Faith for political reasons. Hagee endorsed McCain simply to prevent a woman, a black man, or any Dem. from winning the election. I could go on for hours, but, those are the big ones.

Based on my research I have come to a conclusion. I would trust Rev. Wright to manage my affairs or care for my children. I wouldn’t trust Pastor Hagee within 100 yards of my kids or my wallet. Pastor Hagee is the one who’s whole existence is devoted to “unamerican” goals. And McPander Bear courted him, only, to gain a few votes in the Texas primary. I sincerely hope that Hagee becomes a milstone around McPander Bear’s neck. They deserve each other.

  71. Chocolate Jesus Says:

as an upside for him, I think its safe to say that McCain has the Aryan Nation vote in the bag. I’m going to start calling him “McSmoochy”…try picturing McCain in Edward Nortons place at the natzi rally in Death to Smoochy..

“my friends….” then the blinding light comes down…..McCain stands aghast as he sees the legions of Jackbooted Stormtroopers in front of him…”Hiel McSmoochy! Hiel McSmoochy! “

  72. Leftside Annie Says:

    Zooey, thanks for the clarification.

I actually did not say that the government infected the men with syphillis. I said they “used” syphillis. That’s rather a hair split, but the point remains. The GOVERNMENT did experiment on black men in an absolutely unconscionable and evil way, therefore it’s not too far beyond the realm of possibility to posit that they might do something else like that…

  73. Zooey Says:

My apologies, Annie. I mis-read your post. You are absolutely correct that it’s not much of a stretch to believe our government would perform secret experiments on the people.

I never thought I’d think something like that…

  74. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >And how come theres no video from these reich-wing so-called >preachers, preaching their “hateful” sermons?

They exist, if the dems have an ounce of brains they are scouring church arcvhives for them, because the mudslinging by MCCain proxys is going to get nasty, as much as he going to falsely claim hes not involved. I dont know how easy it would be to get ahold of, but I hope people are trying. I’m sure the Clintons used their influence with the african american community to help dredge up that 5 second wright soundbyte..
if MCcains people would have found it eventually, im glad it came out when it did..but if it would have languished in obscurity were in not to the Clintonistas links to black churches..well…curse her..its a hypthetical we will never know, unfortunately..

  75. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >I never thought I’d think something like that…

I’ll say it again like I’ve said it before: In this life, there are no good guys. At least, none holding any signifigant power. When people free themselves from this StarWarsian notion of “good versus evil” only then will there be a true spiritual awakening with the power to change this world for the better,,.,

  77. Robt Says:

right, McCain was for their endorsements before he was against them>>>>>>

But the flocks will still vote for him now. And Hagee drools for his return payment if McCain becomes President.

  78. GodsFriend Says:

It amazes me how ignorant people are to Gods word, which Pastor Hagee preaches. Myself I would only endorse Jesus as my leader. As God clearly says if you are a friend to this world you are his enemy. Christians know that God is in charge and we do have tyrants in charge of many different countries that are bringing the climax of Jesus’s return, Not only in other countries but that of the USA also. As we are the babylon spoken of in the bible. Once you accept Jesus as your savior you then become a Jew. Anyone against Israel is an enemy of Gods! I believe these candidates are as chosen by God for his return as satan chose Hitler to destroy Gods people. But as the bible states not even satan can do anything without Gods permission, and what satan intends for complete destruction, God use’s for good. It would benefit people to educate themselves on Gods word before judging those who truly know it and practice it.

  79. GodsFriend Says:

I would like to add that pastor’s through out the USA have become slaves to the almighty dollar. It is the republicans who cater to the rich and steal from the poor. If we claim to be one nation under God, should we not obey Gods laws, statues and commandments? Even pastor’s are human with sin.
