Boston’s Comcast network fires local newsman for protesting Bill O’Reilly.

Last month, local Boston news reporter Barry Nolan announced that he would be mounting a campaign to protest the fact that Bill O’Reilly was awarded an Emmy Award by the Boston/New England Chapter. Nolan insisted that O’Reilly is “a mental case” who shouldn’t be held up as an example of journalistic integrity. The Boston Herald reports that Nolan’s activism against O’Reilly has cost him his job:

nolan.gifCN8 has fired veteran TV journalist Barry Nolan for publicly protesting the decision by the local Emmy Awards to honor Fox News blowhard Bill O’Reilly.

Nolan tells MediaBiz he was fired Tuesday following a two-week, unpaid suspension.

“I knew going in that there was serious risk that I’d lose my job,” Nolan said yesterday, “but nobody likes it when people tell them to stifle, not even Edith Bunker.”

Hmmmm, I wonder who owns the Boston Herald?

    Billdo doesn't play nice.

    Billdo is NOT a journalist.

Billdo's prior experience was a gossip show.

Billdo's present experience is a gossip show.

Billdo is a gossip & NOT a journalist.

  2. Art Says:

The article states that “When they announced O’Reilly, people booed,”
Are they going to fire all those people too.
Oreilly is probably lapping this up. He loves power... and he loves to be feared.

So much for the myth of a librul media.

  5. DieNowForPeace Says:

Mr. Nolan will be rewarded for his fortitude by another media outlet.

Just not one that's part of Big Brother's Propaganda Arm.

  6. bigeugene Says:

Quick, get that man's resume to Keith Olbermann.

  7. trollsbwild Says:

Very sorry to hear about this, but hopefully Mr. Nolan will be able to find employment with a company with integrity.

  8. raynman Says:

Looks like Comcast knuckled under to Billo's bluster. Hate to say it, but at least NBC has some integrity to standing up to the blowhard.

I had Comcast for a while and once I started paying attention, I could tell that they had a right-leaning bias. The main Comcast site set as your homepage by default displayed mostly news with a subtle right-tinge.

Their On-Demand cable has a "Buzz" channel which allows you to compete in a trivia game against other people somewhat near where you live. The questions were always worded with a bias and at one point I remember a question that "made fun" of Al Gore for "inventing the internet"... and other things on that level. I cancelled my service as soon as I didn't have to pay them a cancellation fee and they're still trying to screw me out of more money. They are super-shady, underhanded, incompetent, and don't care at all about their customers... just like this Administration.

This doesn't really surprise me at all.

Here in Atlanta you have to pay around $15 more a month to receive the package that has MSNBC in it!

  12. americangoy Says:

    Thank You, Mr. Barry Nolan.

Good luck with your new career, where hopefully you will not have to utter treasonous statements and lies on a daily basis to fulfill directives from management.

  13. Buckie Boy Says:

Ethics and backbone will get you fired in todays Criminal Conservative atmosphere.

  14. lm945 Says:

    Nolan should sue.

The first amendment is the law. At least for a little while longer. You can't be fired from your job for exercising your first amendment right to free speech.

  15. McWars Says:

In a country becoming more progressive all the time, this act by the shriveling right-wing will bring Mr. Nolan upward advancement.

The right never learns; they just put Mr. Nolan on the map!

  16. bobo Says:

Congratulation on bowing down to GOP fascism and firing a patriot!
Barry had the sense of decency to point out what most true moral Americans have voiced! You caving in to a few uninformed is obviously only a financial tactic to renegotiate his contract and has nothing to do with Bill-O. Since you are cut from the same slime as these fascist GOP and Fixed News I’m sure he will be better off with out your impeding censorship!

  17. Freedom Rebel Says:

Comcast Cable are the ones that own CN8-Comcast Cable Eastern Division. Which is where Barry Nolan worked. Brian L. Roberts is Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation. The only thing I could find is that he was a on nonpartisan host committee for the 2000 Republican National Convention.

In 2004, Comcast submitted a $66 billion hostile bid for Disney, which was promptly rejected. Mr. Roberts made 20.8 million last year, down from his 26 million in 2006. I would say he most likely is supporting John McCain to keep more money in his pocket.

It is a shame that Mr. Roberts doesn't see the value of having a journalist like Barry Nolan on staff. Barry gives us hope that there are still News Reporters with integrity that will stand up and be heard, even at the cost of their job. Thank you Barry Nolan, Good Luck..

  18. Leporello Says:

Let's hear it for Barry Nolan! At last someone in the MSM has the Guts to say that BillO is a raging loon! I'm sorry that he had to pay the price, but at least this proves that American values Still exist! As Abraham Lincoln once said, 'I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts.' At last Somebody's speaking the truth to power!
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
    Abu Ben Hussein Leporello.

  19. Kay Says:

As a Boston resident, I am proud of Barry Nolan!
    Hats off to you, Barry!

(and O'Liely is a nut job...)

  20. theswan Says:

Comcast is a communications oxymoron, yes? They are masters of stiffling free speach and would love to see an end net neutrality. They just love working against their stated purpose. Why would any body invest in this mission?

  21. jurassicpork Says:

Man, I grew up watching Barry.

    friendsofronmexico Says:

Another liberal wingnutt bites the dust.
    -------------------

More proof of the "liberal media", huh?

Liberals being fired for stating not supporting the message.

    Real liberal.

"The media is only as liberal as the conservative corporations that own them."

  23. piltdown Says:

    And wait.

"Wingnut" is a right-wing term. Interesting how you're using it to smear a liberal.

  24. super8pictures Says:

I think this should let everyone know the value of an Emmy. What may have previously been understood as something prestigious - turns out to be something you buy. An Emmy is certainly not a Pulitzer!

Didn't BillO lie about winning an Emmy previously? I believe he lied about winning a few different awards. Apparently he can stop lying about winning industry awards.
