State Dept. employees deface portraits of Bush, Cheney and Rice with ‘fake mustaches.’

In 2003, Bush administration officials took down historic photos depicting significant moments in American diplomatic history. They replaced them “with huge color glossies extolling the diplomatic feats” of the Bush administration. Recently, however, things have taken “a turn for the worse” as unhappy State Department employees took matters into their own hands:

Outside the State Department ’s press briefing room on the department’s 2nd floor hang large official photos of Bush, Rice and Vice President Dick Cheney. The pictures were, er…modified by persons unknown. (We did not personally witness this, we must admit — or we’d have a photo to post). We’re talking fake mustaches and the like. The defacements were promptly cleaned up. They reappeared.

McClatchy’s “Nukes & Spooks” blog asks, “Further evidence that the Bushies are losing control as they enter their final months?”

  4. Shayne says:

    All the respect they deserve.

  5. leftcoast says:

Actually, these were not defacements, but an attempt to repair Bush’s impish smirk.
Freedom Medals all around. MT, you didn’t do this did you?

  6. Bushed says:

Now THAT’S some G-damned diplomacy! Funniest thing I’ve heard all week. That one with Bush and the big brown mustache? No, that’s a new photo. It was taken right after the Saudis gave him a dirty sanchez last weekend!

  7. mary says:

lol – I can’t help but wonder if any of the mustaches resembled Hitler’s.

There’s probably a security camera focused on that hallway now!

  8. LibertyLover says:

Hopefully, these pictures will be replaced with the originals on January 20th, 2009 and these Bush photos chalked up to just a very embarrassing part of America’s history. Or perhaps they can be sent to be hung in the gas station in Crawford, TX that will house the Bush Presidential Library

  9. Leftside Annie says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I salute those American patriots! Good job!

  10. CitiDC says:

Add this to the list of “mysteries” (along with the disappearance of Iraq reconstruction money, location of Saddam, location of e-mails, etc) that the Administration fails to solve.

  11. CitiDC says:

    Location of Osama, that is.

  12. Leftside Annie says:

    “Diplomatic feats”…?

    What diplomatic feats??

  13. Talphon says:

So this is it. The writing is literally on the wall.

  14. Zooey says:

That is frickin’ hilarious! Next thing you know, the Secret Service will be tripping the Chimp. ;)

  15. Leporello says:

Here’s to the American Spirit; it’s still alive and well! It may not be the Boston Tea Party, but the State Department Beautification Inititiative shows that the spirit of 1776 still lives! To quote Susan B. Anthony, ‘Resistance to tyrany is obedience to God’.
Impeach Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution! And promotions to the American Artists at the State Department!

Hey,maybe someone could slap a sticker on dumbya’s back that says “IMPEACH ME!”

  17. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Turn about is fair play. After all, Bush, Cheney and Rice have been defacing America for the last 7.321 years…

  18. Saint Augustine says:

I wonder what the administration will do to stop this?

If they installed hidden video cameras or posted a guard in the hall it would be more than they’ve done with more important problems.

Now we need a copy of that picture made available for all to try out their artistic skills on. Post them everywhere. I can even see an ad for the Famous Artists Art School… “Can you draw a mustache on the monkey/”

I hope they go for the trick where the one guy kneels down behind Chimpy and the other shoves him over.

  20. linda says:

bwahahaha — little hitler mustaches, i presume…that’s excellent.

  21. Erroll says:

If the State Department were really honest, they would place photos of this along the press briefing room.

I was waiting all day for something to smile about. Thanks TP!

  23. Erroll says:

Interspersed among photos like those would also be more photos of realism, such as this one.

I have a feeling that once Bush is out of office and can no longer destroy peoples’ careers, we will see all kinds of whistle-blowers coming forward pointing out incompetence or outright criminal behavior from this administration.

We’ve already seen many cases (Mike Brown from FEMA, Christie Todd Whitman at the EPA, David Kuo from Bush’s faith-based programs, etc.), so I have a feeling the number of people who come forward will be enormous.

  27. galmud says:

  28. Nevar says:

I can’t wait for the “Kick Me” signs to start showing up on their backs….

  29. octamethyl says:

A ‘dirty sanchez’ on a picture of bush.
    priceless!

  30. Loneoak says:

Fake mustaches for a fake President!

  31. JMOHR says:

Have you ever before seen such a cult of personality imposed by the a President? This is like pictures of Stalin, Saddam or maybe Hitler. This is not what you expect in a democracy. Remember HUD and the personal tribute to himself?

Ok, I know FDR’s pictures appeared all over the country. That was a little different. He did not go out posting them. People liked him and did it on their own. That is different. This is just spooky.

  32. nanlichi says:

Watch the Repugs call for an investigation. They are good at steroid users and mustache artists. Torture and cover ups? Not so much.

  33. Nevar says:

    Condi? With a mustache?
    Rrrrrrowwwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr….

    (Sorry, couldn’t resist. Hope I didn’t spoil anyones dinner…)

  34. nofltwlt says:

Love it! I just love it!

These enhanced photos will become very valuable so hold on to them.

  35. zuch says:

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving person. LOL….

I bet if you did a poll of mothers of George W. Bush, you’d find that 100% thinks that he’s a berk and an a$$.

    Cheers,

  36. abarts says:

Actually, I’m more shocked at the lack of security cameras. That said, Well done!

  37. questioneverything says:

Priceless. Now, if only somebody would come forward and testify about what has really been going on in the State Department, let alone the DOJ.

  38. zuch says:

    #28 galmud:

I bet its the Iranians! Or at least the pen must be Iranian

Yes. They have stamped on the barrel, “This pen made in the Revolutionary Islamic Dictatorship of Iran and we’re gonna getcha.”

Just like the mortar shells that Iraq is sending to Iran, labeled in English and labeled with American date formats.

    Cheers,

  39. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin says:

Working at the State Department for the last 7 years must be absolute hell.

  40. Jess Wonderin says:

The REAL mystery is WHERE did they find ANY “Great Moments In Bushland Diplomacy” let alone enough to line a hallway . . .

  41. sacopenapa says:

He who painted those mustaches should be held as a HERO!!!!!

  42. zuch says:

    #40 (I said):

Just like the mortar shells that Iraq is sending to Iran, labeled in English and labeled with American date formats.

Should have been “Iran is sending to Iraq”. But you folks knew that….

    Cheers,

the emperor has no clothes on, but he has been seen sporting a new mustache.

lol, highest praise for the anonymous white house artist

From Kimya Dawson “Loose Lips” (featured in the movie ‘Juno’):

shysters live from scheme to scheme and my 4th quarter pipe dreams
are seeming more and more worth fighting for
so i’ll curate some situations, make my job a big vacation
and i’ll say F**K BUSH AND F**K THIS WAR
my war paint is sharpie ink and i’ll show you how much my shit stinks
and ask you what you think because your thoughts and words are powerful
they think we’re disposable, well both my thumbs opposable
are spelled out on a double word and triple letter score

  45. rkrapidcity says:

How childish and stupid. Liberals always thinking with their feelings not their heads. You got a problem with some one confront them with wit and wisdom not childish crap like this. Just shows the disrespect and how self absorbed these people are.
Hope your people get Happy when a democrat gets in there…you think we have a defecit now just wait.

  46. Clownfish says:

I’m in the U.S. Foreign Service, and will be heading back to the State Department for a couple of months in July. I’ll keep my eyes open! Unfortunaley, cameras are not allowed, thus I will not be able to take any photos.

PS: This is a favorite site of State Department Employees. Unlike the DOD, most of us lean quite a bit left.

  47. Evil Spaniard says:

Really the Condi’s portrait needed another mustache?

  48. veggiemom43 says:

This is a message for rkrapidcity. Have you been living under a rock? Do you recall how the Democratic President Clinton eliminated the deficit and created a surplus? And don’t go off on how he screwed an intern: Bush and his inbred junta have been screwing the nation!

As for a response to this blog, my only regret is that they didn’t use permanent ink! They have put this country through a shredder and should hide in shame.

  49. Uncle Ho says:

    rk; GO PHUCK YOURSELF!!!!!

  50. Uncle Ho says:

These anonymous Rembrandts deserve the Medal of Honor (at least the Medal of Freedom)

However, like the cult of Hitler, or the cult of Stalin, the cult of Bush would send them to a one-way trip to Gitmo for “water-sports” if ever identified.

  51. Cal Malenky says:

A full investigation will follow. Suspects will be rounded up, sent to GitMo and waterboarded until they ‘fess up.

  52. Lynda says:

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!

I say it’s time to have a little light mood-lifting, cheery entertainment after the beastly heavy downer times we’ve been experiencing the last 7 years or so.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!

Just wait for what people do when the trappings and protection of the office evaporate when Bush leaves! This is exactly what you get for buying or extorting loyalty instead of earning it….

  53. DallasNE says:

I am surprised that there are no cameras overseeing these walls since we are a camera happy nation. You reap what you sow, as the old saying goes.

  54. YouCantHandleDaTruth says:

    NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Gloryless leader says:

I’d have put in horns and beards too

  56. Nevar says:
