Bush not drawing funds for 2008 GOP campaigns.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that with President Bush’s approval rating at “all-time lows,” he just isn’t able to bring in money for Republican candidates like he used to:

Even in campaigns for Congress, where White House officials are focusing their political efforts, Mr. Bush’s impact appears to be reduced. Notably, he has raised only $36.6 million for Republican candidates and committees through early May, compared with $66.6 million last year and $131.6 million in 2006, according to Republican National Committee figures.

In fact, while Bush is expected to join Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) at fundraising events next week, WSJ adds that “it is unlikely Mr. Bush will be seen much with the candidate.”

Update White House Spokesman Tony Fratto said the events will be in private residences and closed to the press. "You know the way that goes," Fratto told reporters. "This is the way we’ve always done it." But as Window on Washington notes, "It’s not the way other presidents always have done it. Reporters were allowed into fundraising events President Clinton attended at private homes."

Not even repugs want to throw their money down a hole in the ground.

0 credibility might have something to do with that.

Or perhaps, repugs only give their money to causes they know they can buy.

Come January 2009 it will be unlikely he will be seen with anybody except the Leavenworth guards.

Oh, oh. That’s BADS news for the GOP.

Why not? They’re almost exactly the same in just about every way.

I guess Sen. McCain is trying to distance himself from the most un-popular President in this millinnium, and the past 80 years. If they are seen together, people will realize that McCain represents a third Bush term!

Then again, Jonny “flip-flop” McSame-as-Bush is going to do anything to distance himself from the truth: Bush Part 3! ;-)

Or maybe Dubya will be only seen looking out of the basement window of Bab’s ranch house in Uruguay.

  10. 5th Estate says:

On the other hand, Bush “raised” an average of $100 billion a year for six years in a row, for Iraq (well, coerced really).

Just for fun, conjecturing “$1,000 a plate” then 36,600 people really, really like him. Sounds about right.

Indeed. Bush has said he will campaign for McCain. Bush is delusional if he thinks that will help as a lot of conservatives now realize the damage Bush has done to “the Brand” (the Cons of course ignore their own responsibility as not just enablers but cheerleaders).

McCain of course needs all the help he can get from the now diminished GOP base to whom he now aggresively panders. Frnakly the pandering should be enough, he shoudln’t need Bush at all. But as McCain is delusional too he probably thinks he does to some extent. He’s damnd if he does and he;s damned if he doesn’t.

“Oh what wicked webs we weave when we conspire to decieve” ( roughly)

Wow, gigi. You almost sounded like you believed it. Maybe repeat it a few more times and you can convince yourself. That usually works with you guys, right?

  15. 5th Estate says:

Come to think of it, the WSJ is probably HOPING and PRAYIN that Bush will lay low.

It is so weird that the WSJ can produce some excellent investigative reporting (Walter Reed for example)and yet its executive editors are such dogmatic partisan hacks. The NY Times is quite similar.

All the more reason to keep putting out all of the pictures of McCain hugging Bush, Bush with his arm around McCain… and never let it be forgotten that McBush is tied at the hip to chimpy.

That was good GG, I spilled coffee on the keyboard.

Thanks for the morning laugh, you may be an unconscionable sycophant whore for Bush, but at least you have a sense of humor.

  24. Dr. Grumpus says:

In a little known provision tucked away in the Patriot Act, it is against the law for a U.S. citizen to not have a photograph taken with the POTUS should the POTUS request it. (Com’on, do you REALLY know everything that is included in the Patriot Act?)

Hence, the new Republican fund-raising strategy: How much are people willing to pay to avoid such a photograph from being taken?

  25. GSD says:

McCain and Bush should arrive at their campaign events on a helicopter dildo.

    Good Golly,

How DARE you insult OUR DEAR DECIDER by implying that St. John McAnger distance himself from Dear Leader Bush.

    How DARE you!

And we all know the story of a southern private college where many of the faculty and students are protesting Dubya’s invitation to (mis)speak at their commencement.

And the only reason HE was invited was because Barney the wonder dog was already booked up.

I’ve noticed a precipitous drop in the fundraising ability of Republicans in general since Jack Abramoff got thrown in jail.
