Dead Kennedys singer responds to Savage: How the hell does he get away with stuff like this?

Earlier this week, after Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) was diagnosed with a brain tumor, right-wing talker Michael Savage offensively mocked Kennedy’s condition by playing the Dead Kennedys song “California Über Alles” and reading aloud its lyrics on his radio show. In an expletive-laden interview with the Boston Phoenix, Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra responded to Savage’s use of his song, saying he took the “song way the hell out of context and did it deliberately.” From the interview:

But the bigger issue is Savage himself and how the hell he gets away with stuff like saying this, and saying that people with AIDS should be put in concentration camps. And then when people protest at the station, he calls on his own listeners to come down and beat them up.

The commercial he made when running for mayor of San Francisco was classic: in response to his opponent (Dianne Feinstein) sweeping a sidewalk to represent “cleaning up the city”, he took out a vacuum cleaner on her lawn… classic!

For all of the intentional shenanigans of his “campaign”… he did actually want to require police officers to run for elections, voted on by the people of the neighborhoods they patrol, which I think is an amazing idea.

b2m, the problem you’re having is that you conflate “disagreement” with “abuse”. There are several conservatives who disagree with articles, positions and commentors here, but they can do so in a respectful manner, while addressing the topic of the thread, and without insulting individuals, or progressives in general with their every post.

See, it’s the scattershot insults, the lack of sensible comments and the desire to simply stir things up that we find abusive. These just happen to fall within your area of expertise, oddly enough.

    Hope this helps.

Alejandro, your response is sound, but there are other affects of actions and speech besides legal ones.

Free speech does not guarantee that society will embrace that speech, only that it won’t be punished by law. I think when Jello Biafra (or anybody) asks how Savage Wiener can “get away” with stuff like this, he’s asking how he can say tasteless and hateful things on the radio and suffer no meaningful consequences.

If sponsors decide they are no longer willing to associate themselves with a viewpoint that doesn’t enhance their interests, that’s not censorship. It’s the business of advertising and broadcasting.

Maybe what we should be asking is why is there a big enough audience for this kind of speech that the man can make a more-than-comfortable living from it.

  44. StratRat says:

The trolls here have absolutely no ground on which to stand by supporting the bigot known as Weiner. None. They can rationalize their feelings all day long, but at the end of it, he speaks for them. He speaks for them because they are too cowardly to speak rudely to those who are different than they are. Weiner hides behid his microphone, the trolls hide behind Weiner. Both are losers.

The reasons why Savage says what he says (and “gets away with it”) are:

    a) Because it’s the truth.

    b) There are 12 million people who agree with him.

    c) Sponsors like when a host can garner 12 million loyal listeners, because it’s all about making money, as far as most sponsors go.

Why do you think liberal radio constantly flops (i.e. Al Franken)?

    a) They lie constantly. Actually, I’m not sure if “lying” is the right word. “Clueless” probably explains it better.

    b) Nobody listens because the hosts are intellectually bancrupt.

    c) Sponsors give up on them.

It’s really that simple. Why all the hate from you left wingers all the time?

Can’t we all just get along?

Savage Little Weiner has 12 million listeners because mental furballs such as yourself believe the same moronic things Weiner does ; and you are a mindless little cretin who loyally turns that crap on rather than allowing yourself to hear other opinions in search of actual truth because that would take an enlightened and open mind and actual work which you and the other morons who tune that putz in are unwilling to do…………

Hillary Clinton: “Why Would I Drop Out Before Barack Obama Is Assassinated?”

    [...]
In an interview with the editorial board of the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader today, Hillary Clinton brought up Bobby Kennedy’s June, 1968 assassination as an argument against her dropping out of the democratic primary.

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it,” she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

She has a point: June is a great month for political assassinations.

Why drop out of the race before all the assassins have had their say?

After all, we know Barack Obama has received multiple death threats– because he is black, of course, and because some of our fellow citizens think he’s a secret Muslim terrorist who is going to take the oath of office on the Koran and make us all pray to Mecca five times a day with that screechy music coming over the loudspeakers(?) and then he’ll fly Air Force One into the White House(?).

And the truth is, Obama has consistently failed to win over those voters who want to see him murdered.

Actually, you know what? Screw making silly jokes about this. THIS IS INSANE. When I first read that Hillary quote, I lost my breath. I’m not naive: Everyone has thought about the possibility of Obama getting assassinated. For the vast majority of us, it is a dreadful, terrifying scenario. . . but it is one that has crossed our minds.

THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT IS APPROPRIATE TO BASE A RIVAL CAMPAIGN STRATEGY ON IT.

    Dear God.

I have memories of the 60’s and the assassinations and the trauma, chaos and turmoil – why anyone would comment aloud the way she did was beyond the pale – she is the one with many years of “experience” – with the savvy knowledge of how campaigns work – with the seasoned campaign staff – with the foremr president as her confidante —- it’s hard to acept that this was accidental.

Transcript from the Argus-Leader’s editorial board meeting:

HRC: People have been trying to push me out of this ever since Iowa.

    Q: Why?

HRC: I don’t know. I don’t know. I find it curious. Because it is unprecedented in history. I don’t understand it. Between my opponent and his camp and some in the media there has been this urgency to end this. And historically, that makes no sense. So I find it a bit of a mystery.

Q: So you don’t buy the party unity argument?

HRC: I don’t because again I’ve been around long enough. My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?

We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it. There’s lots of speculation about why it is.

    Q: What is your speculation?

I don’t know. I find it curious. And I don’t want to attribute motives or strategies to people because I don’t really know, but it’s a historical curiosity to me.

i don’t know what “leaders” she’s looking to, but she’s
    getting the wrong messages…

  68. katy says:

thank you, mcwars… that was a unique comment… and thoughtful…

there’s never been a doubt in MY mind that a woman would
make a most excellent president… i hope this won’t have been
    a setback to that future…

  69. Leftside Annie says:

Barbara Boxer would make an excellent president.

But Hillary? She lost me forever today. She has made a Faustian bargain exactly like John McCain’s: she has sold her soul to the devil.

  70. wdrane says:

Michael Savage has the ethics of an earthworm. Or lower. At the same time, any group which names itself “The Dead Kennedy’s” has no credibility to speak on this issue.

    Have some integrity, people.

  71. ralph the wonder llama says:

    johnsom Says:

there is more intellect, more brain power, in Savage’s little finger, than there is in a 100 of the typical posters on this kind of site.

Oh, my mistake. I didn’t realize you were a parody troll. Nice work.

  72. katy says:

    lol, ralph…

One of the first things you learned was: We’re not here to correct spelling, punctuation, and typographical errors.

… another step in the downfall of civilization…

    just saying’…

  73. katy says:

savage IS the enemy, as is limpballs, hannity, oLIElly et.al.

enemies of this once grand experiment of a democratic republic…

brainwashed greedy selfish self-righteous sanctimonious boobs
    are their enablers… traitors all…

  74. katy says:

    point taken…

    but you’re missing mine…

I guess I’ve just been abusive to the wrong people “democrats”. Abuse mistreat: treat badly. That’s sums up how TP treats Christians.

At least TP doesn’t feed you to the lions …………..

    Priceless. ;)

    _____

Mikey Weiner has problems. Though he used to hang out with Ginsberg & Ferlinghetti, it seems that, unlike Ginsberg & Ferlinghetti, Mikey Weiner cannot get laid anymore in his old age. Not even with your d!ck.

A sour, sour, sad old man.

  77. jonny says:

Mikey Weiner wrote Ginsberg mash notes about Ginsberg’s rectal cavity. As promiscuous as Ginsberg was, even he wouldn’t touch Mikey with a 10-foot pole.

Poor Mikey. Bitter, botter old man.

  78. jonny says:

Mikey Weiner hates illegals. There is a reason, of course.

No amount of money will entice a SF illegal street hustler to go home with Mikey. They’ve been warned about Mikey.

  79. jonny says:

    90. johnsom Says:

jonny, why you’re a real cosmopolitan.
    _____

SF is a big city on a small piece of land. It’s more like a small town than most small towns.

What, ya think nobody knows Mikey? Haw. No, really. Haw.

  80. jonny says:

Most folks in SF tune in to Mikey Weiner occasionally. Just to hear the mouth-breathers in GomerTown call in to the old queen.

    It’s an in-joke.

  81. dbadass says:

  82. williams411 says:

Michael Savage is a complete nutjob…plain and simple. Anyone who is a fan of his and believes a word of what he says is also a complete wacko.

  83. Perry logan says:

He just needs a good man.

  84. theswan says:

Everything is game to the neocons, except equal time and fair and decent dialog. Rules were made to temper deranged people from the general population. It’s time to bring some of the rules back or put them on the sidelines.

    johnsom Says:
Speaking in parables never got anybody anywhere. Not even JC himself.

I see this one doesn’t claim to be a Christian. The only thing that’s surprising is that he doesn’t pretend, like most do.

  86. blue state bob says:

Anyone who also defends Savage and admits to listening to this racist piece of sh!t proves that they too are racist pieces of sh!t.

    Just sayin’

  87. Alejandro says:

Anyone who believes that Savage really thinks the things he says on his radio show is totally gullible. Anyone who agrees with what he says is really really, like, dumb, and stuff.

    Just sayin’

  88. upside99 says:

It will be interesting to see if Weiner boy will fall off the cliff like Coulter-geist seems to have. Even mouth breathers are getting tired of this kind of WWF “entertainment”.

  89. Leftside Annie says:

Savage Wiener’s listeners are the same kind of people who think that stomping newborn puppies is good clean fun.

  90. Bozo The Neoclown says:

I have been a fan of the Dead Kennedys since I was a teenager…way back when. They produced punk with a message to be socially conscious. Ironically, Weinertwat WOULD bastardize the lyrics. Hopefully, if Jello Biafra doesn’t receive a royalty check from Weinertwat, he should haul his ass into court over it.

Liberals are as free to own radio stations as are conservatives. Hopefully your idea of decent dialogue is somewhat above what is found on this site.

  92. Musk says:

Remember that cockroach on the radio in Rwanda inciting Tutsi to kill Hutu by hacking them to death? Why do I get the feeling that Savage has a statue of him [a shrine] in his living room?
