Today on Fox News, the former New York bureau chief of the Washington Times, Liz Trotta, discussed Sen. Hillary Clinton’s (D-NY) recent remarks about Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination. After mistakenly calling Obama “Osama,” Trotta joked that it would be nice to see them both killed:
TROTTA: And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that sombody knock off Osama — Obama. Well, both, if we could.
HOST: Talk about how you really feel.
Watch it:
(HT: The Zoo)
I am so sorry about what happened yesterday. In a lame attempt at humor I really just fell all over myself in making it appear that I wished Barack Obama harm or any other candidate for that matter. I sincerely regret it and apologize to anybody I've offended. It's a very colorful political season and many of us are making mistakes and saying things we wish we hadn't said.
Isn’t it illegal to even joke about that regarding a Presdential Candidate - even for Fox ?
May 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pmWhat’s illegal anymore? Rush calling for riots at a national convention? Messing with elections? Caging?
IOKIYAR.
That says it all.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:21 pmThere is too much of this on Fox.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:24 pmhttp://ccoaler.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ germany-leftparty-lafontaine-retaliates.html
The economical upswing doesn’t reach everybody. we want an upswing for many, otherwise it’s no upswing, Lafontaine stressed. Lafontaine demanded renewdly a withdrawal of German armed forces from Afghanistan.’ We stay our course: “War is no means of German policy, from German territory no war may be started again.”‘
The delegates cheered this remark.
Landslide in Schleswig-Holstein
German conservatives suffewr massive vote losses in German state of Schleswig Holstein.
They stalled from 50,8% to 38,6%. Especially in metropolitan areas the party of Carstensen lost in the 2-digit value zone. The social dems had losses too. The leftparty had ghains of about 7%.
The grand coalition of social dems and christ dems attacked each other in the course of the evening.
In the two largest towns of the state the losses of the conservatives may be described with abrupt-abortive defeat.
the social dems dropped from 29,3 to 26,6.
the leftparty reached 7 %.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:24 pmHistorically, the vast majority of political assassinations in the US have been Democrats or those who would allow more citizens to participate. The Nazi Party is alive and well and funded by Rupert Murdoch and enabled by Roger Ailes. There are a lot of nutjobs in this country who would gladly kill a black man or a Democrat. This should be prosecuted as inciting violence, along with Rushbo.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:30 pmSick, sick people. Anyone who jokes about assassination is a violent, anti-Christian, anti-American, creepy pathetic loser. Pure & simple. You joke about killing = you are an obnoxious loser, hateful, bigoted, and pathetic. Just go away & die. The rest of us promote life, liberty, & love of our country. You promote hatred & divisiveness. Such losers.

I had to play it again because I couldn’t believe she freakin’ said that the first time through.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:37 pmThat sounds like advocating assassination of a political rival to me.
I believe that is illegal.
Would that we only still carried out public “stonings”.

You can use the League of Women Voters media contact page to get the word out.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:46 pmThanks Hillary! Thanks for getting this Obama assassination meme going. Proud of yourself?
This cretin needs to be fired and probably needs a little harassing by the secret service.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:47 pmThank you Thinkprogress for posting this. A prime example to why there needs to be change in this country and in journalism. Trotta just downright made threats to both Democratic candidates. If any talking head made a joking threat to Teflon John like Trotta, the news media would salvate all over this. And McCain would ask for an investigation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the media doesn’t make this headlines.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:48 pmPlease sign the petition to demand from FOX to fire Liz Trotta.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:48 pmFirst Senator Clinton’s stupid remarks, then Ms. Trotta’s worse remarks. This cannot be happening in our U.S.A.
What can we, the people, do to stop this nightmare?
May 25th, 2008 at 7:51 pmI am so tired of this type of thing. She’ll apologize, and the whole thing will go away. That’s simply not good enough. Obviously, Trotta felt comfortable enough in the Fox environment to say such a thing. This shit is NOT OK. It’s dangerous, and it must stop.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:52 pmWhat a stoopid C*nt. And her little laugh at the end was un f’ing believable.
If Murdoch’s GOP mouthpiece (Faux NoNooz) survives this one unscathed, there really is no justice in this world.

Wayne. This lady is ignorant. And it’s an understatement to say her comment her comment was repugnant.
But, many here should avoid hypocrisy on this issue. I’m not saying there is anyone on this thread that fits the bill, but you know, there has been plenty of calls for violence against republicans (in particular President Bush) from many posters here at TP on previous threads.. And those particular threats make Ms. Trotta’s look tame by comparasion.

And I hope these FoxAsses are arrested on the air for these types of statements.
And those who allow them on the air should be arrested as well. This is NOT a free speech issue, this is a HATE speech threat.

May 25th, 2008 at 8:25 pmKaty,

But, many here should avoid hypocrisy on this issue.

Hillary’s Latest Delusion: It’s Obama’s Fault
May 25th, 2008 at 8:39 pmHouston Chronicle - 1 hour ago
Delusion reigns supreme in the Clinton camp these days. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any stranger, Terry McAuliffe appeared today on Fox News Sunday and blamed the Obama campaign for Hillary’s remarks about Bobby Kennedy.
Clinton Camp Stokes RFK Flap by Blaming Obama Washington Post
Clinton: RFK assassination reference unrelated to Obama CNN
New York Times - Reuters - Los Angeles Times - Huffington Post
Defenders of Clinton have NO standing to say a DAMN thing about what the Fox lady did. Clinton and her defenders MAINSTREAMED talk of killing Obama.
May 25th, 2008 at 8:42 pmZooey. You know that most here don’t do it, but it obviously happens. If we want Fox to drop people like Trotta, we ought to spend a little effort policing similar sentiment here at TP. I’ve got no interest to curtail the free speech, but it would probably make the claims of Fox insensitivity more legitimate here.
But, you know I think you’re cool.

May 25th, 2008 at 9:26 pmI would like to say that the “swiftboating” has begun. However current usage of the term makes that usage incorrect.
What I see is the concerted effort on the part of the neocons to destroy Obama’s character and his humanity, and in this case his life. The Pastor Wright, muslim accusations etc. must be put into that category. In my view they are not individual or isolated incidents. This meme, started, as have some of the other attacks, by the Clinton campaign, are now being continued by the enablers of the Bush/McBush presidential effort. There is no low these people will not grope for in order to grasp or retain power.
No, this is not simply ordinary politics. And these remarks are no accident, spoken in error, that one might apologize for. For any of these offensive pundits like Hannity, O’Liely, Malkin or Trotta to apologize would be tantamount to some one in the Mafia apologizing for burning down your store.
Sadly, these memes will continue, and will escalate, until November and we better be prepared for them. Obama’s back needs to be covered!
We have our work cut out for us.

Lets revel in the end of 28 years of neocon/conservative rule! As Georgia10 says: ROAR!

My pleasure to share, Zooey the Fair. which is the great value I gain from TP and the Zoo. We all need to grow together! There is much to learn, and do, during the critical run up to November.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:06 pmIn her recently published memoirs, Fighting for Air (New York: Simon & Schuster), Trotta recounts her adventures in the rice paddies of Vietnam and the halls of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. David Ehrlich recently interviewed Trotta in New York City.
THE WORLD & I: You’ve been out of network television for nearly six years. How would you assess its present condition?
Liz Trotta: Not very favorably, I’m afraid. Network television is going the way network radio went a generation ago–it’s deteriorating into silly little talk shows, atrocious tabloid shows masquerading as journalism, and news that remains in the public’s mind only long enough to be dislodged by the next sound bite.
Lizzie, old girl, you have sunk so low that — to paraphrase Pogo — “you have met the enemy and it is you”.
May 25th, 2008 at 11:15 pmYou are so right, Merlin the Wise. In the run up to November, we will either come together and be a stronger nation for all, or we will fragment, and everyone will suffer. I know we’ll be working for the former. :-)

May 25th, 2008 at 11:26 pmHow quickly the assassination comments by Mike Huckabee (a leading contender for the McCain’s running mate)seem to have been forgotten. And remember, his comments predated Hillary’s by a full week.
For those who have forgotten:
May 16, 2008 — Mike Huckabee at the NRA Convention in Louisville on May 16, 2008 — “That was Barack Obama,” Huckabee quipped, “He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak. Somebody aimed a gun at him and he…he dove for the floor.”
It would seem that everyone posting so far has forgotten the preceding, proof positive that the neocon-dominated mainstream news media’s propaganda campaign has snowed even those who describe themselves as progressives.
Have most in this country fitted themselves with rings in their noses, only to docilely follow wherever the media cabal might want to take them?
The propaganda machine seems to be working exceedingly well, and with some further but minimal fine-tuning, should easily ensure that McCorpse will be moving into the White House next January.

I have not forgotten, however somehow my sense of timing was wrong. In my old age time is a bit more of a problem than it used to be. Thanks for straightening that out for me.
That said, it should be noted that as horrendous as this meme is, it is worse coming from a Democrat on a Democrat than the opposition and its enablers. That fact will turn the spotlight away from the Shuck to shine on Hillary.
This is an historic time! Not because of the Black man or woman as President. Rather, it is because it is an ideological battle for the soul of the party. This election will determine the direction the Democratic Party will pursue in the next generation or two. This is paramount. Hillary represents the old failed top down DLC ideology, while Barack stands for the new direction of bottom up, people driven, governance. It is not about experience vs inexperience. It is not about process. Rather it about soul.

How do you feel about supporting a president who murders living, breathing children with bombs and bullets based on lies?
> Sorry about that, bud. But honestly, I would never expect >you to hold yourself to a higher standard than the minimum >required by law.
Hahahahaha. Ahhhhh. This is funny coming from someone who supports the republican culture of corruption. Point being, there is no way to reasonably regulate what every kook on the internet says, nor should there be. Comparing the duties of a website to those of a “news” channel is legally, ethically, and logistically foolish. Notice I used “news” in quotes because Fox is, to the best of my knowledge, the only american “news” channel to ever assert it has a constitutional right to lie to its viewers. Personally, I think it should be a violation of Deceptive Trade Practices related acts to call yourself “news” if your going to lie, but hey, what do I know..

Right, then what is your point? That somehow, because some random left wing kook on the internet spouts something about offing Heir Buzch, that somehow makes it ok for Fox Noise to run a 30 hour special on “the best way to shoot a nergro”? Somehow we have to ask the entire internet to play nice before we can complain about koooks like this on FOx?
Again, “news” stations are wholly different entities than random people posting on the internet, and trying to compare or somehow link thier behaviours or duties is the height of idiocy..

May 26th, 2008 at 12:06 amRe: Katy’s post #107 –
This writer certainly saw no reference to Obama speaking at the NRA Convention, and most surely, if he had, that would have been a headline news story in and of itself.
Huckleberry’s comment could most charitably be construed as an attempt at humor. Whether it qualified as such would depend upon where the listener might fall along the ideological continuum.
For a point of reference, James Hagee, Rod Parsley, Pat Robertson, Michael Savage, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and their counterparts are probably still rolling around on the floor, doubled over with hysterical laughter.
May 26th, 2008 at 12:07 amoh, also, another question.. fertility clinics, whose only goal is to help couples have a child who want one, throw away THOUSANDS of ununsed embryos every day. do you consider them the equivalent of concentration camps? yes or no?

Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t support the war and never believed the cause was worth the life of one American soldier.
May 26th, 2008 at 12:18 amAgain you talk about “comparing the duties of a website to those of a news channel.” I’m talking about the responsibility of individuals. To post here for years and never say a word about those advocating violence against people you oppose, yet pretend to be so indignant in this case is just the least little bit hypocritical. As for the idea that some kook could be set off by the comment, there are a few lib posters here who seem to have a precarious hold on reality. But I guess it’s ok since they would probably kill someone you opppose.
Re: Merlin’s comment #113 –
Excellent point. It would seem that Franklin D. Roosevelt applied a similar definition to fascism:
“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it comes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group.”
Ask yourself, have the legislative and executive branches been representing the people of this country or rather, their corporate benefactors?
May 26th, 2008 at 12:20 am>Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t support the war and >never believed the cause was worth the life of one American >soldier.

>yet pretend to be so indignant in this case is just the >least little bit hypocritical.
no, its not. i dont give a flying f$$k what every random nutballs on the internets say, whether they are right wing or left wing. i dont have time to worry about such triviliaties.
simply because the act is the same, the medium by which the act is transmitted and legitimized is VERY different.
point is simple. what tv broadcasts can have an enormous effect on the world. what random people post does NOT . its like comparing hitting someone with a water balllon to hitting them with a heavy rock, because the act of throwing something at them is common to both acts. im not going to waste my time complaining abotu people throwing water ballons

If the lives of American soldiers had never been placed in danger there, the only dead Iraqis would have been the ones that Saddam and his clan would have tortured, raped and killed.

May 26th, 2008 at 2:38 amWTF are you talking about, rhf? The only person who has turned from a (supposed) Progressive into a Republican is Senator Clinton. This line of yours should be spoken to Hillary, NOT Zooey: “You know you were OK when you were just FLIPPING OF(sic) STUPID REPUBLICANS, but when you BECAME ONE OF THEM, you lost ALL OF YOUR CHARM you BITTER OLD B**CH!”
May 26th, 2008 at 2:47 amHillary is running a bipolar candidacy; one minute she appears to have her campaign together and the next minute she’s back at square one and running right into the arms of those that tried to destroy her and her family 10 years back. The mere notion that she’s still in this until something “unexpected” happens sure got a lot clearer with her RFK remark. Because if there isn’t some unknown skeleton that can deep-six Obama between now and the convention, Hillary…if she were to take the nomination…sure would look like the newest addition to the GOP lineage in-terms of hijacking the electoral process. She can see the handwriting that is on the wall, but accepting it as fact is completely another matter for a Senator who still hasn’t said she was wrong on her vote to approve the Iraq war.

The Regressives keep moving backwards. Once Ghandi was asked what he thought of Western Civilization, to which he replied “I think it’s a good idea.” So do I.
So the oxyMORONS are showcased daily, for the entire world to see on the FOX Noise Channel. [oxyMORONS, the “moral majority” like “Jumbo Shrimp” or “Military Intelligence.”] It’s sad they have ANY viewers – Ghandi was right.
I hope one of our brilliant lawyers is looking for a way to indict this poor excuse for a human being for her Freudian Slip. I would not be surprised to find the majority of FOX employees call Obama “Osama” as a rule – it helps when catapulting the propaganda.
