Tonight, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will hold a private fundraiser in Phoenix with President Bush, an event McCain has desperately tried to hide from the public. CNN’s Ed Henry reports that the White House has scheduled another event during the trip to Arizona, resulting in American taxpayers paying for Bush to raise money for McCain:
BLITZER: Ed, who pays when the President goes to a fundraiser like this for John McCain? The McCain campaign or the American taxpayer?
HENRY: They both pay, Wolf. The bottom line is the President is trying to mix in a little official business today. He’s going to speak at cable company…short remarks. That justifies for the White House charging the taxpayers for some of this trip, and the McCain camp picks up the rest, Wolf.
Watch it:
So? Bush spends our tax dollars for whatever he wants. He gives it to whomever he chooses. The US Treasury is his own personal ATM machine. We give and he takes. Period.
Just another day. Less taxes for the rich, more from us, so he can turn around and give them to the rich.
Christ on a crutch. How depressing.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pmThe GOP’s biggest challenge will be to convince the voting public that the GOP-Iraq failure is really a success–despite the obvious and overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pmWell, to be fair, the American public will be paying for the entire Bush Presidency for the next hundred years or so.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:09 pmOnce Bush is out of office, he’s going to be one lonely guy – nobody will want to touch him with a ten-foot pole.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pmGWB has just got to take it to the limit. We know Iran is down the road.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:15 pmWe know Iran is down the road.
Iran is down the dead end road we don’t need to take.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm“Taxpayers pay for Bush to attend McCain fundraiser.”
Yup, your tax dollars are working under McBush.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:20 pmThey will divide the bill right down the middle just as my ex did during the divorce. She took all the assets and i got all the liabilities. The McSame campaign gets the bush and the taxpayers get the shaft. When King George the Dumb gets to Leavenworth I hape they send the bill for his keep to his Momma. Do you suppose she would agree to a retroactive abortion?
May 27th, 2008 at 7:21 pmLook, I hate our tax money being wasted as much as the next guy. But let’s not fool ourselves. If in four or eight years President Obama, or President Clinton, goes and campaigns for our party’s nominee will we write blogs post titled Taxpayers pay for Obama/Clinton to attended X’s fundraiser. Let’s keep these posts about the issues, not campaign event. That is unless we start applying the same standard to ourselves.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:27 pmIOKIYAR – the unethical behavior of the Bush Mafia knows no bounds, he has gotten away with sooooo many crimes and the poodle congress have given him a free pass to do anything he wants, why would he not do this, the repukes love war and Iraq gives them a “hundred years” of war profiting.
Yo, Bush, McSame, you suck.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:28 pmInstead of having the “football” carried around behind KGtD by a Secret Service Savant we should handcuff the damn thing to his scrotum on one end and to any nuke headed to Iran on the other. Maybe the dumb SOB will finally get the message. On second thought, “Push the Itty bitty button Georgie.”
May 27th, 2008 at 7:29 pmHey Pelosi, ya know that thing you took off the table … let’s be gettin’ it back on the table. IMPEACH this rat-bastard.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:33 pmSo, they’re violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the law. Were the remarks that justify us taxpayers paying for Bush’s trip scheduled before he agreed to speak at McCain’s fundraiser (okay) or after (not okay)?
May 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pmThe useless drivel and endless tripe on this blog is amazing. Not issue oriented other the “hate Bush” issue. The venow some spew may help them vent but it does nothing to improve their condition or that of anyone else. How about accepting some personal responsibility and quit waiting on the government or some politician to improve your life. It ain’t gonna happen. Four presidents from now you’ll still be complaining.

That’s a classic, Joe. Thanks.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pmI don’t mind paying for this as long as Bush slams down some liquor on our dime at the get together, and falls off the wagon in public with cameras around.
It would be worth the cost to see him stumbling and incoherent, speaking monkey gibberish.
And drunk on top of that!

He’s gonna make a few short statements at a Cable Company ? What purpose is served by that ?
And assuming this is a telecommunications type cable company, wouldn’t they have some sort of equipment to beam an image from location to another ?

Stupid and irrelevant comments aside, you believe that, yes, there is nothing we can do about it so shut up. I will not shut up for you or any other sycophant who still believes we should bow down to the leader. This is my country. Have you written hundreds of letters to your representatives in congress? Have you told you friends that things just aren’t going well in the country and maybe we should question the “leadership”?
I didn’t think so. Ask yourself if you can do more. Otherwise, go away.
May 27th, 2008 at 8:40 pmMapleStreet – exactly.
He burns thousands of gallons of fuel, tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars, to do something he could do over the phone.
Pure waste. Something a 5 year old wouldn’t do – and where is the outrage? Oh, thats right, the news networks are owned by corporations, and we all know they’re in charge now.

Haven’t you been paying attention? He’s been stumbling and incoherent, speaking monkey gibberish, for the last 62 years. Give or take the 10 years it took him to learn to walk and talk in the first place.

May 27th, 2008 at 10:06 pmCan I have my money back?
May 27th, 2008 at 10:32 pmI’m back! Hey, lighten up guys. Invective and potty mouth won’t make you any friends. I do recognize truth–I think. And for the suggestion to write hundreds of letters to my representative–I haven’t. They don’t read those things. Have called a few times though. And paid tens of thousands in tax dollars (last year) which they have wasted. By the way, I work for an evil corporation, most people do. Take all the corporations away and who you gonna tax? Without taxes what can government do?
Yep, I have told a lot of people we should question our leadership. We have a Congress with veto override power but no brains. If Congress has veto override power and the ability to use it, who should we blame, Bush or Congress? Talk about waste. The farm bill has enough pork in it to choke a fat politician. So don’t worry about what the President wastes in a day–if you call it waste. As far as I’m concerned presidents can do what they want: Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, (that is as far back as I can remember)…. None of them were paid what they were worth to take the domestic abuse and international pressure of the office. Reagan was criticized after leaving office for going to Japan and receiving big bucks as a speaker (what was it? $50,000 or was it a $1 million?). Now Bill and Hillary are chastized for making millions since leaving office. Why? Obama, if he is elected will probably make even more millions. They deserve it.
Glad to join the discussion. Independent. Not right wing or libertarian. Just truthful.
May 27th, 2008 at 11:04 pmLet’s see, at 5 gallons per mile, 1,200 miles each way at $6 per gallon of Jet-A, Bush’s adventure cost the taxpayers $12,000 for the fuel to fly it round trip from DC to AZ and sometimes the engines idle when on the ground; when he flies to Iraq, definitely. The 2 pilots and navigator are Air Force, so they don’t get paid the same as commercial pilots, but it adds up. The cost to the taxpayers of the fund raising trip would be around $20K, by my estimation.
May 28th, 2008 at 12:45 amCan we send the bill to the Party? Maybe to Cindy. She’s got about $100Mil.

May 28th, 2008 at 7:40 amA “Military Aide” carries the “Football,” not a Secret Service Savant, as you stated!
Read the following definition of a:
Savant n.
1. a learned person,scholar
2. usually a elderly person. noted for wisdom, knowledge,& judgment
So how does a non-existent Secret Service Savant, carry the “Football?”
As much as I love and respect this website, I believe that ThinkProgress may have gotten an important part of this story wrong. But it ain’t your fault, because the media isn’t telling the whole story here. Who else was slated to show up at that gig? McCain’s mobbed-up political backers from his early days would certainly want to shake hands with GeeDubya for promoting their boy, wouldn’t they?
The car bombing of Don Bolles by “well-connected” Arizona Republican backers may explain why the media goes so easy on John McCain. It sure ain’t because of his sweet, even temperament or his barbecue.

May 28th, 2008 at 8:59 amIt takes cohones for a Bush to show up at a company named Silverado. That means McCain will be looking for Lincoln quotes bandy about.
