Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir that the Iraq war was sold to the public with a “political propaganda campaign” led by President Bush, aimed at “manipulating sources of public opinion” and “downplaying the major reason for going to war.” McClellan said Vice President Cheney was “the magic man” who steered policy while leaving no fingerprints.
“Pentagon figures show 40,000 U.S. troops have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder since 2003.” The number diagnosed “jumped nearly 50 percent in 2007 over the previous year, as more of them served lengthy and repeated combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“The New York-based Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index declined for a fifth-consecutive month, to 57.2 from 62.8 in April,” the “lowest reading since October 1992.”
In an assessment obtained by the Project on Government Oversight, the Pentagon inspector general (IG) estimates that “nearly half of the military’s $316 billion weapons budget went unchecked last year because the IG’s office lacked the manpower.” Auditors are having “trouble keeping pace with the ever-expanding defense budget and combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“Iraq’s largest Sunni Arab political bloc has suspended talks on ending its boycott of the Shiite-led government due to a dispute over which positions it would assume, the head of the bloc said Wednesday.” The three-party bloc “pulled its members out of the 39-member Cabinet in August, saying they were not getting enough say in decision-making.”
“The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that employees are protected from retaliation when they complain about discrimination in the workplace, adopting a broad interpretation of workers’ rights under two federal civil rights laws.” The decisions are “evidence of a new tone and direction from the court this year,” the New York Times notes.
“At least three Iraqis appeared yesterday before a federal grand jury hearing evidence in the September shootings in Baghdad by Blackwater Worldwide security guards that left 17 Iraqis dead. … The grand jury has also heard testimony from Blackwater personnel and U.S. officials.”
ExxonMobil has “admitted that its support for” climate change denier groups “may have hindered action to tackle global warming,” and it the company announced it will cut funds to many of these groups. The move comes as shareholders, meeting in Dallas today, are expected to “urge ExxonMobil to take the problem of climate change more seriously.”
Ali Larijani, a prominent conservative and a “powerful rival” to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, “became speaker of Iran’s parliament today, clearing the way for a potential challenge against the hard-line head of state ahead of 2009 presidential elections.”
And finally: Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has close ties to Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Weiner is dating Huma Abedin, Clinton’s “body woman” and “ glam body gal.” “I’m doing a lot [for the campaign], but it’s largely because I’m dating Huma,” he admitted. “It’s not a great environment to forge a relationship.”
Hidden Nuclear Handout Seen in Climate Bill
Major environmental groups are up in arms against attempts in the U.S. Senate to pass a bill that they believe includes a thinly-veiled attempt to promote the interests of the nuclear industry under the guise of climate protection. “This is a covert attempt to bolster a failing nuclear power industry in the name of addressing climate change,” said Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth, an environmental group opposed to the use of nuclear energy.
The climate change bill, sponsored by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Sen. John Warner (R-VA), is likely to be discussed by the Senate in the next few weeks. In a statement, Blackwelder and leaders of five other environmental organizations and public interest groups described the Lieberman-Warner bill as “the biggest federal handout in the history of the nuclear industry over the past 50 years.”
They fear that, if approved, the bill would cost billions of dollars to U.S. taxpayers in subsidies for the nuclear industry. “The bill contains nearly half a trillion dollars that can be accessed by the nuclear energy industry under a vaguely entitled category for ‘zero and low carbon energy technologies,’” according to FoE.
“It’s significant that the authors of the bill tried to conceal the nuclear funding under ambiguous language,” said Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen, a Washington, DC-based advocacy group. “Why are they hiding? Because the environmental movement in this country is serious about addressing climate change and will not tolerate a reversion to dangerous, dirty, and expensive nuclear energy.”

That money would be much better spent developing better wind and solar power as an alternative. See the reason that isn’t happening is because no one has proprietorship. over it. Another big problem they are not considering is waste disposal, talk about expensive and dangerous. But you have to consider the two sponsors, as the saying goes two heads are better than one; these guys are the exception to that rule.

May 28th, 2008 at 9:11 amControversy Over County’s Plan For Military Internet Voting
A small Panhandle county that is home to one of the world’s largest air bases is embarking on a sweeping experiment in Internet voting that could transform elections in the 21st century. But the push by Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections Pat Hollarn to use the Internet to make it easier for U.S. soldiers overseas to vote is drawing fire from voting activists who call her project ”unsafe” and contrary to a new law that requires the state to use paper ballots.
Frustrated by the pace of overseas voting efforts undertaken by the Department of Defense in recent years, Hollarn has championed a plan that will let those living on, or near, three military bases in the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan cast ballots in the November election.
During a 10-day period just before Election Day, voters living abroad will be able to enter a computer kiosk and vote on an encrypted electronic ballot, which will eventually be shipped to Florida via the Internet and then counted. Poll workers will be on site to verify that the person is a registered Okaloosa County voter.

I wouldn’t trust any vote count in the State of Florida.
May 28th, 2008 at 9:14 amI always kinda got the sense that Scotty McClellan was uneasy about having to lie for the President. Maybe it was just that he wasn't very good at it (competence not being a hallmark of this administration). But now it appears that he may have had a little bit of John Dean in his character.
Good on ya, Scotty!

May 28th, 2008 at 9:17 amPlus, of course, Scotty clearly felt betrayed by Rove and Libby when they lied to him about their involvement with outing Valerie Plame and sending him out there to repeat their lies.
That probably was a factor in whatever candor (or payback) is contained in his book.
May 28th, 2008 at 9:18 amFormer White House press secretary Scott McClellan writes in a new memoir.
McClellan's memoir describes, Rove as misleading and dishonest. Those are two descriptive words, I would use to describe my teenager’s story about why she didn’t make it home til 2:00 o’clock in the morning on a Friday night. As for describing Rove, criminal architect, I think is a much better description.
May 28th, 2008 at 9:18 amI don't think McClellan deserves praise for his 6 years too late confession about Iraq War deception that will now do NOTHING to bring back those who have died in this illegal occupation of a sovereign nation.
Perhaps the only silver linings I can see right now are that we've finally been vindicated by a Republican, and that this will hurt John McCain for his support of the "war" even further.
May 28th, 2008 at 9:20 amChildren in Katrina trailers may face lifelong ailments
"It's just the sickness. I can't get rid of it. It just keeps coming back," said Bouffanie, 27, who was pregnant with her now 15-month-old daughter, Lexi, while living in the trailer. "I'm just like, `Oh God, I wish like this would stop.' If I had known it would get her sick, I wouldn't have stayed in the trailer for so long." The girl, diagnosed with severe asthma, must inhale medicine from a breathing device.
Doctors cannot conclusively link her asthma to the trailer. But they fear she is among tens of thousands of youngsters who may face lifelong health problems because the temporary housing supplied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency contained formaldehyde fumes up to five times the safe level.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3327581
High Exposure to formaldehyde chemical irritants can lead to Reactive Airway Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS), a chemically- or irritant-induced type of asthma. Children are more vulnerable to corrosive agents than adults because of the relatively smaller diameter of their airways. They knew of these risks and more, but still allowed families to occupy these FEMA trailers. Every last one of them should sue the Federal Government, for what could possibly be something these children will have for the rest of their lives due to prolonged exposure.
May 28th, 2008 at 9:21 amBush mislead the public on Iraq? I am shocked, shocked i tell you! Some revelation there Scotty. I love how he characterizes his role as being "misled." Just tell the truth Scotty, you lied for a living. The Administration's lies you parrotted and repeated have left over 4000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead. It's become quite popular now that Bush has outlived his usefulness to throw him under the bus. Too little, too late for me.

May 28th, 2008 at 9:28 amRacial Profiling on Tennessee Voter Reg Cards
The state of Tennessee places a box on its voter registration form for "RACE" -- this is marked "optional", but on some county Web sites, like Tipton County, http://tiptonco.com/dept_election.htm
they add pressure to complete every item by printing, and highlighting, the words "omitting information produces rejected application" right under the form.
That statement would not be a problem if the "race" box was not on the card, and if the felony indicator blank was correctly designed.
Here's a copy of the Tennessee voter registration card as of this posting:

So let's keep a tally, shall we?
Previous president, having been investigated time after time, finally gets "caught" having consensual oral gratification, and misleads the investigation with the definition of "sex", and the whole country was divided over the impeachment hearings.
Flash forward to the present. We have a president, obviously a puppet, misleading the country into a "war" that has led to thousands of our own men and women dead, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead, countless others permanently maimed and injured, costing us billions of dollars, all for "political propaganda", now even accused by a former press secretary, and we, as a nation, sit idly by and are complacent?

May 28th, 2008 at 9:54 amFOX News Uses Clinton’s RFK Assassination Comment To Attack Obama
Now that Hillary Clinton is almost certain not to be the Democratic nominee for president, FOX News conservatives have turned into her most stalwart supporters. Not only did they defend Clinton over her RFK assassination comments, the only thing they found offensive was the Obama camp's reaction. Townhall.com’s Amanda Carpenter accused Obama-supporters of playing the race card to avoid talking about parts of history and Redstate.com’s Erick Erickson griped that Obama is using security concerns to make himself look more important. With video.
Even though I’m an Obama supporter, and even though I found Hillary Clinton’s remark about the assassination of RFK distasteful, I resent the endless news coverage of yet another distraction from the serious issues our country faces just as much as I did the coverage of Rev. Wright and “bittergate.”

It's been interesting how typical politics has failed for the other candidates this year, while change has worked so well for Obama. Very refreshing. It will definitely allow Obama to pick up Western states as a trade off to the reality that the racists in certain Appalachian states are going to give problem a run there.
In fact, I think the election this year is going to break a lot of former benchmarks, and set expectations about what are and are not blue and red states.

Maybe Bill Richardson? He's got the Govenor experience, the Latino influence, and look at what he's done for his state - they love him there.
May 28th, 2008 at 10:10 amGiant Chicken to Visit Nancy Pelosi in Washington, DC
With the U.S. Congress unwilling to oppose the Bush Administration's request for hundreds of billions more in funding the military occupation of Iraq, one has to wonder what need there is in sending another chicken to Washington, DC. But that's just what Congressional primary challenger Shirley Golub is planning to do.
Shirley explains, "This coming Thursday, May 29 at 10AM (ET), one of my volunteers will dress up in a chicken costume and go up to the West Steps of Capitol Hill, where they will gather with video cameras on the steps of the House of Representatives. What I am hoping to accomplish with this is to demonstrate just how truly useless it is to send a chicken to Congress."

miss molly, maybe I’m too cynical, but I don’t think it’s so hopeful that Reps are speaking out about Bush.
I mean, the election is just a few months away.
And it would be better for Dems and the rest of the country if the Reps stood by Bush.

I agree that it's much better for us politically if the rats stay on the sinking ship -- many more of them sink that way.
However, as much as I would like to see the Republicans buried (or at least see the party morph into something representing conservative but honest ideals), I think Americans deserve to see the slime under the rock exposed. It's a country-over-party thing.
Scott McClellan may or may not be entirely truthful. It's possible that he still knows a great deal more than he is saying and this could be a carefully constructed story to throw his former bosses under the bus while saving his own butt and making money off it. However, his act of speaking out may embolden others who have been too fearful of reprisal from the Bushney machine. If we could have a flood of people voicing what they know, we could get closer to the truth and the machine wouldn't be able to discredit all of them.

For once I have to partially agree with the RedneckStaters. McClellan was the worst liar of all Bush's Press Secretaries. Ari Fleischer was a master liar. Tony Snow, with his extensive training at Pox News, was a professional liar. Dana Perino is too dumb to even know she is lying.
Scotty always knew he was lying, and couldn't keep the deer in the headlights look off his face.

May 28th, 2008 at 10:28 amI was talking with a friend of mine the other day and we were talking about Bush's various executive orders and directives and his ability to call martial law at any time.
I always thought it would be over the election, a false-flag 9/11 redux or some such. My friend brought up a point which I had not considered: US rioting over the price of gas.
Talk about hitting the nail on the head.
All those currently mostly empty FEMA immigration facilities just waiting for some US citizen to call home.

May 28th, 2008 at 10:31 amWow, even Fukuyama is jumping ship! In an interview yesterday:
'ELEANOR HALL: So which president do you think would be the best placed to handle these challenges? Would it be president McCain, president Obama or a president Clinton?
FRANCIS FUKUYAMA: Well, it is a little bit difficult. In my own thinking since I have to vote in this next election, I personally actually don't want to see a Republican re-elected because I have a general view of the way democratic processes should work and if your party is responsible for a big policy failure, you shouldn't be rewarded by being re-elected.'
The article describes Fukuyama like this:

Josh Brolin...George W. Bush

Ioan Gruffudd...Tony Blair
Thandie Newton...Condoleezza Rice
Richard Dreyfuss...Dick Cheney (Randy Quaid also rumored)
Scott Glenn...Donald Rumsfeld

Ellen Burstyn...Barbara Bush
James Cromwell...George Herbert Walker Bush
Rob Corddry...Ari Fleischer
Jason Ritter ... Jeb Bush (rumored)
Toby Jones ... Karl Rove

One thing that impressed me about him is his willingness to include others in the decision making process. That unlike Bush, he actually listens and considers before he makes decisions. I like consensus building in people in positions of authory - it suggests that he will have a diverse cabinet who can offer different opinions, experiences, and viewpoints - therefore truly representing all of the People.

Green Beret electrocuted in shower on Iraq base
KBR noted "several safety issues concerning the improper grounding of electrical devices." But KBR's contract did not cover "fixing potential hazards." It covered repairing items only after they broke down.
Only after Maseth died did the Army issue an emergency order for KBR to finally fix the electrical problems, and that order was carried out soon thereafter.
In an internal e-mail obtained by CNN, a Navy captain admits that the Army should have known "the extent of the severity of the electrical problems." The e-mail then says the reason the Army did not know was because KBR's inspections were never reviewed by a "qualified government employee."

Like most right-wing Neanderthals, he doesn't know how to use the intertubes. His 5 year old has to boot up the computer and find Think Progress for him so he can troll.

What do we know about Obama other than his “change” slogan? I don’t know. But yea, repeat something over and over again and it starts becoming the truth to people. What is Obama going to do about the huge debt? What is he going to do about illegal immigration? Exactly how is he going to fix the economy?? Other then pulling out of Iraq, I still don’t know this candidate and I think people are voting for him only because they don’t want McCain.

Part of this is because our news media would much rather harp on the Democratic dogfight, Obama's pastor, Obama's various "gaffes", and Obama's "electability" than about what he would actually do as President if elected (they are just as bad with the other candidates, too).
On Obama's website is a printable PDF containing his positions on most important issues, stated very clearly. Check it out: http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/ObamaBlueprintForChange.pdf
If you want to know about Obama's political background and experience, his website contains that, as well as Wikipedia. I'd also recommend checking out both of his books from your local library and reading them.
Want something on Obama that doesn't come from his website? I'm sure you know how to use Google as well as anyone else. You'll get some objective news along with a lot of politically skewed stuff. Just keep in mind when you read the hate pieces that nobody attacks Obama for anything specific on the issues -- it's all about his pastor, the occasional misstatement, and of course the old canard about whether or not he's a Muslim.
If you still know nothing about Obama and see him only as "not McCain", you're just not trying. The information is out there -- even if it's not on your network and cable news channels.

He won't read it. The RNC has determined that they cannot beat Barak Obama on the issues, so they put out a directive that their minions in the press and their rabble of sychophants in the public are to remain ignorant of his policies.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:15 pmMs_Joanne, the reaction from the msm get's worse.
check out charlie gibson especially nauseating defense of himself and his cronies in the press...

May 28th, 2008 at 1:36 pmUltra-orthodox "Shas" party burns Bibles in Tel Aviv.
The deputy mayor of Or Yehuda, Uzi Aharon, belongs to the ultra-Orthodox Shas party. When he learned about this latest missionary effort, he recruited several yeshiva students to go around the neighborhood, collect the missionary literature, and burn it. In doing so, he seems to have violated several provisions of Israeli law, notably Criminal Code Sections 170 and 172, which forbid harming "in any way a place, symbol or icon of religious importance to a community that imbues that icon with significance" and speaking "publicly in a way that is offensive to people of any religion."

Iraq violence falls to 4-year low
The U.S. military said the number of attacks in the last week dropped to a level not seen in Iraq since March 2004
The same military that claimed we were merely fighting a few deadenders, just a short time ago? I've got an Edsel that I've been trying to sell, and it runs great! Interested?
May 28th, 2008 at 2:45 pmSo exactly what experience does Obama have? What is he known for? If he does stand for all those issues listed, then what experience does he have to deal with them? Can we trust his judgment based on speech alone?
May 28th, 2008 at 2:50 pmFrom bandwagon's link:
"I had a uncle who was one of the, who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Obama said, slowly and methodically.
Now, a rational person would conclude that the most Obama was guilty of was bad diction.
1. He said "I had an uncle who was one of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz - he didn't say his uncle had actually liberated Auschitz since is was accomplished by the Russians.
2.He then said his uncle was one of the men who liberated the concentration camps. Only someone without an understanding of English could conclude that he claimed his uncle liberated Auschitz. Since bandwagon seems to think exactly that, it's clear he's just another blindly partisan conservative.

And what had Bush done before coming into office? Ran a two-bit state like Texas.
Badly.

They can't do that. They are afraid if they think for themselves, instead of following the dictums handed down from their totalitarian masters, they will become too much like us.
May 28th, 2008 at 4:39 pmanytime a dignitary such as a senator or admin official goes to Iraq, it's a dog and pony show/photo op. What they are shown is a Potemkin Village, a false facade. In no way does it really portrays the facts on the ground.
If you believe otherwise, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you-dirt cheap.
May 28th, 2008 at 4:42 pmRemember when Republican Senator Mike Pence said, "Bagdad is just like a county fair. I got 5 rugs for 5 bucks." What he didn't tell us was that the massive security required for him and Lindsey Graham to walk around a Bagdad market cost US taxpayers 5 million bucks.
Apparently, the right-wingers get taken advantage of a lot. My five year old granddaughter is not nearly as gullible as your typical Bush worshipper.
