No surprise that one McCain surrogate sets up an amazingly implausible, foolish scenario so that McCain can take tee off on Obama’s lack of military “knowledge.” Next up, another McCain surrogate sez the reason why it won’t happen is ‘cuz Obama’s “too chicken.” These folks are so predictable.

His heroism and sacrifice to our country aside, it astonishes me that McCain should be so hawkish and yet so unsympathetic to the needs of our troops (see: McCain’s insult of a crappy GI Bill). It must have to do with the difference, not to mention the distance, between fighting a war with your boots on the ground and fighting a war from a cockpit. Forty years creates a hell of a lot of distance too.

Bad ass fighter pilots are of limited use in our current conflicts. You can’t “defeat” insurgents from thousands of feet in the air. The terrain is largely either urban or mountainous. Opposing forces are usually small.

Sadly, our military is so over-extended and our force levels so severely compromised that we now have USAF and US Navy troops fighting and dying on the ground.

McCain is very naive if he really takes the expression ” facts on the ground” literally, as he seems to do when he talks about “seeing the facts on the ground.” You can’t see any “facts” when you’re on the ground. You can’t even see any “facts” when you’re in a helicopter. You need intelligence analysts to give you “facts” – preferably in sober prose, not in PowerPoint Presentations.

I really wish Obama would completely agree to do this with only one caveat.

They refuse to accept ANY security cover, and are allowed to stroll anywhere in Baghdad at all. That means Dora, Sadr City, etc.
