McClellan: Hadley admitted responsibility for false Iraq claims, said he would resign.

The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank writes today that in Scott McClellan’s new book, the former White House press secretary reveals that National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley once admitted that he was responsible for the false claims about Iraq’s WMD in President Bush’s 2003 State of the Union address:

McClellan recounts how Hadley confessed to his colleagues that he, and not CIA chief George Tenet, was to blame for Bush’s unfounded claim about Iraq’s nuclear ambitions in a State of the Union address. “I blew it,” McClellan quotes Hadley as saying. “I think the only solution is for me to resign.”

Hadley didn’t quit, and Tenet’s name was never fully cleared. Still, McClellan identified Hadley as an “honorable” and “selfless” man.

Is McClellan the ironic type? Never thought of him that way, but after this book, maybe? Scottie perhaps calling Hadley "honorable" in the same sense that Marc Antony called Brutus "an honorable man" in WS'Julius Caesar. One of Brando's best performances in that movie- he garbles the word "honorable" so badly that the message of rank dishonor comes through loud & clear.

Hadley is "horible" and "selfless"? It takes one to know one but thanks for being frank. Even if it is a little too late.

OOPS 2 Rs in horrible hehe

  4. CitiDC Says:

Scott McClellan will be on C-SPAN's Washington Journal Call in Program on Friday, May 30 at 7:30 a.m. (ET).

Be sure to call in and ask Scott a question abot who let Jeff Gannon into the White House.

Since I don't think he covered that in his book.

  5. Zimzone Says:

Hadley is one of those constipated looking Wingnuts like Rumsfeld.
It appears that just thinking gives them pain somewhere.

Print out some more subpoenas, folks, this circus is just getting started!

  6. upside99 Says:

Me thinks that Scotty and Georgie Boy Tenet are the first in a long line of "outings" that will come over the next few years as those inside the BushCo shitstorm finally decide to grow a pair (and make some money along the way), start to spew.

This defines Snotty. He has not switched sides!!

    Don't fall for it!

This Scottie business is pretty neat. It has caused the mighty Wurlitzer to be turned up full blast. The bushies don't know whether to shit or go blind, probably try to both before it is all over.

  9. Tawdry Says:

And the smear has begun. They're "puzzled" by Scottie, he's not "the Scottie they knew", suggesting that perhaps Scottie is not mentally well. He told the truth and that's something this administration does not admire. Ari Fleischer said that McClellan was inept at his job. So, who put him there? The most inept president ever.

  10. And Yet... Says:

Think I will call in, CiTiDC @ 4- have called before, quite a while ago. Might ask McClellan about this quote from Gannon:

"Add me to the growing list of those who are having great difficulty understanding McClellan’s motives. I spent two years as a White House reporter, much of it during McClellan’s reign. At no time did Scott ever indicate, either publicly or privately, he had the misgivings he expressed in this book.

What I hear about the book does not sound like the Scott McClellan I knew for two years. I can say without fear of contradiction, that I knew Scott better than any other White House correspondent or Washington reporter."

Gee, Scottie, think that last bit might be a little hint for you to shut the hell up?

  11. upside99 Says:

    Zooey,

I was thinking the same thing but for different reasons: What if this was a rover idea to sell a ton of books to help feed the empty Repug campaign coffers or start building the large defense fund that will be needed for the BushCo Boyz (and Girlz) over the next few years.

  12. McWars Says:

Hadley's a TRAITOR to the American people for going back on his word to reliquish his collection of our taxpayer dollars!

  13. freeman Says:

Put scotty under oath and try the bush machine for treason !The war crimes trials can wait till next year !

  14. BrianFL Says:

So Stephen Hadley was responsible for the bogus enriched uranium claim? He admitted he was wrong, and said he should quit.

The White House response was to not only reject his resignation, but they then REWARDED him by making him National Security Advisor. That tells you all you need to know about the Bush administration. They were HAPPY that propaganda came out. They REWARDED the guy who came up with it.

I bet you they knew while they were reading Joe Wilson's op-ed about the uranium claim being bogus, but STILL chose to out his wife as a CIA operative in the media as payback for Wilson telling the truth.

  15. freeman Says:

IMPEACHMENT is the constitutional remedy for treasonous presidencies .Someone please send Nancy Pelosi a copy of Scotty's book then impound the proceeds he recieves on behalf of the dead and wounded !

  16. freeman Says:

    Impeachment now !

Is Spanky schizo? He can't have it both ways with his disgruntlement. bu$hCo either did what they did or they're honorable and selfless. Which is it, sweaty little piglet, which is it?

  18. Rufus J Squirrel Says:

How is this news? This has been common knowledge for years. Well - maybe not "common" - but it's been known for years.

  19. freeman Says:

The reason this is news Squirrel is that even a republican congressman will have trouble denying the integrity of an investigation into grounds for impeachment ! This guy is the ULTIMATE insider and presented the case for war and the administrations position on the Plame affair on a daily basis to the American public !

  20. freeman Says:

Note to my ethically challenged congressman Doc "see no evil" Hastings ,
To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt

  21. Evil Spaniard Says:

Congratulations to this "honorable" and "selfless" man. He's one of the corner stones of a genocide. And remorse does nothing to repair it.

  22. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

If this particular instance is what Scott uses to claim Hadley is an"honorable and selfless man," I would say admitting error to your own group of insiders, but never going public with that responsibility and allowing someone else to get smeared for it (Tenet) is hardly honorable or selfless in MY book. That sets a very low bar!!

  23. republicanSScareme Says:

Just a little mistake, that's all.
