Getting soldiers killed and wounded doesn’t hurt the troops or their families. Killing thousands upon thousands of Iraqis doesn’t cause any upset. But saying maybe the war’s not vitally necessary, THAT hurts the troops.

These cowards spit venom and bile and then hide behind volunteer soldiers rather than defend their own cause. They are scum.

The real harm has been done by the destructive demagogues who deceived us, dragged us into an immoral “preemptive” war for political and personal gain, and who broke law after law and perverted the course of justice in America. McClellan is not without blame, himself, but Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Rice, and, in the end, even Colin Powell, must bear the heavy burden which they have inflicted on the American people and especially on those who serve in our armed forces and their families!

I’ve been following the ‘Yearning for Zion’ case in the US papers, and I noticed a nice example of sentimentalisation and subjectivisation as the closing paragraph of the current NYT story on it – i.e. the paragraph that leaves the final impression in the reader’s mind:

“One member of the church, Willie Jessop, a contractor and rancher in Utah who came to Texas after his sister’s children were taken into custody, said hope and anxiety were both running high among the families in about equal measure. “The parents have been on this roller coaster ride now for so long,” Mr. Jessop said. “They’ve been told so many times that they could get their children back: if they go to the shelters they could get their children back, if they submit DNA they could get their children back. There have been so many conditions already, and still they do not have their children back.””

I provided direct support to our troops for over 35 years, first as an active duty soldier, later as a civilian employee of DoD, mostly overseas, providing library and educational support to active duty troops and their families. When I see one of those silly yellow ribbon decals on an SUV I want to grab the driver by the throat and ask him or her to tell me just exactly what they do to “Support Our Troops.”

Just like the neo-cons they’re usually all talk and no meaningful action. It’s just feel-good BS to take their minds off the fact that they’ve asked other people to die for something they say they believe in but are unwilling to die for themselves. They’re below disgusting.

It will be interesting to see in November just who “the troops” think is hurting them most. So far, I hear a lot of concern that McCain just doesn’t get it coming from the ranks.

October surprise? I would put nothing past these conservative vermin.

Sentimentalisation and subjectivisation can be used to decontextualise any political issue – leftists can use the same tactics if they are equally unscrupulous, at least in theory. However, if you have rival viewpoints each sentimentalising and subjectivising an issue, then the viewpoint with the most outlets wins.

Incidentally, “terror” and “terrorism” are already subjectivisations. The “war against terror” is a war against a subjective emotional state, and even thinking about it, let alone making war on it, makes the “terror” worse, this being the nature of emotions.
