Bowing to a court order, the White House released a long-delayed report yesterday on the “mainly harmful, impact of human-caused global warming in the United States.” According to new projections in the report, “the poor, elderly and communities with lagging public-health and public-works systems will face outsize health risks from warming.”
The U.S. military suspended a Marine yesterday “for distributing coins quoting the Gospel to Sunni Muslims” in Fallujah. The incident has “enraged Iraqis who view it as the latest example of American disrespect for Islam.” Residents of the Iraqi city perceived the effort as “a ‘humiliating‘ attempt to convert them to Christianity.”
The Los Angeles Times writes that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “is taking a serious drubbing on YouTube. … Six of the top 10 videos returned by a ‘John McCain’ YouTube search Thursday pegged the 71-year-old as inconsistent, extreme, wooden or a combination of the three.” View some of these videos by Brave New Films here.
Yesterday, a bipartisan group of 20 former U.S. attorneys — including two who served under President Bush — urged a federal judge Thursday to reject the administration’s “assertion of blanket immunity for presidential chief of staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in the congressional investigation.”
According to a new report by the Commonwealth Fund, the “number of uninsured U.S. young adults, who already represent a major chunk of the American population without health coverage, rose again in 2006.” “Based on census data, 13.7 million people aged 19 to 29 had no health insurance, either public or private, in 2006, up from 13.3 million in 2005.”
Three months after a congressional deadline, the White House “named a special inspector general to search for possible fraud and abuse in the funding of Afghanistan’s reconstruction yesterday.” While Afghanistan has largely escaped the intense scrutiny Congress has given Iraq, one official noted that “a lot of the same problems exist.”
FIFA, the world’s governing body for soccer, “abruptly lifted the suspension of Iraq’s soccer association on Thursday, easing concerns that Iraq’s team, a rare symbol of national unity, would be banned from the 2010 World Cup.” The organization suspended the team earlier this week after the Iraqi government disbanded Iraq’s Olympic Committee.
CIA Director Michael Hayden said yesterday that al Qaeda is “essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and on the defensive throughout much of the rest of the world.” “While cautioning that al Qaeda remains a serious threat,” Hayden’s assessment is “strikingly upbeat” after his agency warned last year of new threats from a resurgent al Qaeda.
And finally: The Examiner reports, “The Kiss Army fan club has an enthusiastic new recruit: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In a departure from her normally staid diplomatic duties, Rice met the legendary glam rock quartet when they happened to share a hotel in the Swedish capital.” Rice said she was “thrilled,” adding that her favorite song by the group is “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

strong>Foreclosure Phil
Who’s to blame for the biggest financial catastrophe of our time? There are plenty of culprits, but one candidate for lead perp is former Sen. Phil Gramm. Eight years ago, as part of a decades-long anti-regulatory crusade, Gramm pulled a sly legislative maneuver that greased the way to the multibillion-dollar subprime meltdown. Yet has Gramm been reviled as the villain who bankrupted Middle America? Hardly. Now a well-paid executive at a USB Swiss bank, Gramm cochairs Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign and advises the Republican candidate on economic matters.
Gramm also opposed an sec rule that would have prohibited accounting firms from getting too close to the companies they audited , according to Levitt’s memoir, he warned the sec chairman that if the commission adopted the rule, its funding would be cut. And in 1999, Gramm pushed through a historic banking deregulation bill that decimated Depression-era firewalls between commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies, and securities firms-setting off a wave of merger mania.
In December 2000, as Congress and the White House were hammering out a $384-billion omnibus spending bill, Gramm slipped in a measure called the Commodity Futures Modernization Act. Written with the help of financial industry lobbyists and cosponsored by Senator Richard Lugar (R-Ind.). Few lawmakers had either the opportunity or inclination to read the version of the bill Gramm inserted. “Nobody in either chamber had any knowledge of what was going on or what was in it,” says a congressional aide familiar with the bill’s history.
For starters, the legislation contained a provision — lobbied for by Enron, a generous contributor to Gramm — that exempted energy trading from regulatory oversight, allowing Enron to run rampant, wreck the California electricity market, and cost consumers billions before it collapsed. (Eight years earlier, his wife, Wendy Gramm, as cftc chairwoman, had pushed through a rule excluding Enron’s energy futures contracts from government oversight. Wendy later joined the company’s board, and in the following years her Enron salary and stock income brought between $915,000 and $1.8 million into the Gramm household.)
http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/05/29/9274/
Gramm was getting rid of the safeguards that had been put in place after the Depression. He taught ecomonics at Texas A&M University for 12 years. So any argument that he couldn’t foresee this happening is absolute bullsh!t. With the de-regulation came all the sub-prime loans and with the swap-related provisions of Gramm’s bill, no one made sure the banks and hedge funds had the assets to cover the losses they guaranteed. A $62 trillion dollar market, with the approval of Alan Greenspan and Treasury secretary Larry Summers, was basically unregulated.
The USB bank that Gramm works for had to write off $37 billion dollars this spring. John McCain is quoted as saying “Gramm is his economic Guru”. They deserve each other.
May 30th, 2008 at 9:04 amBowing to a court order, the White House released a long-delayed report yesterday on the “mainly harmful, impact of human-caused global warming in the United States.” According to new projections in the report, “the poor, elderly and communities with lagging public-health and public-works systems will face outsize health risks from warming.
Some of the highlights (lowlights):
_ Increased heat deaths and deaths from climate-worsened smog. In Los Angeles alone yearly heat fatalities could increase by more than 1,000 by 2080, and the Midwest and Northeast are most vulnerable to increased heat deaths.
_ Worsening water shortages for agriculture and urban users. From California to New York, lack of water will be an issue.
_ A need for billions of dollars in more power plants (one major cause of global warming gases) to cool a hotter country. The report says summer cooling will mean Seattle’s energy consumption would increase by 146 percent with the warming that could come by the end of the century.
_ More death and damage from wildfires, hurricanes and other natural disasters and extreme weather. In the last three decades, wildfire season in the West has increased by 78 days.
_ Increased insect infestations and food- and waterborne microbes and diseases. Insect and pathogen outbreaks to the forests are causing $1.5 billion in annual losses.
“Finally, climate change is very likely to accentuate the disparities already evident in the American health care system,” the report said. “Many of the expected health effects are likely to fall disproportionately on the poor, the elderly, the disabled and the uninsured.”

May 30th, 2008 at 9:08 amGovernment’s Oil Investigation 6 Months Underway
Federal regulators are six months into a wide-ranging investigation of U.S. oil markets, with a focus on possible price manipulation. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission says it started the probe in December and is taking the unusual step of publicizing it “because of today’s unprecedented market conditions.” Crude prices have risen more than 42 percent since early December, when they hovered below $90 a barrel. Gasoline prices are nearing a national average of $4 a gallon, up from about $3.20 a year ago.

Fox asks viewers for ‘voter fraud’ stories
Fox News has now set out to find the evidence of fraud that the Bush Department of Justice could not, whipping up their audience with the threat of non-citizens “getting a fake ID, a driver’s license, or a social security card and voting in this year’s election.”
Brad Friedman of BradBlog suggested, “You heard ‘em, kids. Fox is looking for voter fraud! Feel free to email them this link documenting the no-uncertain-terms case of Ann Coulter having committed voter fraud in Palm Beach County, Florida! … Let ‘em know I sent you, in case they have any further questions. I’ll be happy to speak to them, and help ‘em root out those voter fraud criminals!”
At his blog, Friedman has charged that Coulter “knowingly lied about her address on her voter registration form in Palm Beach County, Florida; proceeded to break the law again by knowingly voting at the wrong precinct; then lied about it repeatedly; hired a former Bush attorney to protect her ass; and even called in her FBI ex-boyfriend to save her bacon when it looked like the Palm Beach County Sheriff might actually have the balls to bring charges.”
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Fox_encourages_voter_fraud_stories_from_0528.html
I would love to see Ann Coulter convicted of voter fraud. Fox is worried about illegal immigrants voting, how ironic that their own political commentator committed voter fraud. Between Ann’s voter fraud and Rupert Murdoch saying “Obama is going to win by a landslide”, just might put Bill O’Rielly over the top. I think heavy sedation is in Bill’s future so that he can cope.

May 30th, 2008 at 9:15 amSmoke a Joint and Your Whole Family Could End Up Homeless
Drug addiction is bad. But the war on drugs is worse. Courtland Milloy of the Washington Post wrote a heart-breaking story that exemplifies the wasteful and counterproductive way our society deals with illegal drug use. Mr. Milloy talks about Frances Johnson, a 68-year-old grandmother in Washington, D.C. who faces eviction simply because her grandson was arrested for possessing a small amount of marijuana. The federal government’s public housing system has a “one strike and you’re out” policy for any drug law violation — even if that violation occurs miles away from home.
How does our society benefit from making homeless a whole family because of a little bit of marijuana? Why are we punishing Ms. Johnson who herself did nothing wrong? Does anyone really believe such draconian policies will help reduce marijuana use? How will an eviction affect her grandson’s chances for recovery? Should any family be kicked out of their home for a loved one’s drug use?
For 40 years, we have been waging a “war on drugs.” Just what does our $40 billion-a-year drug war get us? Our prisons are exploding with nonviolent drug offenders; families are kicked out of housing when many have done nothing wrong; thousands die from street violence generated by prohibition’s lucrative black market; and drugs remain as plentiful and easy to obtain as ever.
Enough is enough. Ms. Johnson should not be more “collateral damage” from this unwinnable war.
http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/86678/
This policy doesn’t apply if you’re from a middle class or rich family. It is a racist policy that is inhumane to the poorest people in our society. When is the last time someone with money even spent a night in jail for HARD DRUGS (Like Cocaine). They get community service work, that is never actually done. We are talking about one joint, this is beyond ludicrous.

This is all an attempt by the Republicans not to take a drubbing in November. They need some kind of help because everything the Republicans have done for the last 8 years works against every Republican who is up for re-election. Plus McCain needs some help because he knows that the war IS NOT a platform to run on. So now they will say “look here, AQ in Iraq is defeated, the surge worked and everything is going swell in Iraq”. We all know it’s a lie, though. I doubt there ever was an AQ in Iraq. I believe that a group of insurgents that wanted to look big and bad called themselves AQ, but that’s all there was.

May 30th, 2008 at 9:25 amPentagon To Shift Funds To Pay for Iraq War
The Pentagon plans to shift $9.7 billion of its overall budget to pay for war operations but warned on Wednesday it will run out of money if the U.S. Congress does not approve more funding by mid-July. The Defense Department, with major operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, sent Congress requests to transfer $5.7 billion to the Army’s personnel account from the personnel accounts of other branches of the U.S. armed services. It also asked Congress for permission to move $4 billion from the services’ operations and maintenance accounts to the Army and U.S. Special Operations Command, whose troops train local security forces and conduct counterterrorism missions.

Just a couple of questions:
1. What, exactly, happens when a Marine is “suspended”? Is he ordered to stand down in a relatively safe, combat-free place? Is he sent home? If so, there may be more coin distributors in the future.
2. Are we really surprised that some of our troops lack sensitivity toward Muslims and view their faith as heretical when their entire orientation to the culture consists of terms like “Islamofascist”, “jihadist”, etc.?
Our troops (and American civilians, too!) need to learn the difference between Muslims and terrorists. If we are to truly help the people we’re trying to help (if it’s true we’re not over there merely to rape and pillage their country), we must respect them first. This also means that the occasional American who does something to offend them must receive actual discipline — not just something done for show.

May 30th, 2008 at 9:42 amFormer prosecutors challenge White House immunity claim
Twenty former U.S. attorneys, both Republicans and Democrats, urged a federal judge Thursday to intervene in a constitutional battle over whether two White House officials should be forced to testify before Congress about the firings of nine U.S. attorneys.
The former top prosecutors, including two who served under President Bush, argue in court papers that the judge should reject the Bush administration’s assertion of blanket immunity for presidential chief of staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in the congressional investigation.
Democrats in the House of Representatives say they were forced to sue in March, more than a year after they launched the probe, because the administration has refused to allow Miers and Bolten to provide crucial information about the reasons the prosecutors were fired. The case also could determine how former presidential adviser Karl Rove responds to a subpoena in a related congressional investigation.
The lawsuit accuses administration officials of injecting partisan considerations into the firing decisions and making “questionable or outright false statements” in subsequent explanations to Congress.

Our government has never officially acknowledged this, even though we all know that the vast majority of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, more of the foreign insurgents in Iraq come from Saudi Arabia than any other country, and even Osama bin forgotten is Saudi. But since Saudi Arabia is our BFF, we pretend it all isn’t there — sort of like the way we thought of Communist China as a big empty spot that didn’t exist for many years.
What’s truly bizarre is that Michael Hayden is touting the defeat of AQ in Saudi Arabia as some sort of accomplishment when we have never acknowledged its existence there, let alone engaged them in combat. So who gets credit for defeating them?
May 30th, 2008 at 9:51 amNational Homeownership Month, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America White House News
For many Americans, owning a home represents freedom, independence, and the American dream. During National Homeownership Month, we highlight the benefits of owning a home and encourage our fellow citizens to be responsible homeowners.
My Administration is committed to helping Americans achieve their dreams of homeownership. We have worked to ensure that the mortgage industry is more transparent, reliable, and fair, and in order to sustain homeownership, we have launched initiatives to help responsible homeowners keep their homes. The FHASecure program has given the Federal Housing Administration more flexibility in refinancing mortgages for homeowners who have good credit histories but cannot afford their current payments. In addition, the HOPE NOW Alliance connects struggling homeowners with lenders, loan servicers, and mortgage counselors to help families stay in their homes. Homeowners deserve our help, and these initiatives assist those in need.
During National Homeownership Month and throughout the year, I encourage all Americans to take advantage of financial education opportunities to explore homeownership. My Advisory Council on Financial Literacy is finding ways to help educate people from all walks of life about matters pertaining to their finances and their futures. By practicing fiscal responsibility, Americans can contribute to the strength of our neighborhoods and our country.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2008 as National Homeownership Month. I call upon the people of the United States to join me in recognizing the importance of homeownership and building a more prosperous future for themselves and their communities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.
GEORGE W. BUSH

Croatia jails war crimes general
A Croatian court has convicted a former general, Mirko Norac, of war crimes against Serbs. He was sentenced to seven years in prison for failing to stop his soldiers killing and torturing Serbs in 1993. A second general on trial, Rahim Ademi, was acquitted of the same charges. They were the highest-ranking officers to be tried in Croatia for such crimes.
The case was forwarded from The Hague and was seen as a test of Croatia’s approach to wartime atrocities.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7427641.stm
It’s about time that General Mirko Norac was convicted; seven years in prison hardly suits the wartime atrocities that were committed.

Therefore, you now know what it takes to be saved and our accountable for your soul during the white throne of judgement. Do not be the one to receive this response from Jesus, “Depart from me workers of iniquities”.
I was born into a Christian household and went to church for 33 years. Thanks for the info, but I already know the song and dance. I just find Science to be the more credible, and less violent, argument.
Nice to see you again Daryll. Just as humorous as ever…

May 30th, 2008 at 10:21 amI don’t get it either.
Rev. Pfleger has long been a controversial figure in the community, frequently in the papers. He is a champion for the underclass, a fighter against the establishment, and a social reformer, who has made as many enemies as friends in Chicago. People can disagree with him, but in their hearts they have to realize that he is on the right side of issues.
Why he went to Trinity (of all places) to bash Clinton is a mystery to me. Granted it was on the Sunday when the media was filled with the Hillary comments regarding assassination and Obama – but Pfleger is too savvy not to have known the negative blowback on Obama for this.

May 30th, 2008 at 10:26 amMarie @ 53
One thing these discussions about Obama’s preacher contacts does is bring to light the fact that Democrats are christains too. You don’t have to be a republican to be a christain no matter how many times they say it.
On top of that, as Marie points out, at least the preachers that Democrats have in thier lives are on the right side of the battles, unlike the warmongering churches that have supported the republicans so shamlessly.

The U.S. military suspended a Marine yesterday “for distributing coins quoting the Gospel to Sunni Muslims” in Fallujah. The incident has “enraged Iraqis who view it as the latest example of American disrespect for Islam.”
___________________________________________________
Just a couple of questions:
1. What, exactly, happens when a Marine is “suspended”? Is he ordered to stand down in a relatively safe, combat-free place? Is he sent home? If so, there may be more coin distributors in the future.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:30 ammisshusseinmolly, I was thinking about this the other day when calling my wife at work. The last four digits in her phone number are 4377 and when she got it I remembered it because it was close to MASH 4077. As I was dailing (ok speed dialing) I thought about how people might ‘get out’ of the war like Klinger tried to by dressing up in Rush’s clothing …. I mean woman’s clothing. Now I have my answer – just try spreading christianity and poof – your ticket home.
You are beginning to remind me of one of the snail’s that creap around the garden, leaving long trail’s of slime every where you go….Blessings
Well said, & a very good morning to you #1 Witch…I really like the new moniker, Sharon…’little d’; priceless!
May 30th, 2008 at 10:32 amDaryll, if the Marine was distributing coins without approval or an order from his immediate superior then yes, he did something wrong.
For you to suggest the reason our military is currently in Iraq is to spread a religion is something I will fight against you with every fiber of my being.
Nowhere in the AUMF does it state our military is fighting any kind of crusade.
Look for it yourself here http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c107:S.J.RES.23.ENR:
You have every right to fill your head with any delusion you wish but you do not have the understanding of the foundation of our military and the rationale for being where they are.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:32 amI am so sick of all of the rhetoric about “Obama’s” pastors. Why has so little been said about the leader of Hillary’s prayer group leader, Doug Coe?
snip
Senator Clinton’s participation is surprising to observers who have investigated Coe’s group, called The Fellowship Foundation, which critics have described as a secretive organization populated mostly by conservative Republicans. “I think in part through her involvement with the Fellowship’s prayer group she was able to meet with some of these Republican senators and get to know them on a one-on-one basis,” said Joshua Green, a Senior Editor at The Atlantic magazine.
Coe also quoted Jesus and said: “One of the things [Jesus] said is ‘If any man comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, brother, sister, his own life, he can’t be a disciple.’ So I don’t care what other qualifications you have, if you don’t do that you can’t be a disciple of Christ.”
The sermons are little surprise to writer Jeff Sharlet. He lived among Coe’s followers six years ago, and came out troubled by their secrecy and rhetoric.
“We were being taught the leadership lessons of Hitler, Lenin and Mao. And I would say, ‘Isn’t there a problem with that?’ And they seemed perplexed by the question. Hitler’s genocide wasn’t really an issue for them. It was the strength that he emulated,” said Sharlet, who is a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone and is an Associate Research Scholar at the NYU Center for Religion and Media in New York.
Sharlet has now written about The Fellowship, also known to insiders as The Family, in a soon-to-be published book called “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power.”
“They’re notoriously secretive,” Sharlet said. “In fact, they jokingly call themselves the Christian Mafia. Which becomes less of a joke when you realize that they really are dedicated to being what they call an invisible organization.”
Federal tax records for Coe’s non-profit group shows it funds charitable programs around the world — but that it is also a family business.
The 990 tax forms for 2005, the last tax year available, show that both of Coe’s sons were on the payroll, at $110,000 a year each. The organization also paid his wife, his daughter and his daughters-in-law.

**Please, let’s get on with the real issues and drop all this crap about who is the better/worse Christian. I am sure God can figure all this out on His own – these are personal issues and need to be kept separate from matters of state.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:36 amlittle d,
Can Christians buy their way to Heaven with these coins?
If so, how much is the ‘going rate’ for Salvation nowadays?
Can one use a credit card to get to Heaven, as well? (I’m envisioning a drive-thru ‘church & credit’ business, where one can make monetary & spiritual deposits on their ’stairway to Heaven plan.)

Oh that is a good one. I still have a soft spot for Kiss and Gene Simmons. There are (and were) worse acts that could have made it as big but didn’t and there are better ones that should have. I think Gene is keenly aware of his place in society. I haven’t watched his tv show but I did see a show he did in England where he took classically trained kids and made a rock band out of them – highly entertaining.

There is no Satan either. Just as there is no Hell, no Heaven, and no souls. When we die, it’s exactly what it was like before we were born – do you remember that? No? Well, then perhaps you can understand why your threats of your Hell aren’t at all motivating to believe in an invisible sky wizard…

he told me that the guys he works with are talking about this

Daryll, if you’re going to be believable as a performance artist, you need to pay more attention to details.

Try to be more alert to these things.

May 30th, 2008 at 11:02 amDaryll Says: He paid the ultimate price for our lives. He could have said,”I could truly care less about humans”, and went on his merry way, but he saw something in a few of the people, which made him believe that we can redeem ourselves. Also, Adam and Eve were created before the emergence of the human sense of God (Jesus).
But why would an innocent man have to be cruelly murdered in order to save us from something we didn’t even do? Why are we guilty for what a couple people did a few thousand years ago? Would it be fair to sentence you to death for the actions of Ghengis Khan? It’s the same thing.
People are not created. They evolve from a single cell (their mother’s egg) which is fertilized by their father’s sperm through a process called sex (not a sinful thing). Both egg and sperm contain DNA, which is a blueprint for development inot a humn body (which is just a fancy vehicle to protect the DNA). It then takes 9 months of incubation before the fetus emerges into the world as a viable life. If all goes well, the person lives long enough to procreate and the DNA essentially lives on…

May 30th, 2008 at 11:12 am>This question is not important.
ah yes, because you have no good answer…
May 30th, 2008 at 11:12 amDaryll, you are familiar with our Constitution aren’t you? You do understand the basic foundations and principles this country was created on, don’t you? The only reason our troops are where they are now is by the AUMF that was signed by Bush on Sept. 18th, 2001 and the Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq signed by Bush on Oct. 2, 2002.
Those, and those alone are what the people of the united states (thru the voice of congress) and the President decided upon. Both have given this president more power than what’s healthy for this country (and other countries) but he does not have the authority to conduct a Crusade.
As for the actions of the Marine, he does not have the right to do so while wearing the uniform and serving this country. All military members give up some rights so others may keep theirs. We are not in Iraq to promote christianity.

I had to correct your mistaken idea that I’m a righty. They are as loonie as lefties. If Repubs are extremists then their counterparts in the Dem party are as well. Actually, the majority of people are moderates whether they classify themselves as Repub or Dem. It’s the extremists on each side who see everything as “us against them.”

May 30th, 2008 at 11:20 amJapanese man finds woman living in his closet
TOKYO (AFP) – A Japanese man puzzled by food mysteriously disappearing from his refrigerator got a shock when he found out a woman had been living in his home for months without permission, police said Friday.
The 57-year-old man living alone — or so he thought — in the western city of Fukuoka installed a security camera and called the police when he saw images of someone walking around his home while he was out.
“We searched the house in the man’s presence. We found the woman in the closet,” said a local police spokesman.
The woman, named as 58-year-old Tatsuko Horikawa, was found in a flat storage space only just big enough for a person to squeeze into lying down.
She had sneaked a mattress and several plastic bottles into the cubby hole, police said, adding that the women had been arrested.
“She told police that she had nowhere to live,” the spokesman said. “She seems to have lived there for about a year, but not all the time.”
It is unclear how she managed to enter the home undetected. Police suspect she might have been closet-hopping, moving from house to house.
Note to self: check closet.

May 30th, 2008 at 11:26 amit was just a thought…
According to a new report by the Commonwealth Fund, the “number of uninsured U.S. young adults, who already represent a major chunk of the American population without health coverage, rose again in 2006.” “Based on census data, 13.7 million people aged 19 to 29 had no health insurance, either public or private, in 2006, up from 13.3 million in 2005.”
There was a time when we aspired to build a better world for our children than we had. We hoped they would live longer, healthier lives, achieve more success for themselves and lead easier, happier lives. Then the conservatives took over. For the last thirty-five years our standard of living has stagnated or declined, our children are now saddled with the enormous debt of the war as well as the enormous debt for their educations, all while facing a health care system they can’t afford to use and a housing market they can’t afford to enter.
This is the legacy of conservatism.

May 30th, 2008 at 11:26 amThen this Marine is disobeying orders and was properly punished. Is your entire argument “So what” about our constitution and the laws that put this Marine where he is? So what? Really now Daryll, I get a more challenging defense from my 3 year old niece.
If you have any proof that Bush is propelling us toward a Crusade please present it here. Until you do you have nothing but “So what”. Hardly a decision shifter.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:27 amDaryll Says: Guilt by association. You are a descendant of Adam and Eve. God has already stated that you are responsible for saving your soul.
No god hasn’t. The bibles have. Remember, I already mentioned today that the bibles are not valid as the word of some supreme being because they were written by some heat-stroked desert dwellers who aren’t even identified by name. Just because they said ‘god said so’ doesn’t mean that god said so. See, you have a logical problem – I don’t think that they were following Acts 2:38.
I evolved Daryll. I didn’t descend from two ficticious apple eaters. I don’t even like apples.

Daryll Says: Wrong, I am a patriot who loves this country and our soldiers. You have to prioritize laws. God’s laws are first, next is the Constitution and Amendments.
If you put your god’s laws first, then you can’t love America. This is a secular country with separation of church and state laws that was created by Deists and likely Atheists (Piane and Jefferson) who were NOT Christians, and who, in fact, used to bash Christianity in private for being a violent and ridiculous religion.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:36 amGood morning Witch1, glad it made you chuckle. Seems the only adequate response to the Jimmy Jones style of religion that darell seems to think he has a right to impose on us.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:37 amDaryll, I won’t play in your circular argument game. Glad to hear that christian churches are being built. There were christians (and jews and hindus and others) in Iraq before we invaded.
Please provide proof of Bush’s Crusade decision and the authority to do this by the people of the United States of America.
Otherwise admit you have no evidence that this country has given this president the authority to conduct a Crusade.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:37 amDaryll Says: More Christian churches are being created in Iraq. Christians are now able to freely practice holiness. Holiness is the cure for bondage and captivity. We are freeing the Iraqis using conservative methods.
Christians used the bibles to justify slavery Daryll. The bibles do not condemn, but actually justify slavery. Or do you just ignore that part?
May 30th, 2008 at 11:38 amAs someone who tries to live in a Christian manner, I’d like to ignore all the separation of Church and State issues here.

Look just because you have a wet finger doesn’t mean we don’t know what you are. You are an opportunist who sees the winds of change blowing…..just like the vichi french. You are marked by your support for what has done so much damage to our country. You can’t get out of it by saying….I’m a moderate, I don’t support them…bla, bla.
I live in a red state and I mean a really red one but still it has become hard to find anyone who is a proud republican here…..there is good reason for that.
May 30th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Moderate policies are moderate policies, Fred. I support some moderate policies. If you are going to assert that I don’t, you’ll need to provide some evidence rather than just your opinion. I accept responsibility when policies that I support go wrong, not when politicians go wrong. My views don’t change because of public opinion. Unlike some, though, I will vote for candidates of any party if their beliefs are close to mine. In the case of Obama, I’ll even vote for someone with whom I disagree a number of issues because I agree on the most important, getting our people out of Iraq. Hopefully, there will also be an added benefit of improvement of race relations due to the election of an African American. You don’t have to hate everyone who doesn’t agree with everything that you do. Diversity of opinion is a good thing.

Daryll, how did God “influence” GWB? Did anyone witness God come down and talk to George? How do we know the truth of what you say? What if George was just dreaming, delusioning himself, suffering a coke relapse response? What if George got it wrong? Will you say that he needs only to believe and pray for forgiveness for the collateral deaths of innocents in this war and he goes to heaven? I, on the other hand am not a believer, but do not have over half a million innocent deaths on my record, yet I will go to hell? Explain the mercy of Jesus to me again.

Again, Fred, I don’t make excuses for Repubs. They are politicians and you’d be wise not put a lot of stock in what any of them say. Now that the November elections are on their minds, they’ve developed a little bit of a backbone.

I had two goals in that post. To point out how foolish the use of the ubiquitous “living in your mother’s basement” line has become. It’s such a knee jerk response that it was used in reference to adolescents. Secondly, to point out the liberal use of the trailer trash reference as an insult. Who do you suppose lives in trailers? Rich folks? No, it’s primarily poor people, the ones you claim to care so much about. Libs also accuse people of being gay as an insult, but claim to support gays. This issue came up before, and a couple of people tried some lame excuses to try and justify how it’s ok for libs to use the trailer trash reference even though it’s insulting to the poor people who live there. I don’t like hypocrisy, whether it’s exhibited by those who agree with me politcally or not.

OK, I’ve been enjoying the silly ravings of your performance so far (and being royally entertained), but this nugget begs some explanation.
1. Where is Jesus mentioned in the Constitution?
2. How does one “use” Christianity (and that word really should be capitalized, by the way) to write a document of this sort? Is it like using India ink or a fine pen nib?
What parts or aspects of the Constitution are unique to Christianity and to no other religion or ideology?
What proof or evidence do you have that Christianity was any kind of model or guide for the Constitution (or the Articles of Confederation, which served as the model for the Constitution)?
Even though backing up your positions with things like facts, evidence, and linked sources isn’t exactly part of your performance, surely you can come up with something to support your argument here. And PLEASE try to be more creative than “God spoke to me”…

The “paid by the post” line isn’t hateful like the trailer trash line, but it’s just as tired.
As often as libs accuse others of hypocrisy, it would appear that you all consider it to be of substance. Perhaps it’s only hypocrisy on the part of those who oppose you politically that you consider worthy of revelation. Lib hypocrisy is ok?

See who you run the risk of demeaning with the trailer trash remark, Fred? If you want to refer to those of low moral character, it’s best just to say so, rather than make derogatory remarks about a whole group of people.

Glad to hear you weren’t offended. I happen to know some folks who live in a trailer park. Being the good, kind people that they are, they probably wouldn’t respond to such a remark either. Trailer trash is a slur against all people who live in trailer parks. Using it to refer to those of low moral character is akin to those who justify use of the “n” word by saying they only use that for “the bad black people.” It’s particularly offensive when used by those who consider themselves to be champions of the poor.
May 30th, 2008 at 2:20 pmYou don’t have to be poor live in a trailer to be white trash. Just look in the mirror rightytighty. And living in a trailer doesn’t make a person trailer trash nor does living in your mother’s basement. Do you have a mirror down there? It’s not what you are, it’s what you do. Oh heck, maybe you don’t even need a mirror.

Upright Left, I’m rather amused by your posts on this thread! You “claim” that people who broadly paint you with the “righty/neo-conservative” brush are wrong, yet you turn around and paint others with as broad a brush as you previously lamented about others!
Can you say “cognitive dissonance”? ;-)
By the way, your positions are much less “neo-con” than they are old-style “conservative”, back when being a conservative was a good thing. That, of course, has changed. “Conservative” now seems to hold the exact same negative connotations that “liberal” did a few short years ago: mindless following of the self-blinded leaders.
I remember a joke I heard years ago: If “liberal means “too far”, then “conservative” means “not far enough”.
My personal mantra: Never keep your mind so open that it falls out of your head. Never keep your mind so closed that it suffocates.

White trash can be somewhat less offensive since it is sometimes used strictly to refer to white people of low moral character. It is sometimes used to refer to those who are simply poor as well. You are safer using that than trailer trash if you don’t want to insult poor (white)people in general. I agree that living in your mother’s basement doesn’t make you trailer trash. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) If, by white trash, you mean someone who disagrees with you, then that’s me. The “living in your mother’s basement” line has really lost it’s effectiveness as an insult. I’ve seen your work. You can do much better than that. ;)

Conservative is a bad thing to those who consider Bush to be a conservative and to the far left. My views don’t change depending upon public opinion. My post referred to those here who will attack even those who agree with them on most issues. Surely you’ve seen the threads in which a regular liberal poster has dared to express a contrary opinion on an issue and ends up being attacked almost as savagely as the most right of righties? I pointed out the comment from hellinabucket as evidence that not everyone becomes rabid at the appearance of dissent.
I’ve heard the same joke. The best place to be is somewhere in the middle, hence the term moderate.

Senator Obama. I watched as you created some distance with Jeremiah Wright after some of his more controversial comments surfaced. I think you did a good job refuting his sentiments, while attempting to support Wright and much of his work as a pastor.
You have said that you would continue to support Trinity United Church of Christ and its new pastor, Reverend Moss. Although, Moss seems like a nice person, he recently invited Father Michael Pfleger to speak at Trinity. Here are some clips of what Father Pfleger had to say:
http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=65625
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfWnY5PC0CQ
I believe that the events at Trinity are putting you in a difficult circumstance.
The more information that comes out of the church, make it apparent the organization suffers from institutional reverse racism.
Reverse racism is as repugnant as any other form of racism. It should obviously not be condoned. It should especially not be condoned by someone who aspires to lead (and set an example for) the free world.
Although, cutting your ties might cost you some support of those sympathetic to the members of Trinity; if you want to lead all Americans and not just one particular subset, it’s time for you to renounce your membership in Trinity United Church of Christ.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:26 pmCaptain,
Are all of you idiots really humor impaired? The Rev was being sarcastic, and was mocking Hillary — not being serious. It’s called making fun of someone. Sure, not the wisest thing to do in this political climate, but hardly racism of any sort.
Check out this post at TheZoo. Watch both videos. You’ll be able to tell that the man was being sarcastic — since you say you’re here to learn. Maybe….

Hilarious! I don’t suppose you see the irony of a conservative making that statement?
May 30th, 2008 at 4:42 pmZooey. I’ve got to do something else, but I’ll check out your info when I get back.
Please understand, obviously Obama can do whatever he wants. But, what I’m saying is, that if Obama wants to be president, he’s got to separate himself from Trinity.
He did a good job after the Wright comments, but now, it’s a bigger problem. (To be honest, I don’t think Wright or Pfleger are ignorant of what they are doing. I think they may be race baiting, to the detriment of Obama, because they benefit from racial discord).
I’ve got to go, but I’ll check it out later.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:12 pmOf course Condi likes Kiss… Gene Simmons voted for and supported Bush’s “foreign policies” in 2004.

May 30th, 2008 at 5:46 pmYup, irony is lost on conservatives.
Suggesting to Obama that “if you want to lead all Americans and not just one particular subset,” when your party has done nothing but “lead one particular subset” for over a decade. That political myopia you suffer from must be a real b*tch.

Of course he was mocking her. That would be the problem. Most people consider it unacceptable for a minister in the pulpit to mock people. The fact that it’s a presidential candidate and he was suggesting she is racist makes it all the worse, as does the fact that it’s Obama’s church and follows the Wright mess. If Obama’s friends don’t stop helping him, McCain will coast and we will stay in Iraq for at least four more years.
