GM may discontinue making Hummers.

By Think Progress on Jun 3rd, 2008 at 8:41 pm

GM may discontinue making Hummers.

Today, General Motors announced that it will be closing four truck and SUV plants in North America and may discontinue its Hummer line, citing the slumping sales of large vehicles brought on by high oil prices. Sales of the Hummer were down 61 percent last month, and May was also the first month in which cars outsold the Ford F-series truck since 1992. In place of the Hummer, GM CEO Rick Wagoner announced that the GM board has approved production of a new small automobile and a new electric car. As CBS reported, Wagoner “said the change in the U.S. market to smaller vehicles likely is permanent.”

Wow. Who knew? This whole thing just came screaming out of left field and who could possibly have seen it coming? Hybrids are for pussies. Americans want megarides and always will. America is a butt kicking, nation conquering country and countries like that don’t drive girlie cars with little engines and a trunk full of batteries.

American Automotive CEO’s and upper management are monstrously overpaid suits in bubbles. They haven’t had a clue and they’ve gone out of their way to avoid getting one. It’s taken driving by their own car lots packed with ridiculous vehicles that are sitting like like shiny, stupid, 3 ton turds for them to shake off their privileged stupor and acknowledge what’s been sitting on their noses for years. They’ve been as oblivious, incompetent and self absorbed as their idiot CEO buddy who’s squatting in the White House. Screw ‘em all. They don’t deserve a penny of their obese compensation.

Anyone who trusts them and uses them as a sole source of information is delusional.

  29. Bluestocking says:

I still say that in my opinion, the Hummer has to be the 21st Century equivalent of the expensive foreign sportscar — the kind driven by someone who revs the engine while stopped at a red light in order to say “look at meeeee, I have a sportscar!” It strikes me as the ultimate “don’t-f***-with-me” vehicle, the sign of a driver who’s trying to compensate for certain (*ahem*) shortcomings.

I remember seeing a positively huge yellow Hummer parked (with the motor running, if memory serves) on the corner of my block in my previous neighborhood a few years ago while the driver ran into the deli to get something. I couldn’t help thinking to myself “Gee, fella…that thing BIG enough for ya?”

Before the gas crisis of the ’70’s the car makers were ignoring the small imports. Then they panicked. I bought a Dodge Omni, which had a modified VW Rabbit engine. They didn’t even have a 4 cylinder engine to use in it. Then still ignored the small import market. Japan is now eating their lunch. Not only do the American car makers produce crappy cars, they continue to be stupid. I have bought 2 Honda Civics and have had almost no problems and I am getting 34 MPG with my ‘07 on the highway. Call me antiAmerican but I will never buy an American car again. But then with all of the American plants the Japanese are opening, how do you know what is what. There was an announcement today that the Japenese are opening 5 more plants in the USA.

No, that’s what Obama had the chance to do with FL&MI – and instead of being gracious, and letting the voters rights matter than his desires – he blew it. That’s what took me out, and LOTS (MILLIONS) of voters like me! It was short sighted, arrogant, unacceptable – and if he doesn’t value Democratic voters – SD tonight showed him what he can expect from us USELESS Hillary supporters! Good luck without us!

By the way, you PERSONALLY have been part of the anti-hillary slash and burn DIRTY SMEAR campaign yourself! Take some PERSONAL responsibility when he loses in the fall – because HATEMONGERS like yourself that were too busy hating their fellow democrats to be civil and reasonable will be a big reason why he loses if he does. The BLOGOSPHERE and the media has been biased, sexist and slanderous! You’re a shameful disgrace to democrats and democracy – and I want no part of you or your candidate! So f**k off, and stop blaming Hillary for the mess that Obama and you **sh*les created!

The person that pulls the trigger is guilty of murder, not the person that sold them the gun. Especially if there’s reasonable belief that they should legitimately have it. Most Democrats voted the same, and you have no way of knowing if Obama would have been different. That’s a lame smear worthy of rove.

As for your rules statement? Sounds like the defense wall street uses when they intentionally abuse the system in a clearly manipulative and unethical manner. Also, the rules said nothing about disenfranchising Florida – that was Obama’s plan – they just accepted it!

  53. pete says:

America is on the verge of the great epiphany. You can’t have heavy, high performance, cars and get reasonable mileage. Once we get used to the lower curb weights, and slower acceleration, we’ll appreciate the 70mpg wonders without heavy, expensive, batteries.

And those who simply must be fast and loud? There will always be a way to turn fuel into horsepower. But, we might have to live with short radius electrics or pay a $10.00 per gallon “gas hog tax”. So be it. Heck, if you think the Tesla is cool? How about a hybrid with half the battery and a micro-turbine which can burn anything from high octane gas to methanol, bio-diesel, or just about any liquid hydrocarbon with known properties. And they haven’t really even begun on hydrogen fuel. But, even today, it’s no trick to make a small vehicle with good performance and mileage. Those who need larger vehicles will have to learn to live with reduced performance.

    I don’t recall that happening in 2000 ; did I miss it ?

Yes, you did miss it. The RULES about not counting the votes was the defense that Bush used – it was that the full (recount) couldn’t occur because of the laws (rules). Also, what right do you, or the rest of the f**k*ng DNC have to disenfranchise voters – especially in Florida were the REPUBLICANS set the date in the first place? That’s absurdly undemocratic! You’re so worried about Obama’s ‘rules’, you seem to have lost sight of the fact that the voters followed the rules, and they deserve to have their votes counted as they were cast! Not having their votes CHANGED to Obama as was the case for several Michigan delegates! It’s absurd, obscene, undemocratic – and of little concern to the Obamahead WIN AT ALL COST extremists!

    June 3rd, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Are you that dumb? Never mind, yes you are. This is not about HIS RIGHTS and what rules HE FOLLOWED you MORON – it’s that voters were SPECIFICALLY AND INTENTIONALLY DISENFRANCHISED BY HIM and not the DNC! Neither he nor Hillary wanted those states to be left out of the primary – and they agreed to let it happen. When they had a chance to set things right, instead of letting the votes that people had cast count – they CHANGED them. I would have even been fine if they had given Obama the ‘UNCOMMITTED’ vote – or some portion of it. That’s pretty sad.

Not true, that’s a stupid comment. I never thought it was acceptable to have those states voices not heard, but when Obama/Hillary had the chance to FIX THIS, this weekend, Obama instead of choosing to accept the vote AS THE CITIZENS VOTED, he chose to CHANGE THE RESULTS AFTERWARDS! That’s a DISENFRANCHISEMENT – PERIOD – and Hillary did NOT do that, Obama did!

    June 3rd, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Tell me how adamant Hillary and yourself would be if Obama had won either or both of those states , you retarded shithead………

Try to tell everyone here that Hillary would want both Florida and Michigan counted if she lost one or both so we can laugh at how zanily stupid you truly are.

    You’re a fu(king idiot………….

You’re a fu(king idiot…. because if Obama had one, he would have tried to keep ALL of the delegates, and we BOTH KNOW IT! And he had won those states, he would have a HUGE POPULAR lead, which he does not have. So your HYPOTHETIC is as RETARDED as YOU ARE!

And FOR THE RECORD, I personally have ALWAYS thought it was disenfranchisement that was unacceptable – but your HYPOCRITICAL PROJECTION shows more YOUR LACK OF INTEGRITY than MINE as you try to EXCUSE THE IMMORAL BEHAVIOR or Obama!

Typical troll thinking. States which hold caucuses, by long tradition, law, and the will of the voters, should be disregarded while States, who changed their primary dates at the last minute and against long standing tradition in order to get news crews in town during the off season, should have theirs counted after the fact? Here’s a newsflash. If the voters and their representatives were concerned about counting a tainted vote? They should have boycotted any vote which violated the rules.

You mean by tradition where party insiders make decisions for the state, and the popular voter isn’t trusted to make a decision? I’ll repeat for you, as you seem slow. Caucuses don’t represent popular vote – anymore than the superdelegates do… Texas proved this succinctly… And you can’t ‘extrapolate’ a popular estimate out of it – it’s as dishonest as taking away votes that were cast to another candidate. It’s a misrepresentation of the situation.

    Well then, forget it. ;)

  165. Bluestocking says:

In place of the Hummer, GM CEO Rick Wagoner announced that the GM board has approved production of a new small automobile and a new electric car.

    *******************************************************

Hmmmmm…that wouldn’t happen to be the EV1, by any chance, would it? As in, the car about which the documentary “Who Killed The Electric Car?” was made — the models which they first started offering for lease only in 1997 in Arizona and California, then turned around and basically tried to erase from existence six years later? And yes, I think the phrase “erase from existence” is very apropos…according to the documentary, GM insisted on reclaiming every single car that was leased in spite of waiting lists and positive user feedback and offers to purchase the cars, and then chose to shred the cars despite previously having promised that they would be re-used.

  166. Jane E. Schneider says:

Thanks for reminding us about that, Bluestocking. I remember hearing about GM taking the cars back and destroying them, it was so infuriating. What a freaking waste! And what a bunch of a-holes!

  167. Nevar says:

Lets see, 1997 plus 6 equals 2003… yeah, that’s about right… I’m surprised it took that long for Cheney and Co. to buy them out…

  168. Bluestocking says:

Thanks for reminding us about that, Bluestocking. I remember hearing about GM taking the cars back and destroying them, it was so infuriating. What a freaking waste! And what a bunch of a-holes! — Jane E. Schneider

    ********************************************************

Thanks, Jane. I only recently became acquainted with this issue myself because of that documentary, and I almost couldn’t believe it. Do I think that GM’s decision had anything to do with pressure from the oil industry? Oh, you betcha!

It seems safe to say that GM may have been getting its comeuppance in recent years, considering that they haven’t been doing very well — and reportedly, even their CEO Rick Wagoner has apparently acknowledged that terminating the program was one of the worst decisions made during his tenure. According to the documentary, a large part of this reason may lie with Toyota. Apparently, when the EV1 first came out, Toyota understandably began to get nervous and began trying to think of ways that they could compete with what they saw as an emerging threat — and eventually, at least to all appearances, what they came up with was the Prius. When GM junked the EV1, they had no idea that gas prices would rise to such stratospheric levels. Admittedly, I don’t think anybody could have know back then…but at the same time, one is inclined to think that an intelligent person would have recognized at the time (even more so today) that unrest in the Middle East could potentially become a threat to our petroleum supplies.

  169. RantingTommy says:

wow, RHF turned wackadoodle pretty quickly there

Glad to know that she represents only a tiny tiny minority of Clinton supporters

Although, the thought that someone who thinks Hillary lost for being female would rather see the anti-choice, misogynistic, pasty old white male become president seems rather hard to believe.

You don’t think she was a republican plant all along, do you?

  170. barfly says:

Apropo of nothing, last night on local television, I saw a news piece, about a three-wheeled hybid manufactured in Carlsbad, that tops out at ninety, and gets three hundred miles per gallon. The thing’s made of carbon fiber, seats two comfortably, and does zero-to-sixty in 8 seconds.

  171. RantingTommy says:

There is an electric mini cooper in testing this summer that does 0-60 in 4 seconds, will do 150+mph, and has a range of 900 miles thanks to a tiny gas (or other fueled) motor that idles and charges the battery.

  172. Cats r Flyfishn says:

RHF – wow, you sound heartbroken because your candidate Hillary Clinton did NOT win the nomination. It’s time for you to go off somewhere and lick your wounds for about 3 or 4 months. You will feel better and be able to think more clearly. Right now, your comments sound irrational and filled with anger. Spill out the anger, go have a bottle of wine, cry a bit and then move on. This whole process will take 3 months. If you are a man, you might even want to grow a beard. It seems to be therapeutic to some.

  173. liberal traitor says:

GOOD. F___ Hummers and the people who drive them, especially in the city. Every time I see one of those cruising around through downtown with a Bush-Cheney sticker on it, I wish I wasn’t a pacifist…

  174. Brown1 says:

Well after hearing about GM doing away with the Hummer, this very much upsets me. Yes I have a 2006 H3 Hummer, 1977 Corvette and a 2008 chevy Silverado Diesel Truck. My husband and I work very hard for what we have, So to read people slam other people and about what they drive or how much the spend in gas, very upsets me. These people should be upset with our government, and the way this country is ran, not what people are driving and spending on gas. The last time I looked my husband and I are the only ones paying our bills and buying our gas. So before you start putting the Hummers or other SUV as some of you stated (gas suckers)you should be thinking about the real problem with this country. The gas increase is not due to the large SUV’s or people that drive Hummers. So yes all my life I wanted a Hummer and I bought one 2 years ago, and it is not bad at all on gas, and if it was it is no ones business but the person driving it.I am very upset for GM, for even thinking about doing away with the Hummer. And upset with our government and the large corp. investors and owner of the oil companies for doing this to the American people. It is bad enough that most of our jobs are leaving the US, so I feel that people should band together and start focusing on the real problems, and causes of these problems. And not I am not a Bush-Chaney backer, I am for anybody that can help to turn our country around and make it a better place for all of us, with jobs. So yes I love my H3 Hummer, and no it is not bad on gas.
