Speaking at AIPAC yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) mocked the idea of direct talks with Iranian leadership, specifically rejecting “sitting down unconditionally with the Iranian president or supreme leader in the hope that we can talk sense into them.”
This morning, top McCain adviser Steve Schmidt also ridiculed the notion of talking to Iranian leaders, disingenuously claiming that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is “arrogant” and would be trying to “charm” Iran to change its ways:
Iran is supplying deadly munitions used to kill Americans in Iraq. … Is Senator Obama so arrogant that he believes that he will charm his way into getting the Iranians to change their policies, supporting terrorist organizations?
Watch it:
Today, however, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced that next week, he will be making his “second trip in a year’s time” to Iran. Maliki will meet with Ayatollah Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad to discuss “the security pact between Iraq and the U.S.”
Maliki will also address one of McCain’s major complaints — “growing concerns among Iraqis and Americans that Iranian agents are training and arming Shiite militants in Iraq.” Just last week, Adel Abdul Mahdi, Iraq’s Shi’ite vice president, also sat down with Ahmadinejad and discussed “bilateral relations and security issues.”
“[I]t’s hard to see what such a summit with President Ahmadinejad would actually gain,” McCain remarked yesterday. “Such a spectacle would harm Iranian moderates and dissidents,” he added. Will McCain publicly ridicule Maliki and senior Iraqi leaders as “arrogant” and claim they are trying to “charm” Iran?
Iran is supplying deadly munitions used to kill Americans in Iraq.
Proof, please.
June 3rd, 2008 at 6:59 pmLet’s see, the last time this lying POS Bush Administration tried to point out Iranian Weapons in Iraq, they were not Iranian weapons.
So, prey tell, where are these so called Weapons they are supplying?
We aren’t buying anymore BS from republican liars anymore.
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:12 pmMr. McCain never said he would never talk to anyone never. Only not ever.
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:13 pmMaliki will meet with Ayatollah Khamenei and President Ahmadinejad .
It seems that Maliki, unlike Sen McCain, realizes that Ahmadinejad is not calling the shots in Iran. Ayatollah Khameni has absolute veto power over Iran’s policies…foreign and domestic.
Iraq’s Suni neighbors are balking at forgiving Iraq’s Foreign Debt (Much of it run up under Sadaam Husseins Rule). Why?
The Malaki Govt.’s close ties to Iran.

June 3rd, 2008 at 7:14 pmYeah, maybe he’ll meet with them and all, but there’s probably, like, y’know… preconditions and sh!t.
‘Cause Va_Voom seemed to say that it’s the preconditions that cause all the trouble. Too bad he didn’t stick around to explain why…

June 3rd, 2008 at 7:16 pmSomething the wingnuts still can’t grasp, when it is discussed that Obama might meet our enemies “without preconditions” that is not only no preconditions on them, our enemies, but no preconditions on us, America. That is, we are not giving anything away just by meeting with them and we might even start to make progress toward something positive. If one follows McCains lead, you don’t get anywhere.

Good luck with that………….

“…in the hope that we can talk sense into them.”
“…Iran to change its ways…”
The whole concept of diplomacy, democracy, compromise, and mature negotiation requires an open mind. With the typical bushco mind set of we are right and they definitely are the bad asses there is absolutely no chance of a settlement or an agreement. The United States is doing exactly the same in Iraq as Iran is allegedly doing. The only difference is the direction of your view. As long as this Country’s leaders(?) have the greedy motivation of the bushco there will never be a peaceful settlement. This is exactly what Bush/Cheney/McSame have set as their goals. With the oil companies and the bushco contractors stealing the world blind they sure as hell don’t want peace anywhere there is a barrel of oil to steal. Oil is at $130 per barrel because Bush went to war in Iraq. But not because of the war. The war was the only way the bushco could drive up the price. As soon as the Dems get in control the oil prices will go down to $40 per barrel again because the oil companies will be faced with vigorous prosecution without the protection of bushco.

Remember how American elected officials in the 13 colonies were absolutely neglected and seen with contempt by the British authorities?
People with power doesn’t care about people without power.
And allow me to be romantic…if the world goes upside down and Haiti becomes Superpower, it would be the same thing.
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:03 pm# 1 – juan – good question – in fact there is no proof – kevin bergner who i believe serves with the national security council said about a month ago that there is absolutely NO evidence that iran are supplying guns and bombs to insurgents in iraq – the only report i heard of this revelation was from keith olbermann – the rest of the msn missed it,or chose not to follow up – why didn’t they confront the mcsames and bushies on this?
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:04 pmand this will be ahmadinejad’s 2nd trip to iraq this year – why isn’t anybody asking mccain why the iraqi government are hosting state sponsors of terror (according to mcsame, cheney and the likes) probably at some cost to american tax payers since, after all,the bushies are al malaki’s crutch.
How convient McCain and his handlers never mention how close the Maliki government is with big, bad Iran. YOUR little buddy Chimpy made Iran the true winner of the war. Whats really sad is the sheep are already lining up behind McCain because he would make good “tactical” decisions. Yeah right, that addle brained moron can’t keep any of the factions straight over there.

June 3rd, 2008 at 8:10 pmIran is supplying deadly munitions used to kill Americans in Iraq. … Is Senator Obama so arrogant that he believes that he will charm his way into getting the Iranians to change their policies, supporting terrorist organizations?
First, there is no proof that Iran is supplying munitions to kill Americans. The last time our government tried to prove that they had to cancel the “show and tell” because none of the thousands of munitions they had were from Iran.
Second, if Barack Obama can charm Iran into cooperating with it’s neighbors and the world, more power to him!
On the subject of Barack Obama. Do you suppose that TP will ignore the fact that history is being made on this day? It’s really a shame. TP is the only blog I know who has totally ignored the Democrat’s primary. What has it gained Hillary? Nothing. What has it done to TP, a lot. It has seriously eroded the viability and honesty of this site.

They will continue to support the politicians and the security forces, believing the lies of their unsustainable way of life.
Iran is supplying deadly munitions used to kill Americans in Iraq. …
This administration has made enough unsubstantiated claims without adding to it ; and that type of dishonest behavior is now also being used by the McAntiDiplomcay camp.
How long are they going to insist on outright lying to the American people ?

Oligarchial collectivism and they have wiped themselves and their empires out many times. They dont seem to learn from history, in fact they would find doing things differently to be “Crazy Eddie”
June 3rd, 2008 at 8:41 pmJohn McCain is a liar. He is also an old fart who can’t remember his lines. He is so low that he will say or do anything to get elected. This is the only man in America who isn’t smarter than Bush. He guy is worst than Bush and would lead this country into a DEPRESSION. So any fool who votes for him is voting to lose not only what he has, but to destroy everything we have accomplished since the last depression. If you don’t believe what I’m saying just look at his so called economic plan. It’s more of the same crap we got from Bush.
The republicans don’t have any ideas so they run on the same crap every 4 years. They say they will cut taxes, lower spending and increase military spending. And every time they get in office, they cut taxes for the rich, increase spending and deficits and buy things the military don’t want. Besides not having an economic plan, McCain doesn’t even know what he’s doing when it comes to Iraq.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:00 pmMcCain is toast. No matter what he says or does, he is the GOP, the neocons and the Bush administration. This combination has squandered the health, wealth and security of our nation.
I am listening to McCain speaking to supporters and he makes me retch. He sounds like a kindergarten teacher speaking down to the kindergarten students. He keeps punctuating his points “now that’s not change we can believe in”, referring to Obama. What he is saying is, expect no change form me (McCain). He makes me sick.
The GOP is like the band of talentless athletes that band together well, is organized and follows specific instructions. They may win a few games with this organization but a team such as this will never be exciting and never show leadership – they are by definition all followers. When faced with a team of less organized by highly talented players they get their ass handed to them and the fans fault the powerhouse team for running up the score.
Well get used to it because, barring the help of Diebold, McCain is going to lose 100 to nothing. NONE TOO SOON!
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:07 pmIt’s just the sad, naked truth that McCain has chosen his campaign strategy as saying whatever he has to say, to whatever audience he has to say it to, just to get votes. That is what our “Maverick” from AZ has decided to do. Thus making a complete jackass, moron out of himself.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:08 pmWTF drives the paranoid xenophobia of the Reichwing? Are they just plain lying, or genetically programed to forget that no conflict can be resolved without negotiation. And refusing to negotiate with a country, which no one can prove has ever fired a shot at us, is asinine.
Demanding that a Presidential candidate forswear negotiations with a philosophical opponent is like asking an incoming company president to forswear negotiation with an existing customer. And to suggest that Iraqi officials shouldn’t negotiate with Iran is akin to demanding someone build a home, without permits or permission, on a crowded city block.
Even “the glorious” WW2 ended with face to face negotiation. The Allies were firm and demanding, but, either opponent could have conceivably continued fighting for some time. We do not have the right, either bestowed or won, to demand terms from Iran. Both parties obviously have deal breakers, but, those issues can’t be resolved, or even identified, without discussion.
Do any of today’s chickenhawks realize that their attitude would have resulted in the execution of thousands of POW’s saved by the end of WW2? Don’t the people in charge of the GOP, including some of the Cold War negotiators, realize that negotiation ended the freakin Cold War? Do you think that McPander Bear realizes that, if today’s neocons had been running the show, he would still be a prisoner in N. Vietnam? Geesh! It’s a wonder they can manage dressing themselves with that apparent degree of brain damage.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:36 pmThe Bushco corporate-fueled foray into the Middle East has failed. Abjectly.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:36 pmEveryone knows it. Even fools like McCain and this hose-lipped top adviser of his knows it.
However, they have taken the money, sold their souls, and they have to blurt onward.
Forget Ahmadinejad, we need to stop talking to McCain.

June 3rd, 2008 at 11:26 pmOh sure, Maliki will meet with Iran’s leaders without preconditions, but when was the last time he visited Iraq?
June 3rd, 2008 at 11:55 pmIt is hard to read what Maliki is up to, beyond a divide and conquer strategy. Throw in Iran’s deep desire to get American troops out of Iraq and the outcome gets pretty clear but not the means to getting there.
Maliki sides with the Badr organizstion to weaken al Sadr in Basra and other areas in the south before striking up a deal over Sadr City. Next is the announcement that Iraq is looking to purchase sophisticated weapons from France where there would be few strings attached on their use. Now he is going to Iran to negotiate the security deal between Iraq and the US. While this was going on, al Sistani issued a Fatwa saying that killing the occupiers was allowed.
My first thought when the possible weapons deal with France was announced was that Maliki wanted the weapons to crush his political opponents and set up a Saddam like government. Now I wonder how many of these weapons might just end up being shipped to Iran.
Now with so many players and so many conflicting signs coming out of that region, how can the tired old senile John McCain connect the dots and come up with a Mid-East policy that doesn’t simply cause things to spiral even more out of control.

Juan C,
About that hate our freedoms thingy…
The “THEY” the president refers to is NOT an insurgent or a terrorist. Not even George can produce one terrorist that has attempted to harm my freedoms…
But I can show you a Congress filled with American Freedom haters.
After all, it wasn’t terrorists that revoked my Habeas Corpus Rights, now was it? Or was it a terrorist that wiretapped me, WARRANTLESSLY, and lobbied and attempted to legislate retroactive legislation to allow the continuation of usurping my freedoms? Oh, which terrorist signed off on TORTURE, again? And which terrorist organization labels me a domestic threat because I exorcise my Constitutional Freedom to peaceful protest on Federal land?
R E M E M B E R:
THEY(sic) HATE US FOR OUR FREEDOMS…
… And so THEY(sic) debate the merrits to legislating away our Freedoms.
I want my Freedom to be an American, back!
.
June 4th, 2008 at 1:18 amMcCain is the one with the lack of judgment. Like it or not Iran is a major player in the region with very close connections inside Iraq. Iran is key to solving the Iraq-disaster and you cant treat it like some irrational terrorsupporting rogue-state that you can bully and bomb into submission. That would only make the Iranian leadership more determined than ever to get the bomb
June 4th, 2008 at 2:07 amNothing like toppling Sadaam so that the new government will be butt buddies with the Iranians. A foreign policy blunder of historic proportions.
