Bush congratulates Obama on becoming the Democratic nominee.

Reuters reports:

President George W. Bush offered his congratulations to Sen. Barack Obama for securing the Democratic presidential nomination, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said on Wednesday.

“President Bush congratulates Sen. Obama for clinching the Democratic party’s 2008 nomination for president,” Perino told reporters. “He knows from personal experience that the presidential nominating process is a grueling one and Sen. Obama came a long way in becoming his party’s nominee.”

Bush, however, did not personally call Obama to offer his congratulations, nor did Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told the AP “that Obama’s success represents an ‘extraordinary’ development for the nation.”

I love how both Bush and Cheney do these things through spokesmen. Cheney is stupid enough to make that incest joke, but he can’t grow the balls to apologize himself?

This sort of stuff would seem crappy just between vague acquaintances in my every day life… Let alone between people of this stature.

  2. RantingTommy says:

Wow, even Bush acknowledged Obama’s victory.

  3. Jim says:

If Obama made an announcement like this through a spokesman, as Hillary Clinton and George W. Bush have done, there’d be nothing but 24-7 press coverage about what how “elitist” and “out of touch” Obama is. Expect that to be your dominant mainstream media narrative for the next five months.

  4. RantingTommy says:

At least TP can report on Bush’s reaction to Obama’s victory.

    For #36, J : re AIPAC.
I saw the speech today as well. It’s the speech any American President needs to make. Israel is an ally (whether you like it or not) and they do need to be protected – the extermination of the Jews is not yet 100 years old and still very fresh.
Also, just like Hagee and Bush, there are those in the region who are very fanatically religious and read and live by their scriptures verbatim. SO he had to make the world know that nothing will change as far as the relationship with Israel, but unlike Bush, he’s going to try harder to bring about peace – he never guaranteed peace, though.

I am sure he would tackle the Darfur situation as well and many other world issues.
Please remember, he can’t change anything as President unless he IS the President.
All in all – the right speech for the right place. Also a very strong speech – he did come off as very Presidential in his mannerisms.

Because our election process for President was set as a delegate style democracy/republic, and those delegates are sent to the Electoral College to cast their votes, each party sets their own version for the primaries. This is still a hang over from the days of horse and buggy when a “popular vote” would have taken a very, very long time to tally.

In this case it would be totally impossible to pass when you consider an Amendment needs ratification from 3/4 of state legislatures and the little states would never, ever, ever vote to get rid of the Electoral College. It would be madness for them to do so. And in a way, I don’t think it would be good, either. If you need 60 million votes to win the Presidency, you could get that by campaigning in a dozen or so Urban centers and ignore the rest of the country.

But it is academic, the College is here to stay.

Very well said. That is correct. If the vote were 100% popular, think about the disenfranchised voters in smaller, more rural states. The candidates could ‘do the math’ and just target those spots to get to the magic number. As it is, the electorial college levels the playing field somewhat.

The electorial college is a throw back to when rural citizens simply could not find the time (they were farmers, mostly) or the opportunity to go to the voting booth. This was a way for the group in those areas to designate a ‘delegate’ to vote on their behalf. In the old days, it could take a treveller days and days to get to the polling place, so this was a way to include those who cuold not physically be there to vote.

Thanks for reminding us about that, now we can hold him to it!

There has been very little “sore winning” as far as I can tell. I have visited several blogs over the last 24 hrs and the one thing that stands out is the hillary folks are bitter, angry, attacking Obama like a reich-winger, and are acting like sore losers.

That’s because Ms. Clinton has cultivated that pouting, vengeful attitude in her followers. She never describes Mr. Obama in anywhere near the glowing terms he does when talking about her. Her campaign has been all about her, her womanhood, her (pseudo-) qualifications for the job of President. She sounds a lot like Mr. McCain in that regard. Vote for me because I can take care of YOU!

Mr. Obama’s campaign has been about us, empowering people to create and support the changes that need to happen. His campaign has only been about him when he’s been forced into it — think Reverend Wright for example.

I’m so very tired of handing over my taxes and my privacy and my rights to a government who knows best.

    murdoch’s intentions already… i can’t go there; perhaps
someone will be able to fact check this:

    The Obama We Don’t Know
Wall Street Journal – 2 hours ago
With Barack Obama clinching the Democratic Party nomination, it is worth noting what an extraordinary moment this is. Democrats are nominating a freshman Senator barely three years out of the Illinois legislature whom most of America still hardly knows …
    _____________________________________

We’re gonna see a lot of this sort of stuff between now and November. This is all the GOP has in its quiver, so they are going to exploit the heck out of it.

As far as “fact checking” — Obama was elected U.S. Senator in 2004, starting his term in January 2005. Therefore, the “barely three years” out of the Illinois legislature has some validity, but that context dismisses his eight years IN the Illinois legislature as irrelevant (pure spin).

This is an attempt by Murdoch to make elected office experience a campaign issue. So Obama will have had 12 years of elected office experience by Inauguration Day. Compare that with Dubya Bush (6 years as Tex Gov.), Ronald Reagan (8 years as California Gov.), Jimmy Carter (4 years as Georgia Gov.), etc.

Want to discount the Illinois legislature experience because it wasn’t “national” experience? In that case, you would have to discount ALL the experience of Dubya, Clinton, Reagan, and Carter, since ALL their political experience was at the state level before being elected president.

As far as the “whom most of America still hardly knows” comment goes, that’s pretty much true of most candidates even at this stage of the game. Unless the candidate has already established a high national profile (Hillary Clinton would fall in that category), a candidate is usually well-known to part of the country (such as his own state or district) and has to introduce himself to the rest of the country during the presidential campaign. Obama is no different from previous candidates in this regard.

Methinks Murdoch is merely trying to spin Obama into some kind of scary stranger/boogeyman that we shouldn’t trust.

Who would be dumb enough to vote for McCain rather than Obama? That is unbelievable ! Because of race, another 4 years of bushdom?

I don’t think it’s going to be all about race, but admittedly race will figure in the minds of some voters. There are a number of diehard Republicans out there who would readily vote for Colin Powell, Alan Keyes, Condi Rice, or Clarence Thomas if they were heading the GOP ticket — ANYBODY but a Democrat (in other words, party trumps race). There are also some Hillary supporters who claim they are going to vote for McCain before they vote for Obama. Some of that may be due to race to be sure, but I suspect there’s also a fair amount that’s just due to sore-loser syndrome.

To everyone who is sick to death of the fact that TP refuses to cover the Presidential race in it’s entirety, I invite you to go to Huffington Post or Daily KOS and join in the discussions of the entire race for President.

TP does not deserve your loyalty. Their “head in the sand” stance to Obama has not done anything to improve Hillary’s chances and has in fact invalidated this site.

#112 – Some of us are happy not to have the political race dominate everything. Especially when the race seems already decided even months ago. Do we really think the public has a voice ?

Eh — RTF is just a mechanical talking doll at this point. Pull his string and all he can say is, “I’m never voting for Obama because he disenfranchised millions of voters.” You’ll never change his mind, even if you were to point out the obvious lack of logic in his argument.

Pay him no mind. Eventually, he’ll get tired of pouting. Either that, or he’s going to look ridiculous on Inauguration Day waving his Hillary sign.

  110. DRxJ says:

How do millions of voters become disenfranchised, when it was their states that decided to break the rules regarding the primaries? And both candidates accepted the terms of penalty?

or should I have interjected the paragraph above with:
    “You stupid c*nt!”
    “dum bass”
    “ROTFL!
    ROTFL!
    ROTFL!”
“No wonder you suffer from Aspergers Disease, princess Exley”

  111. kassandrasduplex says:

If Greg Palast is correct, black voters have been caged out of the presidential election to a great degree. Doesn’t this then mean that Obama’s strongest demographic is likely his weakest at least in terms of actual counted votes?
