Kevin Grandia notes that a May 28 press release from GE, a leading coal-energy powerhouse and advocate of “clean coal” technology, seems to question whether carbon dioxide is directly causing climate change, citing it as only a “possible contributing factor.” The press release reads:
GE is a leader in the development, and application of IGCC technology, while Schlumberger provides unique expertise, technology and project management for the storage of carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is a possible contributing factor to climate change.
In fact, as the IPCC has noted, it is very clear that greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, are causing global warming. “This statement is made all the more stranger considering the major marketing effort GE has undertaken to paint itself as a leader on reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Grandia notes.
“CO2 is a possible contributing factor to climate change.”
Just as George WTF Bush is a possible contributing factor to the illegal war in Iraq and the corruption of the Resucklican party.

No-o-o-o…really?!? Imagine that…who would’ve thunk it? (*sarcasm off*)
I’ll answer my own question…actually, just about anyone with two functioning brain cells to rub together who’s been paying any attention at all for the last ten-plus years would’ve thunk it, unless their residence during most of that time had something to do with an isolated Pacific atoll or the underside of a rock…
June 4th, 2008 at 8:21 pmDer. Ya think?
June 4th, 2008 at 8:33 pmI suppose anything is possible… yesterday it was the sun causing global warming, today it’s CO2, what will it be tomorrow, reflected light from the other planets?
sarc/off
GE and all the other energy companies will now begin to grease us up for the big bendover as they begin to make us pay for the problems they have exacerbated.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:07 pmI think you may be shooting blanks this time: my memory of the UN report(s) is that they (perhaps carefully?) did NOT attempt to attribute “cause” but instead spoke of the overwhelming evidence that CO2 “contributed” to global warming. I don’t know what game is afoot with GE this time, but “contribute” is fair use.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:35 pmThey (corporations) won’t use the term “cause”, because cause leads to blame, and blame leads to litigation.
Of course they are going to use terms like “contribute” and “possible”, that way they can avoid costly cleanups and liabilities, while at the same time cultivating the cuddly and caring image that they want to do something positive for the health and well being of the customers.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:45 pmPlease note the use of the word image.
Maybe which should promote phytoplankton bloom in the North Pacific. Oh wait a minute that would interfer with the floating garbage zone. Where is that god damned Lorax when you need his furry little ass?
June 4th, 2008 at 9:46 pmWhich was we
June 4th, 2008 at 9:47 pmAnd, davez, I will acknowledge this is a pretty thin skim of ice to support a thread, but global warming threads are very popular here, they bring all kinds of creatures out from their burrows.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:50 pmNot to mention balancing out the McCain bashing, as he is seemingly the only other person in the news lately…sarc/off

June 4th, 2008 at 9:52 pmSo did anyone hear if Obama has secured the nomination just yet?
June 4th, 2008 at 9:54 pm**snort**
June 4th, 2008 at 9:55 pmGE is “one of them” according to Mt. Billo. And we all know when Mt. Billo erupts, his CO2 emissions just damage any Republicans and others of the ilk affiliated with him.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:49 pmSpeaking of climates changed and changing, the Mars Phoenix lander has begun digging away with it’s little backhoe.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:55 pmIt has already reached a hard, light colored layer a few centimeters down that is similar to the strata exposed underneath the lander by the retro-rockets during it’s landing.
It appears the lander may be sitting upon the Martian equivalent of a glacier of water ice.
Cheers!

June 4th, 2008 at 11:06 pmI used to pay a lot more attention to cool shit like this. I assume NASA and others have dedicated sites that I could check out. The exobio piece and current events aspect may make this useful for entertaining the Alice Cooperesque learners I have to deal with till two fridays from this one
Here you go… off to Mars….

June 4th, 2008 at 11:12 pmThanks so much. Now could you pull together some executable lesson plans, copies of all associated students assignments including the assessment rubrics, modifications for the 504 and other special service students, and strageies for student success.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:18 pm… uhh, like, I’m special ed……. I don’t do everything everyone else does….. can I have my I-Pod back now?
June 4th, 2008 at 11:23 pmis this working?
June 4th, 2008 at 11:31 pmWow that is weird as the last three I did didn’t make it
June 4th, 2008 at 11:32 pmSeriously, I’m hoping that the knowledge of a neighbor planet, and it’s history, may bring an interest and a willingness to respect our own planet a little more.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:32 pmThe realization of just how tenuous and delicate our presence here is may bring about a little more care for our actions and impacts.
Were you ana!yzing too much?
June 4th, 2008 at 11:33 pmNo I have only been satirizing the public ed system. Still it happened a 4th time
June 4th, 2008 at 11:43 pmGE is a definite contributing factor to corporate stupidity.
June 5th, 2008 at 12:21 amKinda like the 32 caliber slug that went through the brain was a possible contributing factor to the suicide.
June 5th, 2008 at 12:57 amReally GE? A “possible contributing factor”??
Its been known for well over a hundred years CO2 contribute to climate-change.
The first calculations of global warming to increasing CO2-levels in the atmosphere were done by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius a hundred years ago. He and his colleagues did these calculations because they found industries were adding CO2 to the atmosphere slightly faster than nature was able to absorb it. Arrhenius estimated a doubling of CO2-levels would warm the planet by about 5-6 C, 2-3 degrees higher than modern calculations
Again this was a hundred years ago

Because heat eats oxygen, alot of the time >_> scientists theorize that other planets with low oxygen content are warmer or colder (depending on their ‘weather’…which is affected by time and the sun’s cycles…obviously).
June 5th, 2008 at 5:49 am“Contributing” is a good way to put it, I say.
Since we all breathe out C02, and pollution has alot of it, etc…but getting rid of all C02 is foolish. Trees and plants need carbon dioxide or else they die and we have NO oxygen.
I think actually we focus a bit too much on carbon, and not enough on harmful pollution and chemicles…since they are -not- synonymous.
GE BUILDS NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS! Get it? They haven’t turned green. This is the beginning of what will be a huge push to build nukuyalr power plants.
The question we have to keep in the discourse is: OK, what will we do with the nuclear waste? As we speak, massive quantities of highly radioactive material sit in flimisily protected cooling pools at Indian Point, a few miles from where I sit, right in the middle of the NYC suburban sprawl.
I don’t think progressives should be blindly opposed to nuclear power. But construction of massive # of power plants raise the odds in favor of a catastrophic accident.
And until the issue of waste disposal is solved (the matter has been tied up in political and technical wrangling), the specter of accumulating visciously toxic and radioactive material piling up around the country is terrifying.

Bu$$hCo will be on a mad dash to fulfill the wish list of the fascist industrialists and corporatists before this mis-administration’s term expires.
Bu$$hCo can save the world of the ravages of “Global Warming” by allowing nuclear power plants to be built at -expedited no local review or court cases allowed – all over America. Every state should have 10 nuke power plants and that would cut-down on dependence on foreign oil.
This will cut-down on CO2 gases, the Yucca Mnt. nuke storage facility must be opened, and the nuke waste can be processed into Depleted Uranium weaponry. Then we declare war on some poor country – dumping our reprocessed nuke waste on their soil.

Bush, It’s Dejavu All Over Again.”
McCain, a longtime backer of the waste dump most Nevadans oppose, responded to a question at the town hall meeting about Yucca Mountain by saying he’s not the kind of politician who tells voters only what they want to hear. He said he earlier told the people of Iowa he doesn’t support ethanol subsidies and he still doesn’t.
