Report: In White House Meeting Today, Olmert Will Urge Bush To Attack Iran

ehud.gifThe Israeli press is reporting today, during a White House meeting today, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will urge President Bush to prepare an attack on Iran:

Citing sources close to the Israeli prime minister, Yediot Achronot reported on its front page Wednesday that Olmert, who is due to hold closed-door talks with Bush in Washington, will say that “time is running out” on diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program.

The Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin writes that “there are some signs that [Olmert will] have a receptive audience” in his White House meeting. Speaking at AIPAC yesterday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered an “unusually sharp” verbal assault against Iran. Olmert himself told the audience, “We must stop the Iranian threat by all possible means.”

Despite Bush and Olmert’s mutual agreement on the possible need for force, Yediot Achronot reports that a variety of factors are weighing against such a course of action:

It is doubtful whether such decision, under such circumstances, has a precedent in American history. Almost everything is working against it: The Iranians are not threatening the United States. They are careful about not initiating an incident that would give the Americans a pretext to attack. Such operation has no international support, not openly at least, and most of all, following the entanglement in Iraq most Americans strongly object to opening yet another front in the Middle East and treat any military initiative by Bush with suspicion.

Nevertheless, as time ticks down on Bush’s presidency, the rumors of a possible last-minute military strike on Iran are increasing. The Jerusalem Post reported last month that a senior administration official told Israeli officials to anticipate such an attack.

While the White House has dismissed these reports by claiming they are “not worth the paper they’re printed on,” neoconservatives are getting a very different message. Asked recently whether he could imagine Bush attacking Iran before the end of his term,” John Bolton said, “I think so, definitely.” Norman Podhoretz has made a similar claim. Richard Perle has said he has “very little doubt” that Bush could order a strike before he leaves office.

Will the grand neocon plan work?
The plan was to take out Iraq, Iran and Syria.

So far only 1/3 of the plan from the ‘Clean Break’ (google it) and PNAC mission statement was accomplished.

Will America and her children fight another war for Israel?

  2. texaslady says:

Can anyone blame Iran for wanting nuclear power when mr.crazy bush wants to invade, invade, invade? I sure would want some defenses against warmonger bush. And with just what Army will bush use, the ones who have been stop-lossed for 18 months? Interesting that the Airborne even are using their people for ground actions.

Wow, what a surprise…unfortunately, if Olmert presents his proposal in a manner that questions bush’s manhood, then the bombers leave by 5 PM!

  6. ninique says:

“We would be willing to meet with them but not while they continue to inch toward nuclear weapons under the cover of talks,” she told the group, a pro-Israel lobby known by its acronym, Aipac. “The real question isn’t why won’t the Bush administration talk to Iran. The real question is why won’t Iran talk to us.”

the won’t talk to you because you’re all a bunch of warmongering mobsters.

Let’s hope and pray the ‘Liberal Media’ actually carries this story! 9. texaslady says:

You know if there is a grand plan to help Israel, and a trigger was needed it certainly makes the theory of Israel mafia pulling off 9/11 more plausible. Sometimes the tinhats have a strong point. It still makes me wonder why bush refused to testify under oath at the 9/11 Commission.

  10. blackpoll says:

Wasn’t Olmert asked to step down last week because of corruption allegations?

  17. Cufford says:

Obviously, this is code for time running out on the Bush Presidency. Once Obama takes over, bombing Iran is likely not going to happen. So hurry up and bomb before Bush that possibility ends with a change of presidents.

  18. The Shadow says:

This proves that Olmert is trying to avoid responsibility for his bribery case and Bush is trying to do this to help John McCain win. These two are lower than an earth worm for wanting to put US Airmen in harms way for political reasons. If the American people allow this to take place our country will be denounced around the world and we will suffer because of it. This man should have never been elected and he doesn’t care about the troops who would have to carry out his political attack. He is beneath contempt for entertaining even a thought about doing something so stupid. Besides the fact that it would lead to the increase possibility of another terrorist attack not to mention extremely higher gas prices. If the American people think $4.00 a gallon is high how about $10.00 a gallon after the oil is stopped in the Persian Gulf.

  19. Subroutine says:

Sure….Olmert would love an Iranian attack to deflect attention away from the bribery charges he’s facing.

  20. texaslady says:

  23. Buckie Boy says:

Makes you wonder about September/October, will this criminal president actually try and bomb Iran and then call off the election because of Russia and China threatening to attack us because of an attack on their oil supplier?

I wouldn’t put it past him, I frankly don’t see him leaving the WH without kicking and screaming all the way.

  24. liberal traitor says:

I’m an Obama supporter, but I must bring this up because it shows just how similar Hillary, Barack, and John all are, and that we cannot put all our hopes in the Presidency:

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080604.wobama0604/BNStory/International/home

It scares me to think that we had a choice between 3 Israel Lobby presidents (now it’s down to 2). My hope is that with Obama as president, we will have a Prez who will obey the will of Congress (i.e. the PEOPLE) and that we can avoid a war with Iran (to please Israel) unless Bushie starts it first…

  25. RantingTommy says:

That anyone is shocked that, after two oil men took over the country, gas more than doubled in price, is…well….

    shocking.

  26. liberal traitor says:

    texaslady,
Of course. Eisenhower said something to that effect (many things related as well), but I cannot remember the quote just now. Something along the lines of a true soldier despises war as he has actually seen its horrors…that’s not even close to literal I don’t think, but you get the drift.

  27. trollsbwild says:

Olmert should be in no position to shove this down our throats. He is under investigation for corruption and may soon be thrown out of office. Bush SHOULDalso not be in a position to decide on this issue. His only deterrent seems to be the threat of Congress stating there will be impeachment hearings if he bombs Iran.
The two ot them should be talking about who they are going to hire as their lawyers for upcoming criminal trials.

  28. ninique says:

    yey! good one!

  29. RantingTommy says:

If you look at most Bushco decisions from the angle of increasing the price of oil/gas, everything they have done makes perfect sense:

    1. Invade Iraq – stop Iraqi oil from getting to the market while using up a giant pile of oil and gas in the process

    2. Saber rattle with EVERY oil producing nation in the world, not just the middle east, sans Canada, driving the price even higher

    3. Deliberately devalue the dollar so as to make oil and gas even MORE expensive

    4. Defend oil companies for extorting record profits from record prices

    think about it

It’s a good thing that the USA is not a member of the ICC…

Howard accused of war crimes over Iraq troop deployment
A legal brief has been sent to the International Criminal Court (ICC) alleging former prime minister John Howard committed a war crime by sending troops to Iraq.

A loose alliance of peace activists, lawyers, academics and politicians is behind the brief, organised by the ICC Action group in Melbourne.

Organiser Glen Floyd says Mr Howard should be held accountable for sending troops to a war not sanctioned by the United Nations.

“We have produced a 52-page brief of evidence which states to the chief prosecutor of the criminal court that we allege John Howard’s actions are war crimes under article 8 of the Rome Statute,” he said.

Democrats Senator Lyn Allison says the legal brief sent to the ICC is justified.

Senator Allison, who is one of several eminent people supporting the move, says accountability is important.

“This action has been taken to hold those accountable for their action, so it’s essentially our prime minister – he was the one at the time [who] was the executive of government, made the decision,” she said.

‘It wasn’t put to the Parliament and as we all know, it turned out to be unjustified.”

A similar brief has been sent by a group from the United Kingdom regarding former prime minister Tony Blair. The United States is not a signatory to the court.

    IF Howard if found guilty…
What does that make the man who’s orders Howard was following?

Now, if Bush agrees to attack Iran for Israel, who’s the Howard now? Damn, the USA needs to be a member of the ICC…

    There is absentia…

An airstrike against Iran (which is really all we could manage at this point) wouldn’t hurt the Iranians too terribly but would cause the hardliners popularity numbers to shoot through the roof! Remember Bush’s numbers after 9/11?
So we look like arrogant imbeciles, furhter de-stabilize an unstable situation, rally the Iranian people around the mullahs, and get little or nothing in return…
Why would we bomb Iran again, oh yeah I forgot- Bush’s honor is at stake!

    **********************************************************

Let’s see…which was the third country which Bush named as part of the “Axis of Evil”? Oh, that’s right…I remember now.

    North Korea.

this would be the same North Korea, would it not, which at least during Bush’s first term in office was giving off clear signals of an active nuclear weapons program?? Possessed existing missile technology (albeit short-range), received nuclear technology from Pakistan in 1997, withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003, kicked the UN inspectors out of the country and dismantled their monitoring equipment not long thereafter, supposedly resumed uranium processing from spent fuel rods, and claims to have completed a successful nuclear test in 2006. Yet we never attacked them — in fact, the multi-lateral talks i which we’ve engaged them (”meeting with the enemy”, anyone?) actually seem to have been effective in persuading them to stand down. Now why did we never attack them, I wonder — or even rattle our saber even half as hard against them as we did against Iraq and have against Iran?

Well, the fact that North Korea doesn’t have that much in terms of any resources that we might want — whereas Iran and Iraq are sitting on two of the world’s five largest proven oil reserves (according to figures from our own government) — might have a teensy bit to do with that. Admittedly, the fact that China is right across the border from North Korea and has been their sometime ally in the past (i.e., the Korean War) might have something to do with it as well. I doubt that China would have taken it all kindly if the US had launched on attack that close to their front porch. China is a country we don’t really want to mess with right now — and especially not in light of the fact that we’re borrowing money from them to pay for the War In Iraq.

Sorry, Rogers…TRY. AGAIN. You keep pitching ‘em, and I keep hitting ‘em!

#65 I wonder if there would be rioting ? So many Americans are ok with another invasion as long as it doesn’t involve their family or their living standards. I have lost my faith that the American public care about other people’s lives. At least in the 60’s people got angry with the corrupt Nixon government. Where is the anger now ?

You have a point, but I think the American public is truly fed up being lied to, especially about things such as war. You are correct that most Americans can name the emcee on American Idol quicker than they can identfy the Sec of Defense (Gates) or Dir. of the CIA (Komrade Hayden), but I stil believe they have their fill of the neocon con-job.

I am hoping I am correct in this thinking.

Bush cares not what is good for America or his reputation. He answers to a different Father, hasn’t he said?

    Deluded fck.

What is a proper response to a maniac at the wheel? If Congress won’t shackle the bastard by impeachment, how can we stop him from doing what he thinks will clear the way for Jesus’ return?

Soory Tina, we Do need another hero.

not a bad idea though, peace…

  85. katy says:

  86. Keltoi says:

Here is a quote from Ahmindinjad earlier:

“Whoever wins the elections, I’m sure that the United States will change, it will have a different approach,” the Iranian leader told the Italian daily La Repubblica.

“The United States will have a reduced sphere of influence in the world,” he predicted, adding: “The new president will have to respond to the real demands of the American people: 40 million American citizens do not have health insurance, the victims of the New Orleans hurricane still have no homes.”

I am always amused when foreign leaders say things like “40 million Americans do not have health insurance” as if he gives a damn or his people actually DO have health insurance, or freedom of speech, or political rights, you name it. Kinda like there are no gay people in Iran.

Well, the other good sign in this is I really doubt Caroline is going to recommend a reptile like Hillary for VP. All the things that moved her to endorse Obama would block her from recommending Hillary for the ticket, I would think. She is a true idealist, the antithesis of the Clintons.

Oh, it doesn’t, particularly, I am not trying to be especially Trollish, there was just a fairly long talk on a thread yesterday about who Al-Maliki would prefer as the next President and we were talking about how hard it was to see through to the truth of their politics. Comments like Achmadidnjad’s just reveal they don’t understand us very well, either.

  91. sacopenapa says:

I was going to make a coment, but I can see people here (the majority has common sense). I liked very much the coment on cell mates, Bush and Olmert and Rice next door!!!!
We can tell Bush he can bomb Iran if, and only if he can name 3 Middle East Presidents names, 3 European presidents names and 3 South American presidents names (Uribe does not count). Then we would be safe!

  92. texaslady says:

Keltoi what is the difference between Achmadidnajad and bush/cheney ? They both sell out their people for selfish means, they use any tool to maintain their power, ie. religion. At least Achie is honest about his corruptness while bushie pretends to you and his dwindling supporters he has your best interests at heart. As to comparing Hillary to a reptile she is still better than bushie/cheney,rice, well the list could go on and on.

James Besser reports in the New York Jewish Week about the launch of a new political action committee aimed at supporting dovish congressional candidates — and, in Britain’s Prospect magazine, Gershom Gorenberg says that’s a good thing.

Wonder if any investigative journalists has the backbone to ask bushie if he knows how many kids have died for his war today ? About 4090 people who are loved, people that believed.

  98. Leftside Annie says:

Keltoi – IMO, the remarks from Ahmadinejhad that you posted show that he’s very astute.

    Just because he’s a hardline Islamist doesn’t mean he’s stupid. He isn’t.

He’s walking a very delicate line between the rabid mullahs, the secular Iranians, the new Iraq, and the warmongering eejit at the helm of America who keeps threatening to wipe IRAN off the map.

Doing it pretty well, too, from what I can tell.

Simplistic black-and-white crap is for Republicans.

Oh – you *are* a Republican. Ooops. My bad.

  99. Sachem says:

Last night I attended a Nation Institute event True Crimes: the Untold Story behind the Devastation of Iraq moderated by Seymour Hersh. Hedges, Al-Arian and Scahill were all very articulate about the realities of this war and the privatization of the military. After several questions from the audience about these topics, the audience became restless and started to call out for addressing the plans to bomb Iran.

Hersh did not want to go there, siting professional obligations regarding upcoming work, but he was pushed by the audience. He spoke of the present Israeli administration and the talks with Syria (moderated by Turkey?). Essentially, he said that by separating “Syria from the herd”, this would create a Sunni v Shia dynamic that would set up the scenario for the attack. He was reticent about scooping himself but his profound body language spoke volumes to those of us who have observed him even casually over the years. What he did say was:

“No Four Star General can stop Cheney”

The attack may come at a time when it is most useful to boost McCain’s faltering candidacy.

“This administration will be lethal until 11:59 (am) on January 20th”

And with his head in his hand, he said (paraphrase), “Never in the history of our country have we faced anything like this. Never.”

I can tell you there was a series of “holy shit” moments for the several hundred people in the audience. It felt like a bullet we thought we’d dodged did a u-turn in mid-air and is now headed back at us.

  100. texaslady says:

Mr. Hersch is to be deeply respected and has been correct many times. Where is the sanity among anyone in this White House ?

  101. texaslady says:

Simplistic black-and-white crap is for Republicans.

Oh – you *are* a Republican. Ooops. My bad.

    Meanie.

What kind of a Republican would buy and read a book by Naomi Wolfe entitled The End of America that was recommended to him by someone whose appellative was “Leftside” that he met on the blog for the Center for American Progress, hmmmm?

And I disagree with your assessment of Achies grasp on our politics. He gets a headline, he spouts it out…it actually reminded me a lot of the Al Qaeda tape where they referenced the housing market. Just rings hollow.

I never said the man was stupid, but trying to insert himself in our politics in anyway certainly is. He wants Obama to win, to the extent he makes that known he hurts Obama. I am sure O would want him to shush.

  103. Rowan Berkeley says:

JSTreet is pro-peace to a certain extent, it’s true, but it’s still pretty muscular. some people exaggerate the degree of real opposition to AIPAC that exists in the US Jewish organisations. Americans for Peace Now, for instance, still have a representative on AIPAC’s executive committee:

It’s sad and dangerous that thugs run both the United States and Israel. I remember the good old days when we were the good guys. Leastwise, the United States. Now the Zionists have dragged our leaders into their psychotic mind-think.
