McCain Falsely Claims He Has ‘Supported Every Investigation’ Into Katrina Failures

Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) held one of his town hall meetings in Baton Rouge, LA. During this event, a reporter from the CBS station in New Orleans pressed the senator on his sordid Katrina record, asking him why he “voted twice against the creation of a commission to investigate the levee failures in New Orleans.”

McCain quickly responded that he has supported “every investigation” into the levee failures, even though he then admitted that he wasn’t aware of the votes the reporter referenced:

I’ve supported every investigation and ways of finding out what caused the tragedy. I’ve been here to New Orleans. I’ve met with people on the ground. I’ve met with the governor. I’m not familiar with exactly what you said, but I’ve been as active as anybody in efforts to restore the city.

I also voted against one of the bills that came down that was loaded with pork barrel projects that had nothing to do with New Orleans too. It had billions for projects and programs that had nothing to do with the recovery of the city of New Orleans.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/06/mccainlevee4233.320.240.flv]

In the past, McCain has actually bragged about opposing the levee commission. “[T]here have been many investigations taking place – the causes are well known,” he said in April, adding he thought most people in America know “what caused that mismanagement.” Additionally, he opposed a 2006 spending bill “that would have provided $28 billion in hurricane relief, and legislation that would have extended unemployment and Medicaid benefits to hurricane victims for several months.”

McCain also tried to establish his Katrina record by bragging, “I’ve been here to New Orleans. I’ve met with people on the ground.” But until traveling there one month ago, McCain had “made just one public tour of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina touched down in August 2005.”

Evidently, rebuilding after Katrina is just more unnecessary pork.

Digg It!

Transcript:

REPORTER: Senator, Maya Rodriguez at the CBS station out of New Orleans. My understanding is you have voted twice against the creation of a commission to investigate the levee failures in New Orleans. And my question is, why have you voted against that?

McCAIN: I’ve supported every investigation and ways of finding out what caused the tragedy.

So I don’t know exactly what you are describing at this moment, but I am proud of my record of support, meeting with women of the storm, being here, doing everything I can.

The “EVERY” McTrina Failure means “EVERY” one he has supported, not every single piece… It’s semantic details.

This is why McSpeak gets away with these obvious blunders…
Because the next day, he can claim to have meant something different.

  10. spencers mom says:

You can’t really say he “falsely claims” because it’s just another side of a issue that he hasn’t yet said he’s supported all along.

Here’s an exercise – can anyone present any issue that McSame has never waivered on? We can rule out campaign finance (he’s facing charges) and torture, support for the troops, global warming, and the list goes on, but please name one single issue where he hasn’t found politically expedient double speak.

The right side treats the good citizens of NOLA as pariahs. The good folks in that city and state vote almost exclusively Dem, and that is why they get bupkis from the administration. Them right side makes no apologies for their awful treatment of these American citizens. They don’t vote for us, so screw ‘um! That is another example of the divided legacy the bush administration. History will treat this time in America with absolute horror.

BTW, they found two more bodies last week in a housing project. They drowned during the floods, and they just found them!

  12. Paul W says:

Just another example of the right wing’s attitude toward government. When it comes to supporting big business nothing is held back, American lives, the national treasury, nothing. But when it comes to supporting everyday Americans in their time of need, it’s just “pork.”

  15. JMOHR says:

But will the press follow up with exposing McCain’s lies or senior moments. This is becoming comical. Every day we find where he makes a 180 degree turn and then denies doing it. His support of the Webb GI Bill of Rights (Yeah) and comment of having won the highest award of every veteran’s organization. His flip flop on taxes. Yet he makes a center piece of his steadfast maverick status. It needs to be exposed. Either this guy is nothing more than a sleazy liar or has a serious senility problem.

Admit it grampy, you could care less about New Orleans, it’s just another pander bear moment for you.

    What Katrina investigations?

Thats why George McLieberman was tapped as the Homeland Committee Chairman, so there would be NO substantive investigation into the FAILURE of the BUSH Administrations non-response to Katrina. Remember he promised Afican-American voters in CT that he would get to the bottom of what happened or what didn’t happen, after he LOST to Ned Lamont.

But a funny thing happened, in return for runnung as an (I)-Israel and getting massive Repuppetcan support, he would ask for that spot and do NOTHING about Katrina and he has done just that NOTHING!!

And John McBush has been right there doing nothing with him. It is time for the gloves to come off against this fraud of a “Maverick”. And know he reminds me nothing of my Uncles or Grand-Father, they have/had way more sense and a grasp of whats going on in the world than he does.

Sorry StratRat…the comment is a dig at TP for ignoring the NEWS story that Obama clinched the (presumptive) nomination and their subsequent explanation that they don’t cover that type of thing and they only cover the issues. Others have criticized TP for being Pro Hillary, and if they are going to point out lies, half-truths, and inconsistencies promulgated by the candidates for the POTUS, I was wondering if that same standard was being held to Clinton. 37. Tired of being lied to says:

Mac can’t distinguish between the world he lives and who he is, and the person he thinks he is, or wishes he was.

Perhaps he sees now that many of the things he actually did, and the votes he cast, were not right (but were the right’s agenda), versus what he really should have done so that now he could make those claims. Now he sees that what he claims he did looks better for someone who is running for the presidency than what he actually did.

How do these people, like McCain, look themselves in the mirror each morning without throwing up?

  38. pete says:

May I answer “whats the point?” America can answer to all kinds of world crisis except when it happens in our own backyard. Trucks brought food they couldn’t take people out?
bush was NOTIFIED by a memo PRIOR to the storm hitting that Blanco wanted and needed help. bush had no time for New Orleans but could party with McCain and strum a guitar while New Orleans was flooding. And you still support this derilict in office ?
Or what about Cheney getting right down to make certain the oil interests were protected, or Haliburton getting some more no bid contracts. The list goes on and on, your administration let you drown and still has done nothing to help New Orleans get back. The good people are building the city up by themselves.

#46 – We could not believe when the Netherlands offered to send Engineers over to help rebuild the levees and were turned down ! Or how about refusing aid from Cuba, because they are communists but of course we are BFF with China, who are communists. The list goes on and on and is sickening about the way this government let the people down. I won’t even address the trailers that are making people sick, or the ones rotting in a field in Arkansas, or what about the trucks of ice that NEVER got to the people, but the taxpayers paid for them. That was a friend of Jeb’s that got that deal. Jebs old business buddy was in charge of the faulty pumps that are now in the levee system.

Yeah, Prytonia, you just go down and shake ole bushies hand for all the wonderful help he has given New ORleans.

  45. texaslady says:

Prtonia check out memos on katrina, funny but the one asking for help is BEFORE the flooding from Blanco. You are letting your republican loyalty overcome reality. And where were the National Guard and equiptment ? In IRAQ we had to borrow from other states. Nice going bushie.

  49. texaslady says:

Oh and just so you know, wages were not as the government said they would be, equal to going wage, they were way lower and qualified people could take or leave it. Again, think what you want, those of us who know, know the truth.

  50. texaslady says:

Yes actually it was for FEMA the engineer worked for and the head was turning locals away and allowing outsiders to charge more doing the same. As for electricians certainly not union wage how about $8.00 for Journeyman pay. The going wage is $20-25 in the South. And I will pass on to friends the Burger King paying $12.00 they certainly haven’t heard of it in fact one laughed outloud just now when I relayed your comments.

Sorry Prytania by the NYT quoting the WH disagrees with you:

“WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 – President Bush is to pledge in an address to the nation from New Orleans on Thursday night that the federal government . . . Republicans said Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff and Mr. Bush’s chief political adviser, was in charge of the reconstruction effort, which reaches across many agencies of government and includes the direct involvement of Alphonso R. Jackson, secretary of housing and urban development.” Sept 15,2005

But like most RepubliCON trolls don’t beleive any facts presented that MIGHT no support the infallibility of this FAILED Administration . . .

  54. texaslady says:

August 29th Blanco sends memo to bush “we need everything you have got.” FEMA promises 500 buses, nothing came.
Prytonia needs to avail himself to memos made public and timelines before assigning blame. Although I would start with pumps not adequate at the levees which is still a factor. Pumps purchased from Jeb’s business friend.

  55. Jackie says:

McCain will say anything for a vote, next he’ll say his cousin is African American. What happen to the Katrina victims is a spot on the USA. Americans have watched Third World Countries beiing treated poorly and even dying without help. Now for many Americans who watched the continued news coverage we got to see Americans die live on TV as our Law Makers and White House did nothing. It was other countries and American people who went to help. It was sad to see Bush turn away help from others in the hour of need for the Katrina victims. Like most things in American history this will be added.
