DeLay On Obama: ‘Unless He Proves Me Wrong, He Is A Marxist’
On right-winger Mike Gallagher’s radio show today, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), who is currently facing charges of money laundering and conspiracy to launder money, launched a fringe attack on Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) by claiming that he is a Marxist. “I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist,” DeLay declared.
Gallagher couldn’t agree more, saying “that’s what he is”:
GALLAGHER: Yeah, that’s, we hear that everyday. Congressman, every day someone will say to me, and I’ve said it, it’s as if this were a guy who’s desperately trying to cover up what seems to be the kind of old school Marxist, radical liberal failed ideology.
DELAY: Absolutely.
GALLAGHER: That’s what he is.
DELAY: No doubt about it.

The laughable Marxist charge is not a new attack from the right.
In April, after Obama made his now-infamous “bitter” remarks, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol claimed in his New York Times column that it was a reiteration of “Marx’s famous statement about religion.” Karl Rove agreed, calling the comments “almost Marxian.”
Perhaps worse, Obama’s Senate colleague, Joe Lieberman (I-CT), told Fox News Radio that it was “a good question” to ask if Obama is “a Marxist,” though he said he would “hesitate” to call him one himself.

GALLAGHER: There are reports of dissent within the Obama camp, that they don’t want to have a Clinton on the ticket. Listen, if their pride gets in the way, because I’m with ya, I think that they ought to recognize what she could do for them. But if they reject her, I think John McCain — that’s going to be good news for Sen. McCain.
DELAY: Oh I think it’s good news for Sen. McCain, the other weakness that he [Obama] has is that nobody knows him. And if McCain does not define him as what he is — hey, I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist.
GALLAGHER: Yeah, that’s, we hear that everyday. Congressman, every day someone will say to me, and I’ve said it, it’s as if this were a guy who’s desperately trying to cover up what seems to be the kind of old school Marxist, radical liberal failed ideology.

After all, like all philosophers, he didn’t invent the philosophy, he merely described it and speculated about what it could accomplish. Marxist communism is, on paper, a simple, elegant philosophy for ants. Unfortunately it doesn’t work except briefly or on a very limited scale.
Humans don’t make very good ants. That’s why there has never been a “Marxist State” in the accurate sense of the term. Most of those so identified have been dictatorships which misrepresented Marx’s views to maintain rigid control. And even the smaller enclaves which more closely approximate Marx’s “utopia of the proletariat” have proven short lived.

But this is nothing new. Republicans have employed name-calling for decades. Remember when anyone they didn’t like was a “commie”? Nixon even disparaged Helen Gahagan Douglas, his opponent in a Senate race, as “pink right down to her underwear.”
They don’t seem to use “commie” anymore — they’ve evolved to “Marxist” and “socialist”. Not much change, really — especially when you consider that what they’re really wanting to communicate is the message that “he/she isn’t as ‘American’ as you and I are” — they don’t even bother learning the literal meaning of the words.

Frankly, Tom Delay and his like-minded GOPers (who see a communist plot behind every shrub) wouldn’t know a real Marxist if he walked up and kicked him square in the ass!! They have NO IDEA what “Marxism” is. Yet they know that decades of anti-Soviet propaganda has prepared the minds of Americans to immediately have a knee-jerk negative reaction to any mention of Marxism, socialism, communism, etc.
Is Obama a socialist? It doesn’t look that way to me. Is he calling for a nationalized healthcare system? No. Is he calling for the immediate seizure and nationalization of energy companies and their properties? No. Has he called for 100% taxation for incomes over $500,000.00 per year? No.
But we already have socialist elements ingrained into our society and don’t realize it. Social Security and the whole idea of the “social safety net” are based on socialist ideology. Our military - with its policy of accepting practically anyone without regard to class, race, etc. - and its inherent meritocracy, its generous compensation benefits and retirement is of a purely socialist model. We all enjoy the beauty of our national and state parks, many of which have buildings and other amenities that were built by the Works Progress Administration following the Republican Great Depression of 1929. This was part of FDR’s New Deal and it put many, many people back to work and ultimately created national assets that we all hold in common. It was a move towards socialism that rebuilt our economy, and it was without doubt part of the successes of FDR’s time as president.
The truth is that America needs to head in a more socialist direction. Unbridled capitalism has slowly but surely eroded our economy, taken jobs away from Americans and given them to foreigners who were willing to work for less money, corrupted and polluted our political system, and many capitalist enterprises are responsible for much of the environmental damage that we’re only now beginning to address. America should follow the middle path between the extremes of left and right. We need to develop our own, uniquely American form of democratic socialism. We can do much better, working together.

Obama as a Marxist, I went to Dictionary.com to see just what the textbook definition of a Marxist is. When the definitions came up, I scrolled down to the Encyclopedia Britannica link and clicked on Marxist. I was taken here. Right under Topics/Text were two Google Ads — the second one was “Obama for President” and linked to BarackObama.com. Did the Obama campaign really post this Google ad using “Marxist” as a keyword? Or did someone with an anti-Obama bent (or perhaps a warped sense of humor) do it?
