Congressional Black Caucus Foundation receives racist Obama t-shirt in the mail.»

On Wednesday, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) received an offensive t-shirt in the mail; the shirt had “a cartoon image of Curious George, the beloved children’s character, with a paper bag over his head holding a sign that says ‘A Truth We Can Believe in ‘08!!!’ written underneath.” The Washington Post describes the back of the shirt:

obamat.gif The back of the shirt lists several African American organizations. … It prints the United Nations’ definition of “racial discrimination” and states, underneath the listing of all the black organizations, “Who is really causing the Racial Division.

The t-shirt also says: “There are over 1,000 African American, Hispanic and other minority organizations in America. How many white organizations can you find? Or can you imagine what would happen every time one was made?” Mingled with the listing of the numerous black organizations is the Ku Klux Klan and two Hispanic groups.

CBCF president Elsie Scott was disturbed by the image of Curious George with a bag over his head, which reminded her of a lynching. Recently, other controversial t-shirts featuring Curious George and Obama ‘08 logos have also appeared.

I look at the image and see the current Chimp in Chief (George) finally coming to grips with reality, and supporting the truth for a change…

(He’s embarrassed of his abject failure as a leader of the free world, that’s why he has the bag over his head)

Yes, the fringe looneys will have a field day. But come out of their hiding places? Not a chance. Anonymity is their stock in trade. I expect the internet will be used a good bit by these kooks.

I’m waiting for the shoe to drop, so I wonder if the “swiftboat” tactic the neocons will attempt in 2008, will be the race card. If so, I don’t fear that Obama will have a problem handling it. In fact it might well work to his advantage. I have been very impressed at how well he has handled the attacks thrown against him during the primary.

The miscreants and racists of this nation will never be changed — their numbers will dwindle and they will eventually die off. Unfortunately that is the best we can hope for.

    _____________________________________________

What these racists don’t understand (or perhaps they do understand and just choose to ignore) is that there are MANY “white” organizations in this country. Only that’s not what they’re called. There are Swedish clubs, Sons of Norway, Irish groups, Italian groups, Scottish clubs, Turkish organizations, etc. These groups are about celebrating the traditions and culture of one’s ethnicity — just as African-American and Hispanic groups are. Most of these groups don’t bar people not of the ethnic group celebrated by the organization, but there’s not usually a line of these people banging at the door to get in.

Now, ANY group that gets together for the express purpose of hating all others not part of the group deserves to be condemned — black, white, or whatever. I would be interested to know how many of these groups listed on the t-shirt actually fall in this category.

    For Truth

I agree. Great advances were made during the Clinton years in terms of racial acceptance. Up until 9/11, Muslims were looked upon (albeit looked down upon) as more of a curiosity, rather than a threat.
Overnight the Bush/Cheney Fear Machine turned the whole of Islam into the ultimate bogey man. Because of the actions of a splinter group of radical extremists (initially supported and trained by the CIA)who are little different from the corporate militarists they initially fought for. Now the least little connection, whether it be a name, or country of origin, or darkness of skin color is enough to whip the craven, fearful, an ignorant by choice segment of the American populace into a froth of spittle. On television.
    It will get ugly.
Yet America as a majority will turn away from the ugliness, and the purveyors of the distortions and the maliciousness will find themselves out on the dung pile.

  27. Nevar Says:

As an indicator of how entrenched the fear factor has become, the first response I get from others (average age, lets say late 20’s) when I discuss Obama as President, is the fear that he would be assassinated.
I counter with: “Don’t you feel how sad that is, that fear has been so implanted in your psyche it paralyzes your willingness to support a higher good for all?”
followed by: “Focus on the positive aspect of courage, and an unwillingness to allow that kind of evil to manifest itself.”

We can do this, people. With mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical strength entwined as one, America will emerge from this nightmare and regain it’s place in the world as a beacon of hope for justice, human rights, and a true voice for all people.

I would hazard a guess that the christian world harbors an equal quotient of fear and loathing and injustice.
As well as a pure and unadulterated falsehood.

The Judeo-Christian religion is accountable for more death, destruction, persecution and torture than any other single organized religion.

Oh, and if you are referring to the dog as being a nuisance, well, I will wholeheartedly go along with that.

Oh gawd. It’s beyond “white guilt.” It’s more like the youth has taken away the old whiteman’s sting. Go on and feel guilty if one sees racist and does nothing. It’s ones lost if one chooses to stay behind aka conservatism.

Thank God I was raised on military bases. All kind of mixed love available, the children proved that.

  45. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

Surprised? No, not at all. Racists are cowards and whoever sent the tee shirt is a coward. They didn’t even have the courage to say who sent the shirt. Bet this racist also dodged fighting in Iraq.

  46. Bluestocking Says:

I think I can claim to have called this one. Although I can’t remember whether I said this on ThinkProgress or some other site, I distinctly remember posting a message some time ago to the effect that a lot of covert racism would start coming out of hiding into the light of day if Obama became the Democratic Party nominee — frankly, I think it was inevitable. (Yes, I realize that the T-shirt would have to have been mailed to the Congressional Black Caucus before Obama was named as the presumptive Democratic nominee in order for them to receive it on Wednesday — but what seems likely is that whoever mailed this saw the handwriting on the wall and posted it in advance with the presumption that this would be the result.)

As positive as I think it is for Obama to have been named the presumptive Democratic Party nominee, the fact nevertheless remains that racism is by no means dead in this country and that there are more than a few people — including some who may not be able to consciously acknowledge this even to themselves — who see things very differently. As much as I hate to say it, the possibility can’t be ruled out that we will be seeing more of this sort of thing and that it may get even uglier between now and November. At least some comfort can be found in the knowledge that this only shows just how afraid people like this are of Obama and that they perceive him to be a serious threat to a victory for McCain.

It probably isn’t, and it is coming from “our side” of the fence. It is necessary to confront this type of crap rather than deny that it is out there. I expect the trolls and the unholy rest will be pointing to this kind of stuff as representative of the Progressive folks.

This was in today’s Seattle PI:

The most momentous event in the history of the Washington State Republican Party happened in Spokane last weekend.

On May 31, the delegates of the Washington State Republican Convention made the historic decision to declare the Washington state GOP to be the official anti-war party for our state. I will be forever grateful that I had the privilege to be among those who voted for the following resolution:

“Therefore be it resolved that the Republican Party should support formal declarations of war passed by the House of Representatives and repudiate ‘authorizations to us force’ or any other delegation of war declaration powers to any other body.”

The Washington State Republican Party shall no longer entrust our country’s honor, the lives of our soldiers and our international reputation to shadowy neocons and political operatives of dubious loyalty. If our country is to go to war, Congress must make that decision and must debate that decision.

We repudiate the lies of Bush. We reject the lie that is Iraq. We want our soldiers home alive and we want them home now. By passing this resolution, we have made the first step in restoring our Constitution.

    The revolution has begun!

    Yea sure…

Would it be worth tracing it forensically, just to win arguments and stuff?

  101. Tweedster Says:

There will be heavy “swiftboating” of this type towards Obama. The point that transcends the argument of racial division and who or what is causing it, is the fact that it should be openly addressed and rationally discussed. Since it is such a sensitive and emotionally charged subject it is one of the easiest things (and cheapest) to try to exploit by instigating the argument at that level.

I am confident that Obama will overcome the “criticisms” of the “concerned” fringe in the Presidential election.

    My God I hope so.

  103. Merlin Says:

Obama was raised with racism and bigotry and has had his whole life to understand it and come to grips with it. And in my view he has! As opposed to McBush, he is calm when attacked and under pressure. You will not hear him angrily using the “C” word or the “F” word, as has been done. I would love to have been a fly on the wall as he pulled Lieberman into the corner by the hand(shake which he did not let go of). Reports indicate (body language etc.) he overpowered him. “Walk softly but carry a big stick” applies to his approach. I feel his strength rather than see it.

Well guess what boys, white men do it every freakin’ day. They can dish it out but they can’t take it can they.

    – and you can still see Pat Buchanan lurking not too far behind the most productive antiwar sites on the web, using an ad hoc alliance which seems to encompass everyone from Ron Paul to Karen Kwiatkowski to CounterPunch - despite their Tim Wise article calling Buchanan out last week, even CounterPunch generally encourage this ad hoc alliance, but if the Left lets the so-called ‘Old Right’ corner the antiwar market, they will trap it in a no-win false opposition, whereby Obama represents anti-racism and pro-war, whereas they themselves represent pro-racism and anti-war, and you will be told you can’t have both. It’s a set-up, one that the ‘Old Right’ themselves would describe in any other context as ‘Hegelian’.

  119. Marie Says:

I am surprised at the number of white, suburban, middleclass kids who display racism in their speech and attitudes. Did the last generation, in an effort to give them a better life, do them a disservice by raising them in cooky-cutter neighborhoods with little contact with others from other backgrounds? Are they repeating the factless, baseless opinions of their elders without really thinking; are they just parrots - or are they that ignorant of the world in which they live? My own kids growing up had friends who expressed bigotry, inherited from their parents - and some remain ignorant.

Even so, there comes a time when people are of an age to be responsible for themselves, yet I often hear of well-educated young people who are extremely ignorant of important facts of history.

Parents - schools - society have failed.

I still hope that a successful black president will help to diminish the backward thinking that still permeates our society.

  121. Badger Says:

    dbadass,

You are absolutely right …today’s young people are, for the most part, information seekers, not information holders.

It’s a new version of ” why do I need to know arithmetic when I have a calculator?” Why need to know anything, when I can just google it??

Well…this incredible lack of historical perspective provides some evidence that google alone will not do. How can young people, or anyone, understand the current situation of “colored people” without understanding Jim Crow ?

I greatly admire how today’s youth does not see the world in racial terms. And I think the information technology available today will change the world..is changing the world.

But without some sense of History, how can people today understand the legitimate feelings of “former second class citizens?”

    Well this

My only point was that they are not without intellect. My beef is their incredibly limited knowledge of vocabulary.

  125. Exit Stage Left Says:

Here’s my take on the race awareness of the younger generation, from a personal perspective. I was born in NYC in 1953 to a blue-collar family. I am first generation American citizen on my Dad’s side and second generation on my Mom’s side. My Dad was (and is) a very racist and bigoted man. I grew up in a lily-white suburb hearing the words ni**er, sp*c, f*ggot, etc, on a daily basis. That being said, I’m happy to report I have been able to evolve in my adult life. I call myself a bleeding-heart liberal. My children, now 17 and 20 have grown up in an environment totally devoid of racial, ethnic or sexual slurs. When they were very young we moved from our lily-white NYC suburb to a racially/ethnically diverse area of Central Florida. My kids have grown up in neighborhoods with more blacks and hispanics than whites. Although they are aware that racism exists, they thankfully don’t have a racist bone in their bodies. I guess my point is this: at some point, it’s possible to break the chain of racism and bigotry. I’m happy to report my kids are as enthused about the possibility of an Obama presidency as I am. The best way to end racism, in my humble opinion, is for children to grow up in an environment of kindness and tolerance for all.

One last ironic note…My Dad (who was born in Switzerland and is a naturalized American citizen, as well as a life-long Democrat) told me recently that there is no way in hell he could vote for anyone with a foreign-sounding name like Obama.
I’m thinking he’ll be even less pleased to find out his granddaughter is gay.

  133. pete Says:

Very interesting comments people. I hope this doesn’t go to far off track.

I have been doing some reading about education and according to many theorists, mostly European and Asian, the American education system does it backwards. In brief:

It has been suggested that very young children should be allowed to explore in a less structured setting and encouraged to leave lesson plans. The three R’s should be taught incidentally as tools to explore. This approach allows kids to benefit from their short attention spans (information seeking) and keeps them interested until the discipline of age enables them to concentrate on the niceties (information holding)of math, grammar, science and history.

Of course none of it will work without a fundamental change in how much of society fears intellectualism. The growing Home”school” movement is downright frightening. How a high school grad, or dropout, can believe they are equipped to teach is beyond me. Hopefully with the aging and demise of the Moral Majority generation, we can have a re dedication to learning for learnings sake?

  134. dbadass Says:

    pete:
Homeschooling done right is so overwhelming that I have seen very few successful incidences. Usually those children are thrown back into the public or private ed system within a year or two, once the parents realize the realities. My mentor holds a phd from Dartmouth and his wife holds well beyond a MA and they both agree that this was the hardest thing they ever did and would not try it again.

  148. pete Says:

    I couldn’t agree more db.

I was encouraged/pushed to learn “adult stuff” from a very young age. And I received a lot of education in addition to school. (I think I set an unofficial record for cactus spines and received enough assorted stings that I developed serious allergies.) But, there is a very good reason that teaching is a respected, in some eras more than others, profession and children are sent to learn outside the home.

When I ran a restaurant, in a previous life, I had a couple of young home”schooled” gentlemen who worked for me. “Raising” them into functioning members of a staff was probably the most difficult, and rewarding, tasks of my life.

Thank providence their respective overbearing mothers realized it was time to let go. Both those young men went from being literally unable to hold a conversation without panic, to being competent to run the kitchen for my few days off. And they both say I had a lot to do with helping them adjust to life outside the nest. Both went on to college, careers and families; but I don’t know if they would have without mentoring. And I’ve met a few who never, apparently, manage to socialize. As problematic as public schools can be it’s still a pretty good model for preparing young citizens. And there aren’t really good substitutes for a somewhat structured “practice society”.

  149. dbadass Says:

Home schooling laws vary so much between states. How do we know if any child is being left behind? If I want to dress my kid in sweatshop abstinance garb and wrap them in the world’s largest confederate flag, can I claim it a curriculum?

  150. pete Says:

I think the major problems are; simple over protectiveness and inability of many parents to teach anything effectively. But, in some states one can call anything a “curriculum” for religious/philosophical reasons. And that’s where lack of training and lack of socializing get compounded by a contempt for “worldly” or “dangerous” knowledge. I really can’t think of a better way to ruin a child’s intellect. And as for “dangerous” knowledge, my dad had a saying that, “knowledge is only dangerous to the dangerously stupid”.
