Gas prices hit “a milestone mark” today, according to AAA, reaching “$4 a gallon for the first time.” The Average price for regular unleaded rose 1.7 cents to $4.005, up from Thursday’s record high of $3.989. Prices “are nearly 29% higher than the $3.105 average a year ago.”
$4.57 a gallon for regular in los angeles.

June 8th, 2008 at 10:23 amJust imagine, this time next month it’ll be $5 a gallon and we’ll be wishing for $4 a gallon gas while the oil tycoons stuff their cubbards with profits. Thank you Dictator Bush!

Oh, now, don’t forget those rubberstamps. Bush would have done little without their help.
“Conservative?” (now there’s a real misnomer.)
June 8th, 2008 at 10:34 amIt wasn’t more than 6 weeks ago and Bush hadn’t heard anyone talking about $4.00 a gallon and look at us now.
So tell me, why people still stand behind an administration that can’t see this coming? My 10 year old saw this coming.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:38 amThe relative price of gas is probably not as significant as the rate of increase. This will set up a wave of cost increases — not a ripple – throughout the rest of the marketplace for everything from food to clothing.
We are suffering the consequences of Darth Cheney’s secret energy task force — that shadowy group of oil executives whose only plan was apparently “lay pipelines across Afghanistan and go to Iraq and steal their oil”. Well, that sure didn’t work out very well.
This situation is yet another example of the utter emptiness and failure of GDumbya’s policies and leadership.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:39 amJust wondering…is this what Cheney and his energy task force secretly planned for in 2001.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:42 amFunny how nobody in the media has brought up that closed door energy meeting that Cheney had early on in the first term.
I’d like to know what was discussed considering the situation today.

June 8th, 2008 at 10:43 amI’m certain Cheney and his secret little club did not plan to have the cost of oil go up this drastically.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:51 amThey probably believed that their shock and awe tactic to seize Middle Eastern oil would succeed.
Now that they have spent so much of America’s blood, sweat and tears only to have failed; the oil companies, and all of their corporate minions, will pillage every dollar they can before Cheney leaves.
The corporo-militarist machine believes it can survive wholesale collapse of the economy and civil society. Bush and Cheney already have their tickets to their little enclaves.

Two months ago my son predicted $4/gal gas by Memorial Day. He was off by 2 weeks. He understands economics better than McRibs or Chimpy.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:53 amHey, everybody, I’ve got a great idea!
We all want gas prices lower, right?
Why don’t we put two oil men in charge of our government???
No, think about it, this will work: they can work with the industry, make things smoother for the oil companies — y’know, get rid of burdensome regulations and all that — and, if necessary, they can “jawbone” OPEC into lowering their prices.
How can it fail???
June 8th, 2008 at 10:54 amAt the rate things are going, regular will be 6$ a gallon by next spring. Yet Chimpy, Dead-Eye-Dick, and the rest of the member of the oval office gang don’t give a rat’s a**.
Gas prices are at a staggering rate, the U.S. dollar has become a global joke, we’re running the largest debt in the history of modern times, the economy not only is, but has been in a RECESSION for some time (Bush is such an idiot to not call it what it is), and the country is stuck in two wars with no end in sight and no exit strategy (yet these genocidal a-holes now want to attack Iran).
Come November, I’m voting for change. And no, that doesn’t mean McCain.

We should have a pool to predict how many days after Obama’s inauguration the repukes begin calling it a recession.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:57 amI’m guessing they won’t wait that long, it will be the day after the election.
June 8th, 2008 at 10:58 amIf the oil companies think this little stunt will force a re-thinking of drilling off the coast of Cali, they’re delusional. We all know that the oil companies have hundreds, if not thousands of wells in the US, that were capped because refining costs were too high in the 1970’s. Now, at today’s gas prices, those costs are relatively minor. It’s a scam to open up off-shore and ANWR drilling, nothing more.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:01 amAbsolutely. And it will be the “Obama Recession” before he’s even taken the oath of office. Since when does logic matter to the wingnuts?

June 8th, 2008 at 11:03 amWe should have a pool to predict how many days after Obama’s inauguration the repukes begin calling it a recession.
The time it takes won’t be measured in days; it will be measured in hours. And you can bet that the republican’ts will immediately call it “the Obama recession”. This will be such a relief for them. After all, “it’s Clinton’s fault” has gotten to be such a tired and worn-out phrase.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:03 amHere on the central California Coast we dream of the days of $4 gas. It’s $4.39 at the cheapest stations and up to $4.56.
Map of Iraq’s oil fields divided-up among oil companies from Cheney’s March 2001 Task Force:

June 8th, 2008 at 11:03 amI kind of feel sorry for the trolls. With Hillary’s concession, they got to learn a new phrase, and “Obama Did It™” doesn’t have the same punch as “Clinton Did It™”.

June 8th, 2008 at 11:07 amThis is as much a currency crisis, as it is an energy crisis.
Thanks to President Bush and the Republicans, the world and its investors have lost faith in the US Dollar.
We need a crash program to get electric cars on our roads…off the pumps and on to the grid.
Better Battery technology is now available, Auto workers are being layed off, plants are closing. America knows how to build electric cars.
During World War II, our industries pivoted quickly, from producing cars to producing tanks and liberty ships. We can do this.
This crisis will sink us, if we don’t act.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:09 amWe need a crash program to get electric cars on our roads
I don’t disagree with your proposal but that’s only half the battle. Then, we just need to figure out how Americans can afford to buy these electric cars in the midst of rising prices for everything else.

$4.27 a gallon
June 8th, 2008 at 11:24 amWith bush/cheney in charge, the oil companies know they can shoot the price up and nothing will be done about it. Possible reasons?
June 8th, 2008 at 11:25 amWow, that was simple. Why didn’t anyone else think of that?
Oh, yeah — because the world supply of oil is dwindling, and because Americans value sensitive environments that oil drilling could threaten, and because the world chain of supply is much more complex than most people imagine.
Oh, and we’re also already drilling all over the continent. But for some reason, while Bush is all hot to drill in ANWAR, he nixed the idea of drilling off the coast of Florida when his brother was the governor. Wonder why that is?
June 8th, 2008 at 11:25 amI’m guessing American industry, particularly the auto industry, was convinced by Cheney and his oily friends to carry on as usual, building gasoline powered vehicles, promising them that “we’ll get the oil for you, trust us….”
June 8th, 2008 at 11:25 amSeeing as how that didn’t work out so well, America has lost nearly a decade of advancement towards sustainable industry.
And the general populace will pay for the mess as Cheney scurries off to Dubai, and Bush stumbles off to Paraguay.
Not sure if Thompney is being sarcastic or not…
if so, forgive my effrontery and please accept a hearty “well done”!
June 8th, 2008 at 11:27 am“Oh, and we’re also already drilling all over the continent. But for some reason, while Bush is all hot to drill in ANWAR, he nixed the idea of drilling off the coast of Florida when his brother was the governor. Wonder why that is?”
There are too many wealthy retired Republicans on the Florida coasts, they don’t want their view spoiled.

$4 gas is knocking many canaries out in this economic coal mine.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:30 amPossible Reasons?
1. They can raise prices and make a lot of money and congress will only threaten to write a letter.
2. Possible Democratic control of the WH and congress could mean dimished profits and with Obama, no chance to sprerad $$ around to gain influence.
3. Outside chance to gain approval for drilling on every piece of Federal and privately owned land possible.
4. Greed.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:31 amTom,
We could finance these cars the same way the Goverment Finances houses…with a Govt. guaranteed FHA-like loan..repayed by the savings over time of cheaper electricity vs. skyrocketing Gasoline.
We won’t need every vehicle to be electric….just enough to cut demand significantly and pop the petroleum Bubble.
We do need to concern ourselves with the pressure electric transportation would put on the Nations electrical grid.
But his would force the infrastructure to develope more renewable energy….solar thermal in the Mojave desert, geothermal, and perhaps safe nuclear fusion like the polywell reactor. In any case, we have plenty of coal as a last resort..we just need to figure out how to mine and burn it without destroying our environment.
But we need to act Quickly, and Refute the Notion that the Govt. can’t do anything competently in the Public Interest.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:31 amAfter some study, I’ve concluded that Thompney is doing a bang-on parody of a brain-dead troll.
I admire the economy of the performance, and the accuracy of the portrayal.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:31 amGovernment regulation makes the price of gas skyrocket.
Since a barrel was $19 under Clinton and a gallon was 99 cents for seven years where I lived—-doesn’t that just blow away your little theory of regulation?
Or did Bush and Cheney bring in massive regulation?
June 8th, 2008 at 11:33 amVery astute observation ralph. I concur. I have two knawing at the bit to go see Kung Fu Panda so I will leave all of this in your more than capable hands

June 8th, 2008 at 11:35 amDrilling for oil in ANWR is less about the quantity of oil available there (relatively very little, by all accounts) and more about location.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:36 amANWR is the one small chunk of arctic coastline which will lend itself admirably as the site for an energy city to supply, distribute, and militarize the sea route across the Arctic.
The oil companies and their friends want global warming. The quicker the ice melts, the faster they can start drilling and shipping.
The best part is that the Republicans blame it on the Democratic majority Congress!

June 8th, 2008 at 11:42 amThompney = Mr Pee. The wornout tired old repuglycan talking points chatterbox.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:43 amOne thing that impacts the price of oil is Fed policy on money supply. We hear lots of talk about the Fed an interest rates but money supply is never mentioned. The broadest measure of money supply, M3, has been expanding at double-digit rates for 2-3 years. M3 is one of the factors driving down the value of the dollar. It financed the housing bubble and it is financing the bailout of financial institutions today. Until the Fed get real and pulls back on the inflationary policy on money supply our problems will only worsen. Ben Bernanke is falling into the same trap as Arthur Burns and that will lead to stagflation. Getting new Fed leadership should be one of the key components for electing Barack Obama in November as John McCain would name like minded people to that board and that would be a huge mistake.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:51 amI didn’t take you for a parody, HumpKnee, parodists tend to be creative.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:54 amThe price per barrel is going to keep going up because Israel keeps threatening war with Iran. They are making the current gas prices even worse.
Tom is absolutely right, we are going to get hit across the board on everything. We all thought $3.39 a gallon of milk is bad, that will probably be $4 before summer is over.
Hybrid cars in many areas are on back order by 6 to 9 months already. Many people are starting to plan for the next wave of rising gasoline prices. Mass Transporation is up also, that will save alot of money also. I haven’t seen the new report out yet, but in March the American People drove 11 million miles less. I bet April is going to be much higher.
June 8th, 2008 at 11:55 amOh, I’m sorry to hear that. The alternative explanation, of course, is that you’re not very bright. You have my sympathies.

The problem is Badger that those plants were making SUV’s and Hummers. I agree though that at least one of two could have been converted to producing more hybrid cars. There was a report on the news the other day that showed all the car lots with Hummers that weren’t selling, rows and rows of them. Those dealerships should have seen this coming, an started planning for the future.

June 8th, 2008 at 3:45 pmNot so long ago, Cheney told us “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter.”
Banking on Reagan’s “proof,” Cheney and his stooges proceeded to double the national debt while prosecuting a war of choice in Iraq. As a direct result of this tragically misguided “policy,” the US dollar has lost half of its value over the last eight years. This is the primary reason that gas prices have increased from $2 to $4/gallon.
Cheney has incontrovertibly, although quite unintentionally, debunked “Red Ink” Ronnie’s dictum. The simple truth is that deficits do matter.
Eight years without a national energy policy, coupled with tax cuts for wealthy and reckless deficit spending have not only bankrupted America, but have effectively doubled the price of gas.
Thanks Dick.
Thanks for tangible proof that Americans can no longer afford to vote for Republicans.

June 8th, 2008 at 5:23 pmThe price will keep going up. It’s a simple rule of supply and demand. In the last 20 years, the US has recorded a drop of 40% in its oil production, while demand/consumption has more than doubled in the same period. Emerging economies in Asia are also pushing demand even higher. Unfortunately, OPEC and other oil producing countries are not willing to produce enough to satisy the increased the demands. For so long as we have democrats and some republicans resisting even the most environmentally sound oil exploration, we should be prepared to pay through the nose. Bashing oil companies for their profits will not work when we have the US goverment making more money in gas taxes than all US oil companies combined.
June 8th, 2008 at 6:20 pm“Bashing oil companies for their profits will not work when we have the US goverment making more money in gas taxes than all US oil companies combined.”
Where is the gas tax money going? It doesn’t appear to be spent on roads and bridges, and funding the alternative transportation infrastructure we are going to need. Soon.
June 8th, 2008 at 6:27 pmMy guess most of it is being squandered in a failed attempt to acquire it from other peoples and places, while the oil companies profit.
why is a knoll I zing anything off limits? Damn this is sofa king we todd id
