After meeting with Bush, Olmert hints U.S. action against Iran is near.»

The Israeli press reported last week that during a recent meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was to urge President Bush to prepare an attack on Iran. The White House has not commented extensively on the meeting, but Israeli press are reporting today that Olmert has “hinted” that “U.S. action against Iran is imminent“:

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert hinted after his meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush Wednesday that U.S. action against Iran is imminent. While he avoided saying anything clear and specific on the matter, Olmert did mention a “timetable” and said action would take place before Bush leaves the White House.

We reached agreement on the need to take care of the Iranian threat,” Olmert said after the meeting. “I left with a lot less question marks [than I had entered with] regarding the means, the timetable restrictions and America’s resoluteness to deal with the problem.”

“George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on the matter before the end of his term in the White House,” Olmert reportedly said after his 90 minute long one-on-one meeting with the American Commander in Chief.

My only argument with this logic spewed by our elected Officials, is that this flies in the face of the lawlessness and criminal nature ALREADY on display. They have enough to hold the BushCo responsible for violating long standing principles and treaties. They have misused and mislead the Nation into a military blunder, making us less safe, NOT MORE!

    1) IF the Administration does attack Iran, it happens on our elected Officials watch. It isn’t like Iraq where these elected Officials had their heads up their asses. I mean, Bush hadn’t demonstrated a propensity to commit war crimes by then.

    2) That our elected Officials prefer to NOT reign in an out-of-control administration is sure sign enough that collectively, they are morally unfit for duty. Many of them individually demonstrate this on a daily basis. It is the People’s responsibility to see that these elected Officials are replaced ASAP as Congress borders on a dereliction of duty to the Nation.

  36. jaramilr Says:

“the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it”

Two problems with this statement: We don’t know that the threat is real or “severe” and we don’t have any way to “vanquish” it if it is.

We can make the “Iranian threat” real and more severe by attacking Iran, but that would just make it harder to vanquish.

Or we could reduce attempt to reduce the threat through diplomacy, but that would force us to admit that foreign policy is complicated and no threats can be completely vanquished.

  43. JMOHR Says:

There is no imminent threat by Iran against the United States to justify striking at Iran’s nuclear program. They are years away from fielding any weapons. They do not even have the basic manufacturing facilities in place (gas centrifuges only provide one component.) How then will the strike be justified? It is an act of war that has not been authorized by Congress. It is the definition of a war of aggression in violation of the UN charter. It would tie the next president’s hands on policy for no other reason than this president’s desire to fix US policy. It indeed would be impeachable.

    Of course!

You can’t rally the population around the actual threat from Iran, which is that they start their own oil market in Euros and further weaken the dollar while providing discounted oil to China and India and other developing economies that undermines our dominance of their markets.

The neocons have to make up a severe threat, which is that Iran is developing giant nuclear powered mechatron robots that will stomp through Tel Aviv and New York killing all the Jews and converting everyone else to Islam.

If we attack Iran it will surely be an air strike only as another massive ground war could not be supported at this time. And you think gas is expensive now, wait until Bush attacks Iran. That could be his greatest payoff to the oil companies.

I mean this Iraq debacle has set America back 10-15 years.
We are buried in a mountain of debt which contributes to the dollar tanking which contributes to the rise in oil prices which contributes to the decline of the American middle class.
We have taking our eyes off the ball on some very serious issues such as China, energy policies, economics, etc.

How could we have not learned any lessons from Iraq?

Attacking Iran will likely cause oil prices to hit $200 a barrel or more which is like stabbing middle-class America right in the heart economically.

Maybe that’s the point… since the oil companies aren’t getting the Iraq “oil revenue sharing” law passed, this will be used as an excuse to help “reduce” consumer oil prices by drilling in Alaska and off-shore. Not only does BigOil then get “our” oil, which they can then sell back to us, but I bet they also get HUGE government financial incentives for “oil exploration”.

The only way that ever works is through repression and/or religous/ethnic cleansing.
That is kind of in opposition to the supposed ideal of American values, yet America’s greatest friends in the middle east are Israel and Saudi Arabia, who both appear to be playing the U.S. for a sucker.
I know we tolerate this for geopolitical reasons (OIL/$$$), but in my opinion a world view grounded in hypocrisy usually turns out badly in the end.

But don’t you see, that is the goal. You need to start realizing that KBH and the oil companies are the constituancies of the Bush admin. You would think the constituancy would be you and I; but you are wrong. Everytime the invasion creates profits, bush becomes more and more valuable to his bosses. Actually the Israelis don’t like Bush any more than we do. It is the Israeli government that likes Bush. Apparently the Israeli people want their government to talk to Hamas and to find a peaceful solution to the middle east. Their government doesn’t listen to what they want any more than our government listens to what we want.

  68. ctenney Says:

What makes me nervous is that no one has mentioned that a military action against Iran is likely to have a very different result than the military action against Iraq. Iran from all accounts is a country that is functioning well, and would probably be able to retaliate in a more meaningful way against the United States. Part of why Americans who supported the Iraq war did support it was because of the somewhat naive notion that the U.S. could just go in and “bomb them back to the stone age.” (A perfectly reprehensible position to take.) Iran is not Iraq. Plus with the possibility of bootleg nuclear weapons of some kind being out there and available, a military action against Iran would be extremely dangerous.

In the ‘60& ’70’s 57,000+ Americans and @ 2,000,000 Vietnamese died in what was said to be an attempt to “defeat the communists”.

In the ’80’s & ’90’s Vietnam was lured back towards capitalism by Nike & Addidas sneakers, Michael Jackson cd’s
    and Hollywood movies.
It worked better than the bombing without all the carnage.

Most of Iran is under 30 years old.
Time, cell phones and the internet will take their course.
Unleashing death and carnage on innocent people is probably not the best way to handle the situation.

Pakistan has nuclear weapons and they are harboring Al Qaeda and the Taliban in their Northwest provinces. A.Q. Khan, the Pakistani father of “the Islamic bomb” had passed on technology to other countries, not much is heard about him today, but the last news a few years back was “he was under house arrest”…….IN HIS VILLA! WHY NO DANGER THERE?

    whatever.

Now that you caught up on last week’s news, it’s time to pay attention to today’s.

Sec. Gates will address “weak leadership” in the Air Force by visiting two bases to talk about the topic. The first houses nuclear ballistic missiles while the second has tankers that refuel nuclear armed bombers in flight.

Gates just ditched the top two Air Force leaders. This came months after Adm. Fallon, a known opponent to the use of force on Iran, resigned.

Bush wants to be Truman. How many nuclear bombs will he drop before his ushers in his Middle East Marshall Plan?

If GW Botch attacks the sovereign nation of Iran the following are possible:

    1) The UN could sanction the US and bring economic pressures to bear against the Botch administration.

    2) The Shiaa in Iraq could (will in my opinion) start slaughtering our soldiers in even the “safest” places in Iraq.

    3) Turkey could invade the Kurdish north and start a new genocide campaign against the Kurds and take strategic land. The US military and our treasury will be stretched too thin to defend the Kurds.

    4) The dollar could become almost worthless if China dumps our currency to support one of their staunch allies, like Iran or Syria.

    5) Only 1 or 2 oil tankers being sunk by terrorists, anywhere in the world, would drive insurance rates for oil tankers and other ships through the roof worldwide as the US will not be able to protect each and every precious tanker or ship with an over stretched military. This would drive oil prices to $200-300$ a barrel. While Americans would be pissed to the gills, the Europeans and others will be more pissed.

    6) Americans will be less safe in the world in general.

    7) Others will seek to arrive on our shores and destroy us more than ever before. They will be more clandestine. They will find sympathy in people that we once thought would be our friends.

    8) Non-terrorist governments (i.e. England, Spain, etc.) will face massive increases in security threats from within and without. The cost will be astronomical and unacceptable to those countries. And all nations supporting any slightly mistaken form of democracy or US support will come under attack worldwide.

    9) Any efforts by the US to bring diplomacy and common ground to the peace table will be met with massive skepticism for years to come.

    10) It may be necessary to outlaw the RePugniScum Party and convict most of its leaders down to the state level to convince the world that the US is a democracy and can correct itself from within.
