Like Father, Like Daughter: Elizabeth Cheney Threatens ‘Military Action’ Against Iran»

cheneyliz.jpgThe Washington Post notes today that Liz Cheney, daughter of Vice President Cheney and a former State Department official, is “unhappy with key elements of U.S. Mideast policy.” “[W]e have been less effective and less successful…when we have been unfortunately not so bold,” she said of the Bush administration in remarks to AIPAC last week.

Liz Cheney encouraged the U.S. to draw more “red lines” in the Middle East, adopting an even harder-line than the Bush administration on key policies. When it came to Iran, however, Liz Cheney, seemed to be in full agreement with at least one administration official: her father. In her remarks, Cheney said the “time for diplomacy” with Iran is “rapidly coming to an end“:

Over the years, she said, there has been “no shortage of efforts to talk to them” — but to no avail: “We don’t have the luxury to have the debate we have been having about should we talk, should we not talk. The time for diplomacy here is rapidly coming to an end.

Left unmentioned in the Post’s story is that Liz Cheney also said the U.S. also needs to threaten Iran with “military action.” The Asia Times reports:

[Liz Cheney] deplored…the Bush administration’s failure to enforce “red lines” against Iranian advances in the region. Washington, she declared, must clearly state that if Iranians “don’t give up diplomatically [to United Nations demands that it freeze its nuclear program], they will face military action“.

At AIPAC, Liz Cheney also “made clear her view that the recent efforts by Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal are taking resources away from dealing with Iran,” the Post notes.

Indeed, as Dan Froomkin noted in April, Vice President Cheney has been on the “warpath” with Iran recently, drumming up the threat coming from the country. In fact, Gareth Porter reported last week that “Pentagon officials firmly opposed a proposal by Vice President Dick Cheney last summer for airstrikes against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.”

    What diplomacy?
Screeching war talk, making threats and beating your chest is not diplomacy in any reasonable definition of the word.

The man inside the Pentagon who stood up to Cheney last summer–Adm. Fallon–has been pushed out the door. Another, the philanderer extraordinaire, Adm. Stufflebeem, has been torpedoed. The only think keeping the neocons from bombing Iran this instant is the election. Once the election is over, I’d be more than shocked if Iran were not bombed.

Is she really that big of an imbecile, or did she inherit her father’s uncanny ability to lie and spout insanity with a straight face?

Lizzie, let me break it down for you: Solving the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, creating peace there etc etc, would go a LONG way towards solving ALL of our Middle East problems. Dropping bombs will just create more prob…oh why do I even bother…

Now, if we can just keep these crazy people under control until January, we will be OK. I fear the only way we will be able to do it is to have Bush/Cheney under Articles of Impeachment. Unfortunately Pelosi and Reid probably think that would be the wrong move at this time because they are scared it might get in the way of Obama being elected President. Personally I think it would help greatly if the Democrats would start showing some spine.

It’s good there’s no other superpower to decide that the US poses an imminent threat to the Mid-east and the world. Lord knows they would have plenty of evidence; the actual threat that SH posed pales in comparison to the real threat posed by the US. (Having nuclear bombs is more threatening than not having them, no matter how secretively you’re trying to aquire them.)

  30. paleolib Says:

One can only wonder how anyone can say with a straight face that the time for diplomacy with Iran is coming to an end when this administration has never seriously attempted it. Talking at someone is not the same as talking to them.

  31. Zimzone Says:

Fact: Israel has been talking with Iran.

Fact: Malaki spent the weekend in Iran, talking to them.

Fact: Condi, Dick, Liz, W, Bolton, Gates have NOT talked to Iran, and have no intention of doing so.

Liz Cheney’s ‘position’ should be front gunner on an un-armored jeep. She can live the dream she sees for all Americans. Rich, white people always want YOUR CHILDREN to create their wealth by fighting the fight they are too frightened to fight themselves. 2% of the population of America decides what the other 98% are going to do; that doesn’t seem fair to me. Does that seem fair to you?

  39. misshusseinmolly Says:

Am I missing something? The NIE late last year claimed that Iran had already abandoned their nuclear weapons development program back in 2003. Since then, Bushco has done their best to discredit the NIE and has continued to make threats about attacking Iran “unless they stop their nuclear weapons program”, without any intelligence or evidence that they have continued with it. However, it’s pretty well-known that Iran is still working on a nuclear POWER program.

    1. Is there new evidence that Iran is working on a bomb and I just missed it?

    2. Is Bushco still trying to get us to believe that a nuclear power program and a nuclear weapons program are the same thing?

    3. Since we don’t believe our own intelligence that Iran has abandoned their nuclear weapons program, is there anything Iran could do that would convince us? Or have we just adopted the position that we will never believe anything they say and are using this as an excuse to bomb the daylights out of them, regardless?

    4. If we are sincere about attacking Iran purely because they are developing a nuclear weapon, why aren’t we doing anything about countries that already have them? Like North Korea? Oh, that’s right — North Korea doesn’t have terrorists that want to attack us. Well, how about Pakistan? They have nuclear weapons AND they have Al Qaeda, so why aren’t we planning to bomb them?

Methinks Bushco will find a way to bomb Iran before their term will end, and they won’t let anything (like logic or common sense) stand in their way. They really, really, really want to do this, even though it will could cause gas prices to reach insane levels, break our military completely, bankrupt our country, and galvanize the world against us to a degree that will give all of us nightmares.

And there are a lot of Americans who think that electing McCain is a great idea. Boggles the mind.

  40. McWars Says:

liberal traitor and Dr. Matt, I’ll second that. As a teen several years back, I hated the one time I camped because I was irrationally stuck on video games and didn’t like being away from that. I’d like to camp again, regardless of Bush/Cheney pushing their wrecking ball through our economy in the form of attacking Iran and driving gas prices to monumental levels, and this is an ideal time to be gathering materials in accordance with our standard of living going to crap.

It’s actually the other Cheney daughter, Mary, who “plays for the other team.” Elizabeth is heterosexual and is married to a male.

And there’s still no evidence that one’s sexual orientation has anything to do with mental arthritis…

  43. A Patriot Acting Says:

“Pentagon officials firmly opposed a proposal by Vice President Dick Cheney last summer for airstrikes against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.”

Wait just a G@d-damned minute! What is Dick the VP doing bringing airstrike proposals directly to the Pentagon? Isn’t any use of military force supposed to go directly through and authorized by Congress? Is this SOP for a Veep?

  44. RUCerious Says:

MissHMolly, I read a poll the other day that showed 59% of Americans agree we should bomb Iran to prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Now that’s some great propagandizing, since they aren’t even developing nuclear weapons…

  45. octamethyl Says:

Diplomacy, like anything else, must BEGIN before it can draw to an end.
Perhaps the Cheney tribe is miplacing, projecting anger on Iran, because “they don’t have any homosexuals”, like the Cheneys do.

  56. Paul W Says:

In her remarks, Cheney said the “time for diplomacy” with Iran is “rapidly coming to an end“…

When did diplomacy start? Turning a blind eye to other countries in the region developing nuclear weapons (Israel, India, Paskistan) doesn’t count as diplomacy. Neither does invading and destroying a neighboring country that is absolutely no threat to you.

Unfortunately, this ‘loser’ has some influence as well with these criminals in BushCo., so we’re in a heap o’crap, The thing that keeps cropping up for me is this…so WHAT if Iran gets a nuke? Whatever happened to Mutually Assured Destruction? That doctrine worked well until we decided that ‘thought-crime’ was enough to start bombing the shit out of anybody that even considered a devastating weapon. Maybe the rest of the world will come to that conclusion about the UNITED STATES!!

  63. Shayne Says:

Liz Cheney is the “straight” daughter married to a neocon. Mary Cheney, the lesbian, is much more attractive.

  64. pbg Says:

    Here’s an interesting thought:
With the orcs in the white house cranking up the rhetoric, and a (maybe) nuclear assault on Iran imminent, Russia declares that it views an attack on Iran as an attack against its own territory, and will respond in kind.
Russia, as would be good to remember, has THOUSANDS of nuclear warheads on ICBMs against which we have no defense. Russia could still annihilate the United States between lunchtime and dinner.
The last piece is swept from Georgie’s hand: he either accepts the ultimate humiliation of the United States or the end of the world; Russia becomes a hero in the eyes of the rest of the world, and the Russian/Iranian oil axis becomes a major power in the world.

The Right loves to scream about threats that they know aren’t important. Why they persistently blank out real threats is kind of bewildering.

  65. Bozo The Neoclown Says:
