Poll: 74 percent of GOP lawmakers don’t believe in manmade global warming.»

In its recent “congressional insiders poll,” the National Journal questioned 39 GOP senators and congressmen about whether they believe global warming is manmade. The results:

Hey, isn’t that number already owned by Bush? Isn’t that his approval rating? Think it’s the same folks? I realize that the “percent” is misleading, because it only represents 39 people, but still…

    I don’t believe in coincidences!

  2. Nevar Says:

You have the title and the facts a little topsy turvy, TP,

I read that 26 percent DO believe in man-made global warming…
74 per cent of republicans do not believe it has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt…

  3. MCMetal Says:

You mean ONLY 26% DO BELIEVE in man-made global warming , TP , judging by the chart you have posted…….

Okay, I have read this three times…shouldn’t the headline read 74 percent don’t believe it?

Idiots! If our worst fears concerning global warming come true then being top dog isn’t going to count for much.

This post also confirms the obvious, that Republicans believe what they want to believe, reality doesn’t enter into it.

  8. Mugsy Says:

Ditto on what others are saying: the numbers are reversed.

    ONLY 26% believe…

Umm… didn’t tax cuts during wartime pretty much take care of that already?

With a little help from outsourcing jobs, unregulated financial markets and massive federal debt, of course…

  10. Nevar Says:

“In its recent “congressional insiders poll,” the National Journal questioned 39 GOP senators and congressmen about whether they believe global warming is manmade.”

That’s only 30 Republican lawmakers who don’t believe global warming has been proven to be caused by human pollution. They are a combination of Senators and congressmen, and they are all “congressional insiders”, in effect a select group.
What is the distinction between a “congressional insider”, and a plain old legislator? Inquiring minds await.

  14. misshusseinmolly Says:

Huh? TP, your headline isn’t matching your content. Even if you DID have the 26% “yes” figure in the data matching the 26% “no” figure in the headline (and that topsy-turvy was pointed out by Nevar and others), the wording is a bit misleading.

The question asked includes the phrase “proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” This isn’t the same as “don’t believe” — as I think there could be a number of those polled who believe that man-caused global warming is probable or likely, but might balk at committing to “proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

We all know that global warming is a huge concern for the world, and there is plenty of evidence to back that up. So much that we really don’t need to sensationalize the data with incorrect headlines.

Would you like to just scratch this whole thing and try again? :-)

These people need to enter reality. Making our society more energy efficient will help the economy, not hurt it. Switching to renewable alternative fuels will provide jobs for thousands,
eliminate foreign control of our energy supply, and prevent these 100% gas price rises that bankrupt millions of Americans.
These GOP senators need to take a look at Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, all are using large portions of renewable alternative fuels and trust me it did not destroy their economy.
It is the anti-global warming and anti-alternative fuels crowd that is destroying our economy they are the ones who stopped us from getting of oil, and look what were that got us, $4+ gasoline.

  22. ralph the wonder llama Says:

To be scrupulously fair to the small sample of Republicans who took part in the survey, one of them was quoted:

“Put it this way: Is there anyone who reasonably believes that the emissions caused by man have no effect on the environment? It doesn’t take a degree in science to accept the concept that the actions of billions of people driving millions of cars do indeed impact the world around us.”

Pretty sound thinking, from my perspective.

Of course, this is a decidedly minority view in that caucus…

  23. Xisithrus Says:

“It’s been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Democrats are OK with the idea of surrendering our spot atop the world economy.”

Im not sure who implied this…but its wrong. The greedy folks driving up prices keep the American people from consuming. The securities bubble, predatory highly leveraged credit schemes, has cause losses of hundreds of billions if not a trillion. High fuel prices, 70% of oil futures are speculative traders, keep people from consuming. Wars add to the problem of inflation which drive prices up and decreases the ability of Americans to spend.

Its not democrats, its called capitalists.

UPDATE UPDATE! OT but Scotty has just agreed to testify on June 20!

“Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, whose scathing memoir about his time in the Bush administration sent waves through Washington D.C., has agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, a senior committee official told The Huffington Post.

McClellan, who detailed the “propaganda” campaign that led to the Iraq war in his book, “What Happened,” is scheduled to appear on June 20.

His hearing will focus primarily on the investigation into the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame, an episode that McClellan has said was driven by political motivations from within the Oval Office. But the committee could press the former press secretary on other matters within its jurisdiction, including the possible authorization of torture by administration officials (though it remains to be seen how much knowledge McClellan has of that topic).”

Well, man-made global warming is not a proven scientific fact. Its theory. I don’t see why so many people have so much faith in an unproven theory of man-made global warming when the science behind it is so obviously political and is not even conclusive. The proposed remedies are very expensive and frankly I am suspicious that many of the people trying to stop global warming through legislation are doing so for political reasons rather than environmental reasons.

And there’s the problem. To an authoritarian, only what is believed is considered true and personal prejudice has more to do with what is believed than direct observation of reality. Damn the facts, they believe what they want. And that’s what makes them dangerous.

Their delusions are so unassailable that arguments from a realistic perspective don’t even register. And, in this particular case, there is no possible way to convince them of the reality of global warming because it directly challenges their sense of entitlement. Plus, since they made it a “librul issue”, they dismiss any new data as part of the left-wing conspiracy.

    2) The GOP likes to lie to itself and say we area super power; we are not. The last 7+ years have been sqandered and we now owe - OWE - more than we can probably ever pay off. And we owe all that money to a sworn enemy: China.

The GOP is full if sh!t, as always. They wrap themselves up in the flag, a bible, and their unattractive mistress - all the while telling us not to woory about all the corruption we see.

    dbadass,
Obviously global warming is political. That’s why we’re discussing it on this political blog of course. Do you honestly think that the pro-kyoto type folks are solely interested in the environment?
Even though the science is clearly inconclusive at this point, some politicians want to pass punitive type legislature in attempt to influence global climate trends, which I find a bit amusing, but whatever. Frankly, there are a lot of people out there who do resent America’s progress and who do feel that we enjoy a standard of living that we don’t deserve. I’m not willing to lower my standard of living, nor sacrifice our economy when the science is not conclusive. You should be supporting more scientific studies, ones void of bias or politics so we can really see what’s going on.
Regardless how many times people say that “the debate is over” on this subject, its clearly not over and will rightly continue until the science can be proven.

The vast majority of scientists are not political. Or at least, they weren’t until the arrogance and disregard for their work shown by the Bush administration may have turned them political.

But to claim that science is liberal is just absurd, unless you accept that facts and reality have a liberal bias. Come to think of it, don’t dismiss it so easily. It might be the strongest argument you can make.

    Sweet! thanks, Shayne.

  60. pete Says:

Well. That erases any remaining doubts about the depths of the “new” sockpuppet’s trollishness. Here are four simple, and undisputed, facts.

    1. According to the best data from throughout the geological record, average global temperature and high quantities of greenhouse gases are directly proportional.

    2. Since the beginning of sampling data, which roughly corresponds with the dawn of the industrial age, human emissions, atmospheric CO2 and average world temperature have, despite local temporary fluctuations, risen proportionately.

    3. Over, approximately, the last 40 years human emissions, atmospheric CO2 and average global temps have risen proportionally at an alarming rate.

    4. Numerous predictions about the effects of these trends (shrinking glaciers for example) have been proven correct, except that many of these predicted events are happening faster than originally predicted. And they are accelerating more rapidly than some of the most dire warnings. (NOTE: Many of these predictions have held true despite other weather fluctuations, such as el nino. The effects of global climate change are clearly operating independently of these other fluctuations.)

Most anyone with even a casual appreciation of the dynamics of climatology are left with only one conclusion. Global climate change is real and man made.

On a personal note. As a naturalist who has spent most of my life along a boundary between climate zones, I have seen global warming. I’ve seen it in the seasons, the behavior of wild things and the invasion by “warm weather” species. Even such things as migration patterns and the dropping of fall foliage have changed significantly. Many of these changes are recent, sudden and severe, and they are things which had not changed since prehistoric times. I needed some help connecting dots, but, I have directly observed global warming all my life.

  61. gunclinger Says:

    Ralph llama,
I never once said the science on global warming was “liberal”. I said it was inconclusive. If man-made global warming is proven scientific fact, I’ll be a big supporter of creative, fair and effective ideas to help prevent it. Until then, there’s no reason to unfairly punish Americans just because the Democrat politicians want to come off as being pro-environment friends to their constituents. Btw, for those bashing the GOP (I’m not btw), it seems to me that their party has moved in the direction of global warming. Probably because they figured out how to make money off global warming and that carbon credit nonsense.

  62. Shayne Says:

I read your posts and they sound as though they being being recited by a small child. No facts….Start with facts, then move on to opinion. If you are not a scientist - I am not - then your opinion means didley. Find facts we can discuss.

Facts are on the side of Global Warming brought about by widespread increases in CO2 within the atmosphere. Man is partly the reason the CO2 have increased so much. Thousands of scientists - I mean real ones, not the ones Inhofe would parade out - have stated this fact. I know facts are hard to come by during your allegiance to Bush meetings, but please try to pull your cranium from the GOP butt.

You can see more clearly, Troll! We don’t have a difference of opinion, we have a difference of IQ. I am sorry to say you pulled the short straw.

You also seem pretty sure of yourself when you say:

there’s no reason to unfairly punish Americans just because the Democrat politicians want to come off as being pro-environment friends to their constituents

Do you consider opportunities for innovation “punishment”?

Are you content to let OPEC dictate our way of life? That, to me, sounds more like “punishment”.

The drive to develop new clean energy technologies seems to me much closer to an opportunity for the US to exploit its technological and educational advantages to regain the global lead in the energy infrastructure and economy of the future.

But then, sounds like I have more confidence in the power of American drive and discovery than you do.

  74. pete Says:

You’re welcome Nevar. It’s one of my favorite topics.

One also needs to consider the other damage our insane drive to burn stuff is doing. Remember “acid rain”? It’s still getting worse and now there’s a new one (that was predicted in the 19th century) called oceanic acidification. Basically, when there is more CO2 in the air the ocean absorbs more. As water absorbs CO2 it becomes more acidic. One of the chief problems with this is that any tiny rise in acidity interferes with the ability of various invertebrates to make shells. Worst possible case? Every shelled ocean creature goes extinct and takes nearly everything else with them.

    And that’s just one.

The simple fact is that we, as a species, need to consider the effect we have when we burn stuff. If our planet is to continue to support anything approaching the number of people it does now? We MUST burn less stuff per person. We MUST make changes but sacrifices will be superficial. Though, I must admit, I regret the inevitability that we MUST sacrifice size and performance in vehicles. But anyone who claims we need to destroy the world’s economy or return to caves is either a frightened child or an oil man.

That’s what’s so frustrating. There will be some initial cost, but, there is so much that can be done and won’t detract from quality of life in any way. There is no legit reason to build most roofs without solar panels. There’s no legit reason not to use the latest scrubber technology on every smokestack and exhaust pipe. There’s no legit reason why every possible gram of garbage isn’t turned into fuel. And there’s no legit reason to be sitting alone at a stoplight in a 5,000lb, 8 passenger, 4 wheel drive SUV without paying a 15,000% “waste tax” for the gas.

The real kicker is that new technologies, including efficient vehicles, will make huge fortunes. But it can’t happen until the energy lobby’s stranglehold on Washington is broken. The sad fact is it will probably take a whole new generation of politician to allow real progress in green and alternative tech.

Later db. You know I won’t let them spout their crap if I’m around.

I disagree about the waste tax. They’ll automatically get hit financially at the pump when driving a low MPG vehicle. However, renewing vehicle tabs/licenses should be based on weight, i.e., wear and tear on the roads.

“It’s been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Democrats are OK with the idea of surrendering our spot atop the world economy.”

Since it’s the Republican economic policies that have already achieved the effect of surrendering our position in the world economy, this is an interesting circumlocution. It also defies even a grade school level of logic or the simplest critical thinking. Morons.

  85. pete Says:

Perhaps “waste tax” was an unfortunate expression? That being said, I think that the “special” registrations should carry a fuel class that affects the price at the pump. Obviously there are legit uses for large vehicles which must be considered, but, I don’t think a common price will truly force the conservation measures needed. On the other hand, someone will think twice about 12mpg if they also know it will mean paying more per gallon. I’m afraid that new policies will have to include some punitive measures.

Another option would be to designate certain, less efficient, vehicles as bio-fuel only so that the nasty hydrocarbon emissions are at least limited. there’s plenty of room for experiments and thinking outside the box. But some attitudes will need to be forced.

    Pete, agreed.
