Laura Bush also defended the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Michelle Obama said during February campaign stops in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis., that she was proud of the United States for the first time in her adult life. Barack Obama later said she meant that she was proud of the politics of America for the first time.

“I think she probably meant ‘I’m more proud,’ you know, is what she really meant,” Laura Bush said. “You have to be very careful in what you say. Everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued.”
