97-year-old woman in Arizona falls victim to state’s stringent voter ID law.»

A 97-year-old Arizona woman who has voted in every election since 1933 says she won’t be able to vote in November, due to the state’s stringent voter ID law that requires proof of citizenship for those registering to vote and a photo ID when voting. Shirley Preiss was born in 1910 in Kentucky, before the state issued birth certificates. She has no driver’s license or passport. “Preiss said for someone who once lived in a time when women could not vote, the law is a step backwards.”

    After the hundreds of thousands of grannies that Obama disenfranchised in Fl&Mi - the democrats have a really weak stance on this issue! Counting all of the votes, and letting every vote cast count - seems to be a ‘luxury’ Democrats can’t afford to support when it comes to primaries. Sorry, but this complaint rings hollow after so many Democrats sat by and said nothing when Obama did something far worse than preventing the vote of ONE candidate from taking effect. Yet, I’m sure all of the Obamaheads will just attack me, instead of admitting they helped disenfranchise voters…

    BTW, playing the victim card in advance is weak. You might want to consider a name change to “I’m a weenie who can’t deal with reality.”

  32. WaltB Says:

    My wife’s 87 year old mother moved in with us last November from Pittsburgh. She had a valid PA ID card, but couldn’t get a Virginia one with just that (remember, most of those hijackers had VA driver’s licenses?) and was told to just bring in her passport. She replied, “I’ve never been outside of this country and don’t ever want to go! Why do I need a passport?” They didn’t want to accept her DD214 from being a WWII Navy veteran (too old), nor her original birth certificate (didn’t have a notary seal on it), would accept USPS forwarded mail, and her Medicare card. The three acceptable IDs were not enough, until I got a bit hot under the collar and demanded to talk to the DMV office manager. She decided my mother in law didn’t look much like an illegal immigrant or terrorist and told the clerk to accept everything.

    Moral of the story is: If you aren’t an immigrant, you’ll play hell getting anything if your wallet gets lost. Fork out the money, get a passport (gee, does this sound like a National ID?) and lock it up somewhere safe. Even if it’s expired, it’ll still work.

  33. Wayne Says:

  39. 5th Estate Says:

    “…before the state issued birth certificates” !!!

    Good googly moogly!!! 97 year old, hasn’t been officially born and apparently therefore doesn’t exist.

    However, as she does exist in fact, I’d say she should do the following:

    As she deosn’t exist, she can’t have paid for anything–utilities, taxes, anything at all. But as she must have been paid for work and paid taxes, she does exist–ergo her existence and status as a citizen is proven ( plus the voting record of course) ergo either she gets to vote or all the monies she’s ever paid to the government should be returned to her, with interest–which would then confirm her existence and status AGAIN, and then she can sue for civii rights infringement!

    No, she didn’t. Spend some time in rural America and you will quickly discover that for lots of people, things like the list you wrote are not too important. If they don’t drive, no license. If they don’t travel, no passport. If they are not a refugee, well you get the idea. She was born before birth certificates were issued. YOUR life of documents should not be used to compare to what another loyal American must have. YOU were brought up under authoritarian times where you were marked by our government. She was brough up during a time when your government was not interested in tracking her every move. Let the woman vote!

    What is wrong with this line of reasoning?

    1. This was a party primary and not an election. We see voting, we see caucuses and combination methods depending upon the rules that the party establishes.

    2. The party established a scheduling system in order to spread the primaries. Michigan and Florida violated those rules and knew that the consequences could include lessening the delegates or even excluding the state’s delegation.

    3. The candidates all agreed that the state delegation would not be seated at all. All but one candidate removed their names from the ballot.

    4. Florida and Michigan always had the right to do the primary over prior to the convention in accordance with the party rules. However, neither state made any move to do so until such time as the race became close. By then, the state parties, candidates and the national party could not resolve the issue.

    So get off of it idiot. You mouth the usual simplistic pap that one comes to expect from the loyal toadies of the Republican party. You can make the same comment about the Republican party since they use a winner take all system in their primaries while the Dems spread the votes. I guess you can attack the United States since we award electoral college votes based on a winner take all system. By God, should not Al Gore have taken care of that while he was president having received the majority of votes. Come a**h*le let us hear you decry the election of that war criminal George Bush and demand that he be hung as a traitor since obviously he was fine with making sure that the vote of a majority of voters did not count in 2000. Now go, crawl under the usual rock that we expect you.

    Really? It seems pretty sane to me.

    U.S. State, Local Government – issued Certificate of Birth;

    Nope. Read the article - she didn’t have a birth certificate because they didn’t have birth certificates in 1910.

    U.S. Passport;

    Nope. She didn’t have a U.S. passport.

    Valid Foreign Passport with Appropriate Immigration Document(s);

    Nope. She didn’t have a foreign passport either.

    Certificate of Citizenship (Form N560);

    Nope. Kentucky is in the United States. Therefore, she would not be entitled to a certificate of citizenship.

    Certificate of Naturalization (Form N550);

    Nope. Kentucky is in the United States. Therefore, she would not need to be nationalized.

    Valid DHS/USCIS I-551 Resident Alien Card issued since 1997;

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States. Therefore, she would not need a Resident Alien Card.

    Valid DHS/USCIS I-688 Temporary Resident Identification Card;

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States. Therefore, she would not need a Temporary Resident Identification Card.

    Valid DHS/USCIS I-688B, I-766 Employment Authorization Card;

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States. Therefore, she would not need a Employment Authorization Card.

    Valid DHS/USCIS I-571 Refugee Travel Document;

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States and not considered a zone of conflict. Therefore, she would not need nor be entitled to a Refugee Travel Document.

    DHS/USCIS I-797 Notice of Action;

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States. Therefore, she would not need a USCIS Notice of Action.

    DHS/TSA Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC);

    Nope. Arizona is a landlocked state. Therefore, it is unlikely that the 97-year old was a port employee or dockworker in need of a TWIC.

    U.S. Department of Receptions and Placement Program Assurance Form (Refugee).

    Nope. Arizona is in the United States and not considered a zone of conflict. Therefore, she would not need nor be entitled to a Program Assurance Form for refugees.

    Sorry if any of this is difficult for you to understand.

    Has anyone, ANYONE, ever known someone denied voting at their local precent because a devious person stole “their identity”?
    I mean, you are grouped into demographics according to your zipcode and school district. Then, you “identify” yourself by stating your name and address, sign a card, and then your are crossed off a list, which prevents anyone else using your name.
    I mean, come on. With all this voter fraud, this has got to be widespread, right? Illegal aliens stealing massive amount of identities to vote.
    (of course, the above paragraph is a snark, because it HAS NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE!)

    Max-1 @ 94,

    I hear you. Those who greenlighted computer voting ala Diebold in the 1st place must have had Uncle Joe’s words in mind…

  97. RightOfAttila Says:

    You’re very quick to blame Republicans for one woman’s inability to vote but at the same time you cut down by half the vote of two entire states (FL and MI).

  98. RUCerious Says:

    Why does a Hun care about those who violate Democratic party rules? Go play with your pyramid of skulls, dufus.

    Quick!! We have a backup of trollit #97! We need a crapcannon ASAP!! Somebody must have used TP too much.

  100. JMOHR Says:

    It is quintessential that any action taken by the government to limit the access of an essential civil liberty of its citizens must be done for a valid and good reason. The Supreme Court has become ruled by conservative puppets who have used the power of their decisions to extend a one party system in the United States. Preventing voter fraud is a legitimate concern and goal for any voting system. However, there must be a reckoning as to the threat to the system and the collateral damage to the voting rights of innocent citizens. The Supreme Court exaggerated the threat and down played the impact on legitimate voters.

    1. There has been no evidence of voter fraud at polling places in the United States for many decades. The Republican led and highly politicized DoJ pulled out all stops in order to go after and disclose voter fraud. No cases of actual voter fraud were discovered. Indeed, DoJ only found a handful of cases that presented an issue of voter registration fraud (albeit in extremely technical sense) and in only one case where the person actually voted. (A person who had been convicted of a felony who turned himself in when he realized he should not have voted.)

    2. All legitimate voting experts have agreed that voter fraud at the polling place has not been a significant problem in the United States.

    3. The Republican party has discussed and developed a strategy to tighten voting requirements because it will impact those groups that the Republicans believe will be more inclined to vote Democratic. Indeed, the Republican party is the only party that has had to sign an agreement with the Justice Department because of its illegal voter suppression tactics. Voter caging, jamming phone lines and other illegal tactics have involved the Republican party. Their intent is clear. However, I have to correct myself. There is one clear case of intentional voter fraud in the United States that has been fully documented. That is the case of a certain female right wing radio host, Ann Coulter. Somehow that case was not prosecuted.

    4. The laws place a disproportionate burden on minorities, the aged and poor. Many people do not have birth certificates. There can be significant problems in obtaining one, especially when you are outside the state in which you were born. Not everyone has a passport or drivers license. Even states providing a state ID require a birth certificate or passport before providing the card. Think about the cost of a birth certificate or passport. It is an indirect poll tax. These laws do not need to be rushed into execution. They can be phased in to permit people to gather the documents and to assess the actual impact.

    These are Republicans rushing the laws onto the books in a presidential election year. They need to be stopped.

    You’re very quick to blame Republicans for one woman’s inability to vote but at the same time you cut down by half the vote of two entire states (FL and MI).

    Where was all the indignation against the parties of MI and FL when they made these changes that could have cost them 100% of Democratic votes if the rules had been adhered to. Not until Hillary lost was this even an issue. Why don’t you go call RHF.

  108. nanlichi Says:

    Ann Coulter has bigger problems than voter fraud, I understand that she has been masquerading as a member of the homo sapiens species.

    That’s clearly fraudulent.

  109. djreedps Says:

    Democrats should use this story to convince senior citizens that the Republican Party does not have their best interests in mind. That, plus Bush’s failed social security privatization schemes and the medicare drug program which benefited drug companies first should give Democrats a lot to gain back senior citizens who may disagree with social issues like abortion or gay rights but should now see the GOP as an enemy of seniors.

    But the Democrats often fail to use opportunities like this one on a grand scale. Think Kerry 2004.

    But really, thanks for adding the bradblog link. Great site that I actually read on a daily basis.

    Sorry, Shayne. All the decent trolls had to get jobs in convenience stores because the RNC couldn’t afford to pay them anymore.

    This is pretty much what’s left in the bunker.

    Once again, one must admit, when RightOfAttila Says: “You’re very quick to blame Republicans for one woman’s inability to vote but at the same time you cut down by half the vote of two entire states (FL and MI),” he might be right. Clearly, if the 97-year-old woman had, for example, violated the orders and broken the conventions of her party, conducting an extensive state-wide election outside their rules, we would nave no reason to bemoan the loss of her vote.

    She’ll probly be dead before November, anyway, right, ROA?

  114. Tenebrae Says:

    Enough already about supposedly disenfranchised MI and FL voters. Yes, the state officials were stupid, and so were the national officials. HOWEVER, it’s up to the party how they select a nominee. The national party has decided staes shoudl have delegates, and the states determine how to award those delegates. If the state wants to have an election, cool. If they want a caucus, fine. If they wish to decide it by rock-papers-sissors, well, that’s up to them.

    Sorry, but individuals have no specific right to vote in a PARTY’S PRIMARY.

    And FWIW, I’m a MI voter.
