Washington Times’ Tony Blankley: Obama might be a ‘dictator.’

In the Washington Times today, former Newt Gingrich aide Tony Blankley tries to cast Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) as a potential “dictator” in waiting. Claiming that Obama made a “shockingly dictatorial assertion” last month when he said Americans can’t expect to be considered world leaders while still driving SUVs and eating “as much as we want,” Blankley asks if he is a “dictator or democrat?“:

Dictator or democrat? Radical or liberal? Who in the world is this man? Where in the world is the responsible media? What’s going on?

Blankley’s column is just the latest entry in the right wing’s outlandish efforts to paint Obama as a scary radical. Last week, former House minority leader Tom DeLay (R) said of Obama, “unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist.”

Oh my god — they really got nothin’.

The question is: do they know they got nothin’ and are just flailing? Or are they delusional enough to think that this crap makes sense?

Knowing Tony Blankley, I’d say it was a bit of a toss-up.

  2. octamethyl says:

    Desperation.
Any reasonable person need only consider Chimpy W to define a dictator.

  6. Marie says:

The march of the slime has begun — last week he was too Marxist, now a potential dictator.
The personal jabs against him have fallen away, so let’s attack him with false comparisons.
Blankely (and by association, his beloved Rev. Moon) have neglected to look in the neighborhood of the White House for dictators.

How dare the liberal media print something so libelous as that against Senator McCain! It just shows how evil the liberal media can be! And you just watch, the liberal media won’t even report on this outrage!

What’s that, they weren’t calling McCain a dictator? They were calling Obama a dictator??

The extremists are very scared of Obama. Why?

  16. SpoxLogic says:

let’s me see: “Eating as much as we want; driving SUVs”- he said that so he must be a dictator.
While Bush says…”we can torture whomever we want, arrest and keep isolated anyone we want, spy on whomever we want…”

    Wayne Says:

Yeah, I hear they have to keep the mixture balanced just right — too much Stupid and their minions won’t get enough Lock-step. Their Faith-based nutrients might suffer reduced levels, as well.

  18. hussein toasterhead says:

    From the AFP article:

Pitching his message to Oregon’s environmentally-conscious voters, Obama called on the United States to “lead by example” on global warming, and develop new technologies at home which could be exported to developing countries.

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

So let me see if I’ve got this, cause I’m a little confused. By suggesting that perhaps Americans – in the effort to remain competitive globally and solve the most pressing environmental concern of this century – will need to conserve energy a bit, Obama is acting dictatorially and doing away with 250 years of democratic governance?

Nope, I’m still not getting it. Someone please explain this one to me.

Why do we continue to tolerate people driving 30mph in a 15mph zone?

Why do we continue to allow smokers and the obese to continue their habits so they can get sick and be unable to pay their bills, where the costs are passed on to people who become ill without such eggregious habits?

  46. JMOHR says:

Get your game face on and wake up. Blankley knows that Obama is not a dictator in waiting. That is not the point of his rant. This has been the coordinated attack of conservatives and Republican for years against Democrats. It is the politics of ridicule and demeaning your opponent. It does not matter how far a stretch that you must make as long as you are calling the Democrats unpatriotic, radical, extremist, country hating and undemocratic.

THE PROBLEM IS THE FAILURE OF DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS TO RESPOND TO THESE ATTACKS BY POINTING OUT THOSE REPUBLICANS WHO FILL EXACTLY THESE DESCRIPTIONS. Do you really expect this kind of smear campaign to have absolutely no impact? We saw Gore, Kerry and Edward feminized, called girlee boys, unpatriotic and extremist. Do you then have any reason to wonder why they lose elections to the Republicans?

  53. wdrane says:

This is going around. A teaching colleague at my public middle school told this to kids in his class several weeks ago. It was based on a CNN Ballot Bowl cut to video as Obama was in the middle of answering a question — which was not in the video– and a bad transcript of the event. What little context there was was ignored. It is amazing that educated people are so unskilled in comprehending the English Language. Based on the teacher’s comments, kids actually came out of this guy’s class into mine saying, “Obama won’t let us drive our cars, or have our food!”. To his class, the teacher used “socialist” to describe Obama and words such as “pink” and “collectivism” in his email to me when I questioned him. I really don’t know whether these people are paranoid, unscrupulous, or worse.

Fear is a strong motivator– my counter-argument failed to convince my students who had learned from this science teacher that Obama was a dishonest, evil man.

  59. McWars says:

    Well stated, JMOHR.

The Republican method of running a campaign, where democratic opponents are seen not as competitive challenges but as dirty dogs to kick around, has been successful throughout the years, thanks to the masses who vote against their own interests. Some of the aforementioned I took from a recent Obama quote I’m unable to find.

Their tactics are now failing. People are reading more into democratic proposals are getting the whole story. More people understand that “every man for himself” is regressive and does not form a well-developed society.

Gee, do you think he might go so far as to suspend habeus corpus? Or sign bills into law with caveats that claim the right to interpret them however he wants to (maybe they would be called “signing statements” or something similar)? Could it be that, like any good dictator, he would push for laws that allow him to have anyone, anywhere, arrested for actions that he himself defines as illegal (golly, he might even come up with some term for such folks, say “enemy combatant”; and if he says you’re an “enemy combatant” you get thrown in jail with no constitutional rights)?

Boy, he’s right, we sure wouldn’t want anyone as president that would do *any* of those things, much less *all* of them.

I’m sure glad mr. blankley is looking out for evil like this in the good ol’ you ess of ay. You can be sure that if anyone started doing any of those things mr. blankley would be the first to warn us.

Media Matters (godbless’em) archived the following about Newt’s former press secretary:

Blankley’s “sober, rational, conservative view” has been marked by distortions, inaccuracies, and baseless smears:

    * He described billionaire philanthropist George Soros as “a left wing crank,” “a robber baron,” “a pirate capitalist,” and “a Jew who figured out a way to survive the Holocaust.”
    * He ridiculed Inauguration Day protesters from the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), calling the organization “People Eating Tasty Animals.”
    * He lauded the discredited book Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry (Regnery, 2004) by Jerome R. Corsi and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (now Swift Vets and POWs for Truth) co-founder John E. O’Neill as “meticulously researched and reported. … The book has the ring of sincerity to it, and the mark of careful research and writing.”
    * He furthered the false rumor that former Clinton national security adviser Samuel “Sandy” Berger concealed classified national security documents in his socks in order to remove them from the National Archives.
    * He misrepresented a court case to support his argument that journalist Seymour Hersh may have been in violation of the Espionage Act of 1917 for an article he wrote about U.S. military operations in Iran.

I like to take the whole lot of you, Kagen, Rove, Kristol et al and drop you into Iraq or Afghanistan and see if any of you can make it back alive….I doubt any of you overfed wing-nut welfare recipients could get too far.
You’re all useless outside the Beltway or Midtown Manhattan……correct that…you’re all are useless PERIOD.

  99. mary says:

You know Ralph, you have a point there. They do kind of remind me of those little baby groudhogs I have in my back yard! Jumping on each other and knocking each other over. It IS cute!

    eye-paw coordination…. Kkkkkkkkkk

  100. dbadass says:

    pmavrk:
Why was this republican administration as well as Jeb Bush also a republican opposed to drilling off the Fl coast. Ever wonder about that?

  101. mary says:

ralph – Look! Is that another one of those cute baby trolls? He seems to think that it’s the Democrats fault that gas prices are so high! lol

Of course, the fact that the price goes up every time we or Israel threaten another country with military action has NOTHING to do with it!

The fact that Cheney had his oil buddies over for a secret “energy” meeting to divy up Iraq’s oil has NOTHING to do with it.

The fact that gas was under $1.50 before we invaded Iraq has NOTHING to do with it!

    Those pesky details…

  102. ralph the wonder llama says:

I know, mary. When those trollpups prance around with those off-topic talking points in their mouths, it is so ADORABLE. They look so proud, almost like they’ve put together a decent logical argument.

I swear, animated versions of these trollpups would be perfect for a Coca Cola commercial.

  103. TeleMan says:

    JMOHR Says:
This has been the coordinated attack of conservatives and Republican for years against Democrats. It is the politics of ridicule and demeaning your opponent.

You are so right. I just don’t understand why the wimpy Democrat’s let these people get away with this type of childish, school yard behavior. These name callers are the same kids who were sent home with report cards stating “doesn’t play well with others.”

Why can’t we ever have an election about issues?

  104. dbadass says:

Did something startle the little fellers back into the den?

  105. TeleMan says:

By the way, your tax happy government makes more off of a gallon of gas in taxes then the oil companies make off that same gallon in profit.

If that was really the case you would imagine that our gov’t would be making record profits every quarter!

  106. ralph the wonder llama says:

    dbadass Says:
Did something startle the little fellers back into the den?

Yeah. They’re notoriously skittish as pups. Probably because they’re so vulnerable to predators.

  107. ralph the wonder llama says:

Shhh… one has poked its head out of the den again… it’s grappling with inaccurate statistics… damn, i wish I had my camera.

  108. dbadass says:

I’ll run and get my spotting scope. Give me a sec…

  109. StratRat says:

    pmavrk Says:

Did you folks know that the Chinese are drilling for oil 50 miles off the coast of Florida? Did you also know that the democrats have blocked U.S. companies from drilling in just about every oil rich area in North America?

Oil will be gone in about 50-60 years based on the highly inflated reserves the oil companies and countries report. If the resource you depend on to fuel your economy and way of life is running out, shouldn’t we be looking for and developing the next energy source?

The GOP likes things the way they are and they are all waiting for the ‘Rapture’ to take them away to Heaven. The GOP knows global war will develop if we continue to drill for the ever shrinking supply of crude – so to hasten their trip to heaven, they keep demanding that we drill for more and more. The GOP just doesn’t like living people. They adore unborn babies, but they hate living people.

  110. ralph the wonder llama says:

Here’ I’m gonna try something; I’ll dangle this correct statistic in front of it and see if it chases it or if it runs away…

    Trollpup squeaked:

Federal government nation average is around 50 cent that’s not including state and local taxes.

    Reality says:
a summer gas-tax holiday that would suspend the 18.4¢ federal gas tax

  111. TeleMan says:

Oil refineries make around 4 to 5 cents a gallon from refined unleaded gasoline. Federal government nation average is around 50 cent that’s not including state and local taxes.

Okay, using your numbers, being that the oil companies made $120 billion last year, our gov’t should have made 1.2 trillion dollars.

    Someone’s using funny math.

  112. dbadass says:

maybe it is those imaginary numbers we were taught of but never understood the application of

  113. dbadass says:

    ralph,
Don’t you think you should have waited till Marlin Perkins arrived. Maybe not you just handled what Matlin would have just made Jim Fowler do anyway.

  114. helenahandbasket says:

Be afraid, Tony, be very afraid.???

    Obama 2008 = Respect 2009

  115. ralph the wonder llama says:

Hmm… I seem to have startled the trollpup again.

Let’s see if I can draw it out of its den with this little number

    trollpup squeaked:
Oil refineries make around 4 to 5 cents a gallon from refined unleaded gasoline.

    right-wing website says:
Average profit per gallon of gas for oil companies: 10 cents according to the EIA.

And this is from a right-wing website (so it’s likely understated) and is was written when the price of oil was less than it is today (so definitely understated).

Now let’s watch and see if the little feller takes the bait…

  116. dbadass says:

Yeah after all what did the Romans ever do for us?

  117. ralph the wonder llama says:

Why did you leave out state and local gas tax? And what about the oil companies Profits on every gallon of unleaded gasoline?

Hmm… trollpups are not only uncoordinated, they also have poorly developed eyesight, it seems.

Must make a note of that.

  118. ralph the wonder llama says:

    dbadass Says:
Yeah after all what did the Romans ever do for us?

    the aqueduct?

  119. dbadass says:

    pmavrk please see #109

  120. ralph the wonder llama says:

Heeheehee… trollpups are so cute when they get on their haunches and hiss, like they’re fearsome critters or something.

I particularly like the way they blunder ahead, stepping on twigs, rocks and piles of troll poop, oblivious to their missteps and thoroughly convinced they’re the masters of their domain.

They challenge their environment to prove them wrong, then when they’re proven wrong, they pretend like it never happened.

  121. dbadass says:

    well other than the aqueduct?

  122. Zooey says:

And you are bagging on Zooey? File that conflation away under images not needed.

    Ew. What’s “bagging?”

  123. dbadass says:

    careful Zooey…

  124. barfly says:

    pmavrk Says:

Shouldn’t the government be doing something now to help our country make the transition? Instead, the democrats are blocking our ability to free ourselves of dependence on oil from other countries by blocking exploration and extraction of oil here in the US. Does this make sense? Especially when the Chinese are drilling 50 miles off the coast of Florida.

Back in the seventies, oil companies capped hundreds of wells, and they’ve just been sitting there, waiting to be used. The reason they aren’t used, is because the oil has a higher sulfur content, and it would cost more to refine it. They don’t talk about these capped wells, because that would hamper their efforts to get at the coastal oil fields, which has more-easily refinable crude.

    You’re a fool.

    Ponder that.

  128. dporter says:

Tony needs to write a follow-up piece about Bush blathering about how great it would be if only he (Bush) were a dictator.

Tony Blankley might be an “eedjit”. My 8-Ball tells me, “Signs are good.”

    But he’s definitely an a$$hole.

    Cheers,

  130. kasinca says:

If Obama practices all the executive orders of the current administration, he will be acting, just like Dubya, as a dictator. Tony Blankly is as asshat.

  131. dbadass says:

Try and keep it together pmavrk:
Why do you hate your government so? I am also interested in why you condemn the government of what you probably claim to be the greatest nation. Lastly I wonder why you only cite one of the two halfs of the two party system you seem to hate. Concern for the planet crosses party line. You show your cards and prove yourself as a charlatan by making such broad and absurd comments.

  132. dbadass says:

You also defeat you own presmise by such juvenile tactics as “woodgirl”. Clearly that is no typo. Please consider spending some more time in practice and training. Thanks and good luck to you

  133. dbadass says:

Too bad no one is around to see the start of the meltdown…

  134. dbadass says:

Oh jeez. How did I miss the racial fear. You really are a frightened bare I say pussy white boy. Shit…

  136. dbadass says:

Not just your stupid limited view of the world. ANY KIND OF DESCRIMINATION is wrong. Affirmative action is reverse descrimination therefor it is wrong.
    —-
This is probably my favorite part. Well done. Well done.
Now tell us your worldliness. How did you come to this deep comphrehension as compared to say my “limited” view. Ever been to Haiti? Wow did that magnify my view

  137. dbadass says:

maybe you are indeed a backwoods boy and I don’t mean to embarass you or anything but it is spelled just like it sounds… d-b-a-d-a-s-s.

  138. dbadass says:

I little over the top but still mcuh improved. Any chance you might use my “victimhood” as the jumping off point for the next one? Sort of delve deeper into that whole concept. It’ll be a cool dichotomy of the reality of my average Americana white guy experience and your zaniness. Oh yeah, guns are for pussies. Tough guys get their hands dirty

  139. dbadass says:

Oops with the I where the A should have been

  140. dbadass says:

Your work shows effort especially in the bizarre obsessive section of the rubric. Still the amred service people thing is a stretch. Also I am intriqued by the Obama obsession. Myself I really haven’t displayed any srong advocacy there but if it works for you, have at it. What do I care…

  141. Ms_Joanne says:

dumbass, your hatred of white men is very obvious.

Not sure why you hate white men. Personally I cannot think of one non-white individual that signed the declaration of independence and gave his life so that YOU could live in freedom. Can you

Congratulations, you’re even stupider than I thought. Ever heard of Crispus Attucks? Your ignorance is even bigger and uglier than your ego. Hint: try “The Google”, fool.

  145. woodguy says:

    Oh, oh the pain.

  146. woodguy says:

No, you needn’t say more. You’ve proven to one and all that you are a fool and a loser. No more proof neccessary

  147. woodguy says:

The truth is something you must hate. That’s why you’ve been avoiding it all your life. Call me woodgirl, again, will you?
    Sends chills up my…never mind.

Oh, and are you obsessive about everyone’s ears, or just President Obama’s?

  148. Tim43 says:

    Hey dbadass-

I own a gun. Unfortunately I had to use it to scare off a home invasion attempt on my house about 10 years ago. Probably saved my wife and children’s lives.

You said most ignorantly that, and THESE ARE YOUR WORDS, “Oh yeah, guns are for pussies. Tough guys get their hands dirty

I also happen to be a white male. Hmmm, a white guy that owns a gun. Does that make me a pussy too, dbadass?

By your comments dbadass, I think you are a racist. Your racism just happens to be in reverse. But it is still detestable racism.

  149. dbadass says:

    Tim43:
I too am a white male yet don’t by pmavrk’s contention of the “endangered white male”. I think there is selective misinterpretation being employed here. The gun comment was not about guns in and of themselves. It was about fellows that think bringing a gun to a fight makes them tough. I got no beefs with guns for the purpose of military usage, hunting, target practice, or whatever. I simply said it requires far more toughness to battle another with bare hands. Either way, it is of no matter to me.

  150. dbadass says:

    pmavrk:
If you are about, you might want to check in on the Senator Martinez thread above. Seems he doesn’t exactly buy the Chinese oil drilling off Florida thing. Isn’t he a republican? Anyway, it was fun. Hope you had a good day and hope to see ya there
    best-
