Yesterday, Salon’s Alex Koppleman highlighted a Fox News chyron referring to Sen. Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, as “Obama’s Baby Mama,” a term that the Urban Dictionary defines as “the mother of your child(ren), whom you did not marry and with whom you are not currently involved.” After Koppleman pointed out the chyron, ABC’s Jake Tapper remarked that the term’s use was “just straight-up racist.” Here’s the chyron:

Now, Fox Senior Vice President of Programming Bill Shine has put out a statement saying that “a producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron during the segment.”

No kidding.
Will this producer be losing his/her JOB?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pmWhat in the world is a “chyron”?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pmTypical. Say whatever you want, then issue a “poor judgment” bit.
Will this change anything at Fox? No.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pmViewers tuning into Fox News exercise poor judgement when they do so.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pmUN****ING BELIEVABLY!! Even for Faux Noise this is really bad. I wonder what the Wicked Witch on the left split of the screen was spouting about?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pmFox is doubling down.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pmIs there such a thing as a Macaca Season ?
A chyron is the text in the lower third of the screen.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pmxegar:
“Macaca” is the best thing that could have happened in VA that year: “Racist jerk caught on tape, news at 11.” heh.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:26 pmThis apology does very little good unless it is done on the air at a time when the majority of the cretins that watch Faux News are watching.
It’s the same old trick: sling mud in the middle of a crowd, then when everyone goes home tell yourself you’re sorry.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:27 pmAnd when will the press start calling John McCain’s wife his “Sugar Mama?”
June 12th, 2008 at 2:27 pmI think these racist fools have no idea how strong of a woman Michelle Obama is.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:27 pmThere isn’t any indication that FoxSnooze won’t do it again. Oops!
June 12th, 2008 at 2:28 pmnappy headed hoes, anyways
(oh, the air is thick with irony, now, isn’t it?)
June 12th, 2008 at 2:28 pmFox Senior Vice President of Programming Bill Shine has put out a statement saying that “a producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using Michelle Malkin during the segment.”
There. Fixed it for you.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:28 pmAre there any instances on Fox of ‘poor judgement’ regarding Republicans? Ever?
Have they ever had anything to ‘apologize’ for in reagrds to Bush/Cheney/McCain?
Honestly, when can we start ignoring them?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pmFox Producers, watchers, and “talent” please continue speaking your mind, you are too stupid to realize it’ll be the death of you.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pmI kinda hope that Faux DOESN’T learn anything from these flaps. They’ll just drive themselves further and further into the toilet.
Sadly, though, that’s not how the free market works — or at least, as close to a free market as we currently have. They’ll notice that they’re losing viewers, because really the hardcore, ignorant racist block of conservatives is pretty small, and then they’ll try to be more like MSNBC or something.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pmThis is a level of Gratuitous Stupidity that Faux seems to excell at. Just amazing that they get away with this shit.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pmmargerine Says:
What in the world is a “chyron”?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Chyrons are kind of like escalators and band-aids - a former brand name that has become generic. The Chyron Corporation created the first character generator graphics equipment for the broadcast industry in the late 1960s, and the industry soon began to refer to any onscreen characters - particularly in the lower third of the screen - as “chyrons.”
June 12th, 2008 at 2:30 pmYes, “baby momma” is such a common term used on newscasts. No, this is just one more demonstration of a scum bag, right wing propaganda outlet doing everything that it can to help the Republican party. How many times do we see this kind of attack against Democrats? Wrong party affiliation (Repubs always renamed Dems when up for a crime), racial slurs, terrorist affiliation (the bump) and any other possible advantage taken.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:30 pmWhy does the main stream press not other wise come to the aid to put an end to this.
Now, Fox Senior Vice President of Programming Bill Shine has put out a statement saying that “a producer on the program exercised poor judgment in using this chyron during the segment.”
Poor judgement, from Fox? What are the odds? The fact is, this is emblematic of Fox, what “news” organization is going to use this kind of term?
http://progressiveworldreview.com
June 12th, 2008 at 2:30 pmFox ought to do a story about McCain’s current wife - you know, the drug addict/thief one.
Or they could do a story about McCain’s first wife, the one he dumped when she lost her good looks in a car accident.

No kidding. 69 an idiot, you bet.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:33 pmLet’s get the contact info published here for Bill Shine. He won’t be shining very much after the people express their outrage of his permitting such racist, bigoted remarks directed toward the man who will most likely become our next president.
Bill Shine’s office needs to be bombarded with outrage of the people and a threatened total boycott of all of Fox’s programming and sponsors.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:34 pmHonestly, I thought “poor judgment” was a prerequisite for working at Faux news.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:34 pm69 says:
Me fail English? That unpossible!
June 12th, 2008 at 2:34 pmI remember when Jimmy “The Greek” exercised similar poor judgment.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:34 pmFiring Alex Koppelman (racist pig) is not enough although this should be his immediate conclusion. No reprimands; no apologies will be enough. This obvious hatred needs to stop. We ALL know that this young woman (Alex Koppelman) doesn’t have the experience or intelligence to think this up by herself without prompting from the reichstag (aka Fox News).
Go to http://www.foxblocker.com today and express your outrage. Hit this fascist neo-nazi group where it hurts and boycott them as well as any corporation who supports them through advertising.
It’s time for the american people to put Fox in their place.

June 12th, 2008 at 2:37 pmRalph - Poor judgment is putting it mildly. Blind allegiance to the Bush Reichstag is more like it.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:38 pm69,
And you have the “hid” thickness of a used scumbag.
And you also must be a 4th generation racist.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:38 pmThe people need to go for the punishment of this obvious Fox airhead puppet who made this comment; then it’s time to go after the network. Boycott and stop watching anything the Fox network puts out. It’s the only voice we have over them.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:38 pmAMcG773 Says:
And when will the press start calling John McCain’s wife his “Sugar Mama?”
I propose the moniker Cindy McMealTicket :)~
June 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pmHi Zooey! That’s precisely the point. They’re petrified of Michele Obama because she is an empowered, powerful, intelligent woman. They’re scared $hitless of her.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pmsorry….meant michele McMalkin, folks.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pmhow about Michele McWhoreMealTicket?
June 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pmAnd let’s all not forget when Faux had Mark Foley and Duke Cunningham listed as D’s not R’s in their Chyrons when announcing their little “issues”.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pmNext on FAUX News…
June 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pmBarack HUSSEIN Obama spotted exchanging terrorist fist jabs with his baby momma in front of a KFC. News at 11.
They went from terrorist fist jabs to this utter nonsense. What’s next, photo-shopping Obama with bin Laden at an orgy with all white women?

June 12th, 2008 at 2:47 pmAnd she’s no trollopyc*nt, either.
That shirt Anchor Baby Malkin is wearing looks like it contains some terrorist patterns in it.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:48 pmWhat we are witnessing is the swirling in the bowl of the Repug Party as we now know it. And Faux and the rest of the Rightie Wankers can do little to stop it, no matter what they try.
God, I love the smell of Repug flop sweat in the morning!
June 12th, 2008 at 2:49 pmLessee Candy McCane is probably already taken, so Cindy Trollopy McSugarSkank would be second best.

June 12th, 2008 at 2:53 pmMs Malkin was warned. Barack said that if the reichwing went after his wife, the gloves would come off. Let’s see how this plays out. I sense a ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’ moment in MichelleTrollop’s near future.
June 12th, 2008 at 2:53 pmHere’s the Libra (10/20) horoscope for today:
Your talents as a master psychologist could well be put to work today when misunderstandings come up among those around you. Your companions aren’t likely to be thinking straight and may not respond to reassurance, dear Libra, so you’ll need to use your intuition to determine the best way to defuse the situation.

June 12th, 2008 at 2:58 pmWith four and a half months to go, the racism is just getting warmed up. Comments like these will number in the hundreds from fox pundicks by November. Isn’t there some morning show on fox with multiple hosts that make truly asinine comments on a regular basis? There’s no way they’ll go until election day without making multiple racial slurs. Just like Star Trek, somehow only the extras will get canned.

June 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pmGod, I freaking HATE these people.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:35 pmAnd that includes YOU, Prytania, you racist bag of scum.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pmThe problem is — too many people (sheeple?) who flick through channels still don’t know that TV is largely fake. TV news is fake. It has been fake. Fox cable news just happens to be insidiously false. How do we get our next door neighbors to turn off the tube and tune in to where the more real news is?
Shame on you, Fox. But of course, we know what kind of crap you pull. You really deserve to be in stocks, out in a very public square, with a huge sign and LOTS of real media, pointing at you for your disgusting attempts to pander to the peoples’ fears, bigotry, and racism while carrying water for the most illegal, corrupt and impeachment-worthy administration this country has ever had.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pmYeah, right, you racist. Let’s call Laura Bush Chimpy’s babymomma and see how your reichwing pals shriek.
Spare me your racist crap.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:51 pmSometimes a catchy alliteration while trying to use “hip” language can go badly wrong. I do want to get one thing straight, the movie “Baby Mama” was about a single poor black mother? Oh, wait, that wasn’t what the term meant when used for that movie? When you start blaming people when using popular culture terms, you are on a slippery slope with some chance for everyone involved to be stupid.
FYI, “Chyron” is I believe a trade mark name for a particular brand of equipment that generates TV titles. This may not have actually been a “Chyron” it may have been an “Abekas” or a “Sony”, not sure what Fox runs in their news studios.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:03 pmYou fu(king idiot.
“baby mama” is not just slang for a mother. It refers to one of two things — either the unmarried mother of a man’s children, or a young teen who is already a mother, generally also unwed.
Even if you don’t think it’s racist (and if so, you don’t pay attention to modern culture) then you at least have to recognize that it’s incredibly insulting.
If not, there’s no helping you.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:11 pmSure, Prytania - why don’t you say what you REALLY mean?
Go ahead, call Michelle Obama an “uppity n*****r” - we know that’s what you REALLY mean, right?
I mean, she *IS* uppity, isn’t she, Prytania? You know, like you said, she “cuts off Obama when he is speaking” and she obviously hasn’t “learn[ed] her role in this endeavor”, right, Pry? And after all, she is “in fact, black,” right?
June 12th, 2008 at 4:12 pmOh, then the Faux graphic that “went horribly wrong” meant that Michelle Obama carried someone else’s child in her womb?
Oh, wait, wasn’t that what the movie was about? No? Any more stupid points to make to try to defend the indefensible?
June 12th, 2008 at 4:13 pmJebus, Ralph - what the everlovin’ flock is WRONG with these people???
June 12th, 2008 at 4:15 pmmaybe i use this as yet another opportunity to point out that Malkin looks like a sunburned baboon? Any men who find her attractive must be dealing with some serious gender confusion issues..not that theres anything wrong with that..just sayin..
June 12th, 2008 at 4:17 pmI don’t know, Annie… I don’t know.
(ralph shakes head)
June 12th, 2008 at 4:20 pmActually, it’s Fox’s viewers that have the judgement problem.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:24 pmfox’s going down. they are known to use chyrons as some kind of sick joke that only the repugs understand. this is just more proof that fox is a phony organization.
fox news is the pro-wrestling of news.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:29 pmPrytania,
As this campaign moves forward, Michele O will make Ms. Beer Lady look like the Socialite Elitist that she is. Now THAT won’t be of much help to Johnny Boy, in the least. Also, some good pictures of his dumped wife with her story will be refreshing, too.
And it will be SOOO good to get a strong woman in the WH, to offset the Stepford-wife Laura we have now.
And, I know there will be the missing teeth trailer trash bigots who watch too much Pro wrestling and reality tv that won’t vote for him, but luckily, their numbers have dwindled as their inbred gene pool has caused their inability to ‘figger owt’ how to pull the levers in the booth.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:33 pmI have a prediction:
Fox News will become so offensive that they will piss off their own off-air employees and that those employees will retaliate. Live broadcasts will become the thing watch to see if things begin falling onto the set.
Hell, if it made their ratings go up, the peons might even get bonuses.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:33 pmIn regards to Fox “news,” poor judgment is redundant.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:34 pmExercised poor judgement and the consequences of that are…what?

I’m not even going to get into your “Baby Mama” remarks — your ignorance speaks for itself.
Surely you can find some way to support your candidate without resorting to lying smears about the opposing candidate? Do you have any VALID objections to Obama?
June 12th, 2008 at 4:42 pmThis isn’t “poor judgement” it’s white supremacy talking points. It’s a form of keeping Sen. Obama down. It’s a psychological racism filled game passed down from generation to generation. This is wayyyy deeper than “poor judgement.”
June 12th, 2008 at 4:43 pmPyromania,
please show me where she’s ever, EVER, used the term “Whitey”.
Or, here’s an even better idea,
STFU!
Thank you, have a nice day.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:46 pmHere’s a hint, Prytania:
“Spearchucker” is racist. I know, I know, it can mean “one who competes in the javelin” (which was the sly justification for using that term as Fred “The Hammer” Williamson’s character in M*A*S*H), but trust me on this. It’s racist. Stupid and juvenile, but definitely racist.
Now, it went out of fashion for you people a few decades ago, but you don’t seem too “hip” so I figured it might still pose a danger for you if you called one of your many African-American friends by this particular term.
Similarly, if he calls you “Honky” in return, you have cause to get upset.
Hope this helps.

June 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pmPry, are you kidding? I never saw the bs you just made-up. You are why I want change and unity in the USA. I do prefer your kind to say away from me and my family. Ignorance is deadly.

June 12th, 2008 at 5:03 pmDRxj: this troll doesn’t make sense, Sen. Obama family is racially diverse, his children are white. So the troll is saying Michelle hates her kids and her husband.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:09 pmUm… perhaps because HE’s the one running for President, not her?
And perhaps because he has some sense of gentility (awfully elitist concept, that) and some sense of decorum and expects the press and Republicans to treat a candidate’s wife with some modicum of decency, even respect?
Yeah, it’s a naive hope, especially given the track record of Republicans in this area, but you gotta give him credit for trying.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:17 pmPry,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a liberal and being the “most liberal” is surely a bonus.
Look at what your chimpy did to the US and the world. I’m sure you know your shit, and you should chose the next President. I’m sure over 85% of the public are wrong and you are right. You’re a primer troll.

June 12th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
His lack of experience for one missmolly. Nobody equates the low approval ratings for the Senate, which Obama is a part of. I know Mc Cain is a Senator, but he was not my candidate. Senators vote on laws and approve money. They do a few other things, poorly, and they don’t have the experience that Governor’s or the General’s have. We still don’t have any clue as to who he will name to certain cabinet posistions. He is the highest rated liberal in the Senate. He’s already said he is going to raise taxes. Zereo foreign policy experience is what scares me the most. And right now his only positive is, “Change”. I agree we need change. But in the times that we are in, and the mess that needs to be cleaned up, I do not feel that someone as inexperienced as Obama is, is the right choice. I have many friends who voted for Hillary in the primaries, and they are feeling the same thing.
_________________________________________________
OK, let’s take your arguments one at a time.
1. “His lack of experience.” It’s true that McCain has more years as a Senator than Obama does. However, Obama has 12 years of experience holding elected office, which is more than Dubya had when he was elected. Or Ronald Reagan. Or Jimmy Carter. Or several others. He even has more years holding elected office than Hillary, yet Hillary spend a good portion of her campaign touting her “experience”. I guess it all boils down to what “experience” you are looking for.
2. “Low approval ratings of the Senate.” You’re going to blame Obama for that? Hillary Clinton and John McCain are also U.S. Senators. The Congressional approval rating as a whole is quite low, but Obama’s rating among his constituents is quite high.
3. “Senators don’t have the experience that Governors and Generals have.” This is true. However, Governors don’t have the experience that people who hold national office have. And as a Senator, he already has more foreign policy experience than any Governor.
4. “He is the ‘highest rated liberal’ in the Senate.” What does that mean, exactly? That he is considered to be the “most liberal”? Or he has the highest quality rating among the liberal Senators? And who is doing this rating? Surely he’s not more liberal than Ted Kennedy, or Barbara Mikulsi, or several others I can think of. In fact, on some issues, I wish Obama was more liberal than he is.
5. “He’s already said he is going to raise taxes.” Yes — on the richest Americans who have been benefitting by tax cuts that are bankrupting us. Obama is merely going to restore the tax rates that were in place during the Clinton era. And you may recall that Clinton undid the Reagan tax cuts for the rich and our economy didn’t suffer. In fact, the economy during the Clinton years was pretty good.
6. “Zero foreign policy experience is what scares me the most.” Um…Dubya came into office with less foreign policy experience than Obama has now. That didn’t scare you? It should have. See #3.
OK — so who do YOU think is a better choice? McCain? The guy who wants to keep the situation in Iraq going on indefinitely? The guy who wants to bomb Iran? The guy who is so controlled by lobbyists that he flip-flops on virtually every issue? The guy who wants to cut taxes for the rich even more than they are now AND wants to cut taxes for corporations? They guy who thinks that the best way to deal with the health care crisis is more deregulation? THAT guy?

________________________________________________
So I guess you will be staying home in November? Or are you going to vote for a third party candidate? Or are you going to keep your mind open and make your decision later?
Yes, I know it sucks when you don’t like either one of the two major party candidates. Heaven knows that’s happened to me often enough. Fortunately, I like one of them this year, and I can go into the voting booth with optimism instead of just voting for the “least objectionable”.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:55 pmDon’t you mean just “he’s black”, Prytania?
His age has nothing to do with it. His experience? More of the reichwing smoke you’re trying to blow up our asses - he has more relevant experience than Chimpy, but that didn’t stop you morons from voting for *him*, did it?
Obama’s got a HUGE brain and a reputation for being cool and calm under pressure. He’s respected by his constituents and his collegues - and the rest of the world, for that matter.

You have no way to refute my words - so you resort to posting ad hominem attacks. Nice going, racist. Lame. Lame. Lame.
Screw you, racist trash.

June 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pmAnd I think the worst nightmare would be to wake up after a long night at a bar and have either Malkin, Ingraham or coultergeist in bed next to you.

June 13th, 2008 at 12:20 pmHave we forgotten when Michelle Obama introduced her husband as “my baby’s daddy” when he won the senate seat in 2004!!!!!
Seriously…she used the term herself, and now its coming back to haunt her….please, get over it! and check your facts!
If you want to have a leg to stand on when fighting against inappropriate language you certaintly cannot use that language yourself!
June 13th, 2008 at 1:36 pmI really think these idiots have no clue they’re being racist at all. They’re so used to acting that way.
This is more about the realization and resistance to change these behaviors they’ve been engaging in since birth, than anything their candidate of last resort (McCain) represents.
