Poll: World has more ‘confidence’ in Obama than McCain.

A new Pew poll surveying 24 countries finds that there is “a widespread belief that U.S. foreign policy ‘will change for the better‘ after the inauguration of a new American president next year”:

People around the world who have been paying attention to the American election express more confidence in Barack Obama than in John McCain to do the right thing regarding world affairs. McCain is rated lower than Obama in every country surveyed, except for the United States where his rating matches Obama’s, as well as in Jordan and Pakistan where few people have confidence in either candidate.

Today, however, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said that he has a “personal preference” for McCain because he “would no longer be the oldest person at the upcoming (Group of Eight summits).” McCain is a month older than the 71-year-old Berlusconi.

One more example of the sound decision-making process conservatives use when faced with world challenges.

Big deal. The “Rest of the World”? What the hell do they know? have they heard that Obama doesn’t wear a flag lapel pin? Huh???

  4. StratRat says:

The rest of the world hasn’t been drinking the kool-aid. They knew in 2000 the GOP was a loser.

  5. Buckie Boy says:

Certainly shows that the rest of the world is a heck of alot smarter than the US.

  6. misshusseinmolly says:

I think the world is anxious for change — certainly a change in the way the U.S. has conducted its foreign policy over the past 7-1/2 years — and they obviously see McCain as more of the same.

I find it interesting that Israel isn’t on that list — what do they think?

  7. nanlichi says:

What the hell? We spend $3 trillion of our money and waste the lives of tens of thousands of our best soldiers on Bush’s War to make the world safer and this how we are thanked?

How about if we pick, say France to win their hearts and minds next?

Sheesh. Bunch of damn ingrates. Wouldn’t recognize a visionary leader if they stepped in one.

I don’t know if it was an apocryphal mmoment or not, but I remember reading from an account of the Chimp’s visit to the Hermitage in St Petersberg, where he was seen flipping a wad of chewed gum into a priceless enamel vase by one door. True or not, it defined for EVER what a parvenu I thereafer knew the fothermucker to be…

  14. belac says:

    Tokin librul-
The strangest thing about Bush is that he isn’t a parvenu he just chooses to act like one… he’s old money that pretends its ‘of the people’ in order to better ’screw the people’
    also, I don’t think he’s all that bright…

And occupy their off-time with talk of favorite laxatives, and priapic misadventures.

  16. pete says:

I think that any who had doubts were convinced when Bush started playing “army men” with real lives, especially innocent civilians. Much of the world doesn’t share the neocon view on the relevance of “collateral damage”.

And even a 180 degree change in foreign policy, plus the casting out of all things neocon, may not be enough to keep the rest of the world from paying us back in kind.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain running his country into the ground, after all- there are other ‘leaders’ who did bad stuff too!

Actually, this is about the confidence people in other countries who are closely or somewhat closely following the election in our country have in the two potential leaders.

Read all the way through and the posts make so much more sense, rogerse!

  20. gitrdone says:

You guys need to understand that most countries around the world have a free media that is not corporate driven to the extent that it is in the U.S. When you have the likes of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News contradicting what is reported in the free press, people will tend to get confused and vote against their best interests thinking that they are doing the right thing when in fact they have been bamboozled. This would explain the discrepency between the U.S and the world in this poll.

  21. Keith H. says:

They only made six calls in the U.S., three to ordinary citizens, the other three to the freaks singing It’s Rainin’ McCain.

  22. pete says:

    Roger, roger, roger.

Don’t you realize that to be a good neocon you can’t be concerned with what other nations think about themselves and each other? The only things that matter, to a good little neocon, are what we think of them and they think of us. Hells-bells! Georgie killed Saddam, and bombed his country back to the stone age, because big, bad, Saddam said mean things about us.

  23. pete says:

You raise a good point gitrdone. The “pundits” need to be held accoutaible to some standard. Currently they can say “it’s entertainment” when they say something offensive and say “it’s news” when they think they should be taken seriously. “Infotainment” has got to go.

  24. Badger says:

In the aftermath of Sept 11, we had the sympathy of the world, the moral highground, and a golden opportunity to defeat those that attacked us.

Bush has SQUANDERED all of it…the world knows it.

Try thinking for yourself, think about how both parties are limiting our freedom.

Maybe when Obama wins he can decide to ignore the warnings of the outgoing admin, ignore Osama, and say he’s tired of the U.S. ’swatting at flies’ and then squander any goodwill and political catchet the U.S. may have built up over the years on some personal vendetta…

Oh, wait- no, we already had one of those- his name was B-something?

Once Obama wins I expect to see prosecution of actual terrorists like bin Laden increase and persecution of pretend terrorists like librarians go down.

    Can’t wait!!!

  28. backup says:

Americans shouldn’t choose their leader based on a candidates popularity abroad.

But, if they do choose Obama as the best candidate, the world approval would be nice for a change.

  29. backup says:

    “Infotainment” has got to go.

pete. you are right on with this. It’s gotten to the point where most anchors have stopped pretending they’re not biased. Instead of news, its more like propaganda camps. Pick the station that says what you want to hear. (and don’t forget to support the sponsors).

  30. pete says:

Oddly enough, B-kup, many groups of foreigners are more educated about America’s affairs than their counterparts in this country. In light of the fact that we’ve been under the heel of a tyrant for 7.5 years, they might have a certain depth of perspective we lack. After all, much of the world was wise enough to start divesting in the good ol’ U.S.A. as soon as Chimpy was confirmed as President elect. I’ve learned to pay attention to their input.

  31. pete says:

I used to think it didn’t take much smarts to know the difference between news and titillation. Now? I’m not so sure.

I remember my stepmother watching ET and Hard Copy when they were original. My how I laughed. Then, I realized that there were people who thought it was news!

I don’t know why it still amazes me that people can swallow the schlock. Tabloids have been popular since some clever bastard carved, “Essau kissed ______” on a piece of stone. I mean, Oprah freakin’ Winfrey is rich and powerful?

TV doesn’t need ratings and disclaimers for kids. It needs them for the mush-heads who vote despite their ignorance.

All well and good, but you Stealth Republicans, or Libertarians as you like to call yourselves, are corporatists at your core. You favor privatization and “Bottom Line” politics. As long as Right Wingers put corporations first over people, Socialism that emphasizes individuality will be the goal. Of course, Socialism that puts the government in total control is Communism, likewise Corporatism/Capitaism can easily become Fascism.

Essentially, the term “We The People” is what our goal should be. A government that is run by individuals and for individuals. Corporations can never be “For The People”, so as long as you Libertarians keep up the insane Privatization Mantra, you will not be taken seriously.

  33. pete says:

I’m with you Brain. And, might I add?

The overwhelming problem in American government today is a gang of criminals who have seized the Executive and Judicial branches of government. This is bad. The administration merely uses a slavish Judicial branch to deflect any attempts at oversight.

So, there are now two BIG tasks. First, we need to vote out every neocon, Republicriminals, Bushite we can. Then, we have to hope that the new Executive and Legislative branches, united in a super-majority, can quickly fumigate the Judicial branch and restore impartiality to the one Branch which demands it at all costs.

I’m sure we all have misgivings. The Dems could fall to bickering amongst themselves, they could succumb to the temptation of real power, they could eff up in many ways. But, they will be different than Bushco and almost certainly better.

The messes Bushco has made require a fresh approach. And the Dems are the only other viable option. And if Obama does nothing else he could do much, to be acclaimed a great success, by careful choice of his Attorney General.

Who cares about the rest of the world. If we withdraw from this Global Free Trade crap, the world’s economy would collapse. So screw the world.
Also we have 10,000 Nukes, we need to remind people of that.

  35. belac says:

Also we have 10,000 Nukes, we need to remind people of that.

The world is plenty aware of that, believe me… that’s why they’d have more confidence in an Obama admin. Ya see, when you righties shoot off your mouth about the rest of the world going to hell and we’re #1, well, the world used to laugh that off.
But since Bush started turning your flippancy into our foreign policy the world has been getting a little nervous.
Nukes are for adults, you guys shouldn’t get to have them until ya grow up, thanks!

  36. pete says:

    O.K. Vulture. I’ll bite. Here’s a chance to prove you’re not stupid.

Question: If the U.S. withdrew from “this Global Free Trade crap”, which part of the Worlds economy would collapse first?

  37. Leftside Annie says:

Ah, yes. One of those stupid Americans has dropped a giant load of what passes for “wisdom” but is, in reality, nothing but sh*t. Thanks for sharing, Vulture.

Now you better go – the short bus is leaving without you.

  38. The Vulture says:

Actually Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda will be 72 next month. I wonder if it’s beyond Berlusconi to think of non-white people, or is he up enough on Japanese news to realize that Fukuda will probably not be Prime Minister by the time the 2009 G8 Summit rolls around?

johnsom Says:The rest of the world?!? What the hell do they know?

    HA!

If ever there was a reason for voting for McCain, that’s it

Johnsom must have amnesia concerning the reign of error of George Bush.
Bush has ruined this country, and this poster what does the rest of the world know?
He proves what he knows>>>>>nada !
