National Press Club Calendar Promoted Sinclair Smear Event As The ‘Truth’ About Obama
A Minnesota man named Larry Sinclair has been going around the country spreading unfounded rumors about Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Among other claims, he alleges that he and Obama used cocaine together and participated in homosexual acts in 1999. Sinclair’s claims are completely without any merit. He even took — and failed — a polygraph test.
Nevertheless, Sinclair will be speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on June 18. Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake has pointed out that an event such as Sinclair’s is in keeping with neither the NPC’s purpose nor its ethics:
Purpose: “The Club shall provide people who gather and disseminate news a center for the advancement of their professional standards and skills, the promotion of free expression, mutual support and social fellowship.”
Ethics: “I believe that advertising, news and editorial columns should alike serve the best interests of readers; that a single standard of helpful truth and cleanness should prevail for all; that supreme test of good journalism is the measure of its public service.”
NPC president Sylvia Smith has defended the event, stating, “I’m not aware that we’ve ever turned anybody away for content.” But might the NPC be getting nervous about lending its “sheen of legitimacy” to Sinclair? The official NPC calendar used to promote the event as the “truth” about Obama:
This description has now been changed to simply read, “Larry Sinclair on Barack Obama.” It is unclear whether this description was changed by the NPC or the Sinclair organizers. An employee at the NPC told ThinkProgress that she was unaware who changed this particular description, but that generally, they are changed only at the request of the organizers.
Firedoglake is circulating a petition — which so far has more than 7,000 signatures — asking the NPC to cancel the event.

I was, in my youth, a journalism major. The very foundation of what our professors taught us in those days was truth, honesty, and verify. The depths to which the journalism profession has sunk, as demonstrated by the National Press Club itself, shames me that I ever aspired to belong.
I believe that this kind of behavior by so called journalists is the culmination of merging news and entertainment in the media. The profession can no longer tell the difference and so has lost its role as the journalers or our times. Filtering out the frauds, the liars, and the delusional is the obligation of honest journalism. We really do need to get some grown ups back in charge.

Perhaps we can try and take a step back to look at it from a different persective; perhaps a broader view and grander scale – and possible the cause and effect of certain actions. How do we know for a fact the NPC was not given at least a thread of evidence to allow such meeting to take place? Besides that, NPC is an institution built on the principle of protecting the 1st Amendment rights of every American Citizen. If they allow themselves to be pushed to silence Larry and prevent him from exercising his 1st Amendment rights, they will be setting a precedent in which could be argued in a court of law to allow more of the same silencing in the future. In addition, has there been history of other “girl-friends” of other presidential candidates that have used NPC as a catalyst for their first amendment rights? Yes? No? If so, why is it ok for them to go on TV but not Larry? Because he is a guy? It seems he just wants to be heard. He and his legal team feels they have enough evidence to deflect slander/libel cases against him by the other party. Please do not compare Larry with other radical parties. There is a difference. Larry seems to just want to be heard then go on with his life knowing he did the right thing and reveal possible untruths. Radical parties are bent on destruction. There seems to be no malice in what Larry has to say. In closing, according to blogs, there seems to be a much grander scale of events and people than just the drugs/sex theme that will be revealed. This event will also be live broadcasted on the web to prevent the MSM from overshadowing the press conference with major headlines or afternoon review about Michelle Obama’s appearance on the View the same day. Watch, listen, and do some of your own research, think, debate. This is what school teaches you to do…why? With regard to Larry Sinclair’s allegations against Barack Obama, note that while there are numerous reasons to doubt Sinclair’s story, his polygraph results are not among them. Polygraph testing has no scientific basis. It’s inherently biased against the truthful, and yet easily passed — truthful or not — through the use of simple countermeasures.
Complicating matters with regard to Mr. Sinclair’s polygraph results is the fact that the person who administered the test is a phony Ph.D. and that with regard to at least one of the areas concerning which Sinclair was polygraphed, the results of Gelb’s hand scoring were contradicted by computerized scoring.
This is not to say that the polygraph results actually support Sinclair’s credibility. They don’t. Because polygraph testing has no scientific basis, the results are evidence of nothing. It is as wrong for progressives to cite polygraph results to discredit Sinclair as it would be for Obama’s detractors to cite a hypothetical passed polygraph to bolster his claims.

I’m still digging…But what I have found out so far he doesn’t even have any witnesses or receipts to back up any of his statements. In Journalism before you can publish a story you have to have two credible sources, I think that is why the MSM hasn’t given him a platform. Which begs the question why is the NPC?
