In an interview with former UN ambassador John Bolton today, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett asserted that Iran’s Shahab missile “could actually hit — I think — some military installations in the United States.” “Absolutely,” replied Bolton, clarifying that it was “U.S. forces stationed in the region” that could be threatened by such a missile. Watch it:
The current range of Iran’s Shahab missiles is said to be 1,200 miles, but the United States and Iran are much more than 1,200 miles apart. The approximate distance between Tehran and Washington, D.C. is actually 6,340 miles.
UPDATE: In response to this post, Jarrett informed ThinkProgress that he did not say Iran’s Shahab missile could hit military installations “in” the United States. “Those were not my words,” Jarrett told us. “I said the Shahab missile could hit military installations ‘of’ the United States.” We regret the error.
Employing the same logic that allows the earth to be 6000 years old
June 16th, 2008 at 10:01 pmWhat a moronic warmongering LIAR!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pmHeh. Those must be dog miles.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pmThere is the law of physics in the Republican party. 1,250 miles and 6,340 miles are the same thing damn it, and to disagree is just appeasing our enemies.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:04 pmI think he's taking into consideration that the world is flat.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pmConsidering reich-wingers do not believe in science, math, facts, reason, and reality, it's not a surprise that these useless twits "think" 1,200 miles = 6,340 miles.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pmWhat FOX, Bolton, and the neocons are really saying that Iraq IS the USA, therefore the missiles could reach. Missiles, war, and death give Bolton the same feeling up his leg Matthews got from watching Obama speak.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:14 pmMaybe their sneak attack uses a "relay" strategy. Each missile travels 1,200 miles, then passes off to the next missile which goes another 1,200 miles, and then, well, you get the picture.
With this brilliant plan, it would only take 6 missiles to reach US soil!
I don't know about all of you, but I'm really, really scared, just like I'm told to be. Thank goodness we have the GOP neocons to protect us from harm!
PEACE
June 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pmone should always refer to John Bolton as:
"former Recess-appointed and unconfirmed by Congress UN ambassador John Bolton"
June 16th, 2008 at 10:18 pmwhy let a little thing like that get in the way of a brand new war?
June 16th, 2008 at 10:25 pmEven if Jarrett was wrong about Iran's ability to target the US, Bolton is right that military installations in the region could be targeted. Such as Iraq or Afghanistan.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pmThis sounds familiar. Here we go again.
12/15/03: (FLORIDA TODAY) U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said Monday the Bush administration last year told him and other senators that Iraq not only had weapons of mass destruction, but they had the means to deliver them to East Coast cities.

June 16th, 2008 at 10:45 pmRemember those Iraqi WMDs hitting England in 45 minutes or those drones being launched and hitting the USA?
Best is Hussein's poisonous gas Bean Factory. He and his army would eat the beans, point their arses at the US troops, and light up!
I am expecting Bolton to short circuit one day, with smoke coming out of his ears. Stupid Walrus!

June 16th, 2008 at 11:01 pmwoodguy Says:
I was going to ask if these missiles were built at the same super-secret factory that produced Saddam’s deadly drones.
Probably.
The publicity department called "BushLaden Productions" is busy again. Before is was resuscitating a dead guy and putting in three or four doubles, some with fat noses, others with shorter foreheads, and others with different colored skin. Then we had Gas Bombs, Drones, Yellow Cake, Mushroom Clouds, suitcase nukes, and Arabs dressed as Mexicans coming across the border in Texas. Now it is launching missiles from Iran and hitting US cites and troops. Man, the Mossad, CIA, ExxonMobil, AIPAC, NeoCons, Likud, Lockheed, GE, Northrup, Pentagon, and Fundamentalists really are an insane lot, and their Cro-Magnon head-bashing genetics are really dominant.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:15 pmSure, it could hit our military installations in the fifty first state.
You know, Iraq.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:15 pmIn short:
The threats are directed at Israel, forces of the United Sates of America and our European allies.
What about Pakistan? India? Russia?
Those other countries with Nuclear weapons. Our Allies.
Or any of the myriad republics therein that don't, and are active or tentative allies.
And don't forget North Korean. Mentioned twice, I do believe, along with Iran. And the Pakistani Physicist whom is accused; and denies, responsibility.
Who is vulnerable to them?
Not John Bolton, that's for certain.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:17 pmEven if Jarrett was wrong about Iran’s ability to target the US, Bolton is right that military installations in the region could be targeted. Such as Iraq or Afghanistan.
Why would Iran risk being vaporized by the US just to launch one bomb which they don't have. Neocons...the most idiotic subspecies on the planet.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:20 pmBTW since this is only a 34 second clip you really don't know what the larger topic of discussion might have been, but it might have been this:
Does Iran have blueprints for a miniature nuclear warhead?
http://deepbackground.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/06/16/1146991.aspx
June 16th, 2008 at 11:21 pmYou fu(king people must run from your own shadow...I can't imagine being so scared of anything. To repeat this famous quote, The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. What a bunch of chicken shits!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pmIf they do, and it's a big IF, they still do not have a platform to deliver it to the US. That's the topic of this thread.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:28 pmDidn't you hear the Chinese are drilling off the Cuban coast? And that the Islamist armies are in cahoots with the godless Chinese & Cuban?
That's how the Iranian missiles would reach the US: Iran then China then Cuba. What's so difficult to imagine about that?
Silly libs....
/sarc off
June 16th, 2008 at 11:30 pmCan you imagine: Iran invades and occupies Mexico, all based on lies, and then claims that the US's weapons are threatening its troops there!!!
At the time we invaded Iraq, we had 24,000 TONS of sarin, vx, and mustard gas. Anniston, Alabama had 77,000 rockets of sarin and vx.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:31 pmAnother Chris Says:
so we bomb them, right?
%
June 16th, 2008 at 11:31 pmNo need to hit the US or Iraq. All Iran has to do is blow-the-shit-out-of the Saudi Arabian oil fields and the US (and world) is toast.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:32 pmDoes Iran have blueprints for a miniature nuclear warhead?
Does Iran still want a rematch with the Greek to avenge the Thermopylae?
Does Iran want to re-create their once mighty empire?
Does Iran want to invade their neighbors and former Soviet republics?
(See? I can also ask crackpot questions)
June 16th, 2008 at 11:36 pmUS rule on other countries: All countries the US considers enemies are not allowed to have a missle that can cross it's own border. Water and cap guns are allowed.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:36 pmHe and others noted that while the proliferation of weapons design technology is indeed troubling, "bomb design is the least challenging part of the weapons development process. Acquiring fissile material--the enriched uranium or plutonium--is the long pole in the tent, the most challenging part." Khan, he noted, was responsible for uranium-enrichment efforts, while the bomb design was part of another section of the Pakistani nuclear program. From another Chris's link.
Well Saddam attacked the US with airplanes, loaded with fuel, doesnt that mean that DONT have nuclear abilities? Saddam had no nukes. Neither did Afghanistan.
Why then the obsession with nukes?
June 16th, 2008 at 11:41 pmI meant Osama, not Saddam, my bad
June 16th, 2008 at 11:42 pm"Does Iran have blueprints for a miniature nuclear warhead?"
Not likely.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:47 pmThe US, by the way, already has the miniature nukes, and there are certainly some Pentagon folks itching to use them.....
Why then the obsession with nukes?
Because they are so scary...and, and the sky is falling...and, and, and Clinton did it too...
No contest!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:49 pmHow has the level of so-called political discourse come to this? Seriously.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:01 amOff-Topic, but just saw this story. Nothing we perhaps didn't already suspect. Why do these guys wait until they retire, though? The pressure must be tremendous on them.

"'They had a gigantic amount of costs they couldn't justify," retired Army official Charles M. Smith told the Times in a story posted on its Web site Monday night. "Ultimately, the money that was going to KBR was money being taken away from the troops, and I wasn't going to do that.'"

June 17th, 2008 at 12:06 amOMG! OMG! 45 minutes!
June 17th, 2008 at 12:07 amLet's see. I'm supposed to be scared shitless because a neocon chickenhawk says Iran might have the capability to launch a missile that may also possess the capability of travelling about 5 times farther than its designed and could possibly hit the U.S. Now any rational person would know that if Iran was that stupid (just in case they actually have this wonder missile) to launch a missile toward the U.S. that they would be giving the neocon chickenhawks a big, giant green light to have their glorious, romantic battle with Iran. The only thing we may have to fear from Iran is the fact it exists and Cheney, Bolton, Bush and the rest of the neocon chickenhawks are in a crazed frenzy to attack it further eroding our standing in the world and driving up oil prices to even more absurd levels. And also many more American military personnel dead for nothing but to feed their powermad desire to control the world's oil and treat the rest of us like cattle.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:09 amWhy do they trot out this worthless shill and quote him as if anything he has done or said was credible, realistic or of value to advancing American integrity? Walrus was appointed, never confirmed and like Bush soiled the office he temporarily occupied - so now the failed "diplomat' has become a "ARMS EXPERT"??? Guess some shit you just CAN"T scrape off your shoe . . .
June 17th, 2008 at 12:13 amCan anyone tell me why we should believe someone with a milk mustache?
June 17th, 2008 at 12:21 amWhy should we worry about a missile from any country with that Zillion Dollar Starwars defense that we have which started with Reagan?
June 17th, 2008 at 12:35 amNext, we'll have the displeasure of having them parade Newt out there for his twisted version of the dire necessity to attack Iran. FOX and the rest of the MSM keep trying to sell us this rotted meat but, their delusional state keeps them from realizing that we're not buying it. Right now, the only entity that deserves to be attacked is FOX News.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:36 amIn an interview with former UN ambassador John Bolton today, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett asserted..

The idea that bolton gets face time even from fox is disturbing.
#49 jess - ha!!! - in a nutshell!!! - bolton makes me physically ill each time he pops up to pound the fixed noise neocon drums for war against iran - ambassador to no-one,expert on nothing and not much of anything - note how this guy along with kristol, podhoretz and the likes never suggest a 'what next' strategy after the dust on their wet dream settles - and also, since when were iran's missiles an issue? - i thought it was their nuclear programme??....or was it their training al qaeda??...or....something....and one last thing bolton, you ass clown,if iran are the biggest state sponsors of terror, then why is there NOT ONE iranian on the fbi's most wanted terrorist list?
June 17th, 2008 at 12:51 amyes and I'm sure the missile flies faster than the speed of light...

June 17th, 2008 at 1:49 amI suspect most Bush loyalists at this point are not blind to the fact that Iran stands in the way of a Pax Americana in the Middle East, and only morons continue to believe whatever comes out of the mouth of anyone associated with this administration.
Although both loyalists and morons try hard to justify another American preemptive strike against a country that poses no threat to the US.
So, Another Chris, you are either an uncaring warmonger or a brain dead idiot. Which one are you?

June 17th, 2008 at 2:56 amThese people need to be tied to a missile and launched. If Americans are so damned stupid as to believe these people then they just get what they deserve . . . an end to America as a viable power.
Ain't no dumb like Republican dumb.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:14 amwell the GOP base was ignorant enough to believe the Bush administration's assertion that the Iraqis had a missile that could reach New York City in 45 minutes...
June 17th, 2008 at 3:51 amOooh, we got a Foghorn Leghorn sighting!!!! Seriously this is the rare person that makes Bush seem sensible.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:53 amAh, the Iranians now have an ICBM, who knew. Of course the real threat is the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator. We are screwed now that they have both.
June 17th, 2008 at 4:16 amI heard yesterday that in Cuba there is a team of Irani builders waiting to come to the US mainland and add minurets to churches that will be converted for use by Muslims. In addition to external preperatioins, Iranis already living here have been sending information home about the location of virgins to be used in sacrificial ceremonies upon the overthrow of the United States.
You know if I heard it then it must be true since, as I have learned in my 64 years, no person (politicians in particular)has ever, ever, lied to me.

June 17th, 2008 at 5:30 amNothing like two idiots trying to act like they have just a bit of intelligence. They don't care about truth or fact, just spin things whatever way they want - especially Bolton.

However, if he is saying "military installations IN the United States", why is he specifying only military installations... why doesn't he say "the US mainland"? Bolton certainly didn't respond as if Jarret said "IN the US".

June 17th, 2008 at 8:14 amThese blabbing bobbleheads have perfected the art of fast, disjointed, and poorly enunciated speech.
I'm imagining there are few listeners of theirs who actually listen with any discrimination.
And, to be fair, TP can subtly twist verbage to create an attention grabbing headline as well.
"Nice try!"
Hey, I said I imagined there might be a few listeners paying attention...
Of course, you would have totally missed it if Watcher hadn't brought it to our attention.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:16 amThe bottom line is this... if we attack Iran, then Iran will attack our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that will be the end of our military. There is no f'n way that Iran can send missiles over here unless they have bases in Cananda, Mexico or Cuba. Russia and China have the capability to send missiles to our shores and who knows, if we attack and threaten their oil interests in Iran, they may feel a need to retaliate.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:17 amBesides, why go to the bother of attacking the United States?
We're doing enough damage to ourselves already through sheer neglect of populace, economy and infrastructure. The rest of the world can kick back and watch us flood ourselves in toxic waste and then wash out to sea.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:22 am"Military installations OF the United States" is pretty awkward. By your own logic, why doesn't he say, "U.S. military installations"? you're right, though, it's not clear--bit of a hiccup or something there, maybe some slight retardation. Gump-like.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:25 amListen, that 1200 mile missile can go 6340 miles. The Iranians have built giant slingshots every 1000 miles to fire out the missiles after they intercept them before crashing. It's ingenious!
June 17th, 2008 at 8:33 amWith pathological war-mongers and death lovers like Bush and Cheney in the White House there is no way any country would "attack" or even threaten US interests. These blood-thirsty neocons only need a fraction of a reason to bomb anyone any where. Guys like Bolton only know war and death and destruction--diplomacy is beyond their intellect.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:34 amWho can believe ANYTHING they say?
June 17th, 2008 at 8:35 amWere they right about WMD's and the mushroom cloud?
Bolton's resume clearly reflects deficient skills as a diplomat and cherry picking intelligence.
Are these clueless neocons paying attention to Afghanistan and Pakistan where the Taliban are in full force? Let them go fight there and get their rocks off.
All they are saying, is give war a chance... and another chance.... and another chance. Peace, ha! No profit to be made from that!
June 17th, 2008 at 8:37 amRemember this number from 2002? It's an oldie, but a goodie.
"We've also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas. We're concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVS for missions targeting the United States."- George W. Bush October 7, 2002
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/10/20021007-8.html
June 17th, 2008 at 8:38 amLOL - Good point. Iran must have some hidden platforms across the ocean that will pop up out of the water and that's when the slingshots take over. I wonder why our satellite system didn't pick up on the building of these platforms.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:39 am/sarc off
From Iran through Saudi Arabia, across Africa, into central South America, ending in Cuba or Central America. Yes the "Slingshot Missile" operation can work. Probably better with every slingshot 1100 miles apart than 1000. Bad math by me. Sorry.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:40 amThe GOP: "Facts?? We ain't got no facts! We don't need no facts! I don't have to show you any stinkin' facts!"
Who needs facts when you've got FEAR(!!!!!!!)...right?
Am I the only one who suspects that this may be the equivalent of the "smoking gun...in the form of a mushroom cloud" malarkey that the Bush administration threw at us once before in order to pull us into the War In Iraq?
June 17th, 2008 at 8:41 amshoeless - guess we can expect to hear that excuse next. Dam*, these people, Bolten et al, just don't give up, do they. They are like the annoying stink bugs that just keep coming out of nowhere; invasive and annoying. They need to be flushed down the toilet so that they can't return.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:43 amHey, Cats, it can be like something out of a comic book. Maybe the ocean is the way to go. More direct.
In all seriousness, it's just so damn sad when you have people who have no sense of decency and are willing to scare the populace with lies about threats to the country, then amp up those lies into a cause for war, placing our troops in harm's way.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:44 amBluestocking - you're not the only one. Hopefully it's different this time. Hopefully, Americans have heard enough of this crap to reject it.

'Smoking gun' made with duct tape
Al-Taji, Iraq -- A remotely piloted aircraft that the United States has warned could spread chemical weapons appears to be made of balsa wood and duct tape, with two small propellors attached to what look like the engines of a weed whacker.
Latif said the plane is controlled by the naked eye from the ground. Asked whether its range is above the 93-mile limit imposed by the United Nations, he said it couldn't be controlled from more than five miles.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:13 amYes, and I suppose in the 60s the U.S.S.R. could have said "hey look, the U.S. is a threat to us, because they have a missile that could hit our military installations in Cuba, so we must pre-emptively attack them to protect ourselves".
I guess almost any nation is a threat to U.S. military installations, once we invade and indefinitely occupy their neighboring countries.

*******************************************************
Has the possibility occurred to you that Jarret might have deliberately slurred his voice at that point in order to make it more difficult to understand exactly what he was saying? (Myself, I wouldn't put anything -- and yes, I do mean anything -- past the pseudo-journalistic clowns at FAUX News.) After all, the fact is that most Americans have forgotten (if indeed they ever learned) how to listen -- never mind do so with discrimination. If FAUX News could get away with putting their viewers in a lather by making it sound as if Iran might have the capability to strike the continental United States with a missile, that could only work to the advantage of the Bush administration...you have to admit that.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:03 pmThe neos are just ACHING to start a war with Iran, so they will invent some incident then start bombing. This is what Israel wants, and what Israel wants Israel gets. Plus, then there will be plenty of defense dollars "justified" to feed the military industrial monster.
The big question is, when this happens, what are we going to do about it?
June 17th, 2008 at 1:44 pmBOLOTON: AND, the whirling dervishes are actually centrifical force devices that spin faster and faster until they reach critical mass. Our intelligence says these devilish dervishes have been spotted spinning all over the U.S.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:55 pmSo did any of you actually watch the video before commenting?
He clearly states that they could hit US military installations "STATIONED IN THE REGION." NOT in the United States.
Stupid witch-hunt mistakes like these only make us look stupid and less credible.
June 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pmA PNACcio lying? Noooo, it can't be. /obvious sarcasm
June 17th, 2008 at 9:11 pmIf something does hit a military installation or a commercial plane or whatever in the US, just remember the following and who actually has the ability to acquire weapons and get them into the US: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb5092/is_200308/ai_n18521270
and remember the dancing Israelis on 9/11 who worked for Urban Moving Systems. The owner, Mr. Suter, closed shop and skeedaddled to Israel immediately after 9/11 so as to avoid questioning. Michael Chertoff got the naughty boys released so they could return to Israel, where on one of their talk show interviews they said they were in the U.S. (illegally, by the way) to document the event (foreknowledge). Their interview can be seen on Youtube.http://ww w.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=tRfhUezbKLw&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DtRfhUezbKLw
And why would Urban Moving Systems receive $498,750 in federal assistance in 2001? Something stinks. It looks like a payoff to me.
I'd like to know who the individual was who ultimately approved this assistance and have him questioned. http://www.fedspending.org/faads/faads.php?&recip_id=903577&sortby=u&datype=T&reptype=r&database=faads&detail=0
Israel wants war with Iran, the people of the United States do not.

June 18th, 2008 at 6:13 amIt is such a shame that this, or any other conversation, is filled with curses, slang and personal attacks including words fit only for the gutter.
Such violent hatered indicates a lack of intelligence. 'Tis a
