GOP convention button asks, ‘If Obama is president…will we still call it the White House?’

A booth at this weekend’s Texas Republican convention sold buttons asking, “If Obama Is President…Will We Still Call It The White House?”:

obama-button.JPG

The company that makes the buttons boasts providing “Patriotic and Republican Products.” Another button they sell features a picture of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), with the phrase: “Life’s a b**ch, don’t vote for one.” (HT: AmericaBlog)

Digg It!

Update Matt Stoller comments, "File this under remarkable but not surprising."

Yeah… the racism is gonna be hard to ignore, even for moderate Republicans.

    Good strategy, GOP.

So, um, apparently being racist is being patriotic and republican.

    Sigh.

On the other hand, this could be a good thing. If bigots will label themselves as such, we can tell who they are much more efficiently.

What’s worse – this, or joking about assasination? Apparenlty both are legal and acceptable today.

I agree. I also think that this is going to backlash on them. The true died in the wool bigots will never vote for Obama anyway. But the people who have subliminal racist tendencies (probably instilled by their parents) are going to be very uncomfortable with this and it might just push them towards Obama, especially if he doesn’t over react.

  7. liberal traitor says:

Well that was quick. I just emailed TP about this like 15 minutes ago haha. Or maybe they had it in the “tubes” already and it is coincidence.

Anyway, point being, this would be even more hilarious than it is if it weren’t so…well…racist and tragic.

Another election year for the GOP, another campaign void of substance. Demean the challenger by failing to debate on the issues. Harass the challenger. Incite hatred.

Too bad for them, it isn’t making any real difference. Sure, Alan Colmes has to put up with nastier calls, but the presidency is still Obama’s.

Don’t be surprised when the floor of the GOP convention is filled up with KKK halloweenie costumes the confederate stars & bars, and McPutz will be given the honor of igniting the cross on the podium.

  21. StratRat says:

And there are still folks in this country who will look at the button and laugh about it. To them, it is funny. Just think about the mindset of the right side. Obama was an accomplished student and community rights lawyer, he is a successful author, a successful US Senator, the presumptive Democratic candidate for POTUS. To the uneducated on the right side, this is scary stuff: An educated BLACK MAN…Run away!!!!!In the old days, education and accomplishement were things to be cheered and rewarded. Now the right side is frightened about the very same education and accomplishment.

Why is it that staying uninformed and oblivious to the reality of our country is considered a good thing to the right side?

Ah, good old republicans. They got the market cornered on patriotism, huh?

I think Gonzo said it best after the ‘00 ‘election’:

“We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world — a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you. “Well, sh1t on that dumbness, George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn’t vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today — and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever. “Who does vote for these dishonest sh1theads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid rich kids like George Bush? “They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us — they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. “And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fu(k them.”

For once these GOP bastards aren’t lying. Let them hang themselves by their own words. The more they draw attention to their racism, their disgust for the common man, and their rejection of the principles and philosophies embedded in the US constitution and the Bill of Rights, the more they will be rejected. They will lose a lot of their former power which they have used to maintain their bigoted conept of what America should be. Take the power from the recists and racism will lose its power.

They aren’t getting those votes, in large part, because republicans have allowed an atmosphere comfortable for racists and bigots.

Soberly put, most Republicans are not racists. But if you’re a racist (in the conventional, white racist sense), then with which party are you going to align yourself?

The Democrats, with their drive to secure fairness and protect equal rights for everyone, including minorities, are not going to be too attractive to this demographic.

Republicans, on the other hand, not only built a stronghold in the South on the basis of Nixon’s southern strategy, but also strive first to protect the rights of those who already HAVE — who already have property, who already have wealth, who already have power and access to power. To a racist, these folks are gonna feel like daddy’s home.

My students consistently rate this among their top literary favorites; a sign that times are thankfully changing and that the younger generation has no tolerance for such evil vestiges of the past.

Quand tu as grandi, tu étais blanc,
Quand tu vas au soleil, tu es rouge,
Quand tu as froid, tu es bleu,
Quand tu as peur, tu es vert,
Quand tu es malade, tu es jaune,
Quand tu mourras, tu seras gris.

    Alors, de nous deux,
    Qui est l’homme de couleur ? ”

A poeme for my white brother

    Dear white brother,
When I was born, I was black,
When I gew up, I was black,
When I am in the sun, I am black,

Is this what the Republican Party Stands for?”

  100. Bob says:

The last two prez elections haven’t exactly instilled confidence in the electrate to make an informed, rational decision. This election shouldn’t even be close. republicans hate facts might do well to remember that Senator Obama ran an incredibly clean campaign and that it was HRC’s camp that was flinging lies, innuendo, racism, the kitchen sink etal in their desperate attempts at procuring the nomination. r h f fails to accept that it was Clinton’s Rove style campaigning and cut throat tactics that cost her any chance she may have had with Democrats. Her ability to run a perfect Republican style campaign is exactly what turned off core Democratic voters which was all she ever really had other than older female voters which, when they inform themselves about the actual issues that are important to them, will confidently vote for Obama. A small portion (my guess is about 10-12%) of Clinton voters may defect to McCain’s side. What are you going to do? A percentage of Americans still support Bush despite logic and fact.

I called back and asked why they hung up. They said because I was cursing. I said that that was what Larry Sinclair was supposed to speak on—that and nothing else–and that they chose him to speak on this subject and not me. He has been a Senator for barely a year as he has spent the other two years campaigning. What is wrong with you people. Regardless of whether or not he is black or white, he’s an idiot and a racist one at that! You people that want him are either hispanic or black yourselves. You’re voting for him only because of this, not due to his splendid qualifications and education. You want him because he is your “Bro” You’re not kidding me none. And if you think we are going to become your slaves like what happened yrs ago, you have another thing coming. I’m not bowing down to you or Obama ! Catch this!

  151. imdougandirule says:

I believe this story released by the Republican Party of Texas is a fake and here’s why:

I went to the website where it was said to be sold and could not find the button. I also could not find any notice of discontinuing the button and/or a statement of apology from the company for their blatant racism.

I then did a search for the button and could not find it anywhere, only articles about it and how the Republican Party of Texas was quick to condemn such a “disgracefully insensitive button.” Since when do Republicans care about sensitivity?

I later found out that the vendor only had twelve made total, “as a joke” and only sold four, two to reporters. This leads me to believe that this is a hoax orchestrated with the intent of making a media spectacle.

    And they got it.

  152. bobzaguy says:

Those of you who feel able to withstand the “other side” of this issue, go to:

you could sell hundreds, nay thousands, of these buttons there.

  153. just me_08 says:

So apparently most of you are against racism, but not ageism? That’s a little ironic. Someday you’ll all be old (if you live long enough) and people will say about you what you’re saying about McCain now.

There are a lot of old people who will vote Obama and otherwise vote Democrat. I wonder if the same treatment should be given to those old people. But I guess ageism doesn’t apply to Democrats.

I think it’s racist that a lot of people rarely or never acknowledge Obama’s white half. They call him “black” or “African American” when he’s really bi-racial. He may be darker than any other presidential candidate but he’s not pure genuine black.
