Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) offered “a bit of a capitulation to the oil companies” by announcing that he would end the federal ban on offshore oil drilling. Not only is McCain’s move a break with environmental activist, but it is also “a reversal of the position he took in his 2000 presidential campaign.” The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank writes:
During his last run for the presidency, in 1999, McCain supported the drilling moratorium, and he scolded the “special interests in Washington” that sought offshore drilling leases. Yesterday, he announced that those very same “moratoria should be lifted” and proposed incentives for the states “in the form of tangible financial rewards, if the states decide to lift those moratoriums.”
In 2000, McCain promised to “never lose sight” of fundamental principles on the issue.

McCain is either pandering to the conservatives who do not like him as the Republican candidate, or he really is in the early stages of Alzheimers. I suppose time will tell which it is.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:28 amSure, it’s reasonable for one to change his position on an issue over the course of eight years, even a “straight talker”.
But to change one’s position on all the issues?
That should give pause to an observer, no?
June 17th, 2008 at 10:37 amIn 2000, McCain promised to “never lose sight” of fundamental principles
McNumbNuts is, at least, consistent on this one thing. He will never lose sight of his fundamental and singular principle –> “I’ll do and say whatever it takes to get elected, my friends”.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:37 am“a reversal of the position he took in his 2000 presidential campaign”
- - C’mon guys, dontcha know 9/11/01 changed everything?
June 17th, 2008 at 10:38 amWhat’s puzzling is that McCain is establishing these positions with no acknowledgement whatsoever of his previous stances.
And for THIS one, he could have handled it with a little grace. He could have said that because of the unprecedented high oil prices, he has “re-evaluated” his position on off-shore drilling.
We would probably still have plenty to say about that position, but at least he would appear to have some functioning brain cells of his own. His current strategy is just making him look like a mindless panderer to special interests, while insulting our intelligence.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:44 amWhat hasn’t he flip-flopped on?
June 17th, 2008 at 10:45 amIn 2000, McCain was running to be a leader.
In 2008, McSame is running to be President.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:46 amDoes McCain not realize that his campaign just put out a new “pro environment” ad?
From TPM:

Geez, how many sides of his mouth can McCain talk out of at one time?
PEACE
June 17th, 2008 at 10:46 amThis is very good news for Democrats as Florida is in play and Floridians across-the-board *all* oppose offshore oil drilling.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:49 amEven Mel “former RNC chair” Martinez opposes offshore oil drilling - it is that politically deadly in Florida.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:51 amMcCrash comes up for air, only to change his mind again.
McCrash changes his mind more than he changes his underwear.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:56 amWhat else is Johnny Boy going to sell out on? Maybe offering the Statue of Liberty to the Dubai government or maybe Yellowstone to the Chinese?
Gotta love these Repugs, willing to give away anything for their short-sided positions. Maybe because most are pasty, pudgy white guys, they know they won’t be around to see the carnage they have caused. or, “Cheney the rest of you, including my grandkids, I got mine”‘
June 17th, 2008 at 10:59 amIf anyone had any doubt Obama would carry Michigan do not fret. I watched the Joe rock all year with my Wings and it rocked last night. Billups came out in support and so did some other guy. We got it right in the last three elections and now McFencesitter just delivered Florida. The end.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:00 amThis is all about gas prices, folks. It is killing low income people on a variety of fronts. If prices continue to rise, drilling domestically is going to become more and more attractive.
Then there is the nuclear side of things. The China Syndrome has not materialized. Think of what technology was like in the 70’s as opposed to today. Even some environmentalist leaders from decades past - possibly the founder of Green Peace? - have become pro-nuke. Doesn’t France generate 80% of its power from nuclear? Throw in plug in electric cars being developed and that could lower gas prices right there.
I love solar and geothermal, but somehow they just don’t seem to be in a place where you can replace fossil fuels at present.
It seems to me that there is no source of energy we should not fast track immediately to save our economy from ruin while at the same time having a strategic 20 plan to develop green energy.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:00 am“McCain Flip Flops”
June 17th, 2008 at 11:01 amJust cut and paste that..it’s easier
R2D2, so?
June 17th, 2008 at 11:04 amThanks Roger2, that is an incredibly generous thing to do, to provide us with those major flip-flop points, even including Dubya’s position.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:06 ammy son USED to be a mcCREEPY fan… i’ve helped to keep him informed of the past few years’ changes of the man…
on sunday, we talked about obama’s winning the dem nominee race, and both of us expressed the doubt about him actually winning…
he asked, about mcSAME, “what happened to him? why all the flip-flopping?”… i told him that i thought it meant that the fix is in - that mcBUSH was so lazy and uncaring because he already knows he will be “picked”… he brushed that off…
i still think that though… the fix is in…
unless, maybe, theres is
OVERWHELMING DEMOCRATIC VOTER TURNOUT.
THEY CAN’T STEAL IT IF IT ISN’T CLOSE.

Ah, the good old days for lying politicians.

did you read the quot?.tell me the flip-flop.or not.
If you mean he was against issuing offshore leases in 2000 without the state’s residents supporting it and now wants to go full steam ahead, no matter what the people want?
Yea …..That would be a flip-flop.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:12 amI keep losing place. Is he is currently on the flip or on the flop. This is like watching Olympic ping pong.
And thanks for pointing out a major Bush flop, rx2.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:13 amThe McNuttster straight-talky bus is goin head on into the McCrazy 2.0 bullshit train. Only one can survive…the big one.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:13 amIn 2000, McCain promised to “never lose sight” of fundamental principles on the issue.
There is the crucial point. Changing your mind about an issue on the basis of changes in circumstances while maintaining adherence to fundamental principles that are worthy is fine. If your “fundamental principle” is playing the game well enough to get elected, then changing your mind is flip-flopping. McCain should be asked why he is “changing” so much because there is no “change we can believe in” there.

no, he only supported measures with voters approval in 2000.And he is not “pushing” it now, he is “calling” for it.
WTF!!!!!
are you really as obtuse and drugged up as you sound?
The only freakin’d difference is he was Strongly AGAINST it before, now he is Adamantly FOR it.

June 17th, 2008 at 11:28 amRoger2 has gone beyond even his/her/its boundaries of incoherence. Guess it just further proves the theory that Repugs have a polluted gene pool from too much inbreeding.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:28 amJust in time for his Texas fund raising trip.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:41 amTo put an end to the argument, McCain flip-flops on everything. Although it may not be intentional, it might be because he is so old.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:42 amTo improve access to a life improving resource due to increased financial hardship, John McCain offered:
1. Comprehensive health insurance coverage for all Americans
2. To open up offshore drilling
The answer is #2. Just as it is intended to help corporate America, watch McCain’s health care plans do likewise. But watch out for his bi-partisan counterparts!
