On June 5, Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) took to the House floor and criticized Congress for refusing to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling. To strengthen her point, she claimed that even China and Cuba are drilling off Florida’s coast:
This very day, there is indeed the drilling activity off of our country’s coast. Not by our U.S. companies; that would be illegal. Instead, the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida, with their new energy partner, Cuba. This Congress has failed to act time and time again. Our oil resources along our coastlines and in Alaska remain untapped in the name of environmentalism.
Watch it:
Schmidt’s allegation is false. China is not drilling off the coast of Florida. Even Vice President Cheney, who also made the claim last week, put out a statement on Thursday admitting that he was wrong:
It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.
Conservative columnist George Will, who also made the claim in his June 5 column, today wrote a correction, stating, “[N]o Chinese company has been involved in Cuba’s oil exploration that close to the United States.”
Schmidt and other conservatives are refusing to back down, however. When asked whether she plans to issue a retraction, one of her spokesmen simply replied, “We will have a discussion.” House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Rep. George Radanovich (R-CA), who also made the false claim, have gone further and defended their statements.
Similarly, other conservatives continue to peddle the propaganda. Just yesterday, conservative pundit Mary Matalin made the claim both on CNN and CNN Headline News. A Fox News guest also repeated the lie yesterday on Neil Cavuto’s show.

Rep. Jean Schmidt, get your facts straight. However, your point is completely valid. Congress needs to pave the way for offshore drilling while simultaneously providing incentives for alternative energy. Comprehensive approach, not a partisan approach, is needed to help produce more energy and bring cost down. Congress, stop getting in the way and do your job!
June 17th, 2008 at 11:29 amThis about saying something enough times so it becomes truth, at least to people who only hear what they want to believe.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:32 amIt is almost comical how fcuking stupid these repukes are.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:32 am“We will have a discussion.”
Translation: We need to find another lie to replace this one before we even consider correcting our statement.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:32 amSchmidt’s allegation is false. China is not drilling off the coast of Florida.
- - Schmidt has always been extremely slow on the uptake, as evidenced by her ignorance of Rep. Murtha’s background.
Why isn’t Schmidt outraged that China controls billions of dollars of the US debt?
June 17th, 2008 at 11:34 amI think the Republicans fired all their fact-checkers years ago on the grounds that they weren’t needed. Now they just forge ahead with all their soundbites and talking points whether they’re true or not, figuring that the American public will never know the difference.
Sadly, they’re right about a large number of us.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:37 amRep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) took to the House floor and criticized Congress for refusing to lift the ban on offshore oil drilling.
- - By all means, let’s find a new stash for our addiction.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:38 amGW Bush: “You Have To Keep Repeating Things To Catapult The Propaganda”
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” - Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Propaganda Minister.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:39 amOhio’s got some really bright congresspeople, huh? Good thing they are given the power to choose the presidency.
ugg.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:39 amStop the presses! Jean Schmidt lied. She and John Boehner (R-OH), sure make Ohio look.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:41 amJean Schmidt is a horrible congresswoman, and has the most crazy far out ideas that you can imagine. Cincinnati, where she is from has always leaned to the Repugs. Bless her heart, she does not represent her state well. Jean, please loose in November, okay?

June 17th, 2008 at 11:48 amImproving access to a scarce life saving resource, is that oil or health care? Either way Congress will pass something to business’ advantage. Of course they have to lie to get the people to swallow it:

June 17th, 2008 at 11:48 amJean Schmidt it to Ohio politics what Michelle Bachmann is to MN.
Remember when Ms Schmidt slipped in a bathroom and fell in vomit? Was it her own? Was it Larry Craig’s, or perhaps the guy’s whom Craig solicited?
Jean Schidt & John Boner. Ohio, let’s change your tune in November and actually put some thinking people in office.
Schmidt reminds me of the Wicked Witch of the West in OZ. Scary, loud & full of dirty tricks. But, upon being doused with water, shrieks & screams while melting.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:50 amPlease tell me that there is a viable Democrat running for her seat this November. She is an embarrassment to the human race.

God hates republican’ts
June 17th, 2008 at 11:54 amrogerse,
We all know Cuba is looking into partnering with foreign companies in order to drill for oil.
The topic of this thread is whether or not China is currently drilling off the Cuban shores.
Do try to keep up.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:56 amMean Jean of the pink gloves. Probably the worst example of a woman Congressional Rep since Katerine Harris of FL.
June 17th, 2008 at 11:56 amDidn’t Cheney apologize for the lie..?
Didn’t Republican Senator of Florida..Mel Martinez say it was a lie?
Why is this Congress woman and others like her keep repeating this lie after it was debunked?
She needs to get in touch with Senator Martinez about this,so she can close her books on this fable.
It will be more laughable if she continues to repeat this big lie.

Scary Chinese men, just off the coast.
Black people running for President.
Cubans & Chinese, making money.
I’m so sick & tired of Americans swallowing the Bushit they’re fed daily. Once again, Cheney takes a lie, makes it news and then retracts it. Pure Rovian in nature. Look at all the fools who not only bought into this lie, but regurgitate it, even after it’s been proven false.
Republicans are like mushrooms; kept in the dark & fed shit daily.

Always making excuses, always blaming someone else, always lying and always having temper tantrums when they don’t get their way. They will never grow up and that is why they should never be put in a position of power. They lack the maturity necessary to make informed and intelligent decisions.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:02 pmI thought the lack of off shore drilling in Fla was because the state of Fla had been against it. And my recollection is that Fla has had Republican govs and dominated legislatures for some time now. Do states have rights? There sure is no lack of offshore drilling around Texas, Louisiana, Miss, and Ala. And so now how is Floridas lack of drilling the fault of Dems and when did it become a federal issue?

The Republican Noise machine is alive and still producing slime.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:18 pmSeems like the conservatives should be mad at themselves if they want to keep going off about China. They allowed the sale of EnCana (a Canadian company that does oil work in Colorado) to China. Additionally, EnCona ONLY hires Chinese workers to work inside America. There are unemployed workers in Western Coloardo that need this work but in 2005 (Republicans held both houses; Colorado is majority Republican) they allowed this deal to go through. How come they aren’t making a big deal about this? How come the Dems aren ‘t raising this as a legit issue? Didn’t we just have the Chinese breaking into our defense networks??
June 17th, 2008 at 12:20 pmSo I suppose she’s got a memo from the Niger embassy in Italy telling her about this?
June 17th, 2008 at 12:22 pmAnd let’s not forget that if we would lift the trading sanctions against Cuba, we could be participating in the lease concessions in Cuba waters, an easy shot to our Gulf refineries.
And, if China does participate (like Canada, the UK and many other countries), then who do we blame?
Oh, well, that is too easy, I guess.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:23 pmWasn’t Bachman the one who grabbed onto Bush during the State of the Onion address and wouldn’t let go? June 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pm“it doesn’t matter” which country is doing the drilling as long as Cuba continues to lease plots of land to foreign countries.
Oh, but it does matter. The only reason why Cheney and his minions mentioned China in the first place, is to use a scare tactic: “The Communists are coming!”

Remember that hideous sweater she was wearing when she went after Murtha? I imagine that won her a lot of ‘hearts and minds’ in the Marine Corps as well as the rest of the military.
Looking at her and listening to her, makes me want to find a silver stake and a large hammer, or maybe lots of daylight with no access to a coffin for her.

June 17th, 2008 at 12:52 pmAs onoclea pointed out, and all the trolls seem to ignore, the ones responsible for teh moratorium on drilling off of Florida are Republicans.
More specifically, Bushes.
Nice to see that the trolls are willing to defend Mean Jean, though. She’s quite an asset. Why should it matter whether a talking point is, y’know… “true” or “false”? All that matters is whether it catapults the propaganda or not.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm“…He added that “it doesn’t matter” which country is doing the drilling as long as Cuba continues to lease plots of land to foreign countries…”

June 17th, 2008 at 1:05 pmYou know, it’s not such a bad strategy for these people — embrace a talking point despite its manifest untruth — because it’s not like credibility was ever something they count on anyway.
I’m actually surprised Darth Cheney condescended to issue a lukewarm correction.

June 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pmActually the US government does lease to oil companies for drilling and they are getting off cheap…Where Schmidt gets her info from about drilling off the coast is unclear.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:25 pmGreat link rtwl. Everyone should go read. Political expediency over all else. Even though the goal of keeping drilling off most of Florida was to help elect Jeb it also did help preserve some of our gulf coast. And that’s because most Floridians opposed drilling. Do we really want to drill absolutely everywhere? There are no shortages of rigs in our territory already.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:27 pmThe high oil prices are NOT because we are not drilling in the US. In fact demand for oil Q1-2008 demand was down 1.4% and fuel production was up 1.5%
The demand supply argument is bogus. There are no lines at fuel sations because the high price is driving demand down.
BTW I have had people ask for gas money plenty of times and 99% of the time they didnt want fuel they wanted ethanol,,um liquor or beer, maybe food.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pmA lie travels around the world before the truth has time to put on it’s trousers. Or something like that.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pmEven Cheney admitted he was wrong about China drilling off of Cuba’s coast.

Americans can solve their energy problem by
June 17th, 2008 at 1:40 pmconserving energy ,looking for new alternative sources, and be innovative.
This cheap talk about offshore oil drilling is designed for political reasons.
Our country now is over 300 million people, projected to be 350 milions in another 25 years..
How offshore oil drilling is going to help us when we are importing 3 out of every 4 barrels we use from abroad,if we do not have a conservation plan due to increase in our population.
We simply do not have enough oil under our ground and offshore for this generation and the coming one.
Our dependency on foreign countries reaching now a critical point.
We need a president who is truthful about the subject and willing to listen to all sides on this issue to solve this big problem that is facing our nation,
and not listen to oil barons only.
Wars ,as this administration thinks ,will not solve this oil problem..it will instead complicate our energy dependency on foreign sources; it will create havoc on world energy sources and world trade.
Every candidate to be a president promised to solve this problem since 1973.
But alas….
Nothing concrete so far has been accomplished.
And we entered now the critical stage.
This economy cannot be sustained if gasoline reaches $10.00 a gallon, simply because consumers cannot afford it.
Tell a lie often enough and soon people will believe it.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:45 pmIF the shrub had been doing his job instead of starting a war that will not be won maybe this kind of BS would not be an issue.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:50 pmJust FYI
Jim McTague a columnist in Barrons (DC-Current) repeated this same “China is drilling in the Gulf” line in the June 16 2008 publication–about 3/4 of the way through his column.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:52 pmhttp://online.barrons.com/ article/ SB121339767854273579.html?mod=9_0031_b_this_weeks_magazine_main
When Republicans start doing this, I’m always reminded of Tucker Carlson’s comment about Bush’s former spokesperson, Karen Hughes.
Tucker Carlson: “I’ve obviously been lied to a lot by campaign operatives, but the striking thing about the way [Karen Hughes] lied was she knew I knew she was lying, and she did it anyway. There is no word in English that captures that. It almost crosses over from bravado into mental illness.”
June 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pmRepublicans are only trying to score with sound bites, not solve the problem.
In 2007 and 2008, 2.5 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico were leased. In 2009, 5.8 million additional acres are scheduled for leasing. Meanwhile, the drilling rigs are being sent overseas because they can make more money there.
The oil companies sat on Point Thomson in Alaska for 31 years.
We can lease even more land, but how do you force the oil companies to actually drill? The cost of drilling and increased supply that drilling may find both contribute to REDUCED profits.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pmI think its because pukes are afraid. Just because someone like China, wants to drill off of Florida, its close enough to get all worked up about.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pmWingnuttism is basically a system of lies jumbled up into one worldview of propaganda…too bad those lies work on the most gullible and ill-informed of us…

June 17th, 2008 at 2:37 pmPart of the disease called “conservatism” is the complete inability to ever admit error. Which is sad, because, one can’t learn or grow until one acknowledges one’s flaws and limitations. These morons are doomed to a partial existence, cut off from much that makes life worth living.
It’s sad enough for them and those who’s lives they touch, but, it’s profoundly disturbing when they start legislating their narrow world view.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:02 pmNow we know the Republican strategy.
Scare soccer moms with those communist horrid Islamo-fascist gay brown/yellow/red/non-white people that are out to end their Republican criminal way of life.
How could I have guessed?
June 17th, 2008 at 3:09 pmOh,yeah, same strategy every election year.
Where are all the brave Repukes whose districts border on one of our seacoasts?
Radonovich, R-CA, is the only representative mentioned in this article from a coastal state, however, his district is located some distance inland from the California coast (east of I-5 and west of the Nevada border).
Why not suggest that we begin first by digging for coal, starting with the front yards of the wealthiest Republican campaign contributors in each district (i.e., Schmidt, Radonovich, Boehner, Blunt, Bachmann, and Walberg)?
June 17th, 2008 at 5:15 pmWhat amazes me is that this would be the first time anyone had asked her or her husband for money at a gas station. Long before gas had reached $2 anyone living in an urban setting would have been subjected to the old “…ran out of gas moving my family to [insert city here]” routine.
I’d say she’s out of touch with these same concerned constituents but her district is kind of stick-ish.
