A booth at last weekend’s Texas GOP convention sold offensive buttons asking, “If Obama Is President…Will We Still Call It The White House?” After strong public criticism, the state Republican party said that it plans to “donate the $1,500 rent it collected from the vendor, Republicanmarket.com, to Midwestern flood victims.” Additionally, in the future, the party will begin vetting the merchandise being sold. “This vendor need not apply to another Texas GOP state convention,” GOP spokesman Hans Klingler. “We will neither tolerate nor profit from bigotry.”
Klingler then added, off the record, “Until the next time we find it tolerable and profitable.”
June 18th, 2008 at 4:02 pmTOO LATE!
June 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pmIt will, however, still sell those adorable little Obama monkeys on its website! Noose available for an additional charge…
June 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pmSomeone should ask Republicanmarket.com why the name of the White House wasn’t changed over the last 7 years to the White Primate House , as it should have been………….
June 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pmIs Mr. Klingler suggesting that this was the only vendor selling racist merchandise at GOP conventions in Texas? How about going one step further, Mr. Klingler, and urge the national GOP to block this vendor from any and all GOP events across the country? Or do you only care about racism practiced in Texas?
June 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm“We will neither tolerate nor profit from bigotry” when we get exposed on the net for promoting bigotry & it goes viral.

Well said, Mr. Klingler. Props to you and the Texas GOP for their stance.
Now spread the word to the GOP in the other 49 states.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:09 pm“This vendor need not apply to another Texas GOP state convention,” GOP spokesman Hans Klingler.
Klingler later added : There are 49 other states we’re going to have him apply ………..

Where are the trolls last seem wandering around various progressive websites earlier this week questioning whether this button was actually sold at the convention and insisting that the Dallas Morning News must have photoshopped the picture?

June 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pmPlaying the race card along with the fear card is the last desperate hope for the gop. If they can capitalize on the racism in the democratic party then they have a chance to continue thier rape of America.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pmThe Republican Party will always have problems like this for one simple reason: The platform of the Republican Party appeals to racists and bigots more than the platform of the Democratic Party does. The Democrats have policies that are more inclusive of people from all backgrounds, while the Republicans have policies that tend to exclude people, especially if they are foreign or non-white. Therefore, racists and bigots will always feel more comfortable around the Republican Party. And since the Republicans can count on the votes of racists and bigots, they do not see any advantage to trying to put a stop to this. (Or in changing their policies and platforms.)

Really dumb question: are you telling me that the State GOP didn’t have someone walk around the vendors and eyeball their displays to catch anything untoward ?
How quickly would they have caught it if it was a framed picture of Bush in a compromising position ?
June 18th, 2008 at 5:39 pmMaple, where’s my BushasChympTakinItInTheAssFromGannon button
June 18th, 2008 at 5:43 pmThat is not a dumb question. The answer is they are so used to pulling the wool over the eyes of their dumbass base, they think we are all dumb.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:48 pmTOO LATE! These losers think they can use racism to raise money then claim that they don’t tolerate it, but we know better. If it weren’t for racists, the Republican party would be non existent. They are the party of hate, bigotry, and racism and they are proud of it. Why do you think the klan endorsed Ronald Reagan when the first ran for President. To which Reagan replied: “I can’t tell anyone who to vote for”, while never rejecting their endorsement.
Why are party that claims to be for patriotic and so caring about family values would want a bunch of people like Pat Buchanan, Brit Hume, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, David Duke, and all of the other closeted klan members is beyond me. They wave an American flag in one hand, confederate flag in the other while wearing invisible white sheets and hoods. The sad part about the people I listed above is that they are too coward to admit they are racist. I’ve got to give the klansmen who wear their sheets publicly credit for showing their feelings openly.
The cowards I listed are closeted bigots who use their language skills and education to hide their racist views. The fact that they represent a great number of racist idiots who do not appreciate the diverstiy of America is sad.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:13 pmAs a republican I have no problem saying that the button was most likely an attempt at racial humor. However, I do have an answer for the question asked on the button. If Obama wins it won’t be called “The White House” any more. It will be called the Kremlin. I calls ‘em as I sees ‘em.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pmAs you are a Republican, I’m not surprised that you readily defend this button’s message. Nor am I surprised at your wildly misguided hyperbolic attempt at political humor.
The way you sees ‘em is more than a little bit out of whack. Perhaps a visit to the optometrist is in order.
June 18th, 2008 at 6:46 pmHi CodeZombie:
June 18th, 2008 at 6:56 pmSo since you have called them, might you expound upon how you sees em? Is it a certain look in their eye or more a skip in their step. Maybe you sense their aura? Really how do you do it?
Is Tracy a boy or a girls’s name?
June 18th, 2008 at 8:28 pmIt’s unisex, dbadass.
What are the chances that this latest Tracy model includes any technological advances that might let it recognize sound logic or demonstrable fact? The earlier models always had a strong protection circuit against those pollutants.
June 18th, 2008 at 8:50 pmDoes no one here actually read what a republican says? I did not say that I defend the button’s message. I said that it was most likely an attempt at racial humor – something I do not appreciate. When I look at Obama and what he stands for I do not see him as a black man – I see him as a communist. Hence my opinion that the White House will become the new Kremlin. He thinks that more government intrusion into our lives is the way to go. By the way, I’m not overly enthused with McCain either. This year, regardless of which candidate wins, I think we’re all screwed. As a friend of mine put it, neither candidate is good enough to clean my toilet.

______
Wow – you’re a moron.
June 18th, 2008 at 10:36 pmY’know, stupidity is just as dangerous as racism. Seeing Obama as a communist is even less defensible than seeing him as a black man. Unless, of course, you don’t really know what “communist” means.
And, by the way, when you said it was most likely an attempt at racial humor , you did not include the part about your not appreciating it. And since you left an almost identical comment at the end of yesterday’s thread about this story, it sounded an awful lot like you were excusing this as “no big deal”.
So to answer your question, yes, we do read what a republican says. Once in a while, one of them has something of value to offer.
This is not one of those times.

June 19th, 2008 at 4:05 amSorry I said “communist”. Does “socialist” sound any better? Obama wants to increase taxes on the wealthy because it isn’t fair that they have more money than other people. He wants to increase the taxes on all of the evil corporations, especially the oil companies, because they make too much money. He doesn’t want to do these things so much to increase revenue for the government but because he feels its the “fair thing to do”. Never mind that raising taxes on corporations could cause massive layoffs. Never mind that threatening to impose windfall profit taxes will probably cause the oil companies to produce less oil (unfortunately, both candidates are supporting this idea). Sorry, but since when is it a crime for one person to have more money than another person? I’m not a rich person by any stretch of the imagination but I work hard and I would like to think that when or if I ever do manage to become rich, to break into the “upper class”, that I won’t be taxed to the point where I end up asking myself “why did I even bother trying?”.
Like I said before, I’m pretty much disgusted with both candidates.
I’m also pretty much disgusted with this whole site. “Think Progress”? More like “Think Political Correctness”. I used to think that PC meant “don’t say anything that might offend someone” which I thought was pretty wimpy. Now, I realize that PC means “unless your viewpoints represent the views of the radical left wing liberal environmentalist you are to be punished and squashed like the bug you are – you do not have any rights”. PC speech, like I have seen on this site, is the most hateful form of speech that I have ever seen. If you say you don’t believe in global warming you’re told that you’re the same as a nazi who doesn’t believe in the holocaust. If you say that you’re a republican you’re denigrated and called a racist and a host of other derogatory terms. People don’t come here to debate issues – they come here to bash Bush, republicans, anyone who is slightly religious, the state of Florida, and anyone else who shows any signs whatsoever of loving this great country of ours. I find it odd that no one here ever criticizes what a democrat or liberal says or does. How about the fact that the great nobel prize winner and friend of the planet Al Gore has a house that uses more electricity in one month than most people use in a year? Have I seen any articles about that here? No. How about the fact that Obama recently said that Asians are too short to play basketball? Does he get attacked for it? No, as usual he receives a free pass.
Well, folks, as far as I’m concerned the whole lot of you can just go to hell!!!
