Bolton Fearmongers: ‘Best Outcome’ Of Obama Presidency Is ‘More Embassy Bombings, WTC Attacks’

Yesterday, Fox News’s John Gibson hosted former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton on his radio show. They discussed Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) foreign policy. Bolton charged that “the best outcome” of an Obama presidency would be “a replay of the Clinton administration,” meaning “more embassy bombings” and “more World Trade Center attacks”:

GIBSON: The Obama team is going back to some of the old complaints about the war and the war on terror…that the left has been articulating for a long time now, and not really coming up with anything new.

BOLTON: Yeah I think honestly that’s an optimistic view of it, that it will simply be a replay of the Clinton administration. It will simply have more embassy bombings, more bombings of our warships like the Cole, more World Trade Center attacks. That would be the best outcome from that perspective.

Listen to it:

Of course, Bolton does not mention that the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon occurred during the Bush administration, while Bolton was serving in the Department of State.

Bolton also reminded Gibson that the entire world — “from responsible democratic governments to the terrorists themselves” — is following our election closely, adding, “Everything that Obama is saying today is registering very intensely among those who wish us no good.”

Earlier this election season, Bolton declared that “the mullahs in Tehran” want a Democrat to win the presidency in 2008. What’s more, Bolton’s comments hardly exist in isolation — nor are they even the most egregious examples of right-wing fearmongering. Here are a few more examples:

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ): All I can tell you Jennifer [Rubin] is that I think it’s very clear who Hamas wants to be the next president of the United States. … If Senator Obama is favored by Hamas I think people can make judgments accordingly.”

Rep. Steve King (R-IA): “The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida … would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror” if Obama won the presidency.

Max Boot: “[T]he implication is that Iran’s top terrorist is hoping that Americans will elect Barack Obama this fall.”

Bolton’s scare tactics represent a tried-and-true election strategy for the right wing.

Will those be “better” or “worse” than the 9/11 tragedy that happened on their “watch”?

    – - Maybe Obama can find you an embassy to run somewhere, John.

No presidency (not even Reagan’s) has been better for the mullahs in Iran than that of George W. Bush.

I…am…so…scared!!! I cannot believe that anyone wouldn’t take this seriously!!! Oh…my…GOD!!! If Obama is elected, the sky will fall. Lessee…the Repugs tried this is 2004 and it was a whopping success, so why not try it again, just to dust off the strategy!!!

Sure, that would be the best outcome from the Republican perspective.

For the American perspective, not so much.

But we can’t have Americans getting killed by the thousands like happened all through the Clint… wait a minute — isn’t he describing the Bush administration??

We Americans are to SMART to be FOOLED again by fear mongering — aren’t we?

  10. Xisithrus says:

Gee, isnt that what happened under the current administration?

  11. Bob says:

Didn’t they say the same things two years ago? If they were right, wouldn’t we have already seen such things? Aren’t the only people who believe this bullshit already voting for McCain?

  12. Xisithrus says:

So the war on terror, isnt working? Is that what Bolton is saying? Why the gall of this man to question our commander in chiefs tactics!!!

  13. GeeDubs says:

Oh…as you can see…the embassy bombings and the Cole bombing did happen under the Clinton Administration. It was only the REALLY big Kahuna that happened under Bush, but we don’t want to remind ‘the folks’ about those pesky details.

Booga-Booga-Booga! The Scary Guys are Coming to Get You! I’ve heard of one trick ponies, but this is Absurd! At least this time they’re coming straight out and saying it! And somebody should tell the Walrus that the World Trade Center doesn’t exist any more. The war on Terror is a war against a Concept, not a physical nation-state. It calls for non-traditional methods of fighting. It doesn’t call for invasions on nations, nor for converting the USA into a police state. Here’s hoping that We, the People, realise that and ignore this….individual.
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  15. Buckie Boy says:

And these guys think Americans are uninformed idiots….oh forgot, never mind.

  16. mary says:

So will Bolton be disappointed if there are no embassy bombings on Obama’s watch? Remember how those of us who didn’t agree with the Iraq invasion have been accused of hoping things didn’t go well there so that we would be vindicated?

Aside from the fact that apparently Bolton isn’t aware that the WTC doesn’t exist anymore (putz), if he thinks that embassy and warship attacks are the “best outcome” of an Obama administration, what does he think is the WORST that can happen?!

But, hang on, why do I care what that the evil man thinks?

  17. GeeDubs says:

Yeah, Reid and his underwhelming counterpart Pelosi just signed on to the telecom capitulation. No wonder the Democrats aren’t having better poll numbers. They just keep doing what Bush wants. Does Bush have some consigliere out there with a gun at Reid’s mother’s head?

  18. misshusseinmolly says:

Whereas if McCain wins, we get $10/gallon gas, another war started, a broken military, a broken economy, a gap between the haves and have-nots in this country so wide we look like a banana republic, China owning most of what we have, and the entire world banding together to take us out because they look at us like a rabid dog that must be destroyed.

But if Obama wins, I won’t be safe? Something tells me I’m not going to be any more safe with McCain and his puppeteers at the helm.

  19. sacopenapa says:

Bolton should be arrest for baseless comments like that!

Ya’ just knew they couldn’t leave terrorism off the list.

Seriously though. How is what Bolton do legally different than yelling FIRE! in the proverbial theater? And the neocons b!tch about “leftists” ruining morale? Puh-leeease!

  22. RantingTommy says:

Republicans manipulate politics by using fear.

That, by definition, makes them terrorists.

BOLTON: It will simply have more embassy bombings, more bombings of our warships like the Cole, more World Trade Center attacks.

Earth to Bolton, Earth to Bolton: That’s impossible. There is no World Trade Center to attack. That’s because it was completely leveled on 9/11/2001, during Bush’s tenure.

The address and coordinates of Bush’s Paraguay estate, Cheney’s new mansion in Dubai, Condi’s dorm room # at Stanford and the locations and dates of next years PNAC, AIPAC and republicon think tank conventions. Maybe we can look the other way if the terrorists want to perform a few extraordinary renditions on the likes of you, Gonzo, Rumsfeld and the like.

  29. GeeDubs says:

Yes, the policies of the past eight years have done SO much to enhance our security! Why look! We haven’t had an attack in seven years! It’s all because of good people like Bush and Bolton keepin’ the Turrerists at bay!

Haven’t you heard of Newt Grinchrich saying they should’ve allowed attacks here so we could see how safe we are? Unlike the false accusations, those kind actually hope for more innocent bloodshed. Yes, they will be extremely disappointed when no such thing happens under D leadership. They looked forward to a 9/11 and continue to look back on it fondly because it’s the best thing to happen to bush and r control. Sick bastards.

  31. larkohio says:

John Bolton is a fear monger. Having him be the ambassador to the UN was an embarrassment. I cannot stand him.

  32. GeeDubs says:

Look, you’ve simply GOT to have a boogeyman. If it isn’t the Socialists it’s the Communists. If it isn’t the Turrerists, it’s the Gays. If it isn’t Obama’s Black Mama, it’s Obama’s former pastor. If it isn’t flag lapel pins, it’s Not Being Proud Enough of America. Have you heard over the course of the past year anything WORTHWHILE the Republicans have said on any issue? Anything POSITIVE they have said about what they would do to make things better?

  33. gummitch says:

It should probably be noted that Bolton made these comments on FoxPropaganda, not on a legitimate news program, and the only people who heard him were the wingnuts who think Gibson is worth watching. What we need to worry about is when the FearFactor oozes into the mainstream media.

  34. gitrdone says:

Fear mongering is the only things going on for these guys, I mean…they obviously can’t rely on their terrible record to get votes, so they have to scare the people into voting for them…and unfortunately, it works very well.

The only thing to fear, is fear itself. Don’t let these crooks into our minds, we must think for ourselves people.

  35. mary says:

Bob – I had heard about Gingrich saying that actually (but not on the MSM, that’s for sure) and it certainly made me wonder!

I can picture all of the evil neocons sitting in a dark room discussing whether it would be better to prevent attacks so that they could say, “See how much safer you are with us around?” or if it would be better to “allow” an attack once in awhile to keep people terrified.

    Newt’s exact words:
‘”And it’s almost like they should every once in a while have allowed an attack to get through just to remind us.”

Gingrich then recommended splitting the FBI into a domestic crime unit, which would respect civil liberties, and a “small but very aggressive anti-terrorism agency” with “extraordinary ability to eavesdrop.”‘

  36. upside99 says:

What we are smelling here is the Repug’s flop sweat. They are so afraid of losing their control and having all the walls come tumbling down that will uncover their misdeeds.

They are just practicing the classic example of projection; their fear is pushed onto the constituency in hopes they will be given ‘one more chance’.

    Sick psychopathic bastads.

  37. ADDdaddy says:

these people are classical fascists. so GD frustrating.

  38. GeeDubs says:

Well…let’s not let them be frustrating. Let’s find them entertaining! I mean, I haven’t heard such hilarity since Lynne Cheney went apeshit over lesbianism in her family that she accused poor Kerry of being, “A very bad man.” Er, note to Lynne – you’ve got the lesbian daughter. Er, note to Bolton – you’ve got a funny mustache!

  39. Leftside Annie says:

Bolton is a rabid dog that needs to be put down.

  40. Above the Clouds says:

Wasn’t Bolton the one so wacked out the Republicans wouldn’t even confirm him for the UN position? It’s a good thing he is getting so much face time on these talking head shows so everyone can see just how pathologically insane he is.

  41. Bob says:

Newt is a hypocrit and cannot be trusted. What he’s recommending is dividing the FBI into pro-Constitution and Anti-Constitution. Compartmentalizing violation of the 4th Amendment doesn’t make it right. Newt the neocon Nazi should go play in traffic.

  42. GeeDubs says:

Zed – I can’t tell whether you are thinking we should give The Turrerists habeas corpus, or whether you think McCain is a boob for the 100-year remark. It was almost like holding two diametrically opposing viewpoints at once!

My only problem with this website (which was first pointed out to me by a professor of political science as a great resource) is that he persists in labeling Oregon as “weak Democratic”. Weak? Bah. The Republican Party in Oregon is not even on the ropes anymore; they’ve been knocked entirely out of the ring and are wandering around looking for their teeth.

  46. Witch1 says:

I know Bolton is a putz, also know most of the recih winger’s are fear and smear and full of BS but let me present some long thought out thing’s that many here may or may not of thought about…

Palosi, Reid and many other suposid Dem’s are screwing us just as bad, if not worse than the reich have done by slamming the door on impeachment, not holding to their oath of office to protect the constitution and lieing and caving on every item since the get go….Palosi knew about the wiretapping long before 9/11 by her own admission..Now they are helping give a free pass..

Many item’s don’t even need to go up for a vote, the time limit’s aren’t up, but good old Reid and Palosi have helped the reich like good little soldier’s and I for one am sick to death of all these traiter’s to my country and her people no matter what side of the isle they claime to be on…I think it’s all just one big happy party and we are getting screwed with out even a kiss.

About Obama, he seem’s like a good man but I have many questions that only get generalized answere’s like the war and Israel for instance.

One very big thought has crossed my mind…How many in our country will not vote for him because he is black, just like how many would not vote for Hillery because she was a woman…Last but not least, will the young voter’s really get out there and vote or will they do as they have in the past and just fade away..

I personaly do not feel like gloating at this point, the race and electronic count’s are not in…Don’t forget we need to boot out the bad Dem’s along with the reich winger’s or nothing change’s.. Blessings

  49. Leftside Annie says:

President Leftside Annie, here, Zeddie. Pay attention, please!

Zed Lefflin, under the authority granted to me by the USA Patriot Act, I hereby designate you as a terrorist suspect and a potential enemy combatant. Further, I order you detained indefinitely, also under authority of the USA Patriot Act and various signing statements. (Forget your attorney and the ACLU, bud, they can’t help you, because they won’t know where you are! Heheheh!)

Please report to Gitmo immediately, do not pass GO, do not collect 200 dollars.

While you are detained, in order to preserve our national security (I mean, who knows? You may have a suitcase nuke hidden somewhere, after all!), I have issued orders that you be “harshly” interrogated, which really means that you’ll be tortured, but we don’t call it that – that’s too icky.

Anyway, please expect to be waterboarded and placed in stress positions for hours at a time. I have a whole stack of Barry Manilow CD’s queued up and ready to go and some dirty undies I borrowed from the womens’ rugby team at the local Gay and Lesbian Center. Also, Fido hasn’t been fed in a while, so he’s very hungry. (I’d keep my legs crossed tightly if I were you, pal. Just sayin’.)

Oh, and if you don’t report to Gitmo immediately, I have the authority to smash your door down – without one of those pesky warrants.

I hope you enjoy your stay at Gitmo, and I’m sure your family will be fine without you. Have a nice day, and welcome to Amurka!!

By order of President Leftside Annie

Yep, it looks like Florida has swung from barely red to barely blue. I guess Floridians have some thoughts about the idea of drilling off the shores of their state. Wonder if they will swing back as a result of Bolton’s fearmongering?

  53. paleolib says:

Considering the Republicans’ poor record of predicting the present over the past seven years (believing Russia and/or China posed the greatet threat to the U.S. as late as the morning of 9/11; claiming Iraq was actively developing WMD; contending we would be treated as liberators and the whole thing would be over in less than six months; trying to justify attacking Iran with more discredited nuke stories) they aren’t helping their chances in the election by sending out malevolent trolls like Bolton and Gingrich to project an apocalyptic future if Obama wins. Even the sheeple seem to have started shutting this nonsense out around the time the quagmire in Iraq and the pitiful Katrina response stripped the last veneer of competence from the Bushbots. The only way I see McFlipFlop winning is if the Rs manage to run with a persistent but almost subliminal theme of inexperience based on Obama’s relatively brief public life to try to put enough doubt in the minds of older white voters while using surrogates with no direct ties to the candidate to spread the “scary black man” meme so the Fox watchers bother to show up at the polls. Sending out the Boltontroll who is openly in the McCain camp to spew nonsense just looks desperate.

If it goes off, the Right will come for libruls and progs with dogs and nooses, for protesting torture and such which could have ‘protected’ Murrka.

here it is… i’ve been outside working in the beautiful high 70s, low humidity weather these past days… [tuesday] i heard this exchange – or thought i heard it and wasn’t sure until i could check the transcript today… taking a break, i found it -
from Race to the White House with david gregory, simulcast on RACHEL MADDOW’s show on AirAmericaRadio:

SEN. BARACK OBAMA (D-IL), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Let‘s take the example of Guantanamo. What we know is that in previous terrorist attacks for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center—we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

[stephen] HAYES: Well, they are not all currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated. There was a factual error there. The McCain campaign is jumping all over this, saying that that‘s a gaffe, and also pointing to the fact that in June of 1998, 10 years ago, it was the anniversary of Osama bin Laden‘s indictment and he is still on the loose.

GREGORY: All right. We‘re going to pick up on this as we get into “Three Questions,” the big picture question and debate over the war on terror.

well, i don’t recall that they ever got back to it…

but, is that true??? they are NOT incarcerated???

this may have been covered, but my skimming the threads did not pick it up, and i haven’t been reading the comments…

    but, REALLY???

On the subject of dirty bombs, one thing I’d like to know. 15 out of the 19 real terrorists of September 11 were Saudi nationals. We are giving our Pals, the Saudis, a nice, new nuclear (Not Nukluar!!!) reactor. Saudi Arabia has an average of 300 cloudless days, yet we’re giving them an Nuclear Reactor. Why, oh why, is this happening? Better yet, why isn’t the “Liberal Press” screaming their heads off? If a couple of fuel rods from this little “Gift” happen to get lost, guess what you have a Huge potential for. Saudia Arabia is the homeland of Osama Bin Laden, the birthplace of Al Queda, the land tha produced the majority of the 9/11 hijackers, and we’re giving them a nuclear reactor??? I don’t believe in giving kids matches, much less Saudis radioactive material!!! This looks suspiciously like a little ‘gift’ to the next administration, but then I’m an amazing cynic.
