Glad I stumbled upon this site today...been enjoying these comments. I am currently living in Palo, IA: right outside Cedar Rapids. Our house was flooded, and we are currently in the process of reconstruction. And yes, FEMA was here the day after the flooding occured in Cedar Rapids, and it hit downtown Cedar Rapids the worst...where there are no farms :) So, in our experience, FEMA has been really good to work with. They set up stations with FEMA reps, and the Red Cross has been very helpful. My husband and I both work full time and have never needed aid of any sort. We have a nice household income, but we also had no flood insurance. So, we will be getting quite a bit of money for fixing our home. The state is also giving out 'one time use' food stamps (ebt card). This is aid we never would qualify for under normal circumstances. From all I know of Katrina, our experience is WAY better. And I think that has a lot to do with the way things were handled then. I think there is a lot to make up for, in a sense. I know that treating Iowans well isn't going to make up for the way those in NO were treated, but for the majority of Americans just catching glimpses of each situation on the news, I would think after seeing the mess back then, and seeing how quickly the government is acting on this Disaster, they might think FEMA has gotten its act together. I don't know...I guess my point is they felt like they had to do things right this time to make themselves (and the administration) look better...?

my opinion of Retched limpall is that he is nothing more than a modern-day 'snake oil salesman'who is paid substantially to shill for his handlers. He blows a lot of smoke, BS and nonsense to sway the mass of gullible listeners. He uses his foghorn voice as psychological authority to bray nonsensical innuendos, unsubstantiated facts and figures he makes up and shares as supposed knowledge to guide his loyal followers. When faced by facts or cornered by someone that 'knows what they are talking about', he quickly changes the subject in some rambling incoherent response and goes off on another far-reaching tangent. He has gotten so much worse over the years, whether it is the old age, demetia creeping in or he is so delusional that he is beginning to believe his own bs. It is torture to listen to his rhetoric anymore and I completely refuse to watch a U tube of his show anymore-- even for grins & giggles. He is like a perverted circus side-show exhibit.

gunclinger, the main 'stark difference between the reaction from the NOLA community and the communities of fire affecting San Diego and flooded Iowa' has little to do with 'entitlement attitude' and 'culture' as much as it has to do with people overlooking the glaring obvious differences in scope of the devastation of the disasters which contributed to the citizens reactions.

Anyone with a 'lick' of sense should be able to comprehend the difference between a slow developing flood along river towns AND a state hit by a major hurricane and a resulting flood from levees collapsing in 50 places throughout the major city and surrounding communities. For it to be comparable would be if a big slow moving tornado was going through the surrounding areas at the same time and if the river flooded over 80% of Iowa City and stayed flooded for a few weeks and if it was up to 4 days in 90 degree temps before a federal response answered the call. Can you compare losing 3 or 4,000 homes to the destruction of 225,000 homes & w/l00's of thousands of homes damaged? 81,000 businesses affected--at least 18,000 destoyed.

The govt estimates that Katrina & federal levee failures caused 90,000 square MILES of damages in La, Ms, Al & Fl. Less than 1 month later, Hurricane Rita hit the sw coastal communities of LA and caused 60,000 square MILES of additional damages in LA/Tx. To my understanding, the floods in the Midwest or the fires of California have not reached this magnitude yet.

Another stark difference is that NO other state has had to endure a historical set of disasters and endure the continuous lies, misrepresentations, under-reporting of facts, slander, character assassinations and ridicule as Louisiana has had to face since DAY 1 and that has continued for nearly 3 years.

There continues to be a stark difference between the reaction from the new Orleans community and the communities of fire affected San diego and flooded Iowa. This has nothing to do with race and everything to do with an entitlement attitude engrained in new orleans culture

I have to say, this time he's absolutely right. I was thinking the same thing. That you've all applied your own layer of race to the comparison just shows you're unable to look at two similar circumstances without checking your race scorecard.

Prytania says: Bill Clinton signed the Welfare Reform act so he could get his second term. He was pressured by congress for two years. So you may be right.

You take one example of jobs improving when a Dem follows a Repub and then you put forth your own personal spin for the reason. Clinton very easily got his second term.

Clinton at first had a Dem congress and his budget passed without a single Repub vote. It cut the deficit in half--from $250 billion per year to $125 billion. $125 billion equaled the interest on the debt incurred the previous 12 years. You cannot explain why GHWB and GWB were worse. GWB had a Repub House, Senate, and Supreme Court and his job creation is one-third of Clinton's.

You cannot explain why FDR was better than Hoover, Eisenhower was worse than Truman, JFK was better than Eisenhower, Nixon was worse than LBJ, Carter was better than Ford, Reagan was worse than Carter, Clinton was better than GHWB, GWB was worse than Clinton, and Obama will be better than GWB. I cannot go back before Harding, because job growth rate was not kept then.

nitpicker Says:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There might be a reason that no one in Iowa and Illinois–the people who, by the way, elected Barack Obama–is asking “where’s Fema, where’s Bush?” Because when it came to the midwest, FEMA was right on time. From a FEMA press release:
-------------

EXACTLY!!

Recall: FEMA and the DHS didn't even know there were people living in the Superdome for TWO DAYS.

Recall: There were armed personel blocking the Red Cross from bringing aid to people in NOLA.

Recall: Trucks of water and ice never even reached the city.

And so on. Of course they are not rioting in the mid-west; they are getting what they need whereas the people in New Orleans were left stranded on their roof tops with nothing.

you expect those children [who grow up in conditions of poverty] to magically overcome the lessons learned in dysfunctional social situations once they reach eighteen, and to embrace the values you were brought up with.

It doesn’t work like that.

I just thought this was worth repeating.

Prytania says: 25% of the entire countries energy comes through or is refined in Louisiana.

And the petroleum industry is largely responsible for hurricane Katrina's landfall on New Orleans [due to the loss of wetlands - the protective barrier to hurricanes.] See National Geographic Article -- Louisiana's Wetlands

...But two years ago former petroleum geologist Bob Morton, now with the U.S. Geological Survey, noticed that the highest rates of wetland loss occurred during or just after the period of peak oil and gas production in the 1970s and early 1980s. After much study, Morton concluded that the removal of millions of barrels of oil, trillions of cubic feet of natural gas, and tens of millions of barrels of saline formation water lying with the petroleum deposits caused a drop in subsurface pressure—a theory known as regional depressurization. That led nearby underground faults to slip and the land above them to slump.

"When you stick a straw in a soda and suck on it, everything goes down," Morton explains. "That's very simplified, but you get the idea." The phenomenon isn't new: It was first documented in Texas in 1926 and has been reported in other oil-producing areas such as the North Sea and Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. Morton won't speculate on what percentage of wetland loss can be pinned on the oil industry. "What I can tell you is that much of the loss between Bayou Lafourche and Bayou Terrebonne was caused by induced subsidence from oil and gas withdrawal. The wetlands are still there, they're just underwater." The area Morton refers to, part of the Barataria-Terrebonne estuary, has one of the highest rates of wetland loss in the state.

Alternative Energy is a must while more DRILLING [i.e. ANWR or Florida's Coast] is short-sighted and detrimental to the health of our country.

Prytania Says:
It’s very frustrating. It pisses me off to the point I ramble sometimes. It’s hard to explain the things this city has dealt with pre an post Katrina. Sorting through the lies an misconceptions about New Orleans and explaining why we are where we are today is a daunting task. And if I hear one more person say, ” why are we even rebuilding that area?” one more time, i’m gonna drink more. 25% of the entire countries energy comes through or is refined in Louisiana.

Oh poor you, you whiny little pr*ck. I bet your not nearly as frustrated about NO as we are about the crooks in the administration and the lies they spew to make 1 percenters like you still defend them. No why don't you just STFU and go away.

Sure Prytania, and McCain gets $57,000 annually in disability when he certainly seems able to work. You people who have no problem giving big tax breaks to the wealthiest 1% of our society and then think we should let all poor children go hungry because they met somebody who gamed the welfare system are unbelievably stupid. I bet you never met any middle class white people who cheated on their taxes did you? People like you are beneath contempt.
