Tennessee Dem: Fox News made me believe Obama was ‘terrorist-connected.’

Last week, Fred Hobbs, a state Democratic Party Executive Committee member in Tennessee, told Nashville’s City Paper that for all he knew, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “may be terrorist connected.” In a letter of apology to the Executive Committee, Hobbs now says he had that “incorrect” impression because he watched Fox News:

I was not as well prepared as I should have been when speaking with reporters, and I should have taken more time to research Senator Obama’s positions. My comments did reflect questions I had after what I had seen reported on Fox News, but I should have taken some time to check the accuracy of what I saw on television before speaking publicly. My statement that Senator Obama “may be terrorist-connected” was incorrect, and I apologize for making it.

Two weeks ago today, Fox News anchor E.D. Hill suggested that a greeting between Obama and his wife Michelle may have been a “terrorist fist jab.” (HT: Brave New Films)

So, by this logic (politicians logic is suspect to start with), watching Faux Noise is the only source of "facts" ??

IF politicians have stooped this low on their "fact finding" activity, we're ALL in trouble...

How can anyone get elected that is this stupid??

  2. tarazan Says:

    Scott McClellan is testifying now...
A reminder of John Dean's Watergate testimony...

I hope McClellan will shed a light on the role of Fox..and the Right Wing propaganda machine..since he was the W.H. Spokesman and very much connected.

  3. Freedom Rebel Says:

Why would Fred Hobbs, a state Democratic Party Executive Committee member, believe anything that he sees and hears on Fox News? And secondly, why is he even watching it in the first place, unless it was for the entertainment value only.

  4. Zooey Says:

    Jeebus, Fred....

  5. aquarius2 Says:

So Mr. Hobbs is blaming Fox news for his lack of information? Yeah and I have a bridge to sell this guy. For starters, is Mr. Hobbs totally unaware that Fox news is nothing more than an arm of the Republican party? He would have to be pretty damn stupid to be a Demorcrat and believe Fox news. Nope, there was more to his statement than Fox news.

  6. misshusseinmolly Says:

I hope someone manages to tell Hobbs that there are other sources for news -- sources that are actually accurate, even.

  7. soysauce Says:

Ha, I'm from TN, and you would be suprised to hear what the people say about Obama. Come, on, how dumb can you be to believe that a person running for president is a terriorist.

  8. votenic Says:

You get incorrect information from all news, there is very little real truth left

  9. Bob Says:

Why isn't fox held accountable for reporting false information? They do it all the time. It seems like someone could bring a legit slander suit, if not something more like inticing hate crimes. Do they have some sort of umbrella disclaimer that allows them to report lies as facts?

  10. Kira Says:

This just confirms my suspicions that our congresspeople are listening/buying into the repuke's echo chamber.

It also confirms another suspicion I have -- they are too stupid to be in a position of great power, making decisions that will affect us for decades.

WAKE UP YOU STUPID SHEEPLE ON CAPITOL HILL!!!

  11. Kira Says:

    Bob,

    The Media Can Legally Lie

In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

Fascism is alive, well & kickin'.

  12. Marie Says:

OMG, Flip Wilson has returned from the grave -- "the devil made me do it!
I left my brain at the door, and Fox News was able to penetrate my skull and put those notions inside my empty head."

What kind of brain-dead person is he -- he relies on the propaganda network for all his facts - that's how he hases his decisions?

  13. Marie Says:

  14. hanshiro Says:

Shorter Fred Hobbs: "I hope to graduate to dressing myself someday...."

  15. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I hope that the Democrats aren't giving this a$$hat any money to help with his campaign. He's too stupid to be in Congress.

Fred Hobbs, a state Democratic Party Executive Committee member in Tennessee

If Fred is that gullible, he may want to seriously think about stepping down as an Executive Committee member.
    Just sayin....

  17. Doc Rock Says:

What kind of Democrat watches Fox News? Bush dog? Dumbbass?

  18. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

oops...I see that Mr. Hobbs is not an elected official. Thank god for that.

  19. 5th Estate Says:

    Dobbs is clearly a DINO.

In general it seems to me to be all too common in State and Municipal politics for candidates to officially associate themselves with whichever party provides the best chances of them getting elected.

  20. rmwarnick Says:

Can they revoke his Democratic Party membership for watching Fox News? If that's not the rule, it should be.

Wow. That's fcked up. It does explain why outright lies are reported with regularity on that network. Still, slander isn't protected under the First Amendment. This problem seems to be more about 'friends in high places'. That's been the real problem for these past eight years. It'd be nice if the next FCC simply yanked their license.

  23. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

The closest I come to watching Fox News, if that's what you call it, is the sound bytes on Countdown with Keith. I do think I could get a good laugh at Britt the twit.

  29. Left Coast Mike Says:

Hobbs must be a Republscum tool that pretended to be a Democrat. Only GOP pukes could be that stupid.

  30. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

A friend of mine in Indiana told me he doesn't even get Fox News. I thought he didn't have cable or satellite, he says, "no, I've taken it off my programming". That gave me an Idea. I'm going to do that to every TV I see. Just wait 'till no one is looking and bip bip bip no Fox News on the TV anymore. Novel idea huh?

  31. Angry McAngus Says:

Shorter Fred Hobbs: I mistook Democrat for Dixiecrat. My bad.

  32. Kira Says:

10 to 1, the only channel playing on the TVs in the White House & on Capitol Hill is FOX Noise.

I observe that the most frightened people in America are white males, particularly from the South. All you guys are scared silly of real change, a characteristic your republican party exploits to the hilt! I'm glad Hobbs realized his mistake in believing Fox (a propaganda machine of the Bush Reich and the republican party) and not getting the facts first. I just hope the lesson sticks and other white guys get it too.

  37. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Is Hobbs a "self-loathing Democrat"? Why would he watch a "news" source that consistently placed his party in the most unflattering light possible?

This guy has got to be a plant of some kind.

You don't have to be a Democrat not to watch Fox,you need only to have a brain.

  40. Kira Says:

This is off-topic, but please join in and call Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi @ (202) 225-0100 and DEMAND she will stand up to bu*sh to stop telecom immunity.

Rep. Steny Hoyer is leading a "compromise" on the FISA reauthorization bill that would ultimately let the Bush administration and their friends at AT&T and Verizon off the hook for illegally spying on innocent Americans.

Last night, this so-called compromise was voted out of committee and as early as this morning the bill may be brought to the House floor for a full vote.

Speaker Pelosi can still stop this bill.

As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi can pull the bill from the floor and refuse to call a vote.

Call Speaker Pelosi right now and demand she stand up to President Bush and stop telecom immunity.

    Thanks, all. :)

I would like to see the demography of the viewers of Fox. I suspect it is mostly middle aged white men. We can thank Abrams, Olbermann, and Stewart for cutting the cord with young college age adults.

  44. tarazan Says:

I do have Fox News channel as part of my tv. cable package, but I don't watch it...

The last two time I watched Fox, was when I took my wife to see her doctor and another time to see her dentist.
I had to sit in the waiting room for over an hour in both visits watching Fox garbage.
I asked the receptionist in the doctor's office if the channel can be changed...she said : "No...it is fixed".
Simply, I was forced to watch it, just like when you're travelling thru airports...you have no choice..

  45. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Tarzan, what is the difference between that and state sponsored news? No one should be subjected to fake news. I was surprised that in May when I was in the Salt Lake City airport they had CNN on, not that that is any better huh?

  46. Yankeluh Says:

#1) I cannot believe that this idiot is allowed to be a Democratic State Committee member; #2) I cannot believe that he is stupid enough to believe anything he hears on Fox or that he would admit to watching the propaganda network; #3) IF this moron is on the state committee, I now understand why Gore lost Tennessee... because the people of the state are obviously dumber than rolled sh*t.

  47. RUCerious Says:

Let me see if I get this:

Hobbs heard someone on FauxSnooze remark about terrorist fist jabs, and conflated that into Obama's a terrorist?

    How dumb is this jackass?

  48. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Yankeluh I am sure he's hearing about it right now, if not I'm sticking my nine in my mouth.

  49. Kira Says:

    tarazan @46, Lone Voice @47

It is Soviet Style Media. Also - re:tarazan #46 ... I asked the receptionist in the doctor’s office if the channel can be changed…she said : “No…it is fixed”. Is that where the term "Fixed News" comes from?

    Yes - it's unbelievable.

    It Can Happen Here.

No, but it's not really relevant here. It's almost impossible for a public figure to successfully bring a libel or slander suit against a news organization.

  51. Art Says:

"I should have taken some time to check the accuracy of what I saw on television before speaking "

    Especially if you watch Fox.

I was at a party last week and someone mentioned that she didn't trust Obama because he is Muslim.
I looked at her and said, "You watch Fox news, right?"
    She said yes.

How many other places could she have gotten that opinion?

  52. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Art, that's too funny. Heres one for you. A friend says to me, "Iwas watching Fox and Friends yesturday, I don't think they like democrats". You think? At least he's trying.

  53. flex Says:

More proof Fox News is Evil Wingnut Extremist propaganda. More lies and deceit. This is why 10% of the 25% still approve of the corrupt Bush Administration. Fox News is the only channel that comes in consistently clear on the TV in most of America, so people are stuck watching it. Oh and the Blond bimbos with the sexy skirts also help.

  54. Buckie Boy Says:

What do they put in these peoples drinking water?

Faux Snooze has a direct line to the RNC and the White House for their news.

  66. jasperjava Says:

This is a great tactic. If a Dem says anything factually challenged or false, just say that you saw it on FOX"News". That way, you're excused from your mistake, and you repeat the meme that FOX is propaganda garbage. It's a win-win. I'm going to start doing from now on.

  67. djreedps Says:

Who is this idiot in Tennessee? First, he is a Democrat watching Fox News. I could see if he did that to counter their BS, but no he is really watching and BELIEVING Fox News crap.
Second, is he really that freaking gullible?

I think there should be an IQ test one must pass before running for office. I think this guy would probably score somewhere between turnip and Terri Schiavo on life support.
