Bolton: Israel Will Attack Iran After U.S. Election But Before Inauguration, Arab States Will Be ‘Delighted’

This morning on Fox News, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton continued his drumbeat for war against Iran. Adopting Bill Kristol’s argument, Bolton suggested that an attack on Iran depends on who Americans elect as the next President:

I think if they [Israel] are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President. I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.

Bolton gamed out the fallout from an attack on Iran. He claimed that Iran’s options to retaliate after being attacked are actually “less broad than people think.” He suggested that Iran would not want to escalate a conflict because 1) it still needs to export oil, 2) it would worry about “an even greater response” from Israel, 3) and it would worry about the U.S.’s response.

Bolton then concluded that Arab states would be excited if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran:

I don’t think you’d hear the Arab states say this publicly, but they would be delighted if the United States or Israel destroyed the Iranian nuclear weapons capability.

Watch it:

Bolton has said he is backing John McCain because he would handle the Iranian nuclear program in a “stronger” way than the Bush administration.

    War with Iran’s a done deal, folks…
It’s just a matter of time.
If Obama “wins,” they’ll start it just to phuque him up.
If it’s Bombin’ Johnnie, he’ll welcome the distraction.

Why exactly should John Bolton know anything about what the administration is planning? Hasn’t he been gone for over a year? I’ve always assumed that when you leave your security clearance vanishes. So who is whispering secrets into his ear violating their security agreement?

If he isn’t part of the administration, you might just as well ask the Pursian rug murchant in the shop down the corner, what is going to happen Iran. At least they could tell you something about what is happening inside Iran.

Doesn’t this statement kind of undermine their whole talking point of how dangerous the Iranians are?

On the one hand, Bolt-on says we have to bomb Iran because they’re such a threat. But then, as a means of making an attack more palatable to those war-weary among us, he assures us that Iran would not want to escalate a conflict that was inflicted upon them.

    Make sense to anybody?

If Iran would be reluctant to escalate a conflict when they are attacked, why in god’s name would they seek to threaten us with a first strike?

How in the hell did this man ever achieve any kind of position of responsibility in life?

Two big differences: Kuwait WAS attacked by Iraq in the first conflict. (”The invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi troops was met with immediate economic sanctions against Iraq by some members of the UN Security Council, and with immediate preparation for war by the United States of America and the United Kingdom.”) We weren’t attacked by Iraq in the second one.

And, you said ‘all those nations’. We actually had world and UN support in the first one, but almost none in the second and did not have UN sanctions to do it, either.

Two very different situations. Need to get your facts straight.

OK. This is the second time in two days I’ve had to eat my words after posting information from ThinkProgress.

Adopting Bill Kristol’s argument, Bolton suggested that an attack on Iran depends on who Americans elect as the next President:

Bolton says a lot of crap but he did not say that. All you have to do is listen to the interview or read the god damned transcript.

I’m about this close (holds two fingers a 1/4 inch apart) from considering ThinkProgress as an unreliable source of information. I want ammunition to use against rightwingers but when I have to backtrack and doublecheck everything you say you’re not helping. You shouldn’t have to do that. They say enough whacked out stuff every day.

Behaving like Republicans, lying and spinning statements, putting words in other’s mouths ruins your credibility. (even if Bolton does believe it, which is true)

I think if they [Israel] are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President. I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.

Can you read? Can you hear? Putting Kristol’s words in his mouth is stupid. It makes your website look like Foxnews. I hate these motherlovers as much as anyone BUT YOU HAVE TO BE ACCURATE when you quote.

It burns my arse when I have to go back and apologize to idiot rightwingers for misquoting a braying arse like Bolton. Please, PLEASE make sure you are accurate. It means EVERYTHING.

By the way, I submitted this once with a couple of colorful words and it didn’t post. I went back to edit and everything I wrote was gone. I saved this draft in case it didn’t post. Your software really sucks big time.

  41. Cats r Flyfishn says:

It the big scheme of things, it matters very little if Iran has nuclear facilities. The only nation that used nuclear weapons and still continues to use depleted uranium is the United States of America. The world should be imposing sanctioning the US.

Iran would not use nuclear weapons on its neighbors because the fallout would drift over Iran. There’s absolutely no benefit to Iran to send nukes to Israel. This “be afraid” is nothing more than lies used to control the masses, us.

  42. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Israel can defend itself. They have enough planes and atomic weapons to wipe the Middle East. They don’t need us. They just enjoy stealing our tax dollars.

    My thoughts exactly

Bolton says Iran is irrational and superdangerous so the US and Israel must bomb them. But since Iran is not irrational nor superdangerous nobody needs to worry about retaliation.

I still have trouble grasping the fact this guy was actually US “ambassador” to the UN

  49. Kira says:

This has nothing to do with any real threat from Iran but a collusion between the neocon BFFs here & in Israel joined in a pact to try to influence our Presidential election. Scum of the earth.

Ray McGovern’s latest article is, as usual, right on target:

Bomb Iran? What’s to Stop Bush?

It’s crazy, but it’s coming soon. The armed forces are working out details. Impeachment may be the only way to stop it.

…Emerging from a 90-minute White House meeting with President George W. Bush on June 4, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the two leaders were of one mind:

“We reached agreement on the need to take care of the Iranian threat. I left with a lot less question marks [than] I had entered with regarding the means, the timetable restrictions, and American resoluteness to deal with the problem. George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on that matter before the end of his term in the White House.”

…Here’s the alarming thing: Unlike Iraq, which was prostrate after the Gulf War and a dozen years of sanctions, Iran can retaliate in a number of dangerous ways, launching a war for which our forces are ill-prepared.

The lethality, intensity and breadth of ensuing hostilities will make the violence in Iraq look, in comparison, like a volleyball game between St. Helena’s High School and Mount St. Ursula.

  50. Klem Kiddilehopper says:

    Cat r FlyFishn,

Tell me again why anyone in their right effing mind thinks asshat Bolton has any credibility about anything??

    Just saying . . .

  53. Fred says:

kira, their solution is alway to vanquish…….evolution anyone?

I agree that invading Iran or North Korea will be death and destruction on a much high scale than the horror we have seen in Iraq.

  54. pseudonymouslawyer says:

It’s a ridiculous and dangerous prediction. The most the United States or Israel can manage at this point is airstrikes (maybe a limited special forces-type incursion that would be very temporary). The regional Iraq war (it is now regional because the Iranians are certainly involved in the way that the US was involved in the early stages of its involvement in Vietnam — as advisers) will enlarge to include Israel and there is a real possibility that Iran will become openly engaged in Iraq if we or the Israelis attack Iran.

I think this sort of madness is beyond even George W. Bush.

rogerse, learn how to read. barfly did not say that and you know it. Your “debate style” of oversimplifying what the other person says does not give any credence to your own viewpoint at all. In fact, I rarely see you back up your assertions. Instead, you twist the words used in response into another meaning and attack the position you yourself stated. When are you going to face the fact that you are wrong, and it appears that you are wrong because your entire premise of facts is flawed. You believe things that were never true, and you support and justify our nation’s actions based on those falsehoods.

Bush I started Gulf War I by essentially giving Saddam permission to invade Kuwait.

Wasn’t one of the neocon selling points of te invasion of Iraq that “Arab states would never admit to it, but they would celebrate the end of Saddam’s reign”?

How well did that turn out?

    and:

Bolton has said he is backing John McCain because he would handle the Iranian nuclear program in a “stronger” way than the Bush administration.

Yeah, as if the two candidates were essentially equal in the eyes of Bolt-on, but McSame’s “stronger” stance toward Iran tips that very delicate balance. Otherwise, Bolt-on would totally support Barck, right?

Bolton then concluded that Arab states would be excited if the U.S. or Israel attacked Iran:

I don’t think you’d hear the Arab states say this publicly, but they would be delighted if the United States or Israel destroyed the Iranian nuclear weapons capability.

I must have missed the news on the day that the Arab states became the 51st U.S. state. Who gives a @%!# about the Arab states “excitement”? If we really wanted to “excite the Arab states”, we could attack Israel instead of Iran.

If this story turns out to be true, this will be yet another sea change by the Bush administration, with regard to a President’s tenure and influence beyond his term.

Up to now, Presidents haven’t embarked on “new projects” in the waning days of their administrations (particularly militarily), doing only the bare minimum (defensive only, certainly not “actions of choice”) and leaving it for the next Commander-in-Chief.

All previous Presidents have recognized this as the territory of “stewardship” within the POTUS/CIC job description. You had your chance to design and shape the direction you believe the country ought to be headed in during your years of working with the Congress and from your bully pulpit talking to the American people. You may not unilaterally commit the nation to an irreversible path.

  82. Krazny says:

    sacopenapa Says:

If the Bush and co are stupid enough to use nuclear weapons to attack Iran. Kiss everything goodbye. We would be lucky to not be living in the dark ages at that point. Oil prices would skyrocket to the point of destroying the world economy. An attack using conventional weapons would drive up oil prices badly.

The issue the conservatives seem to be ignoring, is an attack on Iran would for national security reason be an attack on China. What happens if China starts calling in the markers on all the money the US owes them? We for a number of reasons cannot attack Iran. The only people who seem to think we can are the piss soaked trolls.

FISA: Demand accountability, reject meaningless court review
    LINK

According to media reports, Congress may soon take up a FISA bill with meaningless judicial review. Courts would be directed to look only at whether telecom companies got a note from the president, rather than considering if these companies actually broke the law.

While this plan is designed to make it look like there is a judicial process for companies accused of illegally handing over millions of phone calls and emails to the government, it really turns the court into nothing more than a rubber stamp.

This plan is completely unacceptable. It is not a compromise on immunity; it’s blanket immunity. I urge you to reject it.
Here’s how such proposals would offer blanket immunity in three steps: more at link

National Poll Shows That Latino Voters Favor Obama Over McCain
    June 16, 2008

Latino voters favor Obama over McCain, according to Latino Decisions Poll.

A new national survey of Latino voters shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with a nearly 3-to-1 advantage over his rival, Republican John McCain.

The survey found that 60 percent of Latinos planned to vote for Obama, compared to 23 percent for McCain, while 16 percent were undecided. Latino Decisions, a collaboration between Pacific Market Research and University of Washington political scientists Matt Barreto and Gary Segura, conducted the poll by telephone June 1–12.

Law School to Plan Bush War Crimes Prosecution

Press Release: Massachusetts School Of Law

17/06/08 “ICH” — – A conference to plan the prosecution of President Bush and other high administration officials for war crimes will be held September 13-14 at the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover .

“This is not intended to be a mere discussion of violations of law that have occurred,” said convener Lawrence Velvel, dean and cofounder of the school. “It is, rather, intended to be a planning conference at which plans will be laid and necessary organizational structures set up, to pursue the guilty as long as necessary and, if need be, to the ends of the Earth.”

“We must try to hold Bush administration leaders accountable in courts of justice,” Velvel said. “And we must insist on appropriate punishments, including, if guilt is found, the hangings visited upon top German and Japanese war-criminals in the 1940s.”

Velvel said past practice has been to allow U.S. officials responsible for war crimes in Viet Nam and elsewhere to enjoy immunity from prosecution upon leaving office. “President Johnson retired to his Texas ranch and his Defense Secretary Robert McNamara was named to head the World Bank; Richard Nixon retired to San Clemente and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was allowed to grow richer and richer,” Velvel said.

He noted in the years since the prosecution and punishment of German and Japanese leaders after World War Two those nation’s leaders changed their countries’ aggressor cultures. One cannot discount contributory cause and effect here, he said.

“For Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and John Yoo to spend years in jail or go to the gallows for their crimes would be a powerful lesson to future American leaders,” Velvel said.

The conference will take up such issues as the nature of domestic and international crimes committed; which high-level Bush officials, including Federal judges and Members of Congress, are chargeable with war crimes; which foreign and domestic tribunals can be used to prosecute them; and the setting up of an umbrella coordinating committee with representatives of legal groups concerned about the war crimes such as the Center for Constitutional Rights, ACLU, National Lawyers Guild, among others.

The Massachusetts School of Law at Andover was established in 1988 to provide an affordable, quality legal education to minorities, immigrants and students from low-income households that might otherwise be denied the opportunity to obtain a legal education and practice law. Its founder, Dean Velvel, has been honored by the National Law Journal and cited in various publications for his contributions to the reform of legal education.

Throughout the 1980s, Bolton was a leader of Republican Party efforts to undermine voting rights for minorities.

In the mid-1990s, Bolton was involved in a political money-laundering scandal that opened a channel for funds from Taiwan to Republican candidates. (ibid.) Prior to his appointment as UN Ambassador, Bolton was deeply involved in the Bush administration’s overt campaign to undermine international law.

Bolton masterminded the systematic abrogation of several key international treaties including: the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention; the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty; the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

During his work for the Reagan administration, Bolton supported the Nicaraguan contras and sought to deny federal investigators access to key evidence in the Iran Contra scandal. (John Bolton, Officialssay)

Personal scandals have also tarnished John Bolton. A woman accused him of hostile intimidation that led to a case of sexual discrimination. Larry Flynt published evidence that Bolton’s first marriage had collapsed after he forced his wife to have group sex at Plato’s Retreat during the Reagan administration. (Rawstory)

Actually, the Iranian nuclear power plants are a danger to their neighbors and their own population. I don’t think they should be building them.

McCain’s Nuclear Power Policy Identical to Bush Administration’s

GOP Presidential candidate John McCain’s ambitious plan to build 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030 as a means to combat global warming and add juice to the power grid is a policy ripped from the Bush administration’s failed National Energy Policy, first introduced by Vice President Dick Cheney during the height of the California energy crisis seven years ago.

Shoeless – with all the solar energy available – all we need is efficient solar concentrators, storage of the heat i.e. water pipes along with wind, water or other energy generation for the dark hours. We really don’t need dangerous nuclear power.

Most of the US in unsuitable for growing sugar cane. However, there is an incredible capacity to do so in Cuba. If we weren’t being ruled by brain dead right-wingers, we could be importing massive amounts of sugar cane from Cuba to make ethanol. It is 8 times more efficient than making ethanol from corn.

Republicans won’t allow us to do so.

I meant no offense in my concern about Obama… I am probably one of the more supportive of Obama that posts here. But I do have my fears… one is that you can not bear to hear and another is we are going to bomb Iran.

Personally, I feel burying our heads in the sand and pretending things will not happen is not the way to handle future possible problems. During the rally in Portland Oregon, where a record 75,000 attended, I feel security should have done a better job.

Helium-3 … hadn’t seen that yet. Thanks for the link.

Hell yea, let’s strip mine the moon! [Just kidding ... sorta] I mean, the moon is pretty important to us … maybe some strip mining wouldn’t throw it out of kilter and if done properly, we could be working on using all types of alternative energy.

  178. shoeless says:

    Kira,
It wouldn’t exactly be strip mining, in the sense of plowing down the mountains in West Virginia. Nonomachines will be used to extract various elements from the lunar surface. Moon colonies will be dependent on nanomachines to extract everything from oxygen and hydrogen(for breathing, bathing, and drinking), to aluminum, and of course the cash crop, helium 3. Silicone will be extracted to produce solar cells to run the whole operation.

  188. shoeless says:

Yes, fusion reactors, moon colonies, and nanomachines are a bit in the future. However, they are technologically feasible. Now is the time to start. Instead of subsidizing oil companies, we should do as John Kennedy said, and “Go to the moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard.”

The right-wingers always said that space exploration was a waste of money. As it turns out, the moon has vast potential for energy, beyond anything we could have imagined. The US is the only country so far to go to the moon. If we play our cards right, we could be the Saudi Arabia of energy for the 21st century.

    Or we could do nothing.

  189. Kira says:

Hopes & Dreams. I would love to see it happen and agree we should start … right after Obama is sworn in. And NO PNAC-ers should be allowed anywhere near the project.

    MOONBAT Says:
If Brazil is using 100% ethanol in all of their cars, why can’t we? I believe they derive all of it from sugar cane.

Well, Brazil only has about 1% of the cars we do. I don’t like using farm land for fuel. Raises price of food and could lead to shortage of food in future. I’m for solar panels and plug-in cars. People who had EV-1’s in the 1990’s loved them.

  196. RUCerious says:

When you peruse the National Renewable Energy Lab web site, they have more excuses about why hydrogen isn’t a viable fuel source than a five year old without her homework.

WTF? I’m not letting anyone think for me. OBVIOUSLY.

All I want is accuracy and honesty. If it was ThinkProgress’s interpretation then SAY THAT. Don’t extrapolate what the war criminals say, QUOTE THEM ACCURATELY. That hurts them more than anything. You do not need that style of reporting. Leave that to the Republicans.

By the way, I’m sure Bolton agrees with Kristol 100%. But that wasn’t what he said in the interview. The only way we can seperate ourselves from the propaganda wars of the Republicans is to be honest, accurate and on target.

While you are 100% correct, that will not stop them from starting another war. All is needed is a staged attack on a large scale, just like 9/11, blame it on Iranians, and the Robots/Sheep will line up behind Bush, who then will declare Martial Law. Worse case scenario.

I see now it is OK to now shine a light on Israel, whereas 7 years ago, even Liberals were screaming “Anti-Semite”, if you even dared looked at them wrong.

I have yet to see a clear minded view posted on here concerning the truth of the situation regaurding Irans potential use of nukes in real or in threat. To many of you so called Americans are spouting your left wing hate instead of taking a close look at the what if’s of Irans potential actions. These are the things the Americans and rest of the world have to debate over. This is a real threat that if left unchecked an then goes on to be a real action, will create a mess that might actualy make you loons wake up an take notice. But because of your liberal slant an head in the sand thoughts, well it will be too late. you think things are tough now? let Iran toss a nuke. To also say that they wouldn’t be foolish enough to take on the world with a single act, hmmm didn’t we have that same problem back in 1939….go figure.

  208. jmh423 says:

I think Israel has no choice other than to bomb Iran and kill as many as possible…It is a very serious problem for a nation to (maybe someday) be able to produce a nuclear weapon that is not sanctioned by the world nuclear regulatory body……..RIGHT!!!!

I wonder how many of the nit wits that take the Boltons or Kristols seriously know that Israel has the largest illegal nuclear arsenal in the world by far. Also they have continually shown they have absolutely NO respect for international law or even common decency…How many countries has Iran attacked and occupied in the last century?? 0….How many of its neighbors has Israel attacked and occupied??? Every one, multiple times..Its whole existance has been one big occupation!!! Israel has as much right to bomb Iran as they had to bomb the King David Hotel, The USS Liberty, or as Hitler had to invade Poland in ‘39…I hope if these Aholes cross into Iranian territory they get obliterated…When is the world going to wise up and see these criminals for exactly what they are???

From what I have been educated about this issue by others who have followed it more closely, Georgia was arming up through NATO months before this conflict. Russia saw this and since South Ossetians are of Russian descent they gathered troops outside of the border as a precaution. Georgia has been obviously attempting to annex South Ossetia which achieved its independence from Georgia by choice after the breakup of the Soviet Socialist Republics in 1991.

Georgia attacked South Ossetia first without provocation and focused their attack on primarily civilian targets killing over 2,000 mainly unarmed citizens in 24 hours bombing occupied hospitals, apartment buildings and private homes. Our media did not report on the first 24 hours of the attack. Once Russia launched a counter attack to drive out the well armed Georgian army and protect South Ossetian civilians, our media started covering it as “naked aggression” conveniently ignoring the Georgian initiation of conflict.

Here is an interview with a 12 year old Bay area girl caught in the conflict who escaped back to the States by Sheppard Smith of Fox News. Watch how fast Smith cuts away when the girl starts spilling the beans about the attack and especially when the Aunt chimes in with the facts. Smith promises to get back to them and gives them 30 seconds to continue and then cuts the Aunt off as quickly as possible when she continues with her observations of the conflict. I love Smith’s final comment- “And understandably, there are grey areas in war.” Yeah and truth isn’t one of them now is it Sheppard? 3:47 seconds. Watch it and form your own opinion.
