Brokaw to host Meet the Press through Election Day.

At the end of today’s Meet the Press, Brian Williams announced that Tom Brokaw will be moderating the show through Election Day. In a statement, Brokaw said, “Tim made ‘Meet the Press’ the center of the universe for informative and lively discussions of public affairs, particularly the exciting 2008 campaign for president, and I intend to continue that commitment to our viewers.”

    Slow news day?

  2. Zooey Says:

I hope Brokaw actually holds some feet to the fire. It would be refreshing.

  3. upside99 Says:

Guess it is better than Morning Joe Scarborough or Dancing David Gregory.

  4. Zooey Says:

Oh lordy, you're right about that, upside99. Yikes. :D

I would like to see Meet The Press move away from the idea of providing "balance" and, instead, focus on uncovering the objective truth. That is what journalism is about, after all. You need to hear from people who know the objective truth, and forget about hearing from people who you know are lying or simply naysaying whatever the other side is saying.

Stop putting both a liberal and a conservative on to discuss issues, because over the past seven years, the conservatives have usually been the ones peddling falsehoods.

  6. upside99 Says:

I personally would have liked to see KO get the gig, but I know that would scare off any Repug from ever coming on the show. Heh heh.

  7. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

KO emphatically stated, in response to a false story being published in the New York Post, that he neither sought the job nor does he considers himself qualified to do it.

  8. upside99 Says:

    Wayne,

I heard that bit on his show and how that Moonie Page Six Be-otch said that both KO and Mathews were angling for the job at Russert's memorial service. She is a real piece of work!

  9. Game of Life Says:

I can't believe they are making a big deal of Sen. Obama's not accepting public funds. So what! What's the big deal?

In theory, I agree. But I think there becomes a matter of defining 'objective truth'. The people running these shows are not qualified to determine such things. Perhaps we need to set a standard in American 'Journalism" to include evidence and facts based empirical data (proof). But, I guess that warring factions provide higher ratings, and so we will continue to see that rather than integrity.

  11. upside99 Says:

    GoL,

It scares the crap out of Johnny Boy, because he knows he can't match Obama's fund raising. And will be limited in the amount of money he can spend in the last months of the campaign.

Good luck with that. "Balance" requires nothing more than decent stenographer skills whereas "uncovering the objective truth" requires actual work, not to mention integrity.

I think they (Big Corporations) know that they are losing power, so they lie about Obama's motives and try to make him look like a bad guy for rejecting them and their money.

I suspect that it's going to get worse. Corporate America won't relinquish their power very easily and I imagine we may soon see a new breed of trolls who flock here here to bash Obama over such trivial nonsense rather than any substantial issues.

Power to the people won't be an easy victory. We just have to keep fighting the smears with the journalistic integrity that only the internet is providing.

  14. Game of Life Says:

I must have missed the debate on Iran.

    Wayne you are absolutely right.

  15. Game of Life Says:

Sen. Biden told graham (paraphrasing) "You can have your opinions, but you can't change facts."

    Bravo!

Credible journalism schools teach all of that. The problem comes when you have an administration that will cut off access to reporters who print things the WH doesn't want to see printed (such as the objective truth). So, to protect their access to people who will tell them what's really going on, the MSM has to happily print the lies being peddled by "senior administration officials". What the WH is doing by keeping their own identities secret is trying to give the impression that there is support for their policies from people other than just the top people, when it is often (I'm sure) those same top people that are being quoted.

The White House has been doing everything they can to keep the public from learning the truth. It's time for the MSM to come clean and reveal who's been lying, and to stop quoting them in the press. Why bother getting a comment from someone whose word can't be trusted?

But the MSM is being run by BIG Corporations who benefit from the Bush Regime's policies - so of course they are going to support GOP lies and slander as "balanced" news.

I think the fight ultimately goes back to taking power from Corporate America and giving it back to the people. Until journalists are beholden to Americans as their 'bosses' and not Corporate America, I doubt we'll see little if any change.

And, I firmly believe that until we fix our education system to produce thinkers rather than sheep, we're going to continue to be a reality-show-oriented 'entertain me' society that wants to watch WWF style "news" rather than a presentation of the facts.

  18. Evergreen2U Says:

agree with Wayne: truth and facts trump so called "balance".

If it became a fact based show....with instant feed back to moderator to detect then confront lies/non fact, wouldn't it be great?

  19. marcella Says:

I like KO because he is biased in my direction I guess, but he is neither fair nor balanced. Recently he has shown himself to be no better than BO. I used to respect him but not so much any more. I certainly would not want him to have the job. I've always liked Tom Brokaw and I think he can do a good job.

  20. Kira Says:

Whoa, marcella. KO is light years away from BO - sheesh.

Maybe it seems weird to hear the "other" side of things since the media blackout of the last 8 years & that's why you think it sounds so biased.

I say, it's about time to hear the other side of things.

Not to say I agree with KO on all things, because I don't, but he is providing us with real journalism.

Too bad the WWF style consists of all talk.
Forcing some of these lying politicians into a bobwire cage match with a 350 pound wrestler would be poetic justice.lol

    #9 GoL
They make a big deal of Obama's campaign finance arrangement because they have nothing else to bash him on.
Actually, as eloquently explained by Joe Biden today, 1.5 million donors giving less than $100 each is tantamount to public financing, though not in the strict sense of the word. It DOES free Obama from any obligations to the big money donors that were the crux of campaign reform in the first place. McCain can't get this kind of money unless he goes to the deep pocketed donors.

  23. Marie Says:

    Great comments, Wayne and unbelievable.

  24. Marie Says:

Brokaw has the "gravitas" to qualify him as moderator of MTP - actually moreso than Russert did.
Whether or not he will stick his neck out when it comes to resisting the owners and sponsors of NBC is another story that remains to be seen.
The media is owned, dominated and totaly influenced by the interests of their owners - hence the over-the-top bashing of Obama who has rejected them and their $$ - and the beatification of McCain, who obviously cannot make a gaffe so big as to cause any untoward bashing of him.

  25. tokin librul Says:

How can Brokaw do Meet The Press?

He doesn't even have the whole alphabet.

How can he lick the prostates of the Pukes without an "L" in his vocabulary?

this has been the conscious, delib erate policy of EVERY regime sinec Wilson, at least...

  27. Uosdwis Says:

I think the Edgar Winter group said it best: "Free Ride!" The pols will relax, knowing they can go on MTP and there will be no "you said this back then, take a look. Those were your words."

I've got a couple of links to share. Anybody here heard of Edward Bernays? [1891-1995] The video is very enlightening.

The Father of Propaganda & Spin

This is a 7 min. video: Edward Bernays, the Assassin of Democracy

  29. republicanSScareme Says:

Thanks, NBC. Tom Brokaw is one of the great bores of the Western world. Whenever I want to go to sleep on the couch, I turn on Tom Brokaw.

    Lightweight on steroids.

  30. naldo Says:

Brokaw, a guy in a profession where good speaking skills are necessary, is a mumbling idiot. Some say it's alcohol, but I know drunks who speak a lot more clearly than he does.

But he's a resonable replacement for a chubby cheap-shot artist like Russert. Maybe even an improvement.

Watching American TV and hoping for anything intelligent and unbiased isn't only waste of time, it also gives me the dribbling shee-its.

Balance these days usually means putting out the conservative view and then the Conservative framing of liberal views...

  32. Robert the Robot Says:

Brokaw (D) is no different from any other Democrat. 99% of Democrats abuse alcohol and drugs. The figure for Rebublicans is much lower, around 20%.

That's because 80% of Republicans are too busy sucking cocks...

  33. naldo Says:

TheRight sounds like another stupid Fox sucker (funniest when said aloud).
