Imus takes a racial swipe at another black athlete.
This morning on his show “Imus in the Morning,” host Don Imus “made a racially freighted comment” about an African-American athlete. Imus and his colleagues were discussing Adam “Pacman” Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and how he wants to now drop his nickname. At one point, Imus’s co-host, Warner Wolf, notes that Jones has “been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.” Imus’s reaction:
IMUS: What color is he?
WOLF: He’s African-American.
IMUS: Well, there you go. Now we know.

In 2007, Imus was fired from his radio program for calling the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos.”

Never been an Imus fan, but MAYBE, MAYBE I could have given the guy the benefit of the doubt on the first scandal i.e. that he just made a stupid off-color (no pun intended) remark…but this is so blatant that I’m sorry, the man has had his second chance which is more than most people get.
He needs to lose this show too, and never get another one.

If Imus was smart, he stay well clear of anything that has anything to do with race.
To play devil’s advocate, Imus apologists suggest that he was commenting that Jones was arrested 6 times, because he was black. As a sarcastic comment on racial bias, where blacks are more frequently arrested than whites, only due to discrimination.
The best case portends that Imus is misunderstood, but still not smart enough to steer clear of racial issues. Worst case, it’s another racial slur. Even considering the benefit of the doubt, maybe it’s time for Imus to retire.

While I’m sure the USDOJ figures are accurate, I suspect they don’t tell the whole story, since there’s a fairly compelling argument that white arrestees are more likely to get lighter sentences (such as probation, community service, etc.) for crimes that result in incarceration for non-whites. But that’s another story — one I won’t go into here.
So let’s pretend for a moment that these DOJ figures were gathered on a level playing field — that blacks, Hispanics, and whites are all penalized equally for their crimes. Even if you make this dubious assumption, these figures indicate the following:
– For every 100,000 black males, 95,382 are NOT sentenced prisoners.
– For every 100,000 Hispanic males, 98,253 are NOT sentenced prisoners.
– For every 100,000 white males, 99,227 are NOT sentenced prisoners.
There are two conclusions you can draw from this. First, the overwhelming majority of ALL these groups are not in prison. Second, a small minority of all these groups ARE in prison. No group has gotten off scot-free. Imus’ implication that a black man getting arrested several times is no surprise (and downright predictable) is not only inaccurate, but way off the mark. And the fact that Imus specifically asked about the man’s race before rendering his judgment does, indeed, make the comment racist.

The only point I’m trying to make is that young men do stupid things and it’s ridiculous to focus on any single group within the community of professional athletes. Pro athletes are a unique group that operate under different rules. And they have a much higher arrest and incarceration rate than anyone approaching their income tax bracket. Country, race or sport, the numbers are similar.
Plus, some of the best times of my life were just outside Boston. My Dad’s half of the family is still in New England. But, I find New York based “entertainment” boring and irrelevant. Once again, I’m sorry, no offense or judgment was intended. Celtics Rule!

They’re incarcerated because top of the line defense attorneys cost beaucoup bucks. Poor, mis-educated people without attorneys are easy pickings for prosecutors who use them to prop up their conviction rates.
That was the lesson of OJ and why white people hated the verdict. White people learned what black people already knew. If you’re rich…in America you can literally get away with murder EVEN IF YOU’RE BLACK!

But here’s what bothers me about this. Imus is not a stupid man. It’s a little hard for me to believe that he’d be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice in rapid succession after many years of experience in the public eye… Are we sure he’s not just pointing out that black people get arrested more often (unfairly) in situations like bar/club fights?
Second, even if he is blatantly racist, we can not have free speech unless we are willing to defend the rights of people we disagree with, no matter how vile we consider them. If Imus is not free to speak his mind, then neither are you or I.
