Hmmm…I think I can understand why the Army wants some oversight of contractors. They are probably tired of their soldiers getting electrocuted in the shower, or getting sick from having to bathe and launder their clothing with contaminated water.

But why would the White House have any objections to making sure that our contractors demonstrate some compentence? Oh right — it would cut into their profit margin.

The Army Contracting Command will be headed initially by Jeffrey Parsons, a civilian official, an appointment that underscores how few senior Army officers there are with extensive credentials in defense contracting. (April 2008)

This is to help the Army combat Contract Fraud from an article back in April. The problem is they are understaffed and are not prepared to deal with this many wars all at the same time. In April, the Army had plans to hire 1,400 new personnel to help with these ongoing problems. But it will take 2 to 3 years to hire that many people.

This administration is only perpetuating the problem, with an inadequate amount of people doing the acquisitions and investigating potential fraud.

“Since 2005, the Army Criminal Investigation Command has opened 168 investigations related to contract fraud in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan, according to spokesman Chris Grey. Ninety-five of those cases are ongoing. Of the 73 that have been closed, the subjects were indicted, the allegations turned out to be false, or the inquiry ended because of a lack of evidence.”

Last year, the White House tried to block legislation that would limit the use of no-bid contracts and require greater congressional oversight. Despite Bush’s opposition, the Senate passed the bill unanimously, and the House approved it with 347 votes.

This is hardly surprising for a privatization ideologue like Bush where free markets rule and if innocent Iraqis should get killed then caveat emptor and if tax payer dollars are lost/wasted/stolen, then it’s just another reason to lower taxes.

“Off topic”, but sheds light on just how f***ed up the Pentagon is and out of whack their priorities are thanks to this criminal administration and their “leadership” (makes me want to puke):

Ken Ham, chief wackaloon at Answers in Genesis, was invited to speak…at a Pentagon prayer breakfast.

Just let that sink in.

There are people at the Pentagon who are in charge of planning where your sons and daughter and nephews and nieces and other beloved family members and friends will be sent to put their lives at risk. There are people there who can send missiles and bombers anywhere in the world. There are people there who control nuclear weapons.

And they think Ken Ham is a fine-and-dandy, clever feller.

It’s almost enough to make me wish I could pray. It’s not just Ham, either — it’s that the people with the big guns have prayer breakfasts.

And then, somehow, he segues into babbling about the existence of life on other worlds. He doesn’t think there is any. Look at the logic this kook uses:

The real world is the biblical world–a universe designed by God with the Earth at the spiritual focal point, not an evolutionary universe teeming with life. … Extraterrestrial life is an evolutionary concept; it does not comport with the biblical teachings of the uniqueness of the Earth and the distinct spiritual position of human beings.

Because the bible says we are the focus of the entire universe, there can’t possibly be any competitors. Of course, this means that his god created this vast, empty, uninhabitable space for no reason other than that we’ll have twinkly little stars in the sky at night…but hey, that’s the crazy Christian deity, always doing irrational stuff and encouraging his followers to be equally nuts.
