House subcommittee subpoenas Feith.

By Amanda Terkel on Jun 24th, 2008 at 4:58 pm

House subcommittee subpoenas Feith.

Last week, former undersecretary of defense Doug Feith was scheduled to testify before a House Judiciary subcommittee, but he refused to appear at the last minute to avoid testifying alongside Colin Powell’s former chief of staff, Lawrence Wilkerson. Today, the subcommittee issued a subpoena to compel Feith’s testimony:

“While most witnesses with relevant information appear before Congress voluntarily, in some cases, it is necessary to compel their testimony,” said Rep. Nadler. “It is simply not prudent to rely on the voluntary promise to appear of a witness who already has broken such an agreement. I hope that it will not become necessary to issue this subpoena, but Congress has the prerogative and duty to conduct meaningful oversight to ensure a robust system of checks and balances.”

    Terrific

When do you plan on getting started with that ?

    I’m guessing next January.

  3. robbez_92107 says:

Why? He’s just going to look like the stupidest MF’er on the planet.

  4. Chuck Feney says:

Hey House of Reps, don’t go to court to enforce the subpoena, just use the power of inherent contempt that you already have. Practice this on Miers, Bolton, Rove et. al.

  5. Freedom Rebel says:

Since when has it been your prerogative to conduct meaningful oversight?? We have yet to see any robust system of checks and balances. IMO it has been completely one-sided. If Congress had actually conducted any meaningful oversight; we would all be watching Cheney being tried for Impeachment and Bush following right after him. Please spare us all your platitudes Nadler they are as empty as your promises…

  6. Chuck Feney says:

Addington is supposed to taking the hot seat tomorrow in front of Congress, if he doesn’t end up doing a Feith or the WH doesn’t claim executive privilege, again.

  7. Zooey says:

If Feith fails to comply with the subpoena — arrest him.

    No sternly worded letters!!

  8. Chuck Feney says:

My oops. I read my calendar wrong. Addington on Thursday: same day as FISA filibuster. I’ll make the popcorn.

You mean they haven’t blocked his testimony yet? Given how much Addington helped enable this illegal administration, I’m surprised they’re even letting him leave Cheney’s side. I would be very suroprised if they let Addington testify, unless it’s not under oath. Then I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

The last thing George Bush wants is for anyone to feel they might go to jail if they tell the truth about him. So he’ll stop them from having to testify under oath. Did you know that the word “testify” comes from the same root word as “testes”? In Ancient Rome, a man (women were not allowed to testify in court) would literally swear on his balls to tell the truth. If he lied, he would lose his balls. Can we go back to that practice now? Starting with Bush and Cheney.

  10. nanlichi says:

So I gotta know barackocarter, you are an untiring defender of Bush, what is it that you like about the man?

Is it just the way his sack bangs against your chin? Surely there’s more to you than that.

  11. Zooey says:

The “barackocarter” troll is obviously unemployed — or unemployable.

  12. SP Biloxi says:

Feith + inherit contempt = frog march to the pokey.

  13. Bob says:

Send him to a ‘black site’, see if that will compel some testimony. He is, afterall, a danger to our freedom. Someone like that shouldn’t be allowed to roam the street, much less decide whether or not to testifiy before Congress. Throw him in jail, then maybe he’ll talk. Don’t let him out before he tells everything. Seems only fair.

  14. RantingTommy says:

    nanlichi, he’s just scared

he’s frightened to death of the ‘other’

whether it’s muslims, liberals, blacks, gays, hispanics, he is shaking in his boots, scared to death, afraid of American ideals, willing to give up his liberty to FEEL safe

in other words, he’s a typical republican coward

no surprise that he looks to a former male cheerleader like bush for protection

his little sister protected him in school

  15. Hussein McCain says:

Ocarter, I think you could use a hug. Let’s make the world better, together.

  16. livelongandprosper says:

Yawn. More politicaly motivated investigations in an election year. zzzzzzz.

Oh wait, somebody got a blowjob? IMPEACH

  17. RantingTommy says:

    we forgot the rule:

all investigations of public officials are politically motivated witch-hunts, unless the target is a Democrat

    republicans are so childish

  18. Hussein McCain says:

Ocarter, I just realized you’re RumpsFelt, let’s skip the hug.

  19. upside99 says:

    RantingTommy Says:

I wonder if Feith will wear some Depends to keep his bowels and bladder under control? I saw how Jon Stewart had him quaking, with a couple of softballs.

    This ought to be fun!

  20. RantingTommy says:

Fear is the primary motivating factor for all republicans, except for those at the very top. Those are the ones that keep pushing the fear, to manipulate the weak and cowardly (thier base)

  21. Namtillaku says:

Oh goodie. T.V. can has got boring.

  22. 5th Estate says:

You know, quite a lot of people were thrown in jail for a while just for exrecising their rights of free speech and assembly in oppostion to a war the Feith and the other usual suspects promulgated and prosecuted illegally.

I don’t recall any protesters, who were actually acting in the country’s actual best interests, and who have been proven right and justified in their protests, were EVER given anything like the courtesy being extended to Feith et al in the form of these oh so grandiloquent letters of the mildest opprobrium.

The protocol should be: issue the invite and demand a 24-hour acceptance–that becomes a contract to appear ( the date doesn;t matter at that point. Then issue a subpoena with a non-negotiable date on it according to the letter of the law and then IMMEDIATELY arrest them if they don’t comply, slap them with inherent contempt and then Subpoena them AGAIN!.

  23. nanlichi says:

    Ranting Tommy,

You are right, it’s primarily fear that drives these cowards to seek a protector. KKKarl knew it and played that card just right. I don’t think it will work again. Oh sure, there wll always be the weakest of the weak, the 25%ers that are going to vote based on their irrational fears, but there is nothing you can say to them to change that. There is a segment in the middle that gave the Chimp the benefit of the doubt and are seeing that we were lied to, and that group is going to make this next election an ass kicking like we haven’t seen for a long time. Bring it on!

  24. had enough says:

    watch Bush’s War

What a trip down memory lane – the years of blogging and an outline of the thuggery, including Feith. Also, a recommend for the new converts just catching on as this movie is gentle

  25. 5th Estate says:

ANyone want to bet on Feith’s eventual testimony–if he ever shows? My guesses:

    “I don’t recall”
    “I wasn’t there”
    “I didn’t do it”
    “I never said that”
    “blah blah argle bargle doodlie-doo”
“It was a brilliant plan that was poorly exexuted”

  26. Marie says:

Sorry to be off topic, but this is the latest from the ignorant oaf in the white house

Bush To Filipino President: “I Am Reminded Of The Great Talent Of The — Of Our Philippine-Americans When I Eat Dinner At The White House”

  27. Buckie Boy says:

Congress has the prerogative and duty to conduct meaningful oversight to ensure a robust system of checks and balances.

You can start anytime now….(crickets chirping)

  28. KingCranky says:

Just make sure that Feith is under oath for his testimony.

And since, as that lout Tommy Franks ably noted, Feith is the “stupidest fooking guy on earth”, make sure Dougie is reminded, with each and every question, that he’s under oath.

In short, make the worm squirm.

  29. questioneverything says:

Will anyone responsible for hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths be prosecuted? Will anyone lose their jobs (unless of course they rape children on the Washington mall)? Nah, too hard to explain upholding the constitution and the law.

  30. ProgressivePam says:

Whatever happened to the “land of the BRAVE and the home of the FREE?” When did America breed so many cowards who are afraid to testify? When did they forget that the TRUTH shall set them free? Are they men or merely mice hiding in the corners afraid of their own shadows? The need to get a pair.
