Media Matters notes that on his radio show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh told a caller that “Democrats will bend over, grab the ankles, and say have your way with me” to African-Americans and gays:
CALLER: Hello. I want to know how the Republicans don’t need Christians and conservatives, and they think we’re 30 percent. Twelve percent black people in the population. Ten percent — they claim — homosexuals in the population. Rush, honey, when did 30 percent get to be a small number?
LIMBAUGH: I don’t — I think it’s actually larger than 30 percent. But let me see if I can get your question right. You want to know why the Republicans are willing to say, “Screw you,” to 30 percent or more of their voters and yet Democrats will bend over, grab the ankles, and say, “Have your way with me,” for 10 percent and 2 percent of the population?
CALLER: Delicately, yes.
Limbaugh said “these kooks — and I’m not talking about just the blacks — I’m talking about a whole kook-fringe base” have influence because they have money. But, he added, “in addition to the money aspect of this,” there is the “anti-war kook fringe. And it is huge. From MoveOn.org to Think Progress to My Base Book — whatever these things, these things — well, maybe not MySpace or Face, whatever it is.”
Limbaugh complained that these “kooks” have too much influence on the left. All this coming from the far right’s preeminent smear artist, a man who is — as John McCain says — “a voice that is respected by a lot of people who are in our [Republican] party.”

Whenever Rush blows his stink around and starts to get to me, I think back on the day he subbed for Pat Sajak, back when Pat was on late nite. Rush subbed for Pat one night thinking it would be a great opportunity for him to break into the mainstream. In other words, expand his audience beyond “ditto heads.” Some of the mainstream audience began to heckle him for all the outrageous bullshit he had said on his radio show. I tell ya gang, they were out for blood. The network [CBS I think] went to 1 . . then 2 commercial breaks, because things were getting pretty nasty. Now get this, after the second commercial they went back to Rush and the gang, only there was no gang [audience]. Things had gotten so out of hand that CBS completely cleared the audience out of the studio. Rush was playing to an empty house and was desperately trying to salvage the spectacle by trying to look fair and open-minded. He lamented that the audience didn’t get to know him. Damn, it was beautiful! On that night poor old Rush learned that there’s a lot of people that can’t stand him. He’s been surrounded by “ditto-headed” toadies ever since. Go to Youtube and type “A Bully Gets Bullied.”

It’s true that African-Americans tend to vote for Democrats more than Republicans, and gay Americans probably also vote for the Dems in larger numbers (Log Cabin Reps notwithstanding). But what has the Democratic Party really done for these groups lately? The best they can say is that they aren’t actively screwing them over, as the GOP does, which is why they can still count on their votes.
The Republican Party, on the other hand, has danced to the tune of the evangelicals to the point where it has affected Supreme Court decisions. How can Limbaugh even suggest that the GOP has abandoned the Christian right with a straight face?
I suspect that part of the perception is that abortion, prayer in schools, gay marriage, affirmative action, and other issues critical to these groups haven’t really made it to the list this election cycle — they’ve been pushed aside by the economy, our various wars, the health care crisis, and even global warming. But I look for some of these to be used as wedge issues by the right between now and November.
The only real “bending over and taking” that I’m seeing is from BOTH parties when it comes to Israel. But that’s another thread.
